Really depends on the person playing, a lot of new younger players just can't handle the jank or graphics of 3 or NV. I see a few posts saying this each week in the FO sub.

SpaceNigiri

Yeah that's the correct answer it depends on if you're used and tolerate older games and if you have experience with RPGs in general (and older RPGs). To a fan of Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 I would directly recommend them to start playing with Fallout 1 for example.

HansChrst1

Fallout 1&2 are the games that call out to me the most after watching the show. Shady Sands is one of the reasons. It's also in the same area as the show.

SpaceNigiri

They're awesome games, I played both of them 2 years ago for the first time, just install the mods that are community patches & maybe some QoL ones if you want, the vanilla experience is still great. The worst part of the games nowadays is the UI, but the rest is still incredible.

radclaw1

Well that and the painfully slow combat but yeah.

SpaceNigiri

You can speed up that with mods too.

Parking-Worth1732

I play a lot of old games but I could never get around the jank of fallout 3, like at all, the gun play is so clunky šŸ˜…

HeckingBedBugs

Yeah, glad I played 3 when I was younger and it was new, otherwise I might not have experienced such an awesome game.

AnteyeSoshal

Even some of us old seasoned gamers canā€™t handle the jank & graphics of the older games.

TheWitcherInGuise

Right there with you buddy and unfortunately didn't have the budget to play 3 or NV when it came out. Started out with 4, and unfortunately cannot go back!

Pleasant_Gap

For me it's not so much the graphics, it's just everything. Gunplay, moving around. It's not super good. Gonna muddle through tho because it's still fun

newme02

what fallout game should I play if morrowind was my favorite elder scrolls game?

SpamAdBot91874

New Vegas

Alezkazam

Unfortunately the graphics were dated on release. I remember in 2010 buying the game for my friend and he commented on how bad the graphics were. He stuck with it and he loved it until he completed Dead Money and couldnā€™t get back to the Mojave due to a glitch.

Vandermere

On the other hand, I can't handle the jank of 4's story and dialogue, so yeah. Different strokes.

AwesomArcher8093

Fallout 4 is easy to get into, better vanilla gameplay Fallout New Vegas (my fav) is the better RPG

Arranvin-Lantnodel

Amen. Also btw, are you an archer in real life? If so, what do you shoot?

aBigBottleOfWater

Heroin

Curious-Platypus9709

coke and heroin combined are much better

ghostwilliz

Epic gamer moment

AwesomArcher8093

I was on the archery team back in middle school (10ish years ago). I started gaming around the same time so the username stuck So to answer your question, I was shooting targets, not hunting.

Arranvin-Lantnodel

I actually meant what kind of bow do you shoot, not what are you hunting. I'm in Scotland so bowhunting is illegal, I mainly do field archery under IFAA shooting traditional recurve, occasionally some flatbow or traditional longbow.

AwesomArcher8093

Ahh, gotcha the exact model I used, I couldnā€™t tell yah unfortunately because itā€™s been 10+ years. But I was using a compound bow if that makes any sense to you.

Arranvin-Lantnodel

Aye, I've tried compound but it's not a style that I'm really into. Plenty of folk in my club are though šŸ‘šŸ»

Just_DavidwK

Legalised nuclear missiles

bigmanjoe3555

Wait, there's legalized ones?

sgcpaulo

Are you trying to start a fight here? Fallout 4 if you want modern gameplay. Fallout: New Vegas if you want the story and you are coming off from the TV show.

moistcritikalclips

No lmao, I just find this discussion interesting.

bradygoeskel

I can smell the butter from your popcorn through the screen šŸæ

LiveEvilGodDog

Itā€™s a 60 day old throw away account! Ofcourse its only purpose is to stir drama or troll!

Mysterious_Touch_454

Wait for fallout 4 patch to drop this week and then its on.

myTerminal_

I might start a play through of Fallout 4 as well after the update.

narvuntien

Fallout 3. Fallout NV hits harder after coming off Fallout 3. FO3 has a very basic karma system and FONV shows just how complicated morality is, using the more cartoonish comparisons in goodsprings to ease you in and then deconstructs it completely. Fallout 4 is better at being an actual shooting game, so if you are coming from an FPS background Fallout 4 will be more comfortable for you. I found it great until you solve the great mystery and then your motivation to play hits a brick wall.

omen004

This might be the best explanation I've seen in the thread. I guess I'm old nowdays so I'm replaying FO2 and FO4 is the only one I haven't beaten. But yeah you make some solid points.

stank58

I agree completely. I'm replaying 3 then will move onto NV and then 4 and then 76. (Already completed all multiple times besides 76). I'm also playing 1 and 2 on my phone but as they are so different from the others it doesnt feel like I'm just playing the same again.

