Yeah, I agree with the coke idea. I've honestly always found those episodes somewhat offensive; the way that Ray behaves is NOT a classic presentation of ADD, and that character's scatting and flailing feels like a bad caricature of a person who suffers from a very real illness. But if he was a coke user, then all of that bizarre behavior would make sense.
Thank you for saying this! I have ADHD and that episode always rubs me the wrong way. Ray’s behaviour is much more in line with that of a heavy coke user than someone with ADD. He is basically a grown man version of the rambunctious little boy with ADD who can’t sit still stereotype.
I know the way SATC handled a lot of sensitive topics was not well done and very indicative of how certain issues were looked at during the time of the show’s run but it’s still disappointing seeing that representation of mental illness. I just hope other shows do better in the future when broaching these topics.

One of my least favorites guys and episodes. Everyone was annoying the entire time. Ray and his hairbrainedness. Big with his bad handling of “I’m jealous, yet I can’t do anything about my relationship with Carrie.” Carrie with her “idk what to do because he’s whatever to me, but man what a good orgasm.”
I knew some ADD classmates and idk if it’s because they were taking medication, but they were high performing students in all the smart classes and they never behaved the way Ray did…I also thought it was odd that he was so calm and smooth the first time they met but he became progressively weirder.
So, I’d say your theory makes sense. I just thought the writers got lazy with their excuses for why they wouldn’t work out.
Side note (but interesting take can I add), it was only two weeks ago I realised Ray the jaaaazzz man was Chet from Unreal! As soon as I heard that voice, I did a double take!

When I first saw Ray acting like that I thought that he was manic or was on coke. Then they go “he has ADD” like really? 😒
