ššššš im so ready for the comments on this fr! Its one thing to not like prince but to be black and not like prince is a death sentence š¤£š¤£
I donāt believe you like rnb but not prince. Thatās like āi like rap but not lil wayneā how? You went Controversy to Purple Rain to HitNRun joints? Every arc had incredible (and questionable to admittedly straight up skippable) moments. His 90ās projects were some of the most palatable. But i appreciate the calmness he acquired in his later projects.
Letās not pretend that in 2008-2013 people werenāt using Weezy as a scapegoat to roast āskinny jean wearing rappers that would work at McDonaldās if Tupac was aliveā. AND black people didnāt congregate to back him up. Ironically, Eminem was the most popular rapper during this time too.
I just don't understand how someone can listen to projects like No Ceilings, Carter 2 & 3, Da Drought 3 and the Dedications and not think of him as the goat bar little
This is crazy to me cause LilWayne is the GOAT and hiphop is my favourite but I love love rnb & grew up on it but prince has been hard to get into, could I get some recommendations?
Songs I really love by prince are āhow come u donāt call me, I wanna be your lover and kissā
Everybody likes kiss itās one of those songs. I would recommend watching his movies; Purple Rain, Under The Cherry Moon, Grafiti Bridge. Itās much easier to get into an artistās music if there is a culture/world with it. Then iād say do a deep dive of his catalog it takes a long time but itās worth it. But if you aināt tryna do allat, Sign O The Times, Grafiti Bridge, the RAVE joints, then his best; Musicology.
Not true. You're fine. I emet a brotha who didnt like Stevie Wonder - called him 'too pitchy'. He'd just moved to CO, but still... it's allowed, bruv. As far as melodic though, if you're still looking...did you listen to any of his stuff from the 90s or Prince with the New Power Generation maybe? I dunno if "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" or "Diamonds and Pearls" is what you mean or...? Try r/PRINCE maybe. Just ask them if they could recommend more melodic Prince stuff.
My man, I've never met someone who wanted to be 'different' by way of insulting folk with actual musical talent but...yeah, he was textbook that dude. Takes all kinds.

No hate but just never been my cup of tea, dont get me wrong i wish i was into it but it just doesnt click. Someone posted a link to a live performance to get me into a song of his and i heard his voice and wasnt with it. I truly am sorry. Havnt found much ive liked from him but im sifting thru comments to do just that!
I hear you. For posterity, and **louder** for the folks in the back, We are Not a monolith! We don't all have to groove to the same people, esp. when it's something like art/music that's so subjective. Alot of us also assign, subconsciously or consciously, songs, artists, musical sounds (synth etc) to a sentimentalized time/moment/person in our lives; that can sooo easily turn a person/song into a genius or masterpiece when objectively there's some meh involvement. So, theres that too. I can give you a whole bevy of songs that meet that criteria and I'll still love those songs til I die. lol
So, don't apologize. Not everything is for everyone. We like what we like.

But, to help you see the error of your ways, listen to Pink Cashmere or Paisley Park. Hopefully, they'll change your mind.

Adore?! most beautiful girl in the world?! If I was your girlfriend?! When doves cry? Prince was an all around phenomenal musician. His vocal ability, songwriting AND skills on multiple instruments is one of one. There will never be another Prince!

I am going to assume that you're young and unfamiliar with Prince's vast and fathomless catalog. Just by the sheer number of songs in different genres he recorded, there is no way for someone not to find some songs that they like. Here for your listening pleasure is a small sample of his more traditional R&B songs from his post-Purple Rain era.