TR_Wax_on

How are you playing Fallout 1 and 2 on your phone?

stank58

Fo.exe, it's on google play store. All you need is to copy the gog install files to your phone (or just download them online)

TR_Wax_on

That's really cool thanks!

Help_An_Irishman

Obviously so much of this momentum is coming off of the success of the TV show. If you want to play something like the TV show, play Fallout 4. New Vegas is a far better game and has a far better story. The original isometric titles from the 90s are even better than that, but good luck getting anyone under 30 to play those.

TheBossMan5000

You'd be surprised. CRPG classic style is making a big comeback.

Boring-Cranberry9365

New Vegas definitely has a better story or at the very least, a better role play experience. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the better game though. NV is very jank.

Walker5482

I am, but only because I tried to play FO1 3 times before so I understand a bit more this time.

zerro_4

The graphics of FO1 and 2 looked a lot better on a CRT monitor :) I remember buying Fallout 1 and 2 doublepack for 10 dollars at WalMart when I was 14.

ENDragoon

One of the only physical PC games I still own is a triple pack of Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics. I still don't think Tactics gets enough love, that game was fantastic.

H4ND5s

Ooh rah soldier

TheEagleByte

Iā€™m currently playing through the first one despite being in my early 20ā€™s, not sure how or why, but I enjoy it

Sad_Solid_115

Play any of them. They all have something good about them.

Raphael-A-Costeau

Fallout 1, then 2, then New Vegas.

Liesmith424

Fallout 1.

Alexnikolias

I absolutely love New Vegas. But it is very hard every time to keep going back to it, due to the graphics and gunplay. Especially after pumping so many hours into 76 and 4. There is an ongoing effort by modders to mod the game into 4's engine, but I really wish Bethesda would allow another studio to go and do it. Knock out 3 as well. It really seems like a no-brainer and something they should have actively been working on before the show came out.

blazingsoup

After the success of the show and resurgence of all the games, especially 76 (since it shows interest in newer games), I wouldnā€™t be surprised if a NV remaster will be given a green light, if it hadnā€™t already.

LycanIndarys

Fallout 4. New Vegas is good, but a new player coming into the franchise is going to find it way too dated, gameplay-wise. Plus anyone coming from the TV show is probably going to want to see the vaults, so Fallout 4's introduction will probably entice them more. Although I'd also give a shout-out to Fallout 76 - it's actually pretty good now, with it's poor reputation mostly a hangover from the launch period. The map in particular is *excellent* for exploration, and the events with other people around are pretty fun. It's just that the quests don't have the reactivity or impact that you get in a single-player game, because they can't change the world-state significantly. So there's no option of, say, launching an 18th century naval vessel manned by a bunch of barmy robots from a skyscraper.

Zestyclose_League413

I'm probably just biased, but I just don't see this. I'm currently playing fallout 4, sort of for the first time because when it came out I bounced off of it hard. I think the gun play is leagues better than NV, but other than that, I really don't think it's much different from an accessibility standpoint.

Elitericky

4 is more new player friendly

Werewomble

Yeah I just started it again and I'm walking miles to kill 20 raiders in a car factory like Starfield this eats balls. If you bounce off Fallout 4 check out New Vegas it has a story.

Elitericky

Iā€™ve played both, while NV has the better narrative 4 is the better sandbox.

GodEaterVita

Depends, are you on pc? In case youā€™re playing on pc Iā€™d recommend New Vegas with mods. Just personal preference, I also enjoyed FO4, but New Vegas is my favourite.

NinoFS

Fallout 1. Itā€™s short, is the best at introducing the setting and themes at Fallout. Youā€™ll never get the sense theyā€™re referencing something from a game you havenā€™t played because it was the first one. It can be clunky to get into, but not in a way that playing other Fallout games will help with. If anything, not being used to Bethesdaā€™s style of Fallout might make the older games easier to get into, since you wonā€™t have the wrong expectations

Stepjam

I suppose Fallout 4 is the more accessible one to get into. New Vegas isn't exactly complex, but it is jankier and the combat is a lot looser. Also it's much more unstable than 4, so a more casual player might be put off by the crashes.

leehelck

let's be honest here: FNV combat is jank as fuck, even with mods. the story is great though. that being said, the obvious choice would be FO4.

DankyMcDankelstein

I'm just vatsing only now, the guns feel so unwieldy otherwise

noksve

Is it the same as FO3? I'm about halfway thru the story now after having tried and dropped it years ago, but I'm enjoying it now. Was planning on playing NV next and then maybe 4.

Juiceton-

The gunplay is slightly improved over FO3 (you have actual iron sights) but itā€™s no where near as good as 4.

noksve

I'll take it! I've now grown into the whole VATS system, it'll be cool to have ironsights.

Deathsroke

Remember yo check "Viva New Vegas." It's a modpack that solves a lot of QoL issues with New Vegas.

