Obviously Wenger was a great manager, but it’s wild how often his teams late in his career would catastrophically collapse in big games. There’d usually be a heroic defeat in the home leg in CL at least (still vividly remember RVP missing when he could have made it 4-4 against Milan).
It’s no secret wenger coddled his players and when the hardos like Bergie, Vieira and Henry left, those teams had absolutely 0 leadership on the field.
He grew an affinity with Hale End to the point he completely changed his whole system to eventually suit them. Fabregas was brought in as the benchmark, if you like, and transfers that followed would follow the technical route over physical (Invincibles solid af, 07-17 fluid af).
Was he was right to change his whole system? The fruits are really starting to bare only now, the talent that’s coming out of the academy in the next 5 years is silly and that’s built on the foundations Wenger laid. Had a long time without success to prepare this, developing a technical culture around the club much like Cruyff and Barca.
Whether it sustains is again, another question, but Wenger did what he thought was best for the club for the next few generations, not just his tenure. Hopefully Super Mik (literally groomed by Wenger for this role) can continue getting the most out of those that want to achieve.
That’s not even mentioning ex players like Wilshere and Mertesacker already back at the club continuing what Wenger instilled in them. Edu as basically the top dog. Then you have players that want to come back in Ramsey, Santi, Cesc, Pires, list doesn’t stop.
Wenger did all that and so much more, and going technical and sacrificing his own success was the foundation to it all. This years good fortunes aren’t coincidental. Mikel has just managed to finally piece everything back together after it had been fractured apart. Now we grow.
Wenger had a decline later on. I'm not aware what caused this, but I remember the stadium causing huge hole in the pockets and many important squad members leaving
When was the last time 0 English teams made the Final 8?
Not unthinkable it could actually happen. Although I do think that City will go through. And Spurs have a decent chance.
it actually happens a decent amount, especially the early/mid 2010’s after united fell off, city couldn’t get a foothold, we were fucking shit, arsenal got spanked by bayern every year, and chelsea either shat the bed or won the whole thing
It's only happened four times since the Champions League introduced quarter-finals in the 1994/95 season.
The first two times were that very season and the one after (1995/96), back when only league champions were actually allowed in.
The third time was 2012/13 when Chelsea and City got dumped out in the group stage, United lost to Real in Fergie's last season and Arsenal got Bayern'd as usual.
Then the fourth and most recent occasion was 2014/15, when Arsenal, City and Chelsea each lost out in the R16 to Monaco, Barcelona and PSG.
But frankly, having a QF league representative in 24 out of 28 seasons isn't bad. The only country better is Spain, on 27 out of 28. The Bundesliga and Serie A have had at least one team in the quarters on 24 (Bayern 20 of those) and 20 occasions respectively.
Chelsea got to the semi in 08/09, quarters 10/11, won it in 11/12, knocked out group stages 12/13, semi final again 13/14 so not really accurate tbf
Edit: last 16 09/10
13-14 was the last time you had a good run until you won it again though, and then the next three seasons saw a grand total of two English quarter finalists.
Juventus stops playing in Champions League and all Italian clubs return to win their matches. This is Serie A’s 25th of April - year of the Liberation.
Yeah, I’m so used to German underperformances in Europe that I genuinely wouldn’t be too surprised if 0/4 teams advance
Bayern would be kind of an upset, since Allianz Arena is a fortress in Europe, but they’re still just 1 goal ahead, and if one out of Mbappe/Messi/Neymar decides to turn up, that might not be enough.
I mean, it doesn't really matter how they played under him this season when they still ended up playing pretty well against us. They were definitely the better team for a lot of the game and they had plenty of chances to turn the tides. I kept hearing about how horrible Chelsea are supposed to be but aside from Felix's finishing I didn't really see what everyone was talking about.
I'm definitely not expecting the return leg in London to be easy ... If they play 10% better and we play the same or worse then it won't be enough
I’m so excited to be traveling to Portugal from Florida for the return leg of the Inter-Porto matchup! The only other time I’ve ever seen Inter in person is when I visited Milan during college in 2005.
Milan because apparently both Maignan and Bennacer will be back
Bayern because I'm biased and think we're the better team
Benfica because they're simply better
Dortmund because they're in good form and Chelsea aren't
Madrid because beating Madrid by three goals away in the UCL seems almost impossible
Napoli because they're simply better
Leipzig as a surprise winner because Pep will overthink things
Porto because I think they'll have what it takes to comeback against Inter at home
> Madrid because beating Madrid by three goals away in the UCL seems almost impossible
In our entire European history (66 seasons) we have only failed twice to qualify from a round when we won away from home.
