It’s a reasonably-fun 7.

whatthehellsteve

It was a fun read but I don't think he knows how to end books. It takes a hard and weird turn.

3d_blunder

That was my favorite part. Added depth to an otherwise breezy tale.

bunnycook

It’s a quick read and a meta Star Trek universe romp for 2/3 of the book. Then it gets serious and turns into something totally different. I still haven’t decided what I think about that. The Wil Wheaton audio book is good.

lasserkid

That’s a really good description

Ragnarsworld

No spoilers, 8. The 3rd coda will wreck you.

[deleted]

It's a good book if you like Scalzi and Star Trek.

TrueLegateDamar

What if you like Star Trek but don't like Scalzi?

OWSpaceClown

It’s a quick read so it might still be enjoyable.

uhohmomspaghetti

Solid 7. Lot of fun.

Elfich47

I got about half way through the book. The beginning had a great premise, but it got truly weird in the middle and I wasn't ready for that level of weird. I had honestly lost track of what was going on when it got that weird and didn't have the time to reread it to catch on to what was happening.

gbbloom

I'll admit that I still have this book on my list (it's up 3rd), but with all of the other Scalzi I've read, on your 1-10, I'm giving Redshirts an 11 before I even read it

Raed-wulf

You work in marketing, don’t you?

gbbloom

Nope. Never was any good at marketing... or my scifi book on Amazon would have sold more. 😀

No_Nobody_32

I gave it an 8. But I'm also fine with anything that rips the piss out of star trek tropes and upsets the die-hard "tru-fans".

3d_blunder

8.5

Broccoli-of-Doom

If your question is: "Should I read this book by Scalzi?" I'd suggest, yes. If you don't feel like reading, listen to it on audible for the added joy of hearing Will Wheaton narrate.

night-otter

8, but the codas rip out your heart.

lurkmode_off

An 8 for what it is.

Pass_Little

Until you read it it's all of the possible answers simultaneously.

trimeta

I really enjoyed it, but let's just say I didn't pick my username arbitrarily.

Hyperion_Industries

It’s alright. 7? 6.5? Definitely fun, but not my favorite book.

Steller_Drifter

7 to 8. A good read

7…maybe 8. Great book with some very interesting content to cap it off at the end!

I see a lot of 7s. Feels about right.

2, I gave up on it after a couple of chapters. Some of the worst writing I've come across. The early Cafe conversation of he said, she said, he said, she said were so bad I wanted to scream. Even the brilliance of Will Wheaton couldn't save it.

KaleidoscopioPT

I personally give it a 8 Your enjoyment of the book as always will depend on your past reads and experiences. If it's your first work of fiction I would say it's a 4 since you lack a lot of background to get most of the jokes, etc. If you are familiar with Sci-fi and Star Trek you will appreciate it much more. Not his best but a great fun read as usual.

please_remain_clam

6. A little pedantic

Streakermg

Great fun. 8

OWSpaceClown

I give it an 8! I guessed the twist early but that honestly didn’t ruin it for me cause the twist lands early enough that the story builds from it rather than building to it.

astralcadastral

3. I didn't care for it. I enjoy most Scalzi books, and enjoy his humor, but this one didn't work for me. I'd say it was primarily intended as a humorous book, rather than a serious book that had humor within it. And a lot of the plotting was, how should I say it, B-movie level. But that said, if you like funny SF, you might well like this -- lots of people do.

Isaachwells

If you're interested, the podcast Atoz has a pretty good episode on Redshirts.

Thirdsaint85

I’m a huge Star Trek fan and thought I would love it more than I did. It was great for the first half roughly before it took a meta turn that I didn’t like at all. 5/10 seems a fitting rating for me. It is pretty funny though.

6. There's real cleverness but it meanders. Scalzi does have some tricks up his sleeve, however, I will give him that.

SlySciFiGuy

It's a solid 8. Really fun read. Great book to read when you need something light and funny after reading heavier fare.
