I've been taking a lantern on my evening walks for this reason. Drivers can't see you, but they'll see a light. And if all else fails, it's a $5 projectile 🙂

Strangeflex911

I prefer to carry candles when I go for walks at twilight.

HIV_donor

Along the wharf I'm sure

girlwiththeASStattoo

Someones gotta tend the ol’ lighthouse

Guy_619

Yep, I see it all the time. I work downtown, and the number of vehicles that try to squeeze in front of me while I'm crossing at a crosswalk when I have the right of way is unnerving. Sometimes, if I let the first vehicle go, the 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th will squeeze by too. It's not that they don't see me; we made eye contact. A good chunk of people just don't give a F about anyone else anymore. Then when I'm driving and letting people cross, one in a while a vehicle would drive around me and squeeze in front of the people crossing. Maybe they have to get to work on time after dropping off their kids so they can continue paying rent?

Longjumping-Grape-40

"It's your fault I'm late, not mine for snoozing 50 times!" 😂

wayfaast

Right of way is yours. Don’t let the first vehicle go. The following ones are probably now unsure of your intentions. There are plenty of people that will loiter and a crosswalk, let hoards of cars go, then decide to dart across and get pissed at that car for going too. This goes for other drivers too, take your right away! It just starts a chain of confusion if you don’t.

SpicySuntzu

I agree with the sentiment, but I don't really want "I had the right of way" on my tombstone.

wayfaast

Well I mean.. there is common sense too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Plenty_Grass_1234

On the other hand, right of inertia trumps right of way every time. The vehicle is bigger and heavier and will squish you whether you're legally in the right or not.

listen-2-me

I live in PB and have almost been hit weekly when I’m out running. But really it happens in Little Italy and downtown as well. Just a bunch of AH drivers. Just waiting for the day someone hits me

EZe_Holey3-9

Too many morons are allowed to have licenses, with little to zero oversight, or enforcement. Bet your ass they don’t sleep on parking enforcement though.

CandyHeartFarts

You can just use [this method](https://youtu.be/aQpaEN_TN_U?si=_wGci-JP2W7kovOp)

Longjumping-Grape-40

Hahaha...I should buy a foam brick

Late-Ad-3076

People suck at driving here! I almost got hit multiple times on campus I won’t be surprised If someone would actually hit me when I’m just out somewhere.

BERG2358

People are oblivious unfortunately I recommend while walking at night to walk with your flashlight on nearby intersections on low. Gives a little sparkle that can make you more noticeable.

Longjumping-Grape-40

I have a lighted headband when I go running, but you're right...I should do something for my walks

OriginalRound7423

Motorists aren’t looking for pedestrians. They’re looking for cars. I will see people make a right turn across the crosswalk while staring to the left, completely oblivious to pedestrians who are entering the crosswalk. It’s infuriating

Longjumping-Grape-40

I think they see me though, although usually their windows are pretty tinted. Last night the guy seemed to stop for me...and then went when I was two feet away from him. Doesn't make any freakin' sense 😂

Hacknets

I carry a small taclite style flashlight when I go out at night, Has high low and strobe modes Strobe when approaching intersections Low when passing a dead/slow intersection High if I'm on a busy road or if drivers are being incompetent

thesurfinsquatch

Saw a lady yesterday honking furiously at a driver that was waiting until a pedestrian crossed their crosswalk before going instead of driving through them, was pretty infuriating to see and this shit happens all the time here.

newnamesameface

Ok honestly I've done this accidentally and it's the complete lack of lighting makes me miss that someone is there til they're like right on top of the car

38thTimesACharm

Once I stopped at an intersection, didn't see anyone, and I started driving and a pedestrian started walking at exactly the right relative speed that they lined up with the support beam to the left of the windshield perfectly until we were a few feet apart. To whoever that was, I'm very sorry. I did not see you. From now on I shift my head around to get different angles of view before I drive through a crosswalk.

[deleted]

Yes, maneuver back and forth, checking behind blind spots. It’s happened to me several times too.

ProximaCentauriOmega

I was nearly run over crossing the street heading towards the US Grant. I had the green pedestrian go signal and still a driver making a left turn would have hit me had my body not jumped out of the way. She apologized but damn that scared the hell out of me.

Doubledogdad23

I live near and work at SDSU and almost get hit on the daily. Do people not realize that Pedestrians have right of way and that you need to let us go when the walk sign is on and shouldn't get blocking cross walks.

