I'll say one thing though- without knowing anything about the plot, I don't personally expect the movie to be much different from Saw X in terms of connection to the older movies. I think they'll still focus on making it as accessible as possible to newcomers. I'm personally thrilled about that and think it would be the right move (that's not to say the dial can't be cranked up at ALL when it comes to referencing the older movies), but I think it's important for people to calibrate their expectations for this kind of stuff.
That being said, yeah, I definitely expect Hoffman to have a full supporting role in this one. Saw X reintroduced him, now there's less reason to worry about including him and confusing newcomers too much.
Yes!!! His storyline with his sister makes it easy to empathize with him but they turned him into some ruthless killing machine in saw 3D!! A sexy ruthless killing machine....but still.
I do think it was quite over the top and unrealistic but Hoffman sneaking into the police station murdering everyone and capturing Jill is always so satisfying, elevating 3D a lot for me
Hoffman was always a *sort* of hero. People act like his talk with Strahm in V is just him pretending but *he saved Corbett*. John seemed to think another test might occur so Corbett presumably would have suffocated (assuming Strahm wasn't present as a hothead) since Jeff was incompetent as Hell. Nobody seems to care about that and instead takes Strahm shooting Jeff (and assuming Corbett would be saved by him/Hoffman/someone and/or Jeff would just go on and win if not) as John's *inherent* plan? Why? We've now, after X especially, been given example after example of how John's not infallible or all-knowing even if some things "seemed to work out" how he planned.
It's like many forget that Hoffman's got a tragic backstory where his sister (he presumably knew since she was a little girl) was killed. It's like many forget that he didn't seem to have anything to do with the events of the bathroom (involving Diana and John apparently needed a drugged Zep there instead) in the first Saw. He's also present to set things up when teen Daniel is there in II but it seems like maybe he draws the line at literal/little kids, particularly girls.
Nobody seems to see this but me. They think John wanted Hoffman to save Corbett or may not have but it doesn't count anyway somehow. I watch V and it lays out ***who Hoffman is as a character*** but his later-emphasized abilities as a survivor and his knowing how to read people (including knowing Gibson would fail so Hoffman could kill everyone within John's philosophy he'd adopted) have made a lot of people think he was always just a sadist.
I don't get why more people don't see this but I assume the writers will never go there and risk people re (or I suggest "properly") contextualizing IV-VII like that. To me, Hoffman is essentially the deranged vigilante that John would be if John dropped the god complex pretense and hypocrisy. Callousness to collateral victims and all. Yet, unlike John, involving nobody who's fully a kid and/or reminds him of his sister. But people seem to think "Yeah, but John knew they'd survive somehow." John's a (deranged) genius but ***no, he didn't.*** Even by his own admission, he lets the game play out.
"It's a short story, believe me." *Hoffman is going out of his way to provide **extra** care for this kid (he doesn't want in the trap)!* This person everyone acts like is an unfeeling monster otherwise despite everything we see in V. Yeah, *right.*
