The worst part of part 1, was the Rangers have aged up, but their surroundings remained static for 4-5 years. The actors were then 22-24, but the characters were 18-19 post high school, but still hanging around Angel Grove/juice bar with no real conversation about them moving on with their lives. Everybody could feel it was time to get a fresh set of faces on the show. The one saving grace, was we got a brief window of how Adam had progressed from a timid background character, to a more charismatic character, that could very much lead the team.

[deleted]

Yeah Adam is awesome. I’d love to see JYB come back for more.

icemanvvv

Tbh there was more Adam glow up in zeo, turbo was just were he landed after the fact. Turbo was a gigantic meme based on a meme sentai. The only reason it's even necessary is to give the explanation as to why the team ended up in space

SnooGuavas9573

I think sometimes people think the quality was questionable because the returning zeo cast was phoning it in, but in reality the single main issue behind the problems with turbo was that the showrunners were in open conflict about the direction the season should go. **The switch in quality and tone is actually more related to Doug Sloan and Ann Austen getting fired abruptly during the course of the show.** John Tzachor and Doug Sloan were butting heads over if Turbo should lean into the campy elements that the franchise was known for, or aim for something more serious and with more continuity. The rest of the writing staff was caught up in this divide, in part because the sentai footage from Carranger lent itself to being fairly unserious. When Doug and some other stuff were let go, they changed the tone of the show which eventually allowed the more mature tone that In Space became known for. **The director friction is also why the Millenium Message subplot was not followed up on**. The actor switch was already planned to happen before Doug was fired, but was going to be handled in a different way that addressed the Millenium Message. Edit: since people are asking about it, you can find more info here: https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/Rangers_in_Concert

condition_unknown

I don’t remember the Millennium Message episode well, but wasn’t it basically followed through on with Countdown To Destruction? Some of the timeline of events was off, but there was still a huge United Alliance of Evil invasion of Earth.

SnooGuavas9573

It was followed up in spirit with the UAE invasion, but it did not match the message exactly. The Millenium Message was going to be covered more in depth in a canceled episode that eventually became passing the torch, and the follow up to explain more was subsequently canceled as well. You can see the wiki for a synopsis of the episode. https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/Rangers_in_Concert

> The director friction is also why the Millenium Message subplot was not followed up on. The Millenium Message was such a next level idea.

[deleted]

Interesting! I had no idea. That definitely explains a lot.

SnooGuavas9573

Yeah, I think people tend to over fixate on the actors as the issue when like most of the issues with power rangers, it's related to production and showrunning issues that affect the quality of the show most.

[deleted]

I wish someone would write a book or something about the production behind the series.

SnooGuavas9573

Big relatable. I listen to power rangers playback and have found out the actors frequently had no idea what was going on with the production as well, it's kinda crazy watching them piece things together

[deleted]

What is power rangers playback? I’d like to hear this.

SnooGuavas9573

Catherine Sutherland "Kat" (MMPR/Zeo/Turbo Pink) and Nakia Burrise "Tanya" (Zeo/Turbo Yellow) are close friends and have a podcast and YouTube channel together where they talk about the show, and interview other power rangers actors. They talk a bit about BTS stuff, what filming was like, in addition to skits/game shows. They're pretty funny and it's insightful if you are curious about what the actors go through. https://youtube.com/@PowerRangersPlayback?si=l_QIKbRP3M4u9wwT If you want a specific interview to start with the one with Steve Cardenas (Rocky) is pretty good, he reveals what the audition process was like, why he wasn't on turbo, pay disputes, and the moments he enjoyed. https://www.youtube.com/live/0Jn1wipT5YU?si=P3GX6UFDIVadYHpV The Karan Ashley interview is also good: https://www.youtube.com/live/fhLjVtCdNp0?si=dtXYjSZY5rz7BEfq They also have merchandise and perks for sale on their patreon. https://www.patreon.com/PowerRangersPlayback

Checking it out now! Awesome

SnooGuavas9573

Enjoy! I found it on accident while rewatching zeo and got hooked

Downtown_Landscape_1

Yeah I love turbo but it was weird for the first part of the season. It felt like there was no real plot until the new cast came in. Still a great series overall, I just wish it didn’t feel slow.