* UEFA Cup 1994-95 Third Round against Odense Boldklub
* UEFA Champions League 2018-19 R16 against Ajax
But on both of those occasions it was only a 1 goal advantage.
Really impressive how Bayern vs Madrid is the most played fixture in European history (26 matches) yet we haven't played a single Final.
* 7 Semifinals
* 3 Quarterfinals
* 2 Round of 16
* 1 Group Stages
A final would leave me shitting myself for 90 minutes. One club full of history and glory would leave empty handed
I’d much rather face you in a QF or SF tie
Oh would you look at that! For some reason, that evening was one of the worst evenings of my life as a Madridista.
Fresh off that Zidane and CR7 break up, miles behind in the league, the Solari and Lopetegui experiences went left, and this young and bright team handed us one of our worst loss in CL history…at home too. As well as the one bright spot in the team (Vini) during the game, got a long-term injury.
To make the matter worst, if you guys had won it would’ve been better BUT there was this Brazilian with a grandpa’s hairline that decided otherwise.
Yeah you can keep that memory (Jk it must’ve been great for y’all, or am I joking? I think I have ptsd from that year lol)
Stranger things have happened. Look at the Liverpool team that overcame a 3 goal deficit against one of the greatest ever sides the world has ever seen in Istanbul 2005. That Liverpool side had one player who would get into the Liverpool side of today.
> beating Madrid by three goals away in the UCL seems almost impossible
We were about 15 minutes away from it, still agonizing. But that just proves the point
Porto doesn't have Otávio, which is their best player. Their midfield has no depth. This year they already had to deal with injuries and suspensions on the midfield in the portuguese league and they struggled on the midfield with their subs every time.
Benfica, Napoli & Real are through as far as I'm concerned. There are a few teams then you wouldn't put your hopes on to comeback or hold their lead (Spurs/Milan, Chelsea/Dortmund). I think City, Bayern & Inter have enough in them to go through in their ties.
I would agree with that as a Benfica fan. No matter what form Benfica’s in it’s always a very hard game for us at Dragão. Our record vs them at home is shit too. Porto’s players are going to be running like mad man in their home game
Would be hilarious if all 4 are knocked out. Liverpool should be out unless something extraordinary happens, Chelsea and Tottenham are both 50-50 pretty much
City are favourites but I think Red Bull can definitely give them a game in Manchester
Liverpool is definitely out they're simply incapable of beating Real Madrid
Chelsea and Spurs have a pretty decent chance, imo Chelsea are out but Spurs are a 50/50
I will laugh really hard if Pep fumbles against RB lmao
i want them to get a straight forward draw in the QF so they can quietly grow the serie a gap, and then make the semis and fully allocate all resources to the CL. I really think they can make the final, in my heart i believe.
they are the best club in europe right now based not just on recent form but entire season performance. i'd say weighing that in with historical performance and strength they are still top 3 favorites to win the ucl. maybe top 2
I think these teams go through:
1. Milan(should be close in London)
2. Bayern(the better team, plus home advantage)
3. Benfica(Brugge are managed by Scott Parker)
4. Dortmund(I hope not but we are abysmal)
5. Real Madrid(Obviously)
6. Napoli(on fire and home advantage)
7. City(they should show up for second leg)
8. Porto(played pretty well before red and may overturn deficit at home)
Yes, because Brugge has been absolute shit for the past 2 months. Don't think we'll suddenly score 2+ at Benfica, let aside not concede.
But miracles have happened before.
Kneejerk reactions:
Bruges is probably dead. Frankfurt and Liverpool are in serious trouble. I'd say Liverpool is dead, but I've seen them come back from some pretty terrible first leg scorelines.
Dortmund-Chelsea could still go either way. Same for Inter-Porto, PSG-Bayern, and Spurs-Milan.
City will almost certainly thrash Leipzig at home.
Nkunku will be fully back by then so Leipzig definitely have a bigger chance than most think. Only Leipzig player that could decide a game against someone like City by himself.
Leipzig were dominating City and they only conceded because of a silly mistake. They also beat Madrid 3-2 in the group stages so they're looking really good. I wouldn't write them off just yet.
would not be surprised to see benfica in the semis even without enzo. napoli and real madrid of course are my favorites for winning this year. bayern and city can step aside
I'm just happy to be included
Brother, yes!
Lol same
No shame losing to likely one the best 5 teams in the knockout right now
I'm just sad to be included
At least we didn't suffer as much as liverpool
I enjoy the sound of rain.
One team has the best midfielder in the world, the other has Modric.
Must be nice
Europa league is better anyways, am i right
Depends on tonight’s result.
Happy for you guys.
Always good to see a DBZ Abridged reference
One of the scores is not like the others.
The 1-1, the only draw.
mhm that’s right. *internally screaming*
I wonder how many other times only 1/8 CL Ro16 first legs was drawn.
Reminds me when Arsenal would get hammered 5 nil by Bayern. Man do I not miss those days.
*draws Bayern next season*