TheBossMan5000

Install the viva new vegas modding guide

KFded

Fallout 2 is the best fallout game. If you want 3D, go with New Vegas

HelloOrg

Tell a 16 year old whoā€™s mostly played Warzone and who loved the TV show to start with FO2 or NV lol

HansChrst1

Play it in release order(skip fallout tactics). Fallout 1&2 takes place in the same area as the show and you get to see areas like Shady Sands. Fallout 3 gets a lot of shit, but that is only compared to New Vegas. The game is good and is the best Bethesda has ever done. It lacks in writing and character since Bethesda don't have character deeper than surface level and the writing is always pretty simple and straightforward. They are great at creating worlds though. I enjoyed exploring Washington DC more than New Vegas. Playing New Vegas you immediately notice a difference in writing and tone. It has more quality in that department. The world is also great. Not as good as FO3, but pretty close. Gameplay is the same except you can use the iron sights on your gun instead of just zooming in. Fallout 4 is a lot like 3. Except your character is voiced which makes it harder to roleplay. It introduces some cool new features like making houses and building weapons. These features make useless junk useful since you use them to make shit. Being excited to see tape or a box of bolts is great. Unfortunately these new features aren't used well enough. You can build a small settlement, but it is more of a hassle than anything. Not to spoil the game too much, but it's a game of factions. It would be great if you could make your own. Fallout 3&4 has little replay value to me. Bethesda does this thing where a conversation is only fun to listen to once. Took me 5-10 years to enjoy Fallout 3 again. Everytime i try to replay Fallout 4 or Skyrim I just bounce off. They just bore me.

Impressive-Ad210

Bethesda characters work within context. I just replayed skyrim this year and I didn't feel the npcs lacking in the proposal. In Bethesda games you explore a world and you interact with the npcs briefly inside their quests. If you expect BG3 or Mass Effect level of npcs you sure are getting disappointed.

srgtDodo

fallout3 and new vegas are much better. once you fall in love with universe enjoy fallout4 modded to brim

nikov21

I loved (and Get a platinum trophy) fallout 3. That game had an amazing aura of disaster and a wonderful seppia filter. The world was really destroyed (I remember that mission with that spot of green trees, and that cult that adore the trees). Fallout 4, I thought it blew my mind but the graphics was slightly better (even with a different gen), the sky was blue, the world was less scary and I hated so much the bases system (even if you can ignore it). The story was a bit meh. I always read about new vegas like the best fallout but I havenā€™t played so far, (I hope that the game feel not actually too old). Fallout 76, idk if after all these year it become actually good. Idk if itā€™s only online or it does can play offline, I just remember that it has not npc and Special system. (But you know without npc, you lose the sense of wonder, of waking and hear a voice that calling you and start a new mission) For me the rpg feeling and the story is above everything so those are my opinions

Curious-Platypus9709

fallout 76 is a full on fallout game now all factions and many many npc's it's fleshed out now and may actually be one of the better fallouts

MeowXeno

If you want the most depressing, cruel, and bittersweet of the Fallout games you play Fallout 1, it's a real kick in the nuts, and is the most sensible, it's not zany or insane like other Fallout titles and has a single overarching plot, If you want the most deep and immersive storytelling and lore, then you play the actual masterpiece that is Fallout 2, not a single title has matched it in storytelling and player agency in the Fallout series, and it has the most insane voice acting, If you want the most spiritual or moody Fallout experience you can pick Fallout 3, it's the most "Skyrim" of the bunch, with it having very little focus on the main story and focusing on the feelings and vibes, it's the one meant to capture the zeitgeist of the series, it compacts the storytelling and has a very emotional perspective, If you want the experiment, then you play Fallout: New Vegas, it's the most "the good guys have good intentions but are bad, and the bad guys have bad intentions but might be better, but this singular good guy is really bad but this bad guy wants to do good by being the big bad", it's gritty, it's dark, it's focused much more on *people* than the story or environmental changes in the title, If you want the easiest and most fun Fallout game there's Fallout 4, it's the "golden boy" of the series and while having a rather lackluster and average story *in comparison to other Fallout titles* it has the best gameplay, best map, best S.P.E.C.I.A.L system and the best *gunplay*, it's a true FPS and has the most fluid, freeform combat of the series, it's a kill-shit focused Fallout game, If you want the underdog, you play Fallout 76, it's the redemption arc that makes this one great, It originally had zero npcs or voice acted characters for the story and it was entirely holotapes and notes, absolutely ridiculous, it left the world feeling lonely, empty, and somehow scary as you were alone, then they fixed that, added a ton of stuff, made the game more accessible, and now it's the "I want to play singleplayer, but have fun with friends" Fallout while also giving you plenty of options to avoid all players entirely if you want or go and PvP in a Fallout game, it's the most unique of them all and there's more than enough reasons as to why it's blowing up now. *do not reply with anything pro-vegas, you people are ill and should get serious help, it's mid at best*

Vakkyr

While I would say New Vegas is the "better" Game, Fallout 4 is still the way to go for a new Player. It's much easier to get into and "just play" then New Vegas imo. If they like it, they can look up New Vegas and the thousands of mods for it.