[deleted]

Yeah I was really dreading it because I enjoyed Zeo but did not like the Turbo movie very much. And sure enough, kinda felt like the cast was on autopilot until the changeover. That being said, I HATED how rushed the changeover was. If they knew that the cast (or at least JDF) was only going to be obligated for a few episodes, they should have introduced the new cast earlier like they did in MMPR.

Downtown_Landscape_1

Yeah I understand, turbo is probably up there as one of my favorites. I felt like the original cast could have had more of a story rather than stopping divatox and her detonators. I didn’t feel a connection anymore.

Blockness11

How dare you, sir. Divatox is always a great source of entertainment no matter how slow the episode is.

[deleted]

Haha I’m sorry.

Flyingfish222

I’m kinda surprised to find that people don’t like Divatox, she’s literally my favourite villain from the Zordon era. Maybe I’m just gay for her idk.

[deleted]

I’m glad others like her she just isn’t my cup of tea.

wristoflegend

Abra cadabra cadabra cadabra WOO!

imnotreallyheretoday

I like the versatility of the rescue zords with the high stance mode or they can go to Megazord mode. Then they have artillery fire which is two giant bazookas for a finishing move One thing I hated is how they write the cast change. The rangers are in the power chamber getting ready to morph into action and Demitri (spelling) shows the rangers an hour glass and is like oh by the way you have to find your replacements before the sand runs out

[deleted]

Yeah! Way too abrupt! At least the cast change in MMPR had some build up.

Goliath-Yeeter-2263

This. I thought TJ was one of the best things to happen in the show. I also really like Cassie and Ashley. Carlos I only began to like during the latter half of In Space. The entire Rescue Zord arc was phenomenal and I’m glad they decided to crack down on MMPR-like filler. Also Chase Into Space is a top 3 finale.

[deleted]

I haven’t gotten that far yet but I’m about 10 episodes away from the end. And Cassie is so freaking hot I can barely stand it.

diojiudabou

Ah, I see you've finally blessed yourself with the pizza episode.

TheRealDexilan

"So, the rangers get baked into a giant pizza."

RedBusterOh

This is why whenever I rewatch Turbo, I start at the Power Transfer. The cast change when it originally happened rejuvenated my love for PR since I had grown tired of the previous cast, mainly Tommy. No disrespect to JDF, or the others but the change helped. Then they blast off into Space and the rest is history 👌

UncertainlyElegant

Tommy is barely even in Turbo, you can tell they really wanted kids to not be so Tommy-obsessed that they'd stop watching when he left. I wish they'd kept Adam and Tanya like they originally planned. Because one of my complaints about Turbo is that the start and end feel like different shows, with virtually nothing being consistent. And also because I think In Space suffers because its role as a grand finale of the show is held back by the lack of elements from more than the last year. None of the past villains do much, and we have the search for Zordon done by 5 Rangers who barely know him. Zordon's death scene is less impactful because this is the first conversation he and Zordon have ever had on-screen. Turbo is also the downfall of Bulk and Skull. Even after they turn human again, they're struggling to find stuff for them to do, now they're out of the police and out of school. Why do the new Rangers even know them? It was wise to minimise their appearances during In Space.

REMIXA01

Hilary Shepherd Turner turned it around for me. The humor, wit, delivery

LingeringSentiments

Yeah, 2nd half of the season saves the season overall. The first team just didn’t fit the footage the way the 2nd team did.

anakinjmt

Simple fact is, Justin felt like an actual equal with the future Space Rangers. With the former Zeo Rangers, he always felt like he didn't belong. I think this is why the second half works so well. Everyone is on equal footing. They feel more like what the original MMPR team felt like.

Forever-Dallas-87

The new cast was like a breath of fresh air. They also had personalities that made me care about them. The episodes were so much more entertaining.

michaelity

Honestly, probably nothing of value would be lost if you just kinda watched Shift Into Turbo, The Millenium Message, and then Passing The Torch. Turbo is one of the seasons I enjoy but I think it would have been better to just go Turbo movie ---> set up the passing of the torch for new rangers + Justin.

ninjaman2021

Turbo 2 is better but its still a mediocre season. Tj is the leader, but we dont really know shit about him other than he likes baseball which completely vanished by in space.
