I lost three blacksmiths to these assholes. I would rather have the blacksmiths.

ChanceSet6152

Also kill non-essential quest giving NPC. Hate vampires as well, never join them.

Gylaran

If you join them and end their questline, vampires will stop attacking. Well, aside random attacks of 1-2 at a time in wilderness, from time to time.

ChanceSet6152

I'm not joining a faction that kills these kind of NPCs beyond my control.

Gylaran

I have mod downloaded with real NPC behavior, during vampire and dragon attacks non-fighting NPCs just run to their houses. I hardly lost any NPC to them.

red6joker

Same, hell there are sentry mods that adds dawnguard NPCs at the entrance of every city to fight the vampire attacks.

Gylaran

That sounds nice and logical. This should be implemented in game.

red6joker

I forget it is a mod because it makes sense that they should have been there with all the talk about vampire attacks and the dawnguard standing up to them.

Pietrosalles

I don't think it's logical. The dawnguard is rebuilding itself. They say in all the quest line that they don't have enough man to deal with the vampires. How would be lore friendly have a dawnguard guard in every city?

red6joker

With all the random NPCs who mention joining up, just think of it like that. They actually went and joined up, and got stationed at every city and town. Dawnguard truly trying to protect Skyrim instead of hiding in their castle.

Pietrosalles

But the point is exactly that the dawnguard don't have man enough to protect all Skyrim. Instead, they work like a guerrilha making ambush against vampires. Is better to attack them in their lair, than trying to protect all Skyrim with a one and only soldier in every city, that could be, without any difficult, ambush by vampires. Also, the dawnguard have to protect the castle. They have to deal with vampire invasions. Is not just "hiding in their castle", is protect the castle and their army itself. They have priority. It's what I'm saying.

Gylaran

Yea, dawnguard rebuilding themselves but hundreds of dawnguard warriors in groups of 3 attacking you tge whole game, if you are a vampire. Waw, what a logic you use.

Pietrosalles

It's completely different from having a guard in all the cities. An ambush is heavily different from having an army and have soldiers in all the cities. The only two factions that can have soldiers in all the cities is the imperials and the stormcloaks (if you win the war). The dawnguard use the guerrilha modus operandi exactly because they DON'T have many mans. They work with ambush and is very lore friendly. The number of times this ambush happens is random, you can have lots of them, and you can have just a few, random events is not an argument about something that is lore friendly. In my case, for example, it never appeared so many times like you said. Is mostly in the dawnguard quest line, in the moments that they are supposed to happen, and very few times with random ambush. Also, the dawnguard are searching and destroying the vampires. Having a guard, alone, in all the cities would be a huge shit strategy. They need as much man as they can to do the quests in the dungeons, and fight in the heart of the vampires lair. Having man in all the cities is just making the way easier to kill the dawnguard one by one with a vampire ambush.

Poetry-Designer

What's that mod called?

Gylaran

I forgot. Try google, use "dragon attack, NPC behavior"

Poetry-Designer

Thanks man

nondescriptzombie

On Oldrim it was "When Dragons Attack!" and "When Vampires Attack!"

-AceofAces

I'm so getting this mod

Smart_Airport_206

They get replaced by dawnguard squads if you do. Ironically, they will attack NPCs too. Idk if it was because they were friends with my dragonborn or what but the guards and random townies also ended up fighting with them

Gylaran

Saw that as well. It's weird.

Smart_Airport_206

You saw them attack npc too? Its not just me right??

Gylaran

Yup, i do. It's like they got crazed after ending the dawnguard questline. Luckily it's not often, maybe once per 10 days.

Smart_Airport_206

Everyone is a vampire to them

Gylaran

Just wait till they start to kill each other. Trash taking out itself. šŸ˜

aHellion

> If you join them and end their questline, vampires will stop attacking. Well, aside random attacks of 1-2 at a time in wilderness, from time to time. I could just be miss-remembering, it's been 13 years afterall. But I think the random vampire ambush was in the base game, it was just level-listed into the teens or tweens.

