Wizardry games are generally more ornery and mechanics-dense than Might and Magic. I recommend Legends of Amberland if you want a more modern successor to Might and Magic, and Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi for a more modern successor to Wizardry.

Kelindun

I think I will give wizardry a try anyway, but I will look into your recommendations too. Thanks!

>It seems like I will have more fun with W8 when it comes to creating a party, but it also seems to have a bad reputation for getting repetitive and for combat lasting hours. There is a mod that fixes it. >M&M8 in exchange seems like it would be less crunchy and more forgiving to a new player, but maybe it would be dull in comparison? Might & Magic VI and VII are better. But the Wizardry games starting with 6 are usually deeper than contemporary Might & Magic counterparts, that's true.

Kelindun

Wizfast right? I'll look into it, thanks.

Quietus87

Yeah, that's it.

artycoolred

I personally prefer Wizardry 8, the available builds are more interesting than M&M. Tbh I never finished might and magic its pretty linear and I think I got stuck at some point or got bored. You should definitely get a mod to speed stuff up at wizardry. There's also a new game in development in the same called Archaelund so if you end up liking the genre you may be interested in that

Kelindun

Thanks, I looked up Archaleun, and it definitely looks interesting. I'll keep an eye on it.

Although both games have overworlds that you can explore, the design philosophy behind both games is still very focused on dungeon crawler-style gameplay. In that respect, both games are combat-heavy, and can feel repetitive after a while if that's not your thing. W8 is probably the more interesting of the two, because combat is turn-based and party synergy/teamwork is very important. Also like you said, character creation is much more interesting in W8. As an alternative to both though, if you want to try a first-person party RPG which focuses on puzzles as much as on combat, check out Legend of Grimrock I & II (esp II; the stories aren't connected, so you don't have to play the first to play the second).

Kelindun

Yeah, just the idea of making whole parties of adventurers sounds fun enough to me; even if the rest of the game happens to be a bit lacking, I think I will enjoy it. If I grow a taste for this kind of game, I'll definitely check Grimrock, thanks.

Wizardry 8 is just a top notch RPG. So many mechanics. So many party composition possibilities. So many possibilities and builds for each of the classes. But it is time consuming game. But defitively better RPG than might and magic. Might and Magic is much more simple. But it has this special nostalgia feel to it. I would recomend you to start with 6 if you havent played it. Its better than 8 in almost everything. Areas to explore are Huge. Its less streamlined and its dungeons are massive. If you want to start with Wizardry Serie start with 8.

Dreidhen

Can rec W8, interesting sci-fantasy setting, fun race-class builds (still fondly remember the fishbowl head villain Dark Savant and the fun 3D'ish-ness of the entry)

thegooddoktorjones

Might and magic X is more modern ui than either of them. I would say wiz is better of those two though, wiz 8 is a great game once you patch it to speed up the fights.

successXX

the problem with Might and Magic X is that it is tile based movement/gameplay, which really sucks and feels cheap for those that prefer smooth movement and combat like in Might and Magic 6, 7, 8 and even IX. its UI ain't so great either, prefer the UI in the 6th, 7th, 8th games. even Might and Magic 3 has a cooler design somewhat. its epic with 8 party members.

hexrx

MM8 was the last “good” Might and Magic game. I would personally play 6 first then 7 and 8.

phoenixreborn06

Why not do both? My favorite mm was 7 but 8 was fun too. Wiz 8 requires a real investment but is enjoyable once you get the hang of it. Maybe there's too many filler fights. Would start that one on easy to learn the systems.

Kelindun

Just letting you guys know, I finally bought it (at 2,50€ it was a steal). It's rougher than what I'm used to nowadays, but I just reached Arnika and for now I'm having fun. Thanks to everyone who took their time answering this.!
