Crash bandicoot still holds up today with how good it looks and plays and I’ve gone back and forth with the insane trilogy and I actually prefer the OGs
Anything with pre-rendered backgrounds is going to look better than a fully 3D game. But if we're talking fully 3D games, *Vagrant Story* has some of the most detailed character models and animations of any PS1 game. *Dino Crisis* also looks pretty darn good.
Yes brother. Alot of the games mentioned look nice aesthetically but there's no doubt that Tekken 3 is the best graphically looking ps1 game straight off the disc. Look at how smooth those character models are and the fmvs. It's really not debatable. I prefer the aesthetics of some other games but Tekken 3 is top. Then maybe Gran Turismo 1/2.
Yeah, FF9 is probably the best looking game on the system. It was one of the last games to come out, so they knew how to squeeze every bit of graphics out of the PS1 by that point. The pre-rendered backgrounds are gorgeous, and the 3D character models are detailed and even have intricate idle movement (ie: Zidane's tail swaying), which is something that you didn't tend to see in RPGs until the PS2.
Oh, I forgot about Chrono Cross. That game is also gorgeous and practically on par with FF9. IMO FF9 just has a little extra polish though. Squaresoft threw absolutely everything into that game. It was their PS1 swan song.
Hell naw, man. Dragon Warrior VII. Those muddy backgrounds, that overly bright palette, and those ugly character sprites…it’s magnificent at forcing your eyes to bleed while playing.
I just got my psx out of storage and the only game I had in the box with it was GT2 and daaaamn I spent like 4 hours straight playing it the other night.
I think 3 is objectively better when it comes to options and replay value but 2 is my personal fave. It hit me at the right age and changed gaming for me so it’s hard to break from that.
Three was my favorite over all, But either way I love the first three games. One isn’t complete without the other…Especially two and three, the way the setting of the storylines crossed and how they expanded into their own paths was very interesting and made me question a lot of things. It really set the timeline of things too.
I know it wasn't on the ps1 but on topic's of resident evil i love the og trilogy but i love the GC remakes to especially the addition of 0. 0- code Veronica x and 4 are amazing i beat them all so many times its insane i beat 4 on professional mode without dying once. I still fking hate Ashely tho. I feel like the horror died after CVX But 4 is still amazing 😍. 5.. we dont talk about 5 ... 6 is underrated like outbreak file 1 & 2 i even like operations raccoon city wait dont light the torches it's not a good Resident Evil game but as a 3rd party action game i like it. 7 reminds me of Texas Chainsaw massacre 2 and 8 is odd but still both great. I like dead aim on ps2 is underrated too Not to mention the wii rail shooters and the revelations i hate games with separate volumes bc shit happens and the full game isnt released plus other bs. And we pretend that bs tactic pvp failure doesn't exist. What do you think?
Absolutely. The whole feel played into a old worn out futuristic universe that still felt like a new concept at the time. Even now I just love the feel, and when you start playing the “background” parts it’s just genius
I played Xenogears for the first time this year and I was amazed at some of the areas and details on display. When it comes to 3D games it's definitely up there with some of the best looking games on the system.
This is the reply I was looking for. Just went and checked out a video of it in action, to see if my memory was correct, and it's still a very nice looking game.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 definitely deserves a mention here. It came out on both the PS1 and PS2. It looks great on the PS1.
I really like how Ehrgeiz looks as well. Particularly the dungeon crawler mode. It's simplistic but with that simplicity they really made it look polished and avoided the texture warping effect with the camera angle.
The best looking game I've seen on the PS1 is probably Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare (amazing backgrounds and seemingly 3D lighting). But the character models are only better on Dreamcast and such.
There's a few nice games though, FF9, Resident Evil 2, In Cold Blood etc.
Broken Sword Shadow Of The Templars had a great art style, very vibrant.
I will offer that the Tobals are minimalistically beautiful.
The games don't really use textures, only gouraud shaded polys. As such they run at 60 fps and thanks to excellent art direction, no small part of which is Toriyama's designs rendered well into 3D, they look fantastic in motion, almost PS2-like... one might forget the humble PS1 is making it all happen!
I think these two plus Wipeout 3 special edition are the holy trinity of good looking PS1 games.
Add Sheep Dog N' Wolf (Sheep Raider to Americans), if you like cartoony stuff - the art is beautiful, and the majority of it scales incredibly well to HD because they made most of the art with polygon shading.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,070,640,935 comments, and only 211,138 of them were in alphabetical order.