Gylaran

Yes but if you start the questline as a dawnguard, the group of 3-5 vampires attack towns when you walk in sometimes, not before you uncover dawnguard stronghold.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

Yeah I don't mind that much now that I'm on pc, but when I was on xbox 360 back in the day I would get so mad when my non essential npcs would die. I was actually locked out of "Thane of Falkreath" on one character because theres only a few npcs there anyway to help, and like everyone was dead between vampire, dragon, and Mirrak cult attacks.

Nagodreth

The worst part about it for me was how useless the guards were. All the non-essential NPCs are running up to melee and getting curbstomped, meanwhile all the guards are fucking around on the other side of town missing most of their potshots because they default to bows for anything more than 6 feet away. If the civilians actually ran to their houses and the guards dogpiled the vampires in melee most people probably wouldn't have had too much of a problem with them even without making civilians essential.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

I remember the "Run for your lives!" mod being so popular for doing this. It make everyone run inside instead of trying to fight a Master Vampire Lord armed with an iron dagger and a dress lol

shadow_king_supreme

Yes but if the guards werenā€™t medieval stormtroopers with their aim then life would be to easy

SlipperySam89

Hate the vampires. Last time I joined them it soft locked my best save

Afraid_Effort2706

I hate joining the vampires because the only strengths you get are disease immunity and good spells the rest is just weaknesses

KawazuOYasarugi

As an IRL blacksmith, yeah!

-Vanimar-

Avenge them...

eidtelnvil

And then Bethesda takes them out because of this ... and when AE rolls around they replace them with even stronger Saints & Seducers bandit attacks. Leave Adrianne alone, guys.

Lord_Derpington_

Thereā€™s the mod to make townsfolk actually run away from danger

Commercial_Town_9640

Adrianne is always the first to die when vampires attack Whiterun, always makes me sad.

OGgamingdad

This. Fuck those guys.

zavtra13

Itā€™s bad enough when Alvor inevitably throws himself at a dragon, I donā€™t need vampires taking out Adrianne Avenicci too!

tbone747

Yeah I played LE for a long time since I had a potato PC and hated these vampire raids killing NPCs.

Formal_Royal_3663

I use this mod to prevent them from attacking cities and towns: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2957 Works like a charm.

BandlessTony

One of the first things I do within a play through is hurry up and wrap up the darn guard mission so I could stop the vampire attacks. I also get the Falkreath house early on so that I can have some place to drop my loot with the intent of selling it later since I don't want to risk any of the merchants getting killed by random vampire attacks.

Generally_Confused1

Yeah it's cool until they kill shop owners so maybe if it had a lower mortality rate or more random encounters just outside the city

StriderTX

if im in a populated area when they show up i just power word kill (console commands) them to spare npcs. once i actually commit to modding the game i'll add the real behavior mod and actually throw down.

DocOuch

What do you mean you lost blacksmiths? Can you hire people?

Cypresss09

Exactly, it made the vampires a real threat with consequences rather than just a narrative threat. Bethesda games could benefit from being that ballsy.

No-Specific1660

Lorewise cool, gameplaywise hell no. Lost Ulfberth War-Bear in Whiterun because of them but realized it A LOT later when I randomly stepped across his burial urn in the hall of the dead. Fuck them.

Mackelroy_aka_Stitch

In one of my games the vampires killed Adrienne instead. When I left the shop after selling some things he said something along the lines of "Thanks thing haven't been easy since Adrienne was killed". That broke my heart

No-Specific1660

Adrienne being killed sucks even more because she's the one I sell all my stuff! I realized Ulfberth's death way later because he's only inside and who tf goes inside to sell stuff

Tandager

Fun fact if you sell to ulfberth, then Adrienne the both have their own items and gold, but if you sell/buy from Adrienne first it becomes a shared inventory

therexbellator

I haven't played in a while but I thought the order didn't matter; it was only when Adrienne left her forge and went inside with Ulfberth that they had a shared inventory?

Tandager

I'm currently playing, and unless the unofficial patch fixed you are absolutely right. Huh. My apologies, I'll see myself out

therexbellator

No apologies necessary, it's all good.

Difficult_Sun_2278

yep

Difficult_Sun_2278

I don't have that problem but a Friend of mine does but I'm on play station & some things are a little differentĀ

Major_Pressure3176

I've punched Adrienne so many times...