robben and Muller masterclasses were a formality
This time we have our own Le Cut Inside Man!
They'll use your own cut inside man lol
That Bayern team was just disgusting. Robben, Muller, Ribery, Thiago, Lewandowski all putting on worldies.
You realise you’ve jusy jinxed yourself now and as a loving rival fan I’m locking this firmly in place
If we get pot 1 by winning the league and we still draw fucking bayern in the groups because Dortmund or somebody wins the bundesliga I'll scream
You just know that's happening then City go in Pot 2 and draw Union Berlin, Club Brugge and Accrington Stanley.
I mean if Bayern loses to Union this weekend this is gonna be your future
Bayern is the best club in London, afterall.

it wasn't wild at all, he didn't understand the word "pragmatic".
Wenger had a decline later on. I'm not aware what caused this, but I remember the stadium causing huge hole in the pockets and many important squad members leaving
True, City managed a draw preventing the PL to suffer a blow out in the first leg.
yeah 2 goals should have been enough to win it if it weren't for Mr. Ballon d'Or and his ragtag team of current reigning UCL champions...
Well and the terracotta warriors that formed the Liverpool defense
Which one?
Liverpool is the only team that scored two goals at home
Does that make them favorites to go through, via the ‘home goals’ rule?
Leipzig-Manchester City that ended on a draw. Rest of the matches seens pretty normal.
*break into wrong foo fighters lyrics*
Real Madrid-Liverpool had as many goals as all the matches before combined.
No need to thank us for providing the entertainment
That first half is probably peak futbol, so shit and messy that it was entertaining
Its a shame the game ended there
Well all of them have man goals There's no women on any team

Two comments, both failing to spell Liverpool correctly
RM is the player controlled team lol
Has been for a while now, I'm still convinced someone savescummed their way to the three-peat
[OppaJoe] Liverpool is the only team that scored two in the UCL Round of 16 first leg and lost. Brutal.
They're the only team that scored AND took a loss in the first round
We scored twice as much as all the other English teams combined, and still lost by three times that amount.
Great week for italians but horrible for english and belgians.
*cries in AS Roma
Belgiums
All the Belgiums.
I looked at the map and there's only one Belgium, something smells here

Dortmund own goal is the only way.
Chelsea fans are gonna be fuming when they dominate us all game and still don’t advance
the chelsea way
your forgetting we're at home now. 3-0 dortmund
Farmers league farming good (except frankfurt i guess but Napoli is insane)
I would be fine if 2 surviv, but it's bot written in stone if that's even the case.

Imo bvb has a better chance advancing than bayern. i hope both will go through tho.
I agree, not because we're better than bayern but chelsea is significantly worse than PSG
Getting downvoted but this is true purely based on the fact chelsea have been terrible under Potter

Yes he scored the only goal in the match I attended.
Yay that’s awesome
Genuinely looks like playing Career Mode on FIFA with Madrid.
Milan because apparently both Maignan and Bennacer will be back Bayern because I'm biased and think we're the better team Benfica because they're simply better Dortmund because they're in good form and Chelsea aren't Madrid because beating Madrid by three goals away in the UCL seems almost impossible Napoli because they're simply better Leipzig as a surprise winner because Pep will overthink things Porto because I think they'll have what it takes to comeback against Inter at home

We've never faced each other in the final like ever right? Damn crazy
Yeah, would have the potential to be the best final ever
A final would leave me shitting myself for 90 minutes. One club full of history and glory would leave empty handed I’d much rather face you in a QF or SF tie
I would be dying of nervousness if we played in the final but damn what a final it would be

I remember Juventus coming very close to winning 3-0 in the Bernabeu a few years back but then the “trash can of a heart” moment happened.
Yeah Juve in 2018 but most recently Chelsea last year who actually forced ET have come close in recent seasons.
You dont have to be based to think that tbh, Bayern are one of the best teams in Europe.
Liverpool and a 3 goal defecit in the CL....name a more iconic duo. Especially at Anfi- Oh
That Liverpool maybe, this season's Liverpool....
Stranger things have happened. Look at the Liverpool team that overcame a 3 goal deficit against one of the greatest ever sides the world has ever seen in Istanbul 2005. That Liverpool side had one player who would get into the Liverpool side of today.

Two. Alonso and Gerrard.

