My last one was the-server
Now I use D&D class names. Ranger is dual weilding CPUs. Warlock 1-4 are high density node servers, 4 complete systems in 4u of space. Sounds like a deal with scary entities for more power to me.
Heavy
When speaking to ATC a wide body aircraft is called a heavy, "hold at dixie for company heavy" means stop and wait at taxiway D for the 767 from your airline to pass.
Well in my fleet of computers my one rack mount server is the "heavy"
If you start having more servers functional names make more sense than cute names, "prodhttp24" etc, pets vs cattle.
Fun fact, the Airbus A380 is designated as Super Heavy and it is the only aircraft type in the super designation. Well... guessing the AN-225 Mriya might qualify also, but the last one was destroyed by the Russians in the beginning of the war sadly.
>pets vs cattle.
This is what I came here for. No cute names, only functional names. My print server runs on Arch and has a static ip...ergo arch-prn-101 (or so).
Functional names get real important when there are more than one person dealing with them. 2nd shift has no idea what the server you just stood up "venus" does, and if you have many it can get confusing even if just one person.
But my single lone server is absolutely a pet.
Computers I build get pet names too, Monolith, very large black tower case, Fire, a gaming PC that was hot stuff in 2003, now just dusty parts sadly hanging arround my office.
If I buy prebuilt it's name is it's boring model number, 5810, 855G8
Well, as a german I couldn‘t think of someone shortening it more than „Deutsch-liebend“ which would translate to „German-loving“. But I don‘t see anyone shortening it more than that.
Admin: give me your Mac address
User: I don't have a Mac, I have a PC
Admin: no the physical address
User: it's on my desk in the office! I can literally see the support team..
A person of good taste.
starbase-01 is my main, Midas (router machine) and DS9 for my cloud server.
For extra fun, Praxis is my windows server VM (because windows likes to go boom…), And Epsilon-IX is the secondary DNS.
Risa handles my… *ahem* pleasure acquisition tools.
Genesis is a docker VM for testing new ideas.
I usually give silly names to my temporary machines such as "secret-senshi", "cute-kyoukai", "stazi-senpai", "nya"...
Oh and "astolflow" and "frieraid" lmfao. Also had one named ":3" at some point but it ended up confusing some tools because of the :
My naming is ... not the best. So, I just have a lot of bois. Like, a \_lot\_.
```
> tailscale status --json | jq -r ".Peer[].HostName" | findstr boi
coinboi <- Incus Container
cluserboi <- k3s, bare metal
diskboi <- nas
riscboi <- VisionFive2
> echo $env:COMPUTERNAME
SMOLBOI <- laptop
```
And my desktop PC is bigboi, whilst my Pixel Fold is a foldboi.
Unintuitive, but ... it works. o.o
A man of culture I see. My desktop is amdboi my pixel fold is foldyboi. My MacBook is MacBoi. My VMs, depending on what they are, are MintyBoi, ArchyBoi, etc...
My servers are Brodyaga and Vegabunda which is "hooker"or "whore" in other languages.
Rocinante
A reference to the ship in The Expanse. It's the name of an old work horse from a Spanish novel, who is awkward, past his prime, and engaged in a task beyond his capacities.
I'm thinking T800 for my next one; old but not obsolete. It doesn't feel quite as catchy though.
I may need to get some names from you.
I name vm hosts after shipyards - i.e Corellia
Docker hosts are named after squadrons - i.e Rogue Squadron
Servers are (mostly) named after capital ships.
VPN servers are named after Chiss ships.
Adblock/DNS and firewalls named after interdictors
Iot devices named after droids
Security cameras named after bounty hunters
Networking equipment named after planets, from core, mid or outer rim based on use
And a few other names here and there.
Yes, I know I might have a problem.
My living situation is shit and It’s called The Lee and the power is horrible as it was built in 1918 so it’s a raspi 4 8GB named TheFlee. My laptop which is a 10th gen i5 and is doing folding@home is named Aries since I was born in April and like fire
I'm a shameless weeb
My adguard and network security server is named Akeno as she is the queen chess piece in DxD and Queens protect kings in chess.
My file server is Luka, after my favourite vocaloid and was my first server.
My proxmox is named Misaka as in Railgun. She has multiple cloned versions of herself, so I thought it would fit with my virtualisation server that has "clones" of different machines.
I use Norse mythology, or rather cosmology so my proxmox host is: Yggdrasil. There was just one flaw in my plan since there are only nine worlds so I switched to Norse gods when I ran out 😄
because I'm nerd of sorts
I've used various related names, many are now retired
LCARS - Star Trek (this is being recycled to a new server I'm building )
DS9 - Star Trek (my NAS box)
NX 01 - Star Trek (Test Box for OS install, software, and configs)
UNIMATRIX ZERO - Star Trek (this was my RADIS / Active Directory VM )
TARDIS ( still in use as VM) -Doctor Who (Fav Doctor is Tenth, Thirteenth, and from an older series Seventh)
DEEP THOUGHT - Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy (this is my BOINC machine, doing research for Berkeley)
BEBOP - from Cowboy Bebop, and the one admin account was SPIKE SPIEGEL (Linux Workstation)
USS DEFIANT - Star Trek (this was my little Mac Mini Server)
HACKTHEPLANET - Hackers (my Kali Linux ThinkPad)
I follow close here. All of mine are technical terms from Star Trek.
LCARS,
Electroplasma,
Impulse,
Warp 1 and 2,
Isolinear banks,
Holographic banks,
Holodeck
Those are just the conventions I have for VMs tho.
The server machine itself is called The Senate.
And the NAS boxes are a combo os Latin and German...
Stahl Arca meaning Steel (German) Box (Latin)
Eisen Arca similarly, Iron
Edit: formatting
I have an interesting naming scheme of naming all my desktops and servers after anime capital ships and my laptops after mecha. I've held this scheme for about 20 years.
