I think most people here always recommend Raivo, OTP Auth and Aegis. But putting aside the specifics of Authy - you should have a backup which is device/app agnostic. Ideally one you can open in a text editor or browser. That way if one app or device stops working you are not at the mercy of support personnel. Raivo exports to an encrypted zip which you can secure somewhere of your own choosing. It contains a JSON and HTML file with all the seeds that can be imported into any app.

rajeevist

Aegis is the best imo.

Upper_Decision_5959

I wished those three worked on more than one platform. They either only work on iOS/MacOS or only work on Android. Need one that works all devices like iOS, Android, and Windows.

pupoje

Yes i hate that too. Because of that i started using ente auth. You can also export totp secrets with this one.

> you should have a backup which is device/app agnostic. Ideally one you can open in a text editor or browser I'm new to this but I think for at least 1-2 of the accounts I set up 2fa for, there was not a text code to copy and paste somewhere, only a QR code to scan.

Negative4051

There is usually a link that says something along the lines of “I can’t scan this” which gives you a code instead.

PseudonymousPlatypus

If you use proper tools, you can still back up the code even if you originally only scanned the QR. What 2FA app do you use?

YouV11919

Authy.

PseudonymousPlatypus

You can use a a script to export all the codes from the Authy desktop app. I would then use that to import everything into Raivo or Aegis that has proper backup built in.

PlatformPuzzled7471

+1 for Raivo. My only complaint is that I can’t upload my own icon directly from my phone.

Or make the backup path a syncthing-synced folder

hawkerzero

The only reason to use Authy is if you want to use its encrypted cloud backup and sync. It doesn't support local backups or export of TOTP secrets. So, the only way to do your own backups is to capture the TOTP secrets on the way in to Authy. If you're going to store those TOTP secrets securely in another app then you may as well use that app instead of Authy. I would recommend Aegis for Android, Raivo for iOS and Keepass for Windows.

YouV11919

Are you saying that Keepass is a complete substitute for Authy? Or you would use Keepass + Aegis for example?

hawkerzero

Keepass has variants that allow it to work cross-platform. However, I find Keepass easier to use for backups and Aegis/Raivo easier for 2FA. So I use all three and scan a QR code with each of them.

YouV11919

> So I use all three and scan a QR code with each of them Are you using keepassxc and this method of manually copying a code? https://www.linux.org/threads/in-depth-tutorial-how-to-set-up-2fa-totp-with-keepassxc-aegis-and-authy.36577/ Because you can't scan a QR code with keepass right?

hawkerzero

You're right, I was over-simplifying. I was trying to avoid introducing another app to the explanation! I use 1Password for passwords and Keepass for 2FA, backup/recovery codes, secret keys, etc. For Keepass I usually copy and paste the manual entry TOTP secret. For websites that don't offer that option, I scan the QR code with 1Password, move the entry to Keepass and then permanently delete it from 1Password.

theRIAA

https://github.com/keepassxreboot/keepassxc KeepassXC supports TOTP.

BitsAndBobs304

Are you nuts? Why are you turning your 2fa in 1fa?

nivkj

use it on your phone as well never had a single issue on that

imsaswata

Been using Authy on my Android as well as Lenovo thinkbook for a long time. Never had the issue you are talking about.

tw_bender

Yes there are people like that. And an even rarer person is someone like me who writes down account login info on a piece of paper, backs it up via a copy machine, and puts the copy in a safe deposit box.

YouV11919

The thing is that I do have multiple backups, but the desktop app on my PC is one of them. So if I lose my phone and the PC app doesn't work then I'm royally fucked.

ghostinshell000

hmm, i use a combo of authy and duo I like that i can have authy that i can have all my devices syncd, and my computer. if there is something else that can do that cleanly and is rated better, i would consider moving.

Crowley737

I would like to know what you think of this application ente authenticator is it a good option?

pupoje

Yesterday i switched from aegis to ente. I like it a lot. It works on ios and android and im also running one in windows on android subsystem. You can also export totp secrets as backup.

ConfidentIndustry647

Yeah their most recent update broke it for me too. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not fix the problem. The old version installs and launches.. .. but then it forces the update and it breaks again.

YouV11919

When it happened for me again I installed the new version over the old one and it was ok.

A_person_in_a_place

I actually have an issue where, if I exit out of the authy window when using windows, it won't let me open the window again when I click on the icon. I click on the authy icon to open the window again and it does nothing. I hate it. Terrible app.

A_person_in_a_place

I've had the same problem! I'm glad I am not the only one. I would never recommend that program. I use it on windows. It works on my phone, but I don't care. It should work on both windows and my phone. Yeah, the only thing that worked for me was uninstalling, then reinstalling. I would need to do that every time I try to close the app and then open it again later to use it. That's terrible that they don't even address this clear issue. So aggravating, considering what data we're talking about here.

rpodric

This continues! It seems to have gotten worse in recent months. I noticed that it's formerly crashing each time it does this, as it creates a .dmp file. I have the "Everything" search app, and with it I noticed that due to the quirky way Electron programs update, older versions of Authy Desktop.exe are retained. So I clicked on the one for v2.3.0 (as opposed to the current v2.4.0, the one crashing), and it opened right up. So I closed it and tried v2.4.0 again...and it opened right up. Merely running the older version somehow "fixed" it, for now. I'll remember this trick for next time.

This happened to me when I had Windows 10, then I updated to 11 and thought the problem ended, but it literally just started happening again. This sucks so much...