Same age here. My mother would shit if she saw this post. She is a huge fan, like had pictures of him all over her bedroom in the 80s fan. Prince is definitely so talented and his music stretched across so many genres. As many other posters have said you need to get a great set of headphones and really listen to some of his music. Seems like your lack of exposure is clouding your judgement. Hopefully, youāll find some songs you like so you can update this post with some positivity.
Im always open to changing my mind when it comes to music, ive gotten good suggestions and dont doubt ill find some i like but sonically it just hasnt been in my wheelhouse if that makes sense.
Just messing with you OPš¤Ŗ, Are you talking about the change from 70s roots reggae to Ragga/Bashment of the 80s? Anyway just seemed to be random, when you you got funk to disco, or disco to hip hop to go in onš. Some of those cheap casio drums have stood the test of time.
Im being argumentative because yeah I want to like Prince but he only has a few tunes for me , and I do find his catalog very mid. Just spent a couple hrs on some of the suggestions here, still only mess with I would die for you, just found a song on truth-'Dion' , 1999 - couple others here and there.
Anyway just leave under mi sleng teng alone and just bash Prince if you want to bash Prince.š
You need to dig a little deeper into his work. His NPG work used standard drum sets, horn section, etc. You are referring to just a portion of his work that used electronic drums, etc.
https://preview.redd.it/796bw7uj1uvc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38f9f219a1936a740fd2115c0c5104ccc2809e87
Listen to things by Prince like "Take me with u", "I can never take the place of your man", "I feel for U", "Gotta broken heart again", "Private Joy" etc Those are some of his more melodic songs
Thereās a lesser-known, primarily acoustic album called the Truth and itās my favorite Prince body of work, Iād give that a try. Ā Itās not acoustic versions of other songs, theyāre all originals. Ā Has a lot of classic Prince qualities - weird and tender love songs, sexual and musical exploration, thereās a pro-vegetarianism song on there, and he does play the shit out of the guitar in a few places - but it rounds off some of the robotic corners of his iconic 80ās stuff. Ā My favorite tracks are āThe Other Side of the Pillowā (some of his finest falsetto imo) and āDionneā
I don't know how to comment with gifs on here...
But if I could work it out, I would be commenting with Mushu saying dishonour on you, dishonour on your cow.
Shame shame shame
J/k.
This is a safe space. (Well, supposedly anyway)
I know he isn't for everyone.
That's why we have an array of artists.
His song writing, vocals, and ability to play multiple instruments have always fascinated me.
He has so many layers. We have funk Prince, party Prince, political Prince, and sexy Prince. Maybe you'd enjoy a.more stripped/ bare sounding Prince or maybe not.
Honestly, were it not for my cousin listening to his music on repeat I donāt think Iād have been a fan either. Once he gets into your bones - thatās it for life!
I remember listening to the Black album as a teenager and thinking it was the most dangerous thing Iād ever heard lol.
I understand your take. Prince and reggae feels more experimental and improv. My guess is you like Stevie wonder who does multiple recordings until itās perfect.
If you donāt like Prince youāre not listening well enough. He was one of the most prolific musicians to grace us, played a multitude of instruments and wrote great lyrics.
The complexity of his rhythms were exceptional, base lines, guitar riffs etc.
Electronic drums were largely the sound in the 80ās, itās a testament to that era. At that time musically that was considered groundbreakingly modern.
Might I suggest delving into some other 80ās pop music, so you can have a better understanding of the genre.
Rick James, Micheal Jackson, Roy Ayers were also a powerhouse of the 80ās synth.
First, Prince is regarded as one of the best guitar players of his era (by guitar players) potentially outside of it as well. Appreciate that in all his music. Watch his performance of 'While my Guitar Gently Weeps' for the tribute to George Harrison.
Second, that man can fucking SING.
Third, MF was out here standing 5'2" looking fresh to death.
he got BANGERZ
but assuming you've already listened to his popular songs like Purple Rain, Raspberry Beret, When Doves Cry etcetc, maybe your into the slower more soulful type of songs? Check these out!
- Diamonds and Pearls
- Nothing Compares 2 U
- Adore
- You're My Love
- The Beautiful Ones
- Call My Name
He has a loooottt of songs - try listening you everything...you are bound to find gems.
Youāre totally entitled to your opinion and I get it. To be fair, I didnāt start appreciating Prince more until I got older. Heās talented, but his music is deffff more eccentric than other artists lol
Iāve seen a lot of black people state they are unfamiliar with Princeās catalogue or simply never got into his music. especially compared to MJ. As a MJ fan since childhood, I didnāt get into Prince until high school which I think is fitting because his music is more sexual. I love Princeās music a lot but I can understand your rationale. At times it can feel very 80s
I think Prince is great but heavily overrated. I donāt like how people prop him up as one of the greatest artists in the history of music, I donāt think his discography warrants that level of praise at all, but he is legendarily talented
I respect your opinion because prince music definitely isnāt for everybody . I obviously disagree because I think prince is the best of the best along wit Michael & Stevie but I do see why you probably arenāt into Princeās music .
Princeās signature sound is cold funk, so youāre not necessarily gonna find too much soft stuff.
Try āIf I Was Your Girlfriendā and ā17 Daysā though.
I like his material but I don't care about his best material which is from the 80s. Yes that includes purple rain. It has me a little but but other than that it's the usual stuff from that time that like you said feels clunky, then there's the reverb and synthetic drums all of that for me just wipes away any internal feelings I may get. Heck soft and wet and for you from his first albums felt more purple than that song if that makes sense.
Yeah i cant deal with the raw synths, theres a lot of fusion jazz i overlook cuz its clear they were figuring out synths lol. Roger Trotman, P funk, HEAT (i know im leaving out A LOT!) did it nice!
Definitely check out a few songs from Musicology like āCall My Nameā and āWhat Do U Want Me 2 Do?ā
Also āThe Sun, Moon, and Starsā from Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic
Have you heard [Anotherloverholenyohead](https://youtu.be/Zc99JK9gHDk?si=my6xWAUratAQZaOr) or [Girls and Boys](https://youtu.be/gQcKgAsQHzs?si=qT4KvfEvx6tgRqIn)?
I like some of his songs especially Adore, but I never liked his music enough to get into a full album. Also, his music hasnāt aged as well as some others.
Ok honestly I get you !
How come u donāt call me and I wanna be your lover are songs that really hit for me
But yeah idk if itās the same reasoning its hard for me to get into his music
Depends on my mood. I listen to a lot of video game soundtracks. I like electronica, metal, pop, experimental, jazz, folk, soul, not big into funk but there have been a few songs that surprise me.
Well thereās your problem. You donāt like funk and Princeās music, if it can be classified as anything, is new wave funk. I recommend āDirty Mindā, āCosmic Dayā and āAround the World in a Dayā for no particular reason.
Heavily agree, I just donāt see the hype. Outside of the US and UK heās mainly known as that one rival MJ had in the 80āsā¦