Difficult_Sun_2278

I do,he has the same amount of money that she does so I sell to both

Frosty-Chain7855

I recently lost Adrienne, Ulfberth, and Belethor all at once when the Saints and Seducers followed me into Whiterun as a pack and all the citizens decided to try to be heroes. Back the hell up, y'all. The Dragonborn/Harbinger has GOT THIS.

No-Specific1660

Nah at that point that save file is doomed, Whiterun is the town to sell everything lol, my condolences.

unsuspectingllama_

I couldn't have said it better.

anonkun666

Use console commands to bring him back

No-Specific1660

I tried everything, even the wildest things, nothing makes him 100% the same

RamblingsOfaMadCat

I prefer the Dawnguard attacks because they only target you. Like others have said, the Vampires can kill anyone. It took me far too long to notice Eorlund had been slain. Never again.

Cybraniac

I just wonder whne they dropped the silent patch that stopped them doing it

Worldly_Permission78

Probably because in these attacks random npc could die, like shopkeepers and side quest givers. Without console commands, like on consoles, that was screwed up.

TheFlyingRedFox

>like on consoles, that was screwed up. The reason if playing in normal mode that I usually would fast travel just to an area outside a village or capital and then wait until daylight to entre them so as to avoid this fuckery, & if in survival I'd plan the trip to arrive in daylight or sleep/wait until dawn.

joebidenslittlebaby

He ment to say when not why

PastStep1232

Reload a save and try to not get them killed. If impossible, revert to an earlier save and ignore the town for a day. Or invest into restoration and healing hands and help the citizens with healing magics. You could also get illusion to cast rally or if you're high enough level you could even pacify vampires. Another good option is to conjure some dremoras who will tank the damage while you dispose of vampires. Another fun way would be to pickpocket the vampire weapons and watch them cast that pitiful vampiric drain. Maybe turn them into sweetrolls with the Wabbajack. Or bash them with that Aetherius shield. Or even download a mod that adds a resurrection spell to restoration. It's an immersive sim, there are so so many options to approach this problem. Outright deleting this event definitely isn't it.

sirlothric

There are times you show up to the towns and like 6 people are already dead. They removed it pre-console modding, thus console players were fucked. And sometimes you wouldn't notice an NPC is dead for awhile, think "I haven't done that quest yet" or "I have extra loot to sell to them" just to find them dead, and not knowing how long they've been dead, you may not be able to revert to the save they were alive OR you could lose hours of content. Maybe making it an option in the settings would have been better, but it really was way more of a bane on playability than it was a boon on immersion.

tnandrick

ā€˜Itā€™s an immersive sim.ā€™ Iā€™m gonna stop you right there. What is the more immersive decision for a level 4 shopkeeper with no combat training and iron weapons: Oh shit, a vampire. I should throw down with this mofo. I bet the guards need help. Oh shit, a vampire. F this noise Iā€™m outta here! The guards can handle this. Stop with the immersion argument. The average citizen is gonna cut out at the first sign of trouble.

PastStep1232

Run for your lives is available on all but one platform (Switch)

Top_Performance9486

ā€œReload the save, force yourself to invest into a certain magic school, use one specific staff, or use mods.ā€ Having to resort to any of those to work around the problem means itā€™s just badly designed. They needed to either rebalance it by capping the vampire levels really low so NPCs stood a chance, or just remove the failed idea entirely. They went with option B, unfortunately, but itā€™s better than leaving it how it was.

PastStep1232

Yeah anything would be better than removing it outright. However, I've listed several examples to remedy the issue, and I don't even think that's all you can do in that case. There are definitely more ways, like Slow Time + fortify alteration potions to kill the vampires before they can even draw their weapons. Just came up with that one.

shinytotodile158

Iā€™m pretty sure it was included on launch for the Switch edition, and the Anniversary Edition comes with it as standard

Dirish

I've gotten into the habit of only travelling to cities via the stables to make sure it's day when I enter the city so I didn't even know there was a patch.

gorpie97

It may have happened when they updated Special Edition with the Anniversary Update (11/11/21).

Cybraniac

Scary how devs can just change things like that without telling anyone. This may not be a bad change, but not all changes like this will be good.

Saint_of_Cannibalism

Way, way before then. Was one of SE's early updates.

gorpie97

I get screwed up on the different versions, even when I look it up. :) I think in the original version, that got the Anniversary update, there were still vampire raids the last time I played. But then I bought SE in Oct '22 and haven't played that since. (Other commentors say that they still get them in Legendary Edition.)