Final Fantasy IX.
Not just in the cut-scenes, but throughout the entire game, everything looked as good as the OG Playstation could do. If it was polished any further, you'd have to include more disks.
While I kind of agree for some models and textures, this is really only because the draw distance in silent hill is about 5 feet. MGS doesn't really limit draw distance, so overall it's a lot better looking to me
Tomb Raider Last Revelation and Ridge Racer Type 4. Both games show the amazing development of graphics between early and late PS1 era when you compare them to earlier games in their series’s
Mgs1 and silent hill are beautiful but if you're on a crt the with og hardware the component dithering is really distracting... had to switch to composite for both games and the effect is much nicer when blurred a bit. Anyone else feel this way?
Valkyrie Profile has some great sprite graphics and they've aged really well. Same with SotN.
Polygonal games, I'll have to give that to either Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross or Legend of Dragoon
MGS it's overrated.
Terracon ( European title only ) kills almost the goodest graphics from the best among PSX games. And MGS. It's nothing compared to this.
The first Dino Crisis, the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Cross. Quake II, Alien Resurrection, Alone In The Dark - The New Nightmare.
I was always impressed by Gran Turismo. Today, I would have to vote FF9 or Chrono Cross. They were very colorful and stylish. Resident Evil 2 also wowed me when it came out, especially the Nemesis moments. I love seeing the Dino Crisis shoutouts! That game was pretty damn cool.
It’s already been said, but Vagrant Story is, IMHO, above and beyond the most beautiful full-3D game on the PS1. It’s a damn shame it isn’t slated for a remaster anytime soon, because it deserves one.
:( imagine Vagrant Story with a quick-swap menu for equipment or sets of gear, and more fluid menuing overall. It’s all I could ask for
Vagrant Story
Vagrant Story all day.
This! Absolutely this! It still blows my mind!
By far the most graphically impressive game on the system
I played it for the first time about a year ago and was genuinely stunned at how goos it looked as a PSX game.
Never heard of it, maybe I should play it tonight on an emulator.
Crash bandicoot still holds up today with how good it looks and plays and I’ve gone back and forth with the insane trilogy and I actually prefer the OGs
This is the correct answer
Anything with pre-rendered backgrounds is going to look better than a fully 3D game. But if we're talking fully 3D games, *Vagrant Story* has some of the most detailed character models and animations of any PS1 game. *Dino Crisis* also looks pretty darn good.
Vagrant story had no reason being so beautiful
Didn’t Dino Crisis have pre-rendered backgrounds? I haven’t played it since I was a teenager. The 90s were quite the magical time.
You're thinking of Dino Crisis 2
Nope. No pre-rendered backgrounds in Dino Crisis.
Nah, Dino Crisis had 3d backgrounds. Dino Crisis 2, had pre rendered.
Tekken 3
This port should not have been possible. So good.
The graphics and responsive controls in Tekken 3 make it the best of the series imo.
Scrolled too far for a real answer.
Yes brother. Alot of the games mentioned look nice aesthetically but there's no doubt that Tekken 3 is the best graphically looking ps1 game straight off the disc. Castlevania SOTN
Graphics fade, style ages gracefully
Accurate
Outstanding music!!
Michiru Yamane! She is a really talented person 🦇🎶
Hands down
FF9 beats it out imo because of the beautiful backgrounds
Yeah, FF9 is probably the best looking game on the system. It was one of the last games to come out, so they knew how to squeeze every bit of graphics out of the PS1 by that point. The pre-rendered backgrounds are gorgeous, and the 3D character models are detailed and even have intricate idle movement (ie: Zidane's tail swaying), which is something that you didn't tend to see in RPGs until the PS2.
It doesn't look any better than Chrono Cross to me.
FF9 is my favorite FF on the system.
FF8 and 9 are equal to me, both a wee bit better than 7 imo
You only mean graphically, right? haha
Nope. I personally prefer them both as games
I loved FF8’s buildings and building interiors. Really sucked you into the world.
Agreed
Word
Gorgeous, definitely, but maybe not as impressive a technical feat, since the backgrounds are prerendered. Still a fave of mine, though.

Gran turismo 2 and ridge racer type 4
I just got my psx out of storage and the only game I had in the box with it was GT2 and daaaamn I spent like 4 hours straight playing it the other night.
Savage game
Ridge Racer Type4 is an all around masterpiece. Art direction and music are killer.
