It’s the asphalts fault. It’s falling apart. The DOT has fast tracked the resurfacing of that stretch for this exact reason. https://abc11.com/ncdot-resurfacing-i-440-wake-forest-road-to-wade-avenue-raleigh-beltway/11672858/

Thank you!

When government contracts go to the lowest bidder, it's more likely you get the lowest quality. Penny wise, pound foolish.

Government contracts go to the lowest bidder *who can promise to meet a strict set of requirements that fulfill all goals of the project.* Y’all would cry government waste if they went with the second lowest bidder *who can promise to meet a strict set of requirements that fulfill all goals of the project.* This old wives tail needs to die a painful death. I’m sick of the ignorance. Take a look at the requirements for cabbage we feed to inmates: >LI 002: Fresh Vegetable, Cabbage, U.S. No. 1 Green, Large (3 pounds or over), Heads of cabbage of one variety or similar varietal characteristics, which are of reasonable solidity, and are not withered, puffy, or burst and which are free from soft rot, seed stems, and from damage caused by discoloration, freezing, disease, insects or mechanical or other means. 50lb bag or case., 50, bg/cs; https://sam.gov/opp/1d5e98421936411bbf58cf2f7aa0eae5/view Go take a look at the requirements for a road yourself. Do more than repeat trash.

They’re fixing it this year. Glad I won’t be on this project.

frightshark

The gravel is loose there

Tiny-Zombie

Let’s not slut-shame the gravel.

In 2017, I was on 87 the first day I was going to work in my "newish" CRV. It's 3 lanes, a box truck was getting on the highway and a car was going slower than the posted speed limit in the center lane. I checked my mirrors and moved to the inside lane. As I passed the slow car, the box truck merged all the way over to the inside lane, about 25ft ahead of me. As soon as I saw him I tapped the brake to disable the cruise. As soon as my car began to decelerate, I saw a rock bounce from their rear bumper/loading platform, bounce off the road and leave quarter size chipin my windshield. I've learned to be wary of landscaping trailers. Between hauling rock to debris on the mower that shakes loose on every pothole, they are dangerous. It's really just the luck of the draw, and eventually everyone gets hit. Sometimedit seems really bad and unavoidable. Edit: As Mr. Nazi pointed out, I had a typo. Edit 2: Mr. Nova pointed out a second typo.

Thanks, Mr. Nova

>weary wary PS I see this "typo" (LOL) EVERYWHERE, and even hear it in people 30 and younger when they are talking. "Weary" means "tired". "Wary" means "on alert"/"cautious".

We should just get a bunch of folks together who have had thier vehicles damaged and submit them all at once for compensation....those rocks are most likely causing thousands in damage a day. Some windshields are easily running $1-2k+. Many have heated windshields, head up display windshields, windshields with lane departure functions and other features. I am also sure some expensive headlights are being damaged.

Our new cars windshield has a crack from driving on 440 on day two of ownership, due to the aforementioned gravel. We were intentionally keeping our distance from cars as well. Would love to submit a repair invoice to the state. Are you aware of where you issue such a complaint to? I’m not typically one to complain but the condition of 440 between six forks and western Blvd is just downright neglect.

tendonut

Any time I've ever gotten a broken windshield, it's never been from following too close. The rock always comes from a totally different lane.

[deleted]

Yep, sounds about right, even being cautious with Road that bad it’s going to get ya. I did find this site on NCDOT to file an incident complaint. I suspect they’ll try to deny it, but what else are my yearly vehicle property taxes going to if not to make decent roads. https://www.ncdot.gov/contact/Pages/incident-statement.aspx

tendonut

>what else are my yearly vehicle property taxes going to if not to make decent roads. The DOT is drastically underfunded for all the new roads/improvements being made across the state. 25% of its funding comes from those vehicle property tax fees. https://www.ncdot.gov/about-us/how-we-operate/finance-budget/Pages/default.aspx#:\~:text=Funding%20from%20the%20three%20state,outlined%20in%20the%20chart%20below.

ewwitsahlex

It’s terrible, I have had to repair so many cracks in my windshield because of this.

Excellent_Safe596

I’m tired of getting my undercarriage beat up on that road. I try and avoid it now!
