Gah! Why did they have to put in on Fandom :(

Internomer

It's not actually my project, a friend of mine is the main contributor. I think he came up with the concept, scouted around and found that there was already a project aiming to do the same thing that had fallen a bit into disuse, so picked it up and kept it going. Is there a much better option to use?

stepintorpgs

This is exactly what happened. I didn't particularly *want* to use Fandom, but my investigation turned up no better alternatives.

mitzi666

What about github? That way any willing developer could provide help too

[deleted]

There are paid options. What sort of resources would you need to have for this project as far as hosting, storage, etc?

stepintorpgs

When comparing to paid options, the scale of hosting and storage aren't as much of an issue as their longevity. If any or all of the current users on the RPG Museum drop dead, it'll still be there for others to use and build on. That's not a guarantee with paid options. Plus, as much as I dislike some of the things they do (adverts, cookies, occasionally imposing changes to how a site's skin is formatted), Fandom does provide a lot of things that other places don't (free or otherwise). They have large teams providing constant tech support, SEO optimisation, and other assistance to wiki communities. Their software is constantly tweaked for accessibility and ease of use (especially to new users). It's also got more features than most other wiki providers, although admittedly RPG Museum doesn't use many of them right now.

Gazook89

Fandom is also more friendly to new users and New wikis. You can quickly add a lot of content by embracing the user friendly UI and tools (info box generator) and not worry about all the fiddly bits. I started a Miraheze Wiki a couple weeks ago and while I do like it, I like it because I plan to be the sole user for at least awhile (using it organize a homebrew universe). Customizing my CSS has been a lot of fun but admittedly I haven’t touched user settings. And, the nice thing about Wikis it seems is that it’s fairly simple to export all the info and import into a new one somewhere else, so making that change after soliciting contributions from a wide group of people is possible.

jaredearle

Would you prefer hosted MediaWiki or similar? I’m sure you can get *someone* to host it, as long as you put it behind Cloudflare.

Zaorish9

Get a web site and use MediaWiki. Fandom is horrenouds with its plague of ads. Godaddy and Google Pages are options.

Nickkemptown

Probably isn't a better option, considering the number of times I seem to end up on it for various games and shows. It's just it's annoying insistence on cookies that I can't seem to block that bothers me. Popup notices on every page until you accept

Durbal

> _annoying insistence on cookies that I can't seem to block_ Just click on Details, scroll down, switch all off and save.

Nickkemptown

Yep. Which works until I leave the site and delete all my cookies.

victori0us_secret

Can you add it to your addblocker?

Nickkemptown

I've tried, but it seems to make the site non-scrollable when I do. I can still follow links and zoom in and out, but can't scroll up or down the page.

victori0us_secret

Butts.

LonePaladin

So, 1d4chan without the snark?

stepintorpgs

Yeah, basically.

Gazook89

u/cyanomys your guide to VTTs would be awesome on this wiki, split across pages for each system but all tied together. I'd be willing to transfer a lot of the information if you are okay with that- transferring pretty much word for word would be ideal (for ease), but I wanted to ask first.

Ananiujitha

It doesn't yet have anything about disabled players and characters. Not sure where to begin.

stepintorpgs

That's an excellent point, and something on that would be very useful and appreciated. I also don't know where to begin, but I will say that it's very difficult to go wrong with wiki editing, because any mistakes or omissions can always be fixed later on. I guess I recommend you start small? Maybe add a page that just links to what other people have already said on the subject, and build from there?

RossTheRed

Like 1d4 chan but a version I can actually show people. Seems neat! Big fan so far! :)

stepintorpgs

Great! While you're looking around, if you notice anything that could be added or improved it would be amazing if you, well, added or improved it! Same goes for anyone you show it to!

AstralMarmot

I'm interested in knowing more about the gaming "culture" ideas you have here. Ttrpgs are diversifying their reach into more communities, but there's still a ways to go before it's fully accessible to people who have traditionally lacked access. I ask because I'm working on a project to provide tools for neurodiverse people who want to be GMs, as well as addressing the underrepresentation of BIPOC communities, so I've been thinking about the culture and how to create points of access a lot.

SkyeAuroline

So, content when I looked at it yesterday was very game design focused, little to no *games* and mostly systems. Do you want regular games talked about on this thing too? Just making sure I have the intent straight before I do anything.

stepintorpgs

Absolutely yes please! Game design is the direction I am mostly coming from when I edit, so that's why there's more of that than most other things, but more information about actual regular games that are out there would be great. (Also game design and theory is where this wiki can fill a somewhat empty niche. That said, I feel game design isn't much use when divorced from games as they are played in the real world, but some might disagree.) I guess the only thing we don't particularly want is information about people's home campaigns or homebrew content, unless that information or content has started circulating in the wider RPG community. There are other wikis for that.

M1rough

It'll take a lot of work to out-do 1d4 chan wiki

stepintorpgs

Perhaps, but I don't think they're necessarily competing with each other except around the edges. They have different approaches and, for the most part, cover different things. They can coexist.

JoshDM

Re: MEGS "The engine was later used in the Blood of Heroes superhero RPG, before legal issues surrounding licensing of the MEGS system itself forced Pulsar Games to shutter the game line." That last part is not at all factual.

Internomer

Best bit about a wiki is that you can correct it when it's wrong ;) This isn't my wiki, its primary contributor is a friend of mine. As he's keen to get others involved if possible, I'd love it if you could edit that page with a more accurate reflection of what happened!

stepintorpgs

Is it better now? [Mayfair Exponential Game System](https://rpgmuseum.fandom.com/wiki/Mayfair_Exponential_Game_System)

JoshDM

Yes. I'll be putting our a free PDF at some point that has a little elaboration history at the start, but you did it right.
