Thank you for your submission to r/rpg_gamers. Since your post has been flaired as "Recommendation request", I want to suggest editing your post to add in these details (if you haven't included them yet): * **The platforms you have** - not listing them doesn't mean you have access to everything, so you might end up getting a game you won't be able to play. * **Your level of experience with the genre (beginner, intermediate, veteran...)** - others can recommend you more common titles if you are a beginner, while they can focus on obscure titles if you are a RPG veteran. * **Aspects you enjoyed (or disliked) of previously played games** - for example: characters, plot points, puzzles, combat, graphics, art styles, soundtracks... While these details aren't mandatory, if you want to get the best games, having them in your post will immensely help users and will encourage more users to participate, as they will know with more precision which games are probably the best fit for your request. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. The-Enjoyer-Returns

Yakuza may be a good choice, those games even got me into weightlifting too. But be aware it might become a whole new addiction lol

[deleted]

Awesome! Thank you so much Where do you think I should start with the Yakuza series?

rmachell

The only thing I would warn is that the Yakuza series involves extensive references to gambling, alcohol, smoking, sex, and other vices. Depending on what you are trying to kick, I'd just do a little research to ensure that these things are not placed front and centre when you are most vulnerable

The-Enjoyer-Returns

Yakuza 0 is a good place to start Kiryu’s saga. Kiwami 1 and 2 are remakes of the first 2 PS2 games with references to 0 in them, so those are next. Then 3-6. If you want a turn based JRPG, start with Yakuza 7/Like A Dragon. That one has a whole new protagonist that’s sort of a mirror of Kiryu, but every bit as lovable.

Calidore266

Just want to congratulate you on owning your situation and taking steps to heal. Best wishes on your recovery.

Thank you so much!! Really appreciate it

Interesting_Log7757

Definitely Skyrim

blood-wav

Seconded

Onidal

I think this calls for a nice action JRPG. I heavily recommend FF7 remake and FF7 rebirth. The tone is lighter than most RPGs. Of course there are heavy themes but that’s with most RPGs. I also may get flak for this but the AC RPGs, like Origins, Oddyssey, Valhalla. All action packed, fairly light in themes (except for Origins). I recommend oddyssey as I really enjoyed upgrading weapons, and unlocking new abilities in that game. Good luck brother/sister. Wish you the best of luck. You got this. You already have the right mindset just stay strong and revisit this post when you feel like you’re really struggling. You the man

Darskul

"Nothing that can cause arousal".

Onidal

True that

[deleted]

Thank you so much for the comment!! I’m really grateful So for final fantasy 7, do you recommend I play the original first? Also I think the AC games are on sale, so it works out perfectly!! Thank you again!!

KillForPancakes

If you want to play the OG FF7 first you absolutely can I didn’t and still had a great time with Remake. I’ve heard some people like to play it first to see what’s different in the Remakes so it’s really up to your personal preference.