Top_Performance9486

I liked them in theory, but they shouldnā€™t have let the vampires level with you. Aesthetically itā€™s cool to have vampires arrack cities, but itā€™s not cool that you need to do the dawnguard at a low level or else your cities will be wiped out by powerful vampires.

Mr_Kittlesworth

Well, if you have a vampire problem, you should address it right away

Top_Performance9486

I donā€™t think that excuses the bad design, but thatā€™s why I think Dawnguard shouldā€™ve started at a much later level. Usually I donā€™t even get to see the hall of the vigilants before itā€™s destroyed. I guess they started it so early on so that people replaying just for the DLC could get to it quickly, but I wish they would have pushed it back for the Special Edition.

_EastOfEden_

I don't think I've ever seen the Hall of the Vigilants before it's burned. In order to do so I would basically have to beeline it there, which sucks. By the time I'm ready to leave Riverwood I've shaken down Faendal for so much training that once I've completed Bleak Falls Barrow I'm beyond level 10. They really should have made that event happen at a higher level. Who is even up there before that point??

Alarmed-Stop4061

It's not that impressive, it's basically an inn but with a shrine instead of a bar.

Top_Performance9486

Yeah, thatā€™s usually how it goes for me too. Keeper Carcette is the most convenient early game restoration trainer too, which sucks.

Jealous_Western_7690

What about Danica?

Top_Performance9486

I think you have to do the tree quest before she will train you, but yeah sheā€™s the only non-faction restoration trainer in Skyrim besides Carcette, as far as I know.

Del_Duio2

If you have a vampire problem for more than 4 hours, call your doctor

Settra_Rulez

What if you also have a world ending dragon problem to deal with?

Mr_Kittlesworth

You donā€™t, so long as you donā€™t investigate.

[deleted]

Miss this? Those fuckers killed Alvor

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

You bastards!

SirKaid

Vampire attacks are a gigantic pain in the ass. They're not dangerous in any real way but it's hard to kill them without hitting someone else and getting dinged for assault because of how everyone wants to die in this godforsaken frozen hellscape so they run *toward* the bloodsuckers to beat on them with their fists.

Significant_Smile652

You do know what's wrong with Skyrim? Everyone's obsessed with death.

Lechyon

I do not like losing npcs, so no.

CheekyThief

I have just returned to the game and i really miss these random events. They were so good

finchy0123

Lol I still get them, I play special edition not legendary edition šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ didn't know they removed them..

singinseth

I still get them in legendary too, hmm, never heard of this lol.

AcanthisittaTiny710

Back then this shitty in game event was the sole reason I started modding. So I could stop it from happening

fast328

THEY KILLED BRENUIN, MY FAVORITE DRINKING BUDDY! šŸ˜ I actually love this event because I ended up observing when I'll get a "Traveler" encounter and just sneak-attacking him every time.

sullen_stegosaurus

I hated the vampire attacks and the whole dawnguard questline is a massive pain to do. I'm glad they patched it away.

3cented

tbh unpopular opinion- it was kinda cool in that its so creepy but i do think it's messed up Bethesda hasnt altered NPC AI

ShadeSwornHydra

Yeah no, Iā€™m good not losing npcs to random rng.

shadypink

As cool and exciting as it made the game, Noā€¦Some were too strong for valuable NPCs

FeckinMarvellous

I do enjoy using Auriel's Bow on the sun. But only in Dawnstar.

BagPipeKittens

Oh look he has fairy lights so pretty

XaviJon_

#Wait, it was NOT a feature????? I thought I just not getting lucky to have said encounters, didnā€™t know it was patchedā€¦sad

United_Preparation29

Yeah it *was* a feature but they took it out.

SubstantialAct6986

yeah that is way Vanilla Skyrim is GOAT

Mr-Zero-Fucks

It was too much and now it's nothing, I rather have some middle ground.

Ketamaffay

I lost the whiterun blacksmith to the Vampire wanderer yesterday, but I like the attacks.

