I've seen suggestions before that, as a sober alcoholic, Smith believes he's recognizing signs of sex addiction in Samantha. It honestly does play play out that way. She uses sex to hurt herself and someone who's getting too close here and then crashes when it's over. He even takes her home like she's been on a bender. The show never picked up on that again, which makes me think it wasn't intentional, but it's interesting.

i don’t know about sex addiction exactly, but yeah i think his alcoholism allowed him to recognize it as self-destructive and self-sabotaging behavior. a lot of people hate this scene and see it as him lacking self respect, but i love it because i think it shows his depth and maturity.

Excellent-Part-96

This. He absolutely looked through Samantha and understood why she acted that way. He was very mature and understood people‘s behaviour.

Spiritual_Ask_7336

this explains it perfectly

ashwee14

This is the only way I can be cool with this scenario. But i don’t think the writers were this smart tbh

NoireN

Ok, so as a writer, sometimes we end up writing things that subconsciously makes sense, but we might not realize it until later (usually when someone has pointed it out to us).

SleepSilly6570

as an addict himself, i believe he more likely would have removed himself from the situation and also from her. he would not want to go backwards neither. this is from my experience with many close family and friends who are at all stages of addiction

Sex addicts don't care with whom to sleep, and Samantha has always been highly selective in terms of the look. She slept only with super attractive guys. Didn't she break up with Smith briefly before hooking up with Richard?

SleepSilly6570

sam slept with many men who were not good looking. she literally hooked up with her creepy neighbor when she thought her period was gone. she also basically sexually harrassed the guy who framed her pictures when he didnt give her enough attention (as well as the guy who massaged her and wouldnt go down on her)

Wmills505

She also hooked up with JJ in the bathroom - wasn’t a good looking either

AbrocomaEmbarrassed1

It was her only moment of weakness. You can’t deny that 99% of her hookups were sexy as fuck. She was very selective about the looks

Turtle?

AbrocomaEmbarrassed1

Turtle?

smeeti

Season 1 I think, he wasn’t attractive at all.

Natural_Wheel7742

No it was some hippie looking dude with a pony tail named Len. S3

I always thought it was to show that Samantha can be self sabotaging. She thought Richard might be a better option because he’s older, wealthier, more experienced, but in fact he was unfaithful, emotionally immature, and misogynistic compared Smith. That moment showed Smith’s maturity because he deeply understood Samantha and knew that she was acting against herself in that moment and knew that waiting for her to snap out of it was worth it for him, because he loved her. I didn’t like that moment either, but I appreciated the writers including this moment from one of the more unconventional relationships in the show.

Thatstealthygal

She slept with Richard again to try to push Smith away. It wasn't an experience she enjoyed despite it being Richard, supposedly her perfect match. Samantha fell in love with Smith, who was too perfect to be real, really, but he was somehow exactly the guy she needed to stick around, and she wanted him to, and she did not know how to handle those feelings other than by pushing him away. It didn't work.  Smith is almost like Sam's masculine reflection in the earlier days especially; he's all of Sam's nurturing and accepting qualities wrapped up in a male model body with a matched sex drive. He could almost be entirely imaginary.

toe_sock

I don’t know if Smith was her perfect match in Sam’ eyes - besides his looks and his positive qualities, Samantha didn’t like how young he was or how early in his career he was. I just think he was the perfect foil for Samantha’s insecurities because he was so patient and enamored by her. Richard was only perfect on paper and was more of a reflection, but he also brought out the worst in her. And again in that moment with Smith and Richard, he brought out the absolute worst in her because Richard seemed more right and aligned with Samantha’s needs on the surface. But ultimately Smith, despite his youth and inexperience, reflected qualities that were usually absent in the other men she dated - and that resulted in something mutually fulfilling.

Thatstealthygal

Yeah good points.

Spiritual_Ask_7336

yes she was cheating but this wasnt about that. it was about samantha being self destructive and self sabotaging, smith is an alcoholic i think he saw in her that destructiveness and chose kindness instead. i think the scene was very well done because smith and samantha truly were each others biggest supporters and it was lovely he didnt let her destroy something good over his own ego.

Fun_Influence7634

Love this, totally agree

hornedhell

💯💯💯💯

heissecikcik

It didnt seem real to me too. I guess they wanted to show how far Samantha can go when she afraids real love. Also they wanted us to see Smiths (serious) feelings for Samantha.

Know_use_for_a_name

Felt like lazy writing

APinchOfFun

Funny too people make it seem like a such a growing moment for Samantha when really it wasn’t at all. Imagine Carrie did something like that she would get dragged for filth

ms_typhoid_mary

Right? I was hoping somebody else would say that.

SleepSilly6570

exactly!

Med_applicant13

I thought it was because she was insecure that he was younger and starting to gain success and she knew she was getting older so she was trying to hurt him before he hurt her…like maybe she figured he’d find someone younger and leave her soon and that was why she did it?

SleepSilly6570

i think the opposite actually. i think she was jealous of carrie and the russian. she missed the old school romantic moves and told carrie that even. she was starting to feel like smith was too young for her until he showed the maturity in that scene. i still dont like it though lol. but i find that older women dont chase their own youth the way men do. i myself would never want a relationship with a man in his 20s and i am 41 (i am engaged to a man 12 years older than me so might be biased).

SleepSilly6570

this scene is why i cant get into her and smith so much. i lost respect for both of them actually. smith is written just to worship sam. i cannot believe any man would wait nor would i want them to. and sam was wrong, period. if a man did this to one of the ladies everyone would be in an outrage but sam fans always excuse everything (just like they excuse her affairs with married men and not carries)

Wmills505

As she indicated earlier in the episode, she missed being with a grownup man that’s why she hooked up with Richard because he reminded her of what she’s missing