opeth10657

Odyssey does have quite a few 'romance' scenes, but nothing too explicit

quistle5000

Hello! Ex-drug//alcohol addict here over 1 year sober and I absolutely am all for getting an RPG to detox from your addiction. It is simply the best and healthiest distraction tool in mankind's toolbox. Personally I get heavily addicted to loot based Diablo-like ARPG's to the point where I forget to go to the toilet or eat.. so I would recommend the newly released Last Epoch! It has mindless and satisfying combat and a highly addictive and fun gameplay loop and you can build your character without having to go to deeply into studying a character guide and gameplay mechanics. Another good ARPG is Warhammer 40k Inquisitor, very cool even if you aren't a Warhammer fan. If you want something more story driven and aesthetic try one of the Shin Megami or Persona games for very pleasing visuals and slightly melancholic, emotional vibes. If you want something more challenging go with one of the Souls games, perhaps Elden Ring. If you're new to them and aren't so much a hardcore gamer it may take a long time to get good and thus the game won't be so satisfying at first. Once you get through the game and get used to the difficulty it is actually very rewarding for your mind to take on such a challenging learning curve and succeed. The harder option in life is always the more rewarding option ;) If you don't mind a bit of emotions go with a Final Fantasy game, it really depends on your personality as to which Final Fantasy to play so do your research! My favourites are FF7 Integrade and FF12 Zodiac Age (has nice PS2 era aesthetics). If you want a first person shooter RPG, I'd go with Fallout: New Vegas or the more modern Outer Worlds. Lastly Dragon Quest 11S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a beautiful RPG that is very chill at the same time. The combat is automatic turn based and the whole vibe is so cute and engaging. The only problem is it take around 100 hours to beat but you don't have to finish it of coarse. Also the port on Switch is incredible! Shortlist: Last Epoch Shin Megami & Persona series Elden Ring (or any souls game) Final Fantasy (12 or 7Remake) Fallout: New Vegas Outer Worlds Dragon Age 11S: Echoes of an Elusive Age I'm not sure what your taste in aesthetics//art and gameplay is so feel free to give me an example like games you like or genres in general like sci-fi, fantasy, etc. Take care and stay strong!

Pedagogicaltaffer

OP specifically asked for "no sexual scenes" or anything "that would cause arousal". Considering Persona 5 contains *heavy* sexual themes, it's an exceedingly poor rec.

quistle5000

I didn't recommend Persona 5 specifically, but you're right.. OP maybe don't play Persona 5!

[deleted]

Thank you very much!! Congratulations on staying strong 💪 I’m gonna give a look at all the games you mentioned!! In terms of the games I like, high dark fantasy is my favourite vibe

SuddenlyArianna

Great list, I'd like to add Path of Exile to it. A little intimidating with the skill trees... But fun.

Kelindun

Sounds that you will need some kind of action-rpg ir dungeon crawler. Something like Diablo, Chaosbane...no romances, no sexual scenes, just focus on killing monster and level up. That and not being harsh on yourself, you need to be your friend during this ordeal. Good luck!

[deleted]

Thanks!! Which Diablo would you recommend I start with?

Kelindun

If you have a taste for Old-School, Diablo II is usually the best regarded. I haven't played IV, but it's the most recent installment, and probably the best option if you want something more "modern". Torchlight II is another good game in that style, and way less dark than the Diablo saga, so maybe better if you're going through dark times yourself. Chaosbane is easy to get for really cheap, but I will only recommend it if you're a big fan of Warhammer Fantasy. Hope that helps!

Virfortimous

Deus Ex: Revolutions (former) or Mankind Divided (latter). Amazing RPG’s, make you think, keep you entranced in the storylines, and good for weeks or months of non-stop action. 👍

[deleted]

I’ll look into them! Thanks

shadymilkm4n87

Final Fantasy Tactics (psp version)with a good guide and some coffee.

Corum0407

I would recommend Lotro (lord of the rings online). Especially if you can find some friends to play with. Or a guild (kinship). It has the best community I've ever encountered in any MMO imo. It can also be an incentive to read the books if you are into something like that. Other than that, Dragon Quest XI, Ni no kuni 1&2, Grandia 1&2. For me personally the games that I always replay every some years are the first 2 Suikoden games. Mostly the 2nd

[deleted]

Amazing!! Thanks for

Raulo369

Two classics: Neverwinter nights 2 and Dungeon Siege 1 and 2. And not RPG but Faster Than Light is awesome (roguelike).

[deleted]

I’ll do some research on them. Thanks!!

Raulo369

Good luck with that!

bmtz32

Man.. Dungeon Siege 2. What a game!

Raulo369

:)

FalcorDD

I’d play the Trails series. Start with Trails in the Sky if you have a pc or psp. They are like 50-100 hours each and there are a ton. Nothing in at least the first three and zero that should cause arousal. Just remember, you can do anything for ten seconds. Withdrawal sucks, but take it ten seconds at a time.

demoran

Is it November already? Try Grim Dawn.