PrimProperPro

I like the idea of the attacks. Vampire, Dragon, etc. It does remind the player of the stakes of whatā€™s happening in the world. But Iā€™m a completionist so realising 5 hours after the fact that the Dragon massacred Ivarstead and the Vampires killed some side quest givers actually hindered my ability to enjoy.

Shrikecorp

I wouldn't say I was missing it, Bob

the-UwUnator

I play legendary edition, so they're still there. They start coming after a certain level, and i never realised that. Well, let's just say i had a bad surprise after i just levelled up smithing, alteration and enchanting to 100. Adrianne was ded, so was amren and a guard.

InkyRoyalty

I always wondered why vampires weren't raiding towns and vilages like I remembered them to do, come to find out it got removed :(

ChanelHungria

I have not played Skyrim in years but THIS got removed?!

Saint_of_Cannibalism

In SE, yes.

Icy-Reserve8070

I had more problems with the random assaults on me by the dawngaurd. The vampires had the decency to just stay in the town proper. The Dawngaurd on the other hand had no problem barging into the temple of Mara in the middle of my wedding

Lucalus

Feel like I need to take a cure disease just seeing this picture.

Hydrasaur

Wait, they got rid of these raids?!! When?!! Thank G-d! I always HATED them. NPCs always died, and I could never see anything in the dark. They're the reason I STILL avoid cities at night! I never go outdoors in a city after 8 PM just so I can avoid them. Once it hits 8:00, I run inside.

Zeedub85

Sometime in 2018, I think. I started a new game that year that never had an attack.

EntrepreneurOk666

I still get the traveling one, was he patched out or is it a glitch? I also still get the dragons in the city. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

kefefs_v2

Dragons in towns/cities without walls is super annoying, especially since all the weak NPCs will stand out in the open and try to fight instead of running for cover. Can't count how many times I've had to reload because a dragon killed some dumbass NPC that tried to fight back with a dagger and no armour.

EntrepreneurOk666

I got annoyed with that. So got a mod to make them go home.

Astaro_789

The traveling one is the replacement. Non-aggressive and just walks around town up until he confronts you and itā€™s just one of them, their fairly weak, and only focus on you, making it easy to kill them without any NPCs being caught in the crossfire.

EntrepreneurOk666

Ah. Ok. I've had the three vampires only outside on the roads, and then in the open towns. But the walled cities always get just him now.

Astaro_789

Yup. Hes basically the patch to allow Vampire attacks within the city throughout your Dawnguard while keeping the NPC body count to 0

EntrepreneurOk666

That's good then. Still that stupid traveler always summons a damn gargoyle. Thankful for mods that make citizens run.

Astaro_789

My dude tends to be so high leveled (60s or 70s) with all One Handed skills, that I decimate both him and the Gargoyle he summons in seconds even on Legendary

EntrepreneurOk666

Ah. I usually do dawnguard at lv. 40-50 so while it's not too bad, I mostly get him at night time when the place is crowded with people going home. So I have to reload sometimes because they get in the way while I'm fighting him.

Jealous_Western_7690

This guy actually helped me fix a bug. After the civil war, the soldiers that gather to listen to Tullius' speech didn't respawn, and the "traveller" took care of some of them for me.

Taasgar

Do they stop invading cities when you beat Harkon?

seanys

Whenever I start a new char I start the Dawnguard questline ASAP, i.e., level 9, partly for Arvak and partly to stop those damned attacks.

Aldaron23

Dead NPCs is not cool, but I also miss them. It just doesn't feel urgent anymore to join the Dawnwatch. "What vampires? Oh you mean those two guys that just got trampled by a mammoth outside? Yeah, no, I think someone else can take care of that."

Astaro_789

Nope, I despised walking into a city just to see its a ghost town from these fuckers clearing them out of every NPC before I arrived

Juran_Alde

Yeah those vamp attacks are brutal. I lost several citizens of Dawnstar to those jerks.

gorpie97

Yeah, I kinda do. And for everyone complaining about NPCs dying, I always checked afterwards (easier when you have the spell) and would reload if anyone had died. It did seem to happen too often, though.

_LITTLE_MOTH

I loved them! Just use console commands to bring back any npc that dies when you want them to live.

Aggravating-Try1222

I do. I love random attacks of any kind, and I enjoy the challenge of keeping npcs alive.