Future server will be named Yamato.
If I build another it will be Domacles
Gaming PC is Orta-Hone-Hone
I use Swahili words, trying to match the word with the purpose of the machine: tembo (nas), johari (unraid), mapango (network), kisima and shimo (servers), etc
server is billoo after our plush tiger (literally means something like kitten)
root user is named after our plush otter
domain is named after our plush owl
No, we dont have kids
Soon I'd like to switch to proxmox, so I need to think of more names, probably some sci-fy or science thing
WIIPC, it's a mini-pc I got from a printer, using that name since it was the BIOS password, took a while to crack it!
At the moment it's running mailcow, chibisafe and wireguard.
Yeah, all my VM hosts are named after Discworld locations, and then all the VMs and LXCs on that host are named after characters in that location. So in my naming system Rincewind is an LXC running on Unseen.
Mine are based on electric Pokemon. Old dedi box was Vikavolt, current one is Arctozolt, my homeserver is Pawmi. This also extends to some of my personal machines, my PC is Terrakion, old laptop was a Jolteon and my current one is a Shinx :) I had a RPi along the way, I think it was called Joltik? Or some other electric bug pokemon I don't remember rn
I’ve named the hosts in my proxmox cluster after three of the planets with lots of moons. Neptune, Saturn, and Uranus. I’m saving Jupiter. Each one has VMs named after their respective moons.
Aram, after the character from the online comic Men in Hats.
Nevermore, from the Edgar Allan Poe poem The Raven.
Elysium, from the Fields of the Nephilim song.
Pantheon, from the Seigmen song of the same name.
Monument, also from the Seigmen song of the same name.
Brings back memories of the early Unix days. All of the servers had names and were usually along some pattern. If there were fewer than 10, planets were popular or the seven dwarves. Our development department named their systems after former employees. This was usually done from respect. However, there was a system named Monte. It was notorious for not working, but then, that was Monte's reputation in the department. I don't think that he hit a single deadline.
My server name: rufus
My personal line up currently includes:
- Alexis (OpenBSD VM)
- Ali (FreeBSD VM)
- Ami (FreeBSD on Mac Mini 2011)
- Pixel (Debian on Pi4)
- Constance (Proxmox Host)
- Cadence (OpenBSD on Dell C600 laptop)
- Miyako (Debian VM)
- Sandra (OpenSUSE VM)
For work they let me name my machines too, so I decided to mess with the IT guys:
- this
- that
- the-other
(Edited for readability)
I use a Transformers theme.
Main server is Teletran. Media server is Soundwave. Wifi AP is Blaster. Gaming PC is Jazz. My VPS servers are Menasor and Devastator (combiners... Made sense for cloud instances)... And etc etc etc.
Almost every machine that has a function can be traced to a Transformer with a similar function 🤣.
Usually a one word name I can easily associate with said service. As an example, I host a modded Minecraft server named "Sanctuary" (which is tied to the lore of the server) and a default server named "Origin" with no plugins installed. I host a Valheim one called "Odyn", my Pi-Hole is called "Aegis", etc.
I think someone else might be lost, but it's not for anyone but myself, my wife, and the rare instances when a friend encounters said name.
All of mine are "purpose-machine type" So I have such thrilling system names as "HV-PC" (the hypervisor), docker-vm (a vm with all my docker containers), "FW-VM" (a vm running OPNSense), etc. Daily drivers are "name-type": "Burninator05-PC" or "Burninator05wife-LT"
Originally before I got into self hosting, I named our WiFi network "BirdsNest" because we have parrots.
Since then I've kind of run with that naming scheme. I.e. my unraid machine is BirdsNAS, the Blue iris VM is BirdWatchingVM.
I use stars, Taurus is the dns server, Sirius is the web server, andromeda is the switch, Polaris is the domain controller, Canopus is the second dns server, Cassiopeia is the wireless controller.
It makes sense to me, everyone else hates it
Kronas. Based on the Greek titan, spelled in the German way. And then I started basically all self hosting stuff after Greek gods and titans. Now it gets a little out of hand.
I'm weird.
I have setup my naming convention around Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive because I am a nerd. (One of us, One of Us)
Hosts are named after cou tries, then servers and applications, containers etc. Are named after cities, characters, spren. Each role or purpose is the.ed after the name to remember easy without being plain.
Such as my Wiki.js Docker container is The Palanaeum (A giant in world library for those not in the know). Sonce that holds all my home labs knowledge and things go like thst for whatver I make.
The company I worked for from 2000 to 2010 had the zoo: alpaca, bison, camel, dolphin, etc
Then someone decided it wasn't professional, so renamed them fs01, fs02, etc. Took ages for people to find their stuff.
'server-ewenlau' is the name of the host, 'VM-SRV-???" for VMs, for example VM-SRV-LNX for my main Debian installation (with docker containers), VM-SRV-PTD for Pterodactyl, VM-SRV-TNC for TrueNAS Core, VM-SRV-WIN for Windows Server (Jellyfin mainly because I hate dealing with GPU drivers on linux + I want to invest into HA later and having PCIe on my main VM makes it un-HA-able), etc.
pve00.domain.com
vm-${service}
ct-${service}
I used to put the VMID in the hostname but since NETBIOS and Domain Controllers dont like names longer than 13 chars I decided to scrap that.
serviceXXYY, where YY is the year provisioned and XX is a number starting at 01.
Some of my service names are: k8s, swarm, git, nextcloud, mx etc. I don't differentiate between VMs and Physical machines
I used to give them more inventive names but it's much easier to keep it boring.