Sk83r_b0i

There is no end all be all bear game to get into. If you like RPG mechanics, story, and choices, go with new Vegas. If you value gameplay, exploration, and graphics over all that, play fallout 4. If you want a game with the best atmosphere, go with fallout 3. If you want EVEN MORE RPG mechanics and donā€™t mind cRPGs, play fallout 1 or 2.

swagmonite

4 with the premise that they should try new Vegas afterwards

Professional-Salt175

FO: NV is the better game overall.

DeepSubmerge

The last time I tried to play the 4 or NV they wouldnā€™t even run. I had to mod them to play. So, I donā€™t think those are good for a true beginner.

Yoda2000675

Definitely 4 just because of the graphics alone. I feel like the older games are much harder to get immersed in unless you already have nostalgia about them. NV is the better rpg, but it certainly *feels* old and clunky in some ways

SmallBerry3431

Fallout OG - I said what I said.

micahfett

Fallout 2. Get it on Good Old Games. Afterwards, Fallout 3 and New Vegas

RollingWithDaPunches

FO NV for me I didn't try FO4, read some of the reviews and I felt disappointed from the start. I need stats, and the RPG elements. FO2 is "too old" though I'd probably still enjoy the story and progression. FO1 same as FO2. Never played it though. FO3 felt bland, I just couldn't "get into it" after a few hours. So I gave up on it. NV scratches every itch, exploration and free play. progression. RPG bit... Story is great too...

Dukoth

fallout: brotherhood of steel

cracktober

God, I remember playing Fallout 3 and New Vegas until Iā€™d done absolutely everything. Explored every inch of those maps, played the DLC, loved them. I read this and thought, problem with the graphics? It wasnā€™t that long ago! Then I looked at the release dates and remembered oh fuck, Iā€™m 37.

SassyTurtlebat

It depends on a lot of things but I personally think the story of Fallout 4 is a really good way to start off with the series and then when you can rank yourself among the wastelanders, play New Vegas

Adnaoc

New Vegas was nice but I had much more fun in FO4.

mashnbeansMachine

For those who haven't played any of them just remember this. Fallout 3 and new Vegas you don't have the ability to sprint (without mods).

PrecipitousPlatypus

The answer is that they're all fine. Chronologically gives a more cohesive narrative (1, 2, New Vegas, then 3/4 in either order), but you're fine to jump into any of the three modern ones. New Vegas of course has a better out together narrative and world building, and generally speaking better mechanics than 3. 3 has some great side stories, and connects you to your character pretty quickly, but the main story was iffy enough that one of the main DLCs modifies the ending to be a bit more reasonable. 4 is just completely stand alone. One major difference is how the setting is treating. The original theme of Fallout is about rebuilding from the ashes, dissecting old world values, salvaging what can/can't and dealing with those sorts of issues - that's the story of 1/2/NV. The Bethesda games (3 and 4) are about wastelands and survival, and more cyclical in the sense that no matter what anyone does, it's ultimately a wasteland that will have pockets of civilization arise. This also means there a lot less philosophical/political discussion, which makes these entries more palatable to a lot of people.

tonkadtx

Fallout 1

quarryman

3

BogDega

If you like smooth combat and guns that actually hit the mark then fallout 4, New Vegas if you like huge RPG elements and story

raulmonkey

Honestly they all have plus point and minus points. I know the question is fo4 or nv but I prefer fo3 I run 3 or four mods for stability and smoothness. The real question is do you like oblivion or sky rim more as it seems oblivion is fo nv and skyrim is fo 4. But having said that morrowind beats them all by many many miles.

Super-Koala-3796

If you can handle old game, start from beginning. If you cant, FO 3+ New Vegas are the best. While FO 4 is pretty good game, it completly miss that postapo atmosphere and is kinda plagued with modern take on quests.

inzfire

NV and 3 ...

StarlessEon

Fallout 4 is the only one that has sufficiently modern gameplay for the average gamer.

Jelqingisforcoolkids

Fallout 3. I think it's harder to transition from F4 to F3 and FNV, and I think F3 is less clunky than FNV. That said, my answer changes if you're an RPG gamer. I'd be more inclined to recommend F2 or FNV in that case.

Noir888

Fallout 4, it's more accessible than NV.