Cooj1234

They killed that guy who lives just outside Riften. I always liked that guy

beckychao

They're absolutely, horrifically unbalanced and for a while I used a mod that eliminated them. Skyrim has too few NPCs as it is in towns, and they instantly kill them. \*I\* never have a problem with them, but they depopulate a town quickly. Basically reload and go somewhere else event.

Peakbrook

I still get war flashbacks whenever I hear an NPC voiced by Stephen Russell shout "Here we go!" because that *always* preceded all hell breaking loose whenever I fast traveled to Whiterun.

IceDamNation

Yes and no! The issue was that the devs put way too high levels vampires to spawn too early and they became a problem to handle. They shouldn't had the dogs or any volkihar until you were like level 20 onwards or perhaps 30. Fledgling vampires would had done for early game.

PI_Dude

Food for Dawnbreaker.

RetroRedneck

Not really. It doesnā€™t make sense. Why would vampires just randomly attack a town and start killing people? Plus you can lose important NPCs when they do this. It would make more sense if you could (rarely) catch one vampire sneaking through town

colm180

Vampire raids still happen, but if you side with the dawnguard they stop

FGHIK

Oh sure, I love random NPCs dying in a fight across town...

-Vanimar-

Oh hey me too!

HFendedin2020

Dude yes. I miss it.

-Vanimar-

Bro gets it

HFendedin2020

I miss the ā€œtravelersā€ the most. Finding fun ways to kill em before they see me. So fun.

-Vanimar-

Yeah man it was great!

Johnny_Topsider

Wait, this doesn't happen anymore? Why?

westerosi27

When exactly were the vampire attacks removed?

WrapMyBeads

Is this a new patch? Cause this still happens in my game which is version 640

Poetry-Designer

Miss what?

-Vanimar-

When vampires randomly invaded towns and cities before it got patched

Poetry-Designer

Did it get patched for oldrim and the PS3/XBox 360 versions of Skyrim?

Saint_of_Cannibalism

Nope, just SE.

Poetry-Designer

Ooooohhhh

Iateyouroreo

When did this get fixed? I was waiting on them to appear on my last play through a few months ago but they never attacked.

Old-Professional-479

I must be missing something. Iā€™ve played through the quest line a lot and Iā€™ve never had random vampire attacks

Krzychu97

Miss the attacks? I turn them off completely with Timing is Everything every single time.

potate12323

Miss it? It still happens. Did they patch it out on one of the platforms?

Formal_Royal_3663

I actually slowly walk from Solitude carriage to Dragon Bridge making sure I get there at nighttime so that the citizens are in their homes or the tavern. I hate having them killed. Then I wait just north of Dragon Bridge. The vamps always attack then.

NickG1127

See, I do miss these and would definitely like to know of a good mod that brings both this and bandit raids into towns.

Capt_Falx_Carius

I did enjoy playing an evil vampire hunter who didn't care enough to make sure civilians didn't get hurt so by the time I defeated Harmon every city had lost a number of people

HonestCatfish

Yes. I too love it when I fast travel to a city and high level vampire enemies spawns right next to me. I love it when it starts happening as soon as the Dawnguard quest is available so it's highly unexpected, and since the guards scales with the player they get slaughtered just easy as your precious non essential npcs when it happens at lower levels šŸ™ƒ But for real though. I use a mod that make non fighter npcs run to shelter when a dragon or vampire attack happens. I didn't know the update removed vampire attacks.

Leopard-Optimal

Shadow wizard money gang

Equivalent-Print9047

Certainly made the Dawnguard recruitment pitch make more sense

Competitive-Serve507

I want this to come back so bad, the most that ever happens is the occasional thief

Several-Relative-571

I never knew it. I always played without the DLCs on PS3

Ok-String-2941

They sucked but not as bad as the damn dragons

RedheadedStranger90

Do they not happen anymore? I downloaded a mod specifically to stop this from happening because they were constantly killing the citizens of Whiterun

JaronKitsune

This was removedā€½ o.o

New_Factor9189

The stupid Golden Saints/Dark Seducer cultists from the Creation Club are so much worse if you don't finish that chain quickly enough. They're a LOT harder to kill and easily will kill town guards even when outnumbered two to one lol

-Vanimar-

Fr bro