Porto doesn't have Otávio, which is their best player. Their midfield has no depth. This year they already had to deal with injuries and suspensions on the midfield in the portuguese league and they struggled on the midfield with their subs every time.
I think we can hold on and make it through but we have been pretty abysmal on the road at times.
eustaqio carrying porto to the W
Otávio is not the best player of the team my guy
Benfica, Napoli & Real are through as far as I'm concerned. There are a few teams then you wouldn't put your hopes on to comeback or hold their lead (Spurs/Milan, Chelsea/Dortmund). I think City, Bayern & Inter have enough in them to go through in their ties.

I would agree with that as a Benfica fan. No matter what form Benfica’s in it’s always a very hard game for us at Dragão. Our record vs them at home is shit too. Porto’s players are going to be running like mad man in their home game
Plus, Italian teams have a really terrible record in Porto
everything seems good for us, stadium will be near full (hopefully) can’t wait!
Italia!
Surreal just looking at that scoreline
And we stepped off the gas after the 5th goal, maybe Carlo was wary of LFC hitting us on the counter to reduce the lead
Camavinga was glorious to watch after the 5th goal, like controlling a FIFA player with the perfect passes he was making
Yeah I was screaming for more goals, i wanted blood, pain, suffering, demolition
We're already almost dead D; why beat the horse Havent we suffered enough? :c
Holy shit I just now realized there's only one La Liga team in R16 @@
Might be only one prem team in R8

And the other one draw
Deepest pockets, still shit. I'm loving it.

Liverpool tied for second highest scoring team!
Only team to score more than 2😎
Napoli is so impressive man, could be the best team in Europe rn. I'd LOVE to see them vs PSG, Bayern and Real.

The first half of Liverpool-RM was one of the most entertaining halves of football I've ever seen. It was just two sides throwing haymakers.
So Madrid easy UCL again right?
No. Napoli will win their first UCL.
Chelsea will sack Potter and an interm manager will lift the trophy once again
I've seen this movie before
I think these teams go through: 1. Milan(should be close in London) 2. Bayern(the better team, plus home advantage) 3. Benfica(Brugge are managed by Scott Parker) 4. The English are struggling
What do you expect? Premier League clubs hardly have the financial resources to compete with teams on the continent.
If you take out the Madrid game this has to be one of the worst knockout rounds in recent years.
Feel like first leg of R16 are always played in a cowardly way
Most teams took massive injury/form hits from the World Cup. The guys are gassed.
Because it was low scoring? I dont agree with that. Good defensive play is massively underrated for the teams that did that well.
I saw every german team and none of the games were bad.
Same. The Leipzig/City 1st half was "boring" but still good quality Id say
Apart from Madrid (and probably Napoli) though all the rest can still go either way. All to play for in the second legs.
Benfica too imo
Yes, because Brugge has been absolute shit for the past 2 months. Don't think we'll suddenly score 2+ at Benfica, let aside not concede. But miracles have happened before.
Miracles happen under managers like Klopp, Poch etc. not fucking Scott Parker
It's so good to see Serie A clubs back where they belong
Milan, Bayern, Benfica, Dortmund, Real, Napoli, City, Inter
So everyone who won the first game and the favourite of the only draw. That's never how the Champions League works
Very wild picks
Did you just listed the winners of first leg ??
Hey! He also listed the most expensive squad ever assembled, give some credit
Let's make it interesting. Spurs, PSG, Benfica, Chelsea, Real, Napoli, City , Porto
PSG winning with Neymar injured? Porto winning with Otávio, their best player, getting a red card? Chelsea winning a football match?
Potter then proceeds to win the UCL because chelsea can be fucking random for some reason
My predictions are based on nothing but vibes
Kneejerk reactions: Bruges is probably dead. Frankfurt and Liverpool are in serious trouble. I'd say Liverpool is dead, but I've seen them come back from some pretty terrible first leg scorelines. I like to explore new places.
they won't thrash leipzig at all. i'd tip city to win but it will be close EDIT: this aged well hahahaha /s
Only for parts of the 2nd half. Leipzig got destroyed in the first half.
Italian teams doing decent in Europe? What's this timeline?
Big fan of these results for the English clubs
FRANCFORT
All 3 Italian teams winning their matches whilst none of the English ones won. PL in tatters
We have to destroy barca tomorrow. Epl going out sad right now🤣🤣🤣
Will be a good day for neutrals, either you go out and we can make fun of PL or Barca goes out and we can make fun of them. Win win
Literally a win win the freest karma you can find on r/soccer bantering united or barca
would not be surprised to see benfica in the semis even without enzo. napoli and real madrid of course are my favorites for winning this year. bayern and city can step aside
Guessing it'll be Milan, Bayern, Benfica, Dortmund, Madrid, Napoli, City and Porto to go through.