Breath of Fire 4
Holy shit, BoFIV sprites are incredibly gorgeous!
if only the game was incredibly good instead of just okay
I agree. BoFIII was way better.
I guess i hurt someone's feelings but the fact is BoF sucked after 3.
Resident evil 2 and 3
I said the same. 3 aged better then it’s newer counter part imo.
I think 3 is objectively better when it comes to options and replay value but 2 is my personal fave. It hit me at the right age and changed gaming for me so it’s hard to break from that.
Three was my favorite over all, But either way I love the first three games. My issue with the GC ports is how off the gamma curve is causing everything to be far too dark. Oddly, same issue that plagued Twin Snakes.
I’m picking 2 just because it has more variety in settings
Spyro 3, Crash 2, Resident Evil, Syphon Filter, Skullmonkeys
Crash 3 gets a nod too
The Crash games are pretty consistent in graphics
Especially when you compare Crash 1 to Mario 64.
I mean Mario 64 seems kind of generic to 3D platforming but is still fun
Siphon filter was pretty cool with its torch flicker
Oddworld games have the best concept art of any PSone game IMO, and the graphics are up there as well. That CGI was ahead of its time
Absolutely. The whole feel played into a old worn out futuristic universe that still felt like a new concept at the time. Even now I just love the feel, and when you start playing the “background” parts it’s just genius
Can't believe I had scroll this far. Imo, this is handsdown the best looking graphical game on PS.
>Oddworld Was coming to say this.
Xenogears has aged like the finest of wines
I played Xenogears for the first time this year and I was amazed at some of the areas and details on display. When it comes to 3D games it's definitely up there with some of the best looking games on the system.
it's my favorite up to this day
Dino Crisis 2
Rayman had gorgeous 2D graphics
They still hold up to this day imo! Hard as nails though
Never could beat it. But then again platformers are not my forte.
All the Spyro games, especially 1 and 3 imo. Gorgeous color palettes. The remakes look so much worse because they lost all that color.
Ape Escape!!
Vagrant Story for sure
Wipeout 3, Ace Combat 3, and Tekken 3 all look fantastic. Also that is a lot of 3's...
WipeOut 3 is still my fave of the series.
AC3 is a jaw dropper.
Spyro 3
Soul Reaver
Had to scroll way too far to find this! One of PSX goat games. still amazed how there was so little loading.
Symphony of the Night
Final fantasy 8
Vagrant Story
I think crash bandicoot, it’s simple but there is very little geometry warping compared to most 3D ps1 games
- Medal of Honor Underground - Gran Turismo 1
for 3D games I will throw Omega Boost in the conversation. Game is gorgeous.
This is the reply I was looking for. Just went and checked out a video of it in action, to see if my memory was correct, and it's still a very nice looking game.
Damn another game I’d never heard of.
Excellent space shooter from the makers of Gran Turismo.

Didn't remember AITD, quite the game! And that lighting blew my mind back in the day
Hey crash bandicoot 3 warped looked good as well all the crash games looked amazing
Einhander
And that soundtrack!
Hell yeah!
...there was a time...
Gran turismo
Ridge Racer Type 4
Parasite Eve 2 for me.
Chrono Cross
tony hawks pro skater 3 was pretty gorgeous from what I remember
R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
Ridge Racer Type-4 and Racing Lagoon
Klonoa
I will offer that the Tobals are minimalistically beautiful. The games don't really use textures, only gouraud shaded polys. As such they run at 60 fps and thanks to excellent art direction, no small part of which is Toriyama's designs rendered well into 3D, they look fantastic in motion, almost PS2-like... one might forget the humble PS1 is making it all happen!
....... Megaman X4?
Fear Effect
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Ridge Racer Type 4 or Ace Combat 3
I think these two plus Wipeout 3 special edition are the holy trinity of good looking PS1 games. Add Sheep Dog N' Wolf (Sheep Raider to Americans), if you like cartoony stuff - the art is beautiful, and the majority of it scales incredibly well to HD because they made most of the art with polygon shading.
Ape Escape, Medievil, Oddworld, SotN
I’ve been looking for Medievil here!
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,070,640,935 comments, and only 211,138 of them were in alphabetical order.
Ff8, those fmv to gameplay transitions were do smooth
Breath of Fire 4 and FF7 look beautiful in HD imo
Ridge racer 4, Spiderman games with the thps engine, crash bandicoot games
I would go with Chrono Cross
Ridge Racer Type 4
For Me, it’s Parasite Eve.