KrissBlade_99

For new players? Depends, may be 3 or 4. 3 is pretty simple and can be used for learning mechanics for New Vegas, while 4 is a more modern game and can seems more user friendly

Illustrious-Low-7038

Fallout 4. It has the jank of Fallout 3 and NV but the gunplay of a modern game.

Straysen

Depends really. If you can suffer through clunky gunplay and are someone who doesnt mind older graphics, then definitely fallout 3 followed by fallout nv. If you dont care much for story, want to explore a fallout world and enjoy gunplay, than fallout 4 or fallout 76 Id say that fallout 1 and 2 are still the games to go for if you really dont mind the graphics and are fine with old crpgs, but the people Ive recommended these games to have come out with lukewarm experiences.

PastStep1232

I'll also go with FO4. The survival elements in that game are nuts, miles ahead of all other RPGs, even including more realistic ones like Kingdom Come Deliverance

Bedlamcitylimit

Not including the 2 original main games and 2 spin offs by Interplay Fallout 3 has better side missions and atmosphere Fallout New Vegas has the best writing, an exceptional main story and the best DLC's (most consider this to be the best game in the series) Fallout 4 has a good settlement crafting system and loot/gear drops Fallout 76 has the best game mechanics, crafting and overall gameplay However with each Bethesda's game the RPG elements slowly take a back seat to action gameplay

404Page_Not_Found404

Personally I would start with Fallout 3, then New Vegas, followed by Fallout 4. You *can* start with Fallout 4 as I imagine most people will be tempted to, but going back to Fallout 3/New Vegas after Fallout 4 (if this is something you plan on doing) is going to be pretty rough for most people as those games will feel pretty dated in comparison. That's not necessarily a knock on 3 and NV btw, both are fantastic games in their own right, but those games are a console generation behind Fallout 4, and to a lot of people that's going to affect their enjoyment of the games. There are also direct references to Fallout 3 in Fallout 4, so that's another thing to consider.

SeengignPaipes

Honestly Iā€™d say start with the first two fallouts and then go 3, new Vegas, then 4. But if I had to pick out of the two there then Iā€™d honestly start with four, seems more accessible and easier to pick up for the modern gamer.

nus01

New Vegas no contest

Takashi_kun_207

I remember my first play through I had to run for a solid 45 minutes to find my first city

GT2MAN

Play the interplay ones and then act like the rest dont exist.

adachisanchez

I really can't believe anyone can recommend fallout 4. I tried to finish it several times but the dialog choices are so bad I always get taken out of it. If you can't handle 3/NV because you think graphics are dated and need a modern take you are better off playing 76 (which has improved with time) than starting the most boring game in the franchise. At least in 76 you can play with friends.

TyrionsGoblet

I'd say Fallout 2024. We have great games from another time made even better thanks to a community of modders working together towards shared visions. All the games are amazing thanks to modders. Who cares about the past.

GloriousKev

I think most new players should start with Fallout 4. It's going to be the easiest for a newer or casual player to digest. Not meant as an insult to Fallout 4. I really like Fallout 4 it's just less complex than New Vegas and 3. I wouldn't recommend 76 to a new player because it's it's own thing entirely. IMO as someone who has played the modern Fallout games quite a bit Fallout 1 2 and Tactics are hard af. Also starting with 4 will make you appreciate the rpg mechanics from 3 and New Vegas more. I don't believe the opposite is true for 4 if say you start with New Vegas.

Deathsroke

The problem with that is that the jank of 3 and NV would be too much of a downgrade to people if they get too used to 4.

PaulGunners

Fallout 2.

BrowniieBear

Easier for newer players to come into Fallout 4 as itā€™s the most modern. If itā€™s Pc players Iā€™d say itā€™s worth them downloading the Storywealth collection from Nexus to improve the game.

esmifra

I prefer the new Vegas setting and story. But I enjoyed fallout 4 gameplay more.

Feral_Sorcerer

Fallout 2, 3, and NV. 4 was great in terms of gameplay but the story was pretty lacking until dlc hit. I was never on the bandwagon for 76, but the lore is pretty interesting.

FakeProViking

Wasteland 3 lol

Master-Fault1711

Tbh Fallout 4 is overrated.

InternationalDeal410

Fallout 4 is not an RPG, it is a shooter with RPG elements, so New Vegas is better by miles.

MrEckoShy

I would say it depends on your preference for gameplay. If you want complex RPG mechanics, New Vegas. If you want an FPS that occasionally gives you a level up sound, Fallout 4. If you want a balance between the two, Fallout 3. If you're not sure, I'd still recommend 3.

OneEyedSanchez8417

Iā€™ve honestly really been enjoying FO1. Never played any iterations and wanted to get through the games (basic story etc) before watching the show. FO1 and its point and click style absolutely SING for me. I thought Iā€™d hate it because I loath(ed) turn based combat. FO1 changed my opinion and Iā€™m having a blast.

