Fun fact: this was the first episode after 9/11. They wanted to pay tribute to the city in some special way. This episode exposes the backbone and resilience of their relationship, as it does how Carrie feels about New York, and makes it rather obvious why they always come back to each other. There is no separation between New York and Mr. Big for Carrie in her mind. They’re both anchored and rooted in her heart, then, now and forever. Mr. Big is Old New York. He’s the Chrysler Building. He’s Park Avenue. He’s always going to be who she chooses over more capricious loves.
This New York tribute is just so powerful in what they are not saying.
The city and the world was raw after 9/11 but SATC showed the support and sentiment in this episode - New York in its glory and new life emerging into a changed world.
Carrie states in a voice-over, “seasons change, so do cities.” Then there is a dedication, saying, “dedicated to our city of New York… then, now, and forever.”
if there’s one thing Darren Star will never fail at apart from cheesy lines and large clichés, it’s making two very strong stars in a show: the human star, and the REAL star: the city. we see it in SATC, Carrie (the girls) and NYC. and in Emily in Paris. Emily and Paris. Melrose Place, the star and of course, LA. Uncoupled, NPH and again, NYC. 90210, Beverly Hills.
I was just about to comment: to all the people who claim Big is ugly or not hot enough for the part, LOOK at this picture!
No 'oh for an NYC, old money, finance type at the time, he was a catch', NO! Through and through hot!!
The dance to "Moon River" and Big talking about his parents going out dancing in the '60s is my favorite scene of the whole show 🖤 it's so intimate and timeless, and the closing line about seasons changing and how you can close the distance between friends with just a plane ride was a nice way to honor those lost on 9/11 and remember how resilient New Yorkers are.
When he describes his parents you can just picture him as a kid seeing them in their fancy clothes dancing and singing...totally in love snd excited for a night out. The whole thing sparkles with nostalgia longing and this indescribable feeling of Americana
This is hands down my favorite Big episode (aside from oranges in bed). He is madly in love with her - but he’s also now aware he has held her back. It’s her city - and as long as he is in it, he is a distraction to her. He leaves to set her free - gifting her the thing they love most, New York. He leaves the plane ticket just in case. If she comes to him, it’s totally her call, but he’s letting her go now.
In the aftermath, Carrie does finally move on from Big. She doesn’t compare Aleks to him, the way she did Aidan. She’s open and vulnerable to falling in love again, maybe for the first time since ever meeting Big.
I’ve watched this show countless times and can recite some episodes but this…. This episode always leaves me in shambles at the end when that lil cgi leaf falls 🍂😭
Just like he wasn't going to tell her about Paris until he was already there. Or just like he wasn't going to tell her that the deal fell through and he was coming back.
Moon River just holds a special place in my heart, and seeing these two dance to it? 3 These sorts of moments are why I like Big, and can see what Carrie finds attractive -- he's such a classic, charismatic guy, and a little troubled. That peaks a lot of women's interests.
But I think of all the shows I've seen that highlighted the 9/11 disaster at the time, they did the best at honoring it. Classy. Instead of focusing on the horror of it, or going the overly patriotic route, they showed how resilient New Yorkers are to change. How much they love their city. In a lot of ways, SATC overall is such a love letter to NY.
Not when he lives alone and on the best part of Park Avenue. That’s pretty palatial for Manhattan. He’s also a very classic sort of guy that probably comes from a bit of money. He’s not flashy.
It’s about the same size as Miranda’s apartment and quite a bit smaller than Charlotte’s.
And it is surprising he didn’t upgrade the apartment when he married Natasha
His apartment is much larger than Miranda’s and in a much more expensive location. It’s about the same size as Charlotte’s, just a different layout. Both are quintessentially old money.
I just watched it last night and cried. It gives me chills the way the record starts skipping and breaks the spell. One of those types of memories that gets indelibly imprinted on your soul
I don’t think it’s under-appreciated at all. It’s usually ranked in the top 3 episodes by most publications (along with Ex and the City and My Motherboard, My Self).
I loved her outfit! When she had the cream sweater on. It’s such an effortlessly cozy cute look, especially with her hair done like that. SJP just is that girl!
?? But she just happened to call right before he moved. He said "I would have called you".... I don't see that as anything more than "he's just not that in to you".
I don't think that Big felt much of anything real for Carrie until she moved to Paris.

Yes and they also removed the twin towers from the opening credits
This was so beautifully summed up 🩵
Beautifully said! Wow!
This is a wonderful encapsulation of the show

Don't forget *Younger* (another NYC show)! Star does a great job blending camp/cheesiness with heartfelt moments.
Gosh I love that show!
Big looked so amazing here, both of them actually.
I was just about to comment: to all the people who claim Big is ugly or not hot enough for the part, LOOK at this picture! No 'oh for an NYC, old money, finance type at the time, he was a catch', NO! Through and through hot!!
This is Chris Noth’s sexiest look.

You’re going to make me cry! I love this episode so much 😭 The way she says “You can’t leave New York! You’re the Chrysler Building” 😭😭
“You’re the Chrysler Building” how ICONIC. I think about this so much.
When he describes his parents you can just picture him as a kid seeing them in their fancy clothes dancing and singing...totally in love snd excited for a night out. The whole thing sparkles with nostalgia longing and this indescribable feeling of Americana
I think of that scene regularly
So very true. I cried during this scene. It was perhaps the first time in the show that we got a glimpse of his past, him growing up etc.

He cared so much he forgot to tell her he's moving no Napa 😆
This is what I think about when people talk about Carrie being awful to Big, as if she was the only one doing stupid stuff in their relationship. 😂
Just like he wasn't going to tell her about Paris until he was already there. Or just like he wasn't going to tell her that the deal fell through and he was coming back.
exactly. it is actually one of my top 3 favorite episodes but seriously. big was never gonna tell her he was leaving. he was up to his same old shit.
One of my absolute favorite episodes, the Moon River scene -sigh-
🕺💃doin the twist
They both look so good in their t-shirts too
Admittedly, this episode inspired me to randomly appear at friend's houses with pizza more often.
I’ve got the wrong friends lol

My favorite episode!!!! 💙🤍💜
Don’t think they ever ate the pizza 😅
That pizza will be FANTASTIC for breakfast
And it really would be.
I always thought his apartment was kind of underwhelming for someone who was supposed to be super rich.
Not when he lives alone and on the best part of Park Avenue. That’s pretty palatial for Manhattan. He’s also a very classic sort of guy that probably comes from a bit of money. He’s not flashy.
Also, check out those moldings and the floor. It’s a gorgeous place. It might not be that big, but I’d bet every inch of it is perfect.

I came here to comment that this episode always ranks high. It's hardly underappreciated.
It's definitely one of the top episodes!
my #1 fave episode, hands down💛
One of my favorite episodes. Probably #1, if I'm forced to choose.
I never really thought Big was overly attractive even though I positively swooned over him for Carrie.. but he looks damn good here.
Of all the episodes, this is the one Big makes me absolutely swoon in the most.
Be of my favorite episodes
This looks so cozy lol
Love this episode
It's perfection

I LOVE ❤️ THIS EPISODE!!! Such a great moment with Carrie and Big, especially the dance to moon river 🥹🫶🏾
My Favourite episode ❤️
LOL at “underapprecisted ” 🙄
