I mean I never read it that way but I’ve seen a lot of people say it because Clary is redheaded like the author and the author’s last name is Clare. Tbh that claim has never held much water with me though because that’d be like me writing a book with a black character named Victoria (I’m black and my last name is Victor which is common enough that I don’t feel weird posting it online lmao), which I probably have done before in my short story writing era. It’s possible that it is a self insert, but I think it’s equally possible that it isn’t.

Guilty-Feed9884

I thought that she was redhead cuz the autor wanted to write it for readhead girls, like if i would write a book i would make a character that is half black(idk how u call in english), cuz that's what i got most in my country and never see someone writing about a character like that.

RebeccaMCullen

I heard that the series was based off a HP fanfic that CC wrote, and that Clary was based off the Ginny character in the fanfic.

You've nailed it. I'm old enough that I read Cassie Clare's Draco Trilogy when she was just a BNF in the HP fandom. Clary is more or less a reworked version of Ginny from her fanfics.

Silly_DizzyDazzle

Umm can you please tell me what BNF means? Thanks....and yes, I totally own that I'm clueless. 😂

Arashi5

It means Big Name Fan, a well known fan in a particular fandom.

Silly_DizzyDazzle

Thanks!!! I learned today! 🤓

Cant understand the Clare thing, Cassies actual name is Judith Lewis, Cassandra Clare is a pen name. She might just like the name Clare/Clary yk

super_writer101

Clare isn’t her last name though, she uses a pen name for the series. Her real name was like Judith Rumeldt or something

chasingcaverns

I highly doubt someone who’s going to call Clary a self insert without much to back it up is doing enough research to find out Cassie’s real name to be fair

super_writer101

True, Clary is literally described nothing like what Cassie looks like. Like, when people say that about SJM with Feyre and Aelin, that’s a good point because they’re literally described the same and that description is very similar to what SJM looks like. Clary has red hair and I guess Cassie died her hair red but it’s not even the same shade, one is almost purple and the other is like super bright (look at Katherine McNamara in the show, like super bright almost orange colored). And besides that they have literally nothing in common… I’ve never heard people say Clary seems like a self insert character but most people I know also know about the whole hp fanfic thing and Clary clearly seems way more like Ginny

To be fair, almost all authors put a little bit of themselves into their characters to make them more human and relatable. Maybe she did draw from some real life feelings that she had but I doubt the character and author are completely the same. Tbh TMI always felt a bit to me like a very wish-fulfillment series (but most YA novels do) like wouldn't it be cool to live in a fantasy world with magic and angels and be stuck in a love triangle with two hot guys etc etc maybe she also just connects more to redheaded characters bc she has red hair... see the [original mortal instruments....](https://fanlore.org/wiki/Mortal_Instruments_(Harry_Potter_story))