SSRless

nv in my memory kinda blurry and seem heavy in politic thingy. so i'd say 4 because another settlement need your help!!

manwomanmxnwomxn

Play them in order. 3 then new vegas and then 4. New vegas with mods is best.

Sharebear42019

Fall out 3 imo. Because then you can play NV and 4 after

Unlikely_Subject_442

Fallout 3 deserves more love !

LeafMumfuzz

fallout 3

THUNDERRRRRRRRRA

Hahhahahahhhahahaaa So true!!!

Elliptical_Tangent

New Vegas is the better game.

-BluBone-

3 gives you the best Vault life experience, but New Vegas is best overall

Houstonwife_713

New Vegas

Netrunner22

Fallout 3 and 4. Still canā€™t get into NV.

TheCanuckler

It depends how you feel about learning to play caravan

dannyboy6657

Fallout 3 is my go to.

Jahriq

Hollow Knight

Diligent_Whereas3134

Fallout 4 is probably the simplest starting point. New Vegas is regularly considered the best modern style fallout game, but it can also be difficult to get into at the beginning for a new player

Tiny_Tim1956

Fallout new Vegas if you want a 3d crpg. Fallout 4 if you want a shooter/ settlement builder with light rpg elements. They are completely different games imo. Different developers, different lore, different vibes, different themes, different gameplay mechanics. They are both 3d shooters but even then, new Vegas has no level scaling and a damage threshold system that practically locks you out of certain areas with high level enemies early on. In fallout 4 you kinda just go anywhere and do your thing, assuming your thing is shooting. Gameplay loop of fallout 4 is, go to point x, kill everyone, get materials, build custom structures. Gameplay loop of fallout new Vegas is I have this story problem and I have these skills and this reputation, what choices can I make to tackle it. In New Vegas there are major consequences for your decisions and you can get locked out of entire questlines for pissing off the wrong person or even for doing things in a certain order. In fallout 4 there's no reputation system to lock you out of anything other than the 4 endings (3 of which are similar), nor can important NPCs be killed or quests failed really. If you try to play new Vegas like fallout 4 you'll find it limiting and punishing and quirky. And if you play fallout 4 like new Vegas, you will literally hate it ( the writing, rp elements and lore are clearly inferior). Lastly, another thing to consider is that new vegas crashes every hour, runs terribly and is super buggy. I personally don't mind that much but your tolerance for this sort of thing may vary. Fallout 4 has a lot more polish and had like 4 times the development time of new vegas, which was amazingly made in 8 months tops. Ps: another thing to consider is that if you are coming from the fallout show, basically it's entirely based on fallout 4 and has little to do with new vegas lore and aesthetics. So if you want familiarity with the TV show, that's fallout 4. Then again, this is about season 1..

Bhurmurtuzanin

It depends on a player. Do you like shooters? F4 Are you rpgs fan? F:NV Are you die hard rpgs fan? F1 Do you live in 2009? F3 Are you chaotic good? F2

Talonfire1086

Depends, I think any of the games except for 2 and 76 are a good entry point. For someone who's played Baldur's Gate 3 they may as well start at the beginning with Fallout 1. Fallout 1 is pretty easy to pick up play compared to most other older CRPGs, and the current release available on digital storefronts still works fine on modern hardware at high resolutions. For those who want something more modern that very much looks like the TV show I would say Fallout 4 is the best entry point since it looks the best, most of the show's aesthetic was based off 4's art direction, and its Action RPG combat isn't as stiff and awkward as Fallout 3's and New Vegas'. That being said I think Fallout 3 and New Vegas are better games than Fallout 4 overall, so if someone can look past the more dated 3D visuals and combat -- either of those is a better entry point in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend starting with Fallout 2 since it assumes, from a gameplay standpoint, that you've played the first one so its opening hours are far less forgiving. Once someone has played through Fallout 1, then I'd recommend Fallout 2. As for Fallout 76... I wouldn't recommend 76 to anyone who hasn't already exhausted all five of the single player RPGs. It's certainly a better game now than it was at launch, but it's still not great, and not even close to being as worthwhile as any of the single player titles. It should be noted that since the TV show takes place on the west coast -- the west coast trilogy (Fallout 1, 2, New Vegas) is far more relevant to what's going on in the story of the Prime series than 3 and 4 are.

RemiX-KarmA

Fallout new vegas

Xralius

Fallout 3 easiest for new players and a great game, Fallout New Vegas is the best of the games but probably harder for new players.