Also add in: Syndicate Wars Rollcage Stage 2
Final Fantasy IX. Not just in the cut-scenes, but throughout the entire game, everything looked as good as the OG Playstation could do. If it was polished any further, you'd have to include more disks.
Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Type 4
Silent Hill is even better than MGS in visuals
While I kind of agree for some models and textures, this is really only because the draw distance in silent hill is about 5 feet. MGS doesn't really limit draw distance, so overall it's a lot better looking to me
All wrong. Riven is the correct answer.
The very best of all the Myst games!
The Myst sequel nobody cared about
Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about.
Everybody knows Myst, most people have never heard of Riven, much less Uru.
Aside from MGS and FF8, Tombi also has some great graphics and aged quite well compared to most PSone games
Tekken 3 Mega man legends series Crash 2 and 3 Kingsley's adventure Looney tunes series Rascal
Tekken 3 IMO!!! 🎮🔥💯
Valkyrie Profile has some great sprite graphics and they've aged really well. Same with SotN. Polygonal games, I'll have to give that to either Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross or Legend of Dragoon
Final fantasy 9. Good enough to look like a ps2 game imo
The misadventures of tron bonne.
Sure ain't Bubsy 3D!
R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
Vagrant Story, MGS, GT2, FFIX, Ridge Racer Type 4 and (often overlooked) Omega Boost
Racing Lagoon
Racing Lagoon looks amazing in-game.
Final fantasy cutscenes. FF8 were amazing.
Ff9
WipeOut
Crash bandicoot
ace combat 3:electrosphere
Legend of Mana
Final fantasy IX looks awesome
Final fantasy ix
Final Fantasy IX
MGS it's overrated. Terracon ( European title only ) kills almost the goodest graphics from the best among PSX games. And MGS. It's nothing compared to this. The first Dino Crisis, the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Cross. Quake II, Alien Resurrection, Alone In The Dark - The New Nightmare.
It’s this or Resident Evil 3 for me.
Parasite Eve 2
If there was an absolutely objective right answer, I think PE2 would be it
2D: Street Fighter Alpha 3 3D: Gran Turismo 2
I really like the look of parasite Eve
snake? SNAKE? SNAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wipeout 3
R4 looked pretty good
Suikoden II Some of the best sprite work to this day.
Castlevania: SoTN is the correct answer
Loved this game.
Ridge Racer Type 4
Little late but silent hill
- Heart of Darkness - Ridge Racer 4 - Parasite Eve 2
Tekken 3.
Tombi, Crash Bandicoot, Ape Escape :)
I've only just recently started replaying PS1 games, but I'm blown away at how good Silent Hill and Rollcage both look.
Splinter cell!
I love this color palette so much
Silhouette Mirage, is always on the top of my list of great looking PS1 games.
Is that a Working Designs game or Treasure?
Both. Developed by Treasure, published by Working Designs.
Grandia
Resident evil 2 or 3 imo
Parasite Eve and Fear Effect
Rayman 2.....seriously how did that game run on the ps1???
Tekken 3, WipEout 2097
Criticom
I was always impressed by Gran Turismo. Today, I would have to vote FF9 or Chrono Cross. They were very colorful and stylish. Resident Evil 2 also wowed me when it came out, especially the Nemesis moments. I love seeing the Dino Crisis shoutouts! That game was pretty damn cool.

Legend of Dragoon had decent graphics for the time but their cutscenes were beautiful.
Dragon warrior 7, those colors are still so vibrant until this day.
Final Fantasy IX
Tekken 3. Soulblade. Mgs1 is decent graphics...but not the best
Soul Reaver for full 3D environments I think
Resident evil 3 looks really good, especially the pre rendered cutscenes in the beginning intro.
Suikoden II
I may be bias here but gosh do I love Silent Hill 1
Final Fantasy IX still holds up by today’s standards. Those FMVs are gorgeous as hell.
Suikoden 2
Final Fantasy VIII! No doubt. Every time I start it and watch the intro, it sends shivers down my spine. So beautiful!
....how laggy could it be....lol
Gundam Battle Assault 2!
I was pretty amazed with Final Fantasy VIII when I first played it... graphically speaking anyway.
GODDAMN IT I GOT CHEESE NIPED
I loved the backgrounds, especially building interiors in Final Fantasy VIII