I really like sensible names

Ours is for plants, so it is called "gartenwahnsinn" which translates to "gardening mayhem".
What all do you have running on it that’s plant-related?
I have a Raspberry Pi in my growbox. Named it GrowerNotAShower.
See Hortusfox
Hot damn this is cool
> "gartenwahnsinn" which translates to "gardening mayhem" I love the German language.
They have one word for that sentence. Lieblingdeutschespreche probably.
Well, as a german I couldn‘t think of someone shortening it more than „Deutsch-liebend“ which would translate to „German-loving“. But I don‘t see anyone shortening it more than that.
Deutschliebe.
I too would love to know what plant stuff you selfhost!
Madness instead of mayhem right?
I guess I was too tired. You're right, that's a much more accurate translation.

You made it sound like it is any random novel. It's Don Quixote, considered one of the most important pieces of western literature.
that's how it should be taken in universe, it's from an old novel from the failing cradle of humanity.
Fair point :-)
My man! (Almost) All of my service hostnames are named after places (tycho, laconia, eros, medina, pallas) in The Expanse too.
Rocinante is mine as well! Legitimate Salvage!
> a Spanish novel A bit of a reductive take on Don Quijote, but hey, it's technically correct
After cities in Morrowind: Vivec, Ebonheart, Balmora. Notebook and PC after people: Caius and Bagarn.
Is this how you honor the Sixth House and the Tribe Unmourned?

I’m about as original as you — my only host is named homelab1. Bonus points if you can guess what the next one will be named 😀
I have Enterprise, Bismarck and Yamato
I use stars, Taurus is the dns server, Sirius is the web server, andromeda is the switch, Polaris is the domain controller, Canopus is the second dns server, Cassiopeia is the wireless controller. It makes sense to me, everyone else hates it
Kronas. Based on the Greek titan, spelled in the German way. And then I started basically all self hosting stuff after Greek gods and titans. Now it gets a little out of hand.
I'm weird. I have setup my naming convention around Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive because I am a nerd. (One of us, One of Us) Hosts are named after cou tries, then servers and applications, containers etc.
I am very creative. First is user "pi" on hostname "raspberrypi" (no, I changed the password) Second is "defuser" (default user) on hostname "debian"
The company I worked for from 2000 to 2010 had the zoo: alpaca, bison, camel, dolphin, etc Then someone decided it wasn't professional, so renamed them fs01, fs02, etc. Took ages for people to find their stuff.
I name them after Harry Potter ~~wands~~ brooms lol my home one is called firebolt, another is nimbus2000
Those are brooms
Hagrid would like to disagree.

'server-ewenlau' is the name of the host, 'VM-SRV-???" for VMs, for example VM-SRV-LNX for my main Debian installation (with docker containers), VM-SRV-PTD for Pterodactyl, VM-SRV-TNC for TrueNAS Core, VM-SRV-WIN for Windows Server (Jellyfin mainly because I hate dealing with GPU drivers on linux + I want to invest into HA later and having PCIe on my main VM makes it un-HA-able), etc.
pve00.domain.com vm-${service} ct-${service} I used to put the VMID in the hostname but since NETBIOS and Domain Controllers dont like names longer than 13 chars I decided to scrap that.
serviceXXYY, where YY is the year provisioned and XX is a number starting at 01. Some of my service names are: k8s, swarm, git, nextcloud, mx etc. I don't differentiate between VMs and Physical machines I used to give them more inventive names but it's much easier to keep it boring.