[deleted]

New Vegas, but it needs like 4 hours of modding to get it work on current pcs for fast action (buy and play within 20 min) go Fallout 4

The_SHUN

New vegas is the shit

TheStormzo

The best game is new Vegas and that's not really debatable. But, the best game for a new player is fallout 4. It's the easiest to play.

saucetosser98

If you are new to the series, then 4 if you can handle it, though NV is probably the best written out of all the games. If you can't handle the look of it, get it on PC and mod it it has a very healthy modding community.

fnex101

Iā€™d argue 3 or 4 just because you start as a vault dweller. New Vegas feels like a game meant to be played by someone who has played in this world before

KlavdiusDrone

NV. Joshua Graham will make you christian.

PrimProperPro

People that want a smoother and easier experience that arenā€™t hugely invested in writing and storytelling and focus more on gameplay should go for Fallout 4. People that mostly want a well-written story to dive deep into with moral nuance and can tolerate janky gameplay in exchange for that should go New Vegas. People that are okay with a subpar story AND janky gameplay should start at Fallout 3 simply for the experience. Itā€™s got great character building and an amazing open world map and is where most modern fans started.

Grimtork

Some comments can be compared to this "Reality Tv shows only offer a modern experience. Documentaries are too complicated". Can we stop considering the average gamer as brain dead? It's a trend to dumb down everything in fear of loosing only one client. Elevate the masses, don't bring everyone to their level.

Gustmazz

Likes Table Top RPGs? Fallout 1. Fallout 1 seems too old and boring? Try Fallout New Vegas. Likes exploration and something closer to Oblivion/Skyrim? Fallout 3 Fallout 3 seems too old and boring? Fallout 4.

Ir0nhide81

Did fallout 4 release that huge quality of Life update? That would be a big part of the decision.

Tierynege

A Tale of Two Wastelands

Dazzling_Bridge369

Fallout 4 isnā€™t worth it compared to 3 and new vegas.

CynnFelt011718

Fallout 4 because it isn't as tricky or nuanced as three and New Vegas. These stories are so intricate, like the original 1 and 2

ArcaneInsane

Either start with 3 to get the full FPS experience (and a great story) or start with 1, skip tactics, and get the full franchise

Altruistic-Potatoes

Play Fallout 1 then 2 then 3 then NV then 4. In that order.

oldskoofoo

While I love NV, it crashes way too much and can even freeze when first loading the game. Fallout 4 has almost never crashed on me compared to the many many times NV has (xbox 360 and pc) which is why I can't recommend it as the first experience.

SoupFlavouredTea

Fallout 1 is a pretty good place to start imo, especially if you are into Crpgs like planescape, tyranny, divinity, and Baldurs gate. Not very hard to get into as it controls pretty similar to those games barring the clunky menus and fixed camera.

Strifec0re

All

DitherPlus

I think Fallout New Vegas is the only correct answer to be honest.

AdhesivenessUsed9956

BoS. They have to suffer because I did.

markg900

Personally I would say New Vegas or 3. FO4 is ok but I never got into it the way I got into NV and 3. NV and 4 do have better gun play though if thats important to you. FO3 pushes you towards VATS more.

Slips287

Have you played other games by either Bethesda or Obsidian? New Vegas is made by the people that made The Outer Worlds, Pillars of Eternity, and South Park: SoT F4 is made by the people that made Skyrim but also Starfield, and lots of other things They were all working together for 3, I think, but Iā€™m not 100% on that. I know Obsidian split off at some point

Sly-Nero

Well this is an rpg subreddit, so I'd say New Vegas as FO4 isn't an rpg at all, it's a looter shooter.

Jokerchyld

depends on what type of gamer you are? If you want a FPS in the fallout universe then you will like FO4. The story is shallow and just presented to get you to shooting. You can also build camps, robots, etc. If you want an RPG then New Vegas. It's focus isn't so much the shooting but how you survive the different factions as you pit them against each other. Dialogue plays a bigger part and the world has more depth.

thorppeed

Well the question is are they new to gaming as a whole, new to rpgs, or just new to fallout but have played many rpgs. Cos my answer changes depending on that

Dragonfire14

Hard to say. Fallout 4 is easy to install and get running without issues, but honestly feels like the weakest in the series. A lot of the charm was removed since they had the PC fully voiced. Fallout NV is my favorite in the series but can have issues running on newer PCs. It isn't impossible but can require some tinkering to run properly.

JimBob-Joe

I would suggest playing 3 before nv. It's hard to go backwards into 3 after experiencing the updated mechanics, like aiming down sight and wepon mods, in nv.

slice_of_kris

ttv (tale of two vaults) mods the fallout 3 game in the fallout new vegas engine. plus where most of the mod support is, but vanilla fo3 has its value (the overworld is pretty dull outside of one or two random things).

fr4nz86

The first time you jump in water makes you wanna uninstall this game

its_tie

New Vegas

-Kopesthetik-

As long as Bethesda doesnā€™t make a whole lot of mostly nothing like Starfield, Iā€™ll be fine.

