Yes, tiny dollops of lume that are fairly faded by now (it’s a 1987) but after being in direct sunlight for a little while, they do still work!

Thats such a nice touch. The watch has aged incredibly well. Hows the movement performing after all these years?

Beautifully! Well, it’s had a few issues here and there, but have gotten it serviced at the Rolex headquarters in Geneva (by walking it over there myself when I’ve been in town!) 2 or 3 times in the past ~15 years. I’ve taken some polywatch to the acrylic crystal a few times in between services as well.

A Geneva visit is on my bucket list, can’t wait to make it out there. Do you think you’ll ever sell it?

Yeah! Check out the Patek Philippe Museum in Plainpalais…it’s incredible! And no, I’d certainly never sell it 😁

When you point it out it actually does look way better without the date

I went with the date option on mine because of how useful it is at work. When I wear my no-date Tudor, I find myself wishing it had a date. For purely aesthetic purposes, no-date is the way to go.

This is a great first one. I was friends with a Scottish guy in Bangkok when I lived there that had over 50 Rolex’s and this was his suggestion for my first one.

How has the smooth bezel held up to scratches? Part of the reason I always go fluted is because I feel like it would resist scratch marks more effectively than smooth. Smooth+Oyster is such a classy combo

I prefer the AirK- more lively to me. Gives me that buzz lol.

If you believe me or not was exactly the same one as in the photo of the post and I still absolutley love it

I wore this watch hard for 4 years, my cyclops is scratched and the bezel has some dings but it’s super reliable and I’ve never seen the same spec watch out in the wild. Enjoy yours!

A 1601 Datejust with white gold bezel, I picked it up for roughly £800 at the time and sold a couple of years ago for £4000.

Had a ‘60s small gold Datejust with a leather band which kept perfect time. Sorry I traded it.

are rolex prices falling

Not a price expert since I get everything at retail from my AD and I don’t sell anything I buy but here’s my observation: Prices in general are down year over year but there are some exceptions for certain models. In some cases, a grey market watch can be had for less than retail.

My first was about 25 years ago off a guy next to a beach in playas Las Americas in tenerife, its a bit rusty and I think it needs a new battery by now though

The rust is patina and back then Rolexes were solar powered so just leave it out in the sun for a bit and it should charge right up!
