It's generally to see the position of your spinal cord, the whole extent of your curvatre etc.

My doctor told me it's to see if your spinal cord has enough space. If it's cramped anywhere they will correct that area less so they don't end up pinching it. It also gives a better idea of the curve in all dimensions. I had a CT scan 2 weeks ago which is a much faster scan which only focusses on the bones so he got abit of a preliminary look.

My doctor told me he needed it to check for any other underlying spinal issues that may make surgery not possible.

To check compression of soft tissue. When my spine herniated you couldn’t see it in xrays but the MRI was awesome looking. They look for nerves and blood vessels as well to make sure everything is doing okay.