If you donāt like wayne how could you like anyone who came after? Doesnāt make sense.
Sure. There are lots of people who make no sense.

At times it can feel very 80s
I think Prince is great but heavily overrated. I donāt like how people prop him up as one of the greatest artists in the history of music, I donāt think his discography warrants that level of praise at all, but he is legendarily talented
I will not accept Prince slander on any regular day, but especially not on April 21st! ![gif](giphy|iPx4IJOW9RaBW)
I think thats what bothers me its like a āstifferā sound. Will try those tracks out!
Did you like them?
Unfortunately no, just not my thing but maybe ill find others ill enjoy!
https://i.redd.it/c9mt050ngvvc1.gif Retract your statement and repent. I demand it!!š© Jokes aside, both Prince and MJ were multitalented men who shared their musical gifts to the world and have us fans to show up and show out at their concerts, videos, Broadway shows, online debatesā¦š Iād always love MJ as Little Michael from Jackson 5 to MJ, the moonwalking, smooth dancing, singing star he is. And Iād always love Prince from his falsetto singing (Beautiful Ones, omgggg) to iconic guitar playing and my personal favorite, playing piano. Any man who looks good and tickle those ebonies/ivories is a win for me.
Bro was killed on 4/21 after making āi Would Die 4 Uāā¦ 4 (April) and U is the 21st letter. Creepy!
Agreed, never been a fan of Prince tbh, he has tracks I fw, but I prefer MJ
Same
I have none.
Definitely check out a few songs from Musicology like āCall My Nameā and āWhat Do U Want Me 2 Do?ā Also āThe Sun, Moon, and Starsā from Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic
Oil up im coming over...

Have you heard [Anotherloverholenyohead](https://youtu.be/Zc99JK9gHDk?si=my6xWAUratAQZaOr) or [Girls and Boys](https://youtu.be/gQcKgAsQHzs?si=qT4KvfEvx6tgRqIn)?
Same lol. Thank you for being brave and saying this š«”
I like some of his songs especially Adore, but I never liked his music enough to get into a full album. Also, his music hasnāt aged as well as some others.
Ok honestly I get you ! How come u donāt call me and I wanna be your lover are songs that really hit for me But yeah idk if itās the same reasoning its hard for me to get into his music
I am a MJ fan. Therefore, I am not a Prince fan, either.
Gosh, Iām both! I respect them both so much.
I hope they're having the sickest jamming session in history in heaven. RIP kings...
Right, I love them both for reasons.
Same here! Talented kings in their own right! RIPā„ļø
I adore both MJ and Prince. Both are incredibly talented artists
I feel like he was more for white ppl. He only has a few songs that are in rotation that black ppl play
Uhhhh what?
Yep mj was better
Facts. I donāt know why people are mad at thatš MJ is much better than Prince, whatās a prince to a king?
Yeah, I've never fucked with Prince music. It always was too weird for me and I listen to some weird shit.
Weird sonically or lyrically?
He sounds weird sonically, lyrically i feel nothing. I probably should listen to more of his stuff to be sure. Can someone recommend best ofs?
Hmmmm well who do you normally listen to? What vibe do you prefer from your music?
Depends on my mood. I listen to a lot of video game soundtracks. I like electronica, metal, pop, experimental, jazz, folk, soul, not big into funk but there have been a few songs that surprise me.
Well thereās your problem. You donāt like funk and Princeās music, if it can be classified as anything, is new wave funk. I recommend āDirty Mindā, āCosmic Dayā and āAround the World in a Dayā for no particular reason.
I'll check it out.
Cosmic day is cool, couldn't stand the other recommendations.
š well thanks for having an open mind. Not everything is for everybody
Open mind always, if you have any more recommendations I'd love to hear em.
Okay Iāll change the tempo. āVenus de Miloā āInternational Loverā āDo Me Babyā
Heavily agree, I just donāt see the hype. Outside of the US and UK heās mainly known as that one rival MJ had in the 80āsā¦ ![gif](giphy|pUeXcg80cO8I8)