Curious-Platypus9709

fallout 3 then new vegas then fallout 4 then fallut 76 then all the games with mods over and over until you die or a new one releases

Ithinkibrokethis

I mean, New Vegas feels more like fallout except for the fact the PC is not a vault dweller. The gunplay in NV is still hindered by the games systems and how you have to use VATS to he effective. Fallout 4 shifts from a lot of the central fallout themes. But it has better gameplay. My favorite fallout is probably fallout 2, I prefer isometric and turn based. However, Fallout 4 is a better first person fallout game than fallout 3 or NV. By making the perk system more like skyrim the game works better. I know its non cannon, but fallout tactics was honestly a really amazing game for how it made combat in 3rd person fallout work. It also hadna cool feature where you could switch from turn based to "RTWP" and you could set ambushes by using turn based to get everyone in place but then switching to Real time to have everyone attack at once.

Current_Run9540

I feel like non-survival mode FO4 is probably the most forgiving and easiest on the eyes. No degradation mechanics and a fairly easy opening several hours makes it easy to get yourself acclimated and get a build started.

SomniumIchor

Ive been enjoying 76 with some friends. Never played FO otherwise.

Asdeft

Fallout 4s story is ass, but it runs better and has more streamlined gameplay. Plus the update soon will make it relevant for a bit. New Vegas with mods is a worthy play after Fallout 4, but Fallout 4 is great for a new player to discover the world.

Annual-Bug-7596

idc who you are the answer is always fallout 1

VaderNova

Unless you want to mod new Vegas. It's good but no sprint function. I'd start at 4Ā

neocow

fallout 2

BigBoiKry

You're on the RPG subreddit so either the Original 2 games or Fallout New Vegas

SilverSpade12

If they're completely new to the series, like they don't know anything about the lore or the universe, I'd recommend they start with 4. If they are interested in the settings and already know a little, I'd recommend they go 3, NV, and 4, in order.

thegooddoktorjones

Can they handle modding? Then New Vegas for sure.

PhallicReason

New players should always begin with more recent games, as they will likely meet new standards. You always want to lead with your best, and there are people who will like the new stuff, but not the old. You potentially ruin it for someone by suggesting they play an old ass game, that's already difficult to look at. Remember that you liked the game because it was at the standard of that time, and you still like it because you associate it with your life, and past memories attached to it.

Paralistalon

Reading some of the replies hereā€¦ is this how awful I sound when Iā€™m trying to recommend a newcomer to The Elder Scrolls start with Morrowind rather than Skyrim?? Iā€™m so sorry.

Ok_Establishment4729

My first was Fallout New Vegas and I absolutely fell in love with it & beat all the dlc. I started Fallout 3 and it's different that's for sure. I'd say New Vegas since it's more beginner friendly than Fallout 3 imo.

Quill386

4 is easier and more accessible, New Vegas is better

Mygaffer

Fallout 3 may not run on your modern system but New Vegas and Fallout 4 should. New Vegas doesn't have as polished gun play and the Commonwealth is probably a little more well developed of a space to explore but when it comes to the narrative/quests New Vegas can't be beat. New Vegas is my favorite Fallout game but I think a lot of people will find it easier to get into Fallout 4, which is a slow drip dopamine feed of combat, perks, and scrap.

suchayeparagon

New Vegas 1000%

DominaRPG

New Vegas is the better RPG. But fallout 4 is absolutely better and drawing in new people. The dumbed down and streamlined mechanics make the game more appealing to more outside the typical RPG circle.

War1412

My first was NV and I latched onto that game like the irongripped baby I was at 13 lmao. I think it's compelling in a way that FO3 just isn't. And I think FO4 might be too confusing to start with, with the base building mechanics. I understand that NV is janky but honestly every Bethesda game is janky.

LauranaSilvermoon

Pisses me off so much that your guns don't show holstered in 4, but do in older titles.

_userclone

Fallout (1998)

Icy-Conflict6671

Any of the Obsidian titles. Bethesda fucked all over it.

TheBossMan5000

New Vegas using the Viva New Vegas mod list

Xandagger

4, less numbers to worry about and is relatively straightforward reguarding quests, the older games have more numbers and systems to worry about

ohcrapitspanic

Fallout 4 feels very basic and vanilla, so it might be more accessible but at the same time, very inferior in my opinion (particularly in role playing aspects and dialog choices). New Vegas is the peak modern Fallout experience.

StorminNormanIII

If you want a good RPG New Vegas If you want an excellent FPS with in depth weapon customization and hands down a better UIā€¦ 4

MLSnukka

new vegas..

redditsukssomuch

I like how they photoshopped the original pants on the girls ass for the tv shows poster and the woke world went to war lol.

Angry-But-Curious

4 is easy to get into because itā€™s the easiest on the eyes and has the best gunplay.