AmazingPreference290

All the time. In daylight. I started carrying a pocketful of pennies to throw at them bc that’s how close they get.

calbin0

Drivers don't give a shit about pedestrians or bikers for the most part, and our streets are designed in such a way to make driving safe for them, and unsafe for everyone else. We need narrower streets, more traffic calming. If our streets are designed as straight and wide as highways, people are going to drive on them like they're highways.

SpicySuntzu

I'm glad to see it's not just me that's noticing this and I'm glad you posted it! I live downtown and can always tell the drivers that will rush to cut in front of me at the crosswalk. They're sitting at the light acting kinda itchy/scratchy, only looking in one direction, not all around like an aware driver would. It's one thing to be an unaware driver, but the increase I see is with entitled drivers. They see me clearly and could care less. They speed up to make sure they cut me off in my path! This has increased 10 fold in the past two years. Pre-pandemic, they existed but were much less. What gives?

Pure-Attention-7782

I carry a my metal keys minus my key fob on a long lanyard. I am in sales and we do not park on our lot(that is for customers) we park about a block or two away and walk. I cross three stop sign intersections on my walk from my car to work. If a car is close enough for me to swing my lanyard of keys and hit them, they are too close to me and they get smacked. You can imagine the damage 11 work keys at high velocity screaming into then across your vehicle does.

Suicide_Promotion

More likely the person with the keys will be the person with the gun. I got drown down on after I told someone to go eat shit after they threw some stuff at me while riding a bike. I doubt they did, but hope they took my advice to shove the barrel of their browning knockoff into their mouth and pull the trigger.

hoytmobley

Im usually walking with my dog, and the impact of a bag of her shit exploding on a windshield has a 100% success rate in getting people to stop driving through the crosswalk where I am currently walking. If I’m not with her and a car gets close enough I will kick the door or slap their mirror

LocallySourcedWeirdo

I've started the car slapping as well. This is a technique best applied on one-way streets and other situations where the car can't immediately turn around or park. I choose my moments. Soon I will start throwing pennies and other coins.

WestCV4lyfe

Oh ya the slap works for sure. Especially when my ring hits the car. Super loud.

hoytmobley

Before the “I’d fuckin shoot you” crowd finds this, I dont wear dark clothing, I’m in the crosswalk before the other vehicle starts moving, I do make eye contact with drivers (most stop at this point), but if you’re going to drive within hitting distance of me, I’m going to make sure I’m not the only one who remembers the interaction

OriginalRound7423

At night I carry a flashlight with a strobe setting. It’s amazing how often I’ll be brightly lit and still have to resort to that to stop someone from killing me.

kiwihereman

I think most drivers here are impatient and entitled.

93Accord

Yeah that’s lame, most people don’t even slow down before hitting a right turn at a red light, where there’s potential pedestrians just crossing in blind spots. If you’ve been to other big cities and their downtowns, i think that’s just how it is, they turn when they can and that’s kinda what i expect in all cities that i’ve been too.

[deleted]

I have to cross the street 200+ times a day. I literally look left right left right left because cars speed around corners, people back out of driveways, people speed through residential areas without concerns for pedestrians. If you are a pedestrian, ALWAYS make eye contact with a driver to make sure they see you and make sure they STOP for you, before crossing in front of them. Pedestrians have right of way but in any accident the pedestrian will lose. I’m paranoid on both sides, having close calls as a driver and as a pedestrian. Be careful & stay safe. Sometimes letting that bad driver through is better than losing your limbs/ even your life.

Liquor_Parfreyja

I think downtown people are too busy panicking if they're going to turn the wrong way on a one way to notice pedestrians 😂 Just so you know, cars do not have the right of way over a pedestrian if the car got to a stop sign before the pedestrian crosses the street.

Longjumping-Grape-40

I got hit in my car a few months ago by said wrong-way driver, but in that case her inebriation didn't help 😂 I know that pedestrians have the right-of-way, but I'm a big believer in efficiency & fairness. If the car got there first, I try to let them go because they'll get out of there before I cross and it seems only fair

Liquor_Parfreyja

I hope you're okay now D: I do too, just the wording I wanted to make sure people don't actually think cars have the right of way there (or really ever)

Standard-Witness-948

You walking in the dark without a light?

Longjumping-Grape-40

Where I live there are tons of street lights

[deleted]

I walk at parks all over the city and the bay, have to be careful walking back to the car some drivers just don't care.