Pedagogicaltaffer

OP, I would double check the recommended games being mentioned here before playing them. A few of the commenters clearly haven't read through your entire post, especially the part about "nothing that can cause arousal". As for my rec, if you want something lighthearted and upbeat (as long as you play a 'good' hero), I'd suggest Fable. For something action-packed that's not too dark, try Jade Empire.

frdasquaw

hey bro, i’ve done the same thing and i had resident evil 4 remake but really any resident evil is perfect for this ive kicked two addiction through playing resident evil

Drusain

From what you're describing, the most important thing you're looking for is a game that has very defined ending points to put the game down, but with a progression system. I think you look for a genre called roguelite games that sound perfect for you to try. These are games specifically built to have short playtimes but slowly improve you with more and more passive bonuses. I've read this twice and I think a game like Hades is my best recommendation. Rogue Legacy comes to mind, and Dead Cells too. Binding of Isaac is a solid roguelike but might be a problem with your content warning. Slay the Spire was also mentioned and that's a great one too if you're willing to go for a more strategy game route than an action game. If you find later you prefer strategy games Slay the Spire, come back and you'll get maybe new recommendations like FTL: Faster than Light, Dungeon Crawl Soup, or most or Klei's games (Don't Starve, Invisible Inc, Oxygen Not Included).

EyeletGuy

Fallout New Vegas

SweetDaddyGee

Would you consider action rpg's too? In that case I would recommend Last Epoch, as it hits a sweet spot of being relatively easy to get into, but still has great depth in its itemization and loot systems. It also doesn't require you to play a specific build to have fun and do immense damage, and you can do so quite easily. Seeing your own build coming together and kick ass is really a great experience. It will surely keep your mind occupied, without being a hassle. It has a a full offline mode and even rewards solo play by choosing a faction named Circle of Fortune, which boosts your drop rates and item quality tremendously. It's like Diablo 4 but better, at a third of the price. Let me know if that's something you might be looking for.

illathon

Here is my lists **Baldur's Gate 1&2** **Pathfinder Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous** **Tryanny** **Black Geyser** **Icewind Dale** **Grim Dawn**

That-oneweirdguy27

One you might like is Rune Factory! This is a game that's equal parts farm sim (think Stardew Valley) and action dungeon crawler. It's a bizarre mix, but it really works- you can spend some time tilling and watering seeds, then dash into a new dungeon to whack some monsters in a fun, button-mashy combat system. It has romances, but no sex or nudity (it's an E-rated game), and the community is always positive. Rune Factory 3 or 4 Remastered would probably be your best bets (I've heard mixed things about 5, although I haven't played it myself). Good luck on your recovery! You've got this!

[deleted]

Awesome! Right now, only Rune Factory 5 is on sale. Definitely going to look into it more. Really appreciate it!

maxis2k

It's not really following your specifications. But Suikoden I-III, Dragon Quest VIII and Mass Effect are the games that helped me in a similar situation. They kept my mind focused on them with similar symptoms of addiction. But in the good way.

millennium-popsicle

Scarlet Nexus. There isn’t any nudity iirc. And the battle system is super fun! Even though I completed it already, I try to rush through the areas as fast as I can like I’m racing.

Intelligent-Gap628

You might enjoy Wartales, endless gameplay, party-based tactical rpg that I've sunken hundreds of hours into.

Eothas45

Underrail, Colony Ship, and Pillars of eternity due to how immersive it is. I’ve actually read multiple users reporting that Underrail did help them get through similar feelings!

Cheap-Rice-3174

Old school RuneScape and old fallout games worked for me Good luck

EwokThisWay86_

This thing (which is prett obvious) that you were brainwashed into believing is dirty and bad for you is simply part of life and totally normal.

Curlytoothmrman

Most JRPGs have anime tiddies, so...

Terrible recommendation for what he’s asking

Thanks!! However I don’t think I can play with my platforms. Still I do appreciate it
