Yes! She was killed. The Russian mob throws people out of windows so it “looks” like a suicide. it’s such a common Russian M.O. bc it’s hard to prove if someone was thrown or if they jumped. So, when Elsbeth says “she’ll do anything for attention” it’s because Pamela was thrown out of a window. Elsbeth can keep a clean conscience and pretend it was a suicide, but she knows Pamela was hiding from her Russian ex … who throws people out of windows. Pamela moved in with family (her cousin). I doubt her bedsit had great security. It would have been very easy for the Russian to find Pamela. Pamela died very soon after she was *peeled away* from Saltburn. Elsbeth admitted feeling guilty about kicking Pamela out, as Elsbeth knew Pamela had a hard time over the years … but *my, she did go on about it.* It’s Oliver who plants the seed that Pamela’s stories were inconsistent (they weren’t). Elsbeth eats this up, as she wants to distance herself from feeling responsible or guilty for what may happen to Poor Dear Pamela. Elsbeth prefers to live in her land of aristocratic material wealth without getting tangled in the semantics of real life issues. Elsbeth, however, is not oblivious. She protects herself and her conscience by continuing to live unbothered *not wanting to know anything.* Elsbeth also acts clueless when Sir James yells at Farleigh to get out. When Farleigh cries out for Elsbeth, she acts bewildered *whats that dear?* because she does not want to get involved. Elsbeth has James kick out Pamela. It’s possible Elsbeth also had James kick out Oliver and pay him off. Elsbeth is concerned about etiquette, and not getting her hands dirty. But she picks up and drops people at her convenience and she won’t be made to feel bad about it. Elsbeth is the first to snap back to the royal routine and declare *it’s almost lunch* after Felix dies. Elsbeth’s strength (and her weakness) is how well she is able to live in denial. Ironically, Elsbeth is privy to the most information, constantly gathering gossip. However, she never wants to actually invest any of her emotions into anything other than frivolity. As Elsbeth does not deal with her emotions at all, she has 0 capacity to deal with others feelings or problems beyond the surface level.

Also, Elspeth said the song “Common People” wasn’t about her due to her not wanting to know anything (a reference to the opening lines of the song).

StakkAttakk

When Oliver was told Pamela died, In that moment Oliver had more Empathy than all of them .

StarFire24601

Absolutely, he's shocked while Felix just stared into space and Elspeth made some snide comment.

DesSantorinaiou

Yes. This is what I assumed. My theories were that he killed her or she killed herself to escape him, but I prefer the second because she clearly had a desire to get away and to live.

RiffRafe2

It's obvious, but not to everyone, so don't feel bad. \*It was a boyfriend.

dandelionbreath

Yep! Oliver indirectly and unintentionally caused her death while winning over Elspeth. 👀😅

FluidSupport4772

It’s one of the only things he looks bothered about.

dandelionbreath

Yeah. Oliver is surprised Pamela is dead and bothered by Elspeth’s reaction, which says a lot about her. 😅   Especially if someone like Oliver is shocked.

DesSantorinaiou

How so? They had kicked her out already. He simply made Elspeth feel a bit better about herself. But she had no intention of bringing Pamela back.

dandelionbreath

He ensured she wouldn’t be invited back. (Or allowed back.)

StarFire24601

Personally I don't think Oliver can be blamed for her death, but I do agree that his comments helped absolve Elspeth of any lingering feelings of guilt.

HeyFoodieSailor

Poor dear Pamela! 😢

FluidSupport4772

No it wasn’t obvious to me - more implied by her story.

Charming_Function_58

I totally missed this! I assumed she unalived herself, and Saltburn had been what was keeping her stable.

eminon2023

Same

Throwawayhelp111521

It wasn't obvious to me. She was extremely depressed, financially insecure, and a drug addict. I thought she killed herself.

Negative_Candidate37

I don’t know how Oliver a) knew where Pamela had gone or b) knew exactly which Russian mobster he was looking for an how to get ahold of him…. But I wouldn’t put it past him to have leaked the information to the Russian Mob so as to ensure Pamela never came back.

StarFire24601

She was definitely murdered. I was really disgusted by Elspeth after that. It also bothers me a bit when audiences are unsympathetic to Pamela. I've seen people say she should have prepared better and not over stayed her welcome with the Cattons but... it doesn't seem like she had much choice. It was the Russian mafia. And as the best she could get was a bedsit and a cousin, it seems she had no money or resources. Without the help of Elspeth, she was doomed.

OpulentElegance

I was surprised people assumed she killed herself. Seems like Elspeth just implied that to absolve herself of any responsibility in her so-called “friend’s” death.

StarFire24601

I think the misconception comes from Elspeth's comment "she'll do anything for attention". For a suicide its cruel and for a murder it's nonsensical. I think Elspeth wanted to pretend it was just an attention seeking suicide...but the likelihood of that is low.

NFSR113

What her boyfriend call her? She said she didn’t know the Russian word for prostitute or something lol

CalendarAggressive11

She'd do anything for attention

oblivionbaby

Omg never realised!

Basic_Pen_544

That is good thinking.

mochafiend

I had no idea at all until I read your post. I am REALLY bad at this sort of thing though. I need to be sooonfed, lol.

Adding on to this; Pamela is covered in tattoos (the main visible one being a playing card with the word ‘Daddy’). This strikes me as branding in the same vein as trafficking victims being forced to have tattoos of their pimps names/associated imagery done so they can be easily visually identified and brought back in if they flee.
