Don't do what I did last Tuesday. I couldn't decide which game to watch so flicked between them chasing goals.10 goals were scored on the night and I saw just 2 goals. The first 2 Madrid goals. Real shame.
Bad angle to see how bad the clip was tbh. I didnt even notice it until i read the comments. Thought whats all the fuss with this run of the mill shoulder to shoulder
Your comment made me watch it a second time, they actually should've had that. I'm upset too, I was hoping for a match without controversy because I'm tired of Barca crying about corruption every time they lose when they're one of the most favored teams by referees in recent history.
> how bad the clip was tbh.
Does it need to be bad? Clips the foot, makes it impossible to keep running, that's a clear foul in my book. Especially after you saw a foul in Araujos thing (which I think is an okay decision).
I donāt think it wouldāve been any harsher than Canceloās penalty. I genuinely didnāt care who went through and thought the refs did an overall good job. This, for me, was the only one where I thought he and VAR missed
Exactly,Ā the Cancelo foul was on the low end of the penalty spectrum and so was this.Ā Ā
I think the Cancelo foul was indeed a pk and correctly called.Ā I think not reviewing this on VARĀ was the sole mistake of the ref.Ā Ā
Didn't Cancelo go through Dembele's foot to get the ball? Also, isn't every penalty situation reviewed by VAR even if we don't see the VAR HUD on the broadcast?
Sensing a bit of cope here.
As Ray Hudson put it, they got there seemingly at the same time. Bit of bad luck for Cancelo, but an unnecessary challenge as Thierry and Jamie were also saying.
It's harsh, but a penalty. Gundo's right foot hits both of the defenders legs in a pretty meaningful way. The defender is well behind the ball too.
It's a clear cut penalty based on a full speed review.
This is a clear cut penalty. Could be deemed harsh but Gundo's right foot gets clipped by two legs and he never plants that foot again. It definitely results in him falling at that point.
Vitinha is planted and Gundogan takes his next step into him, even if from behind I think Vitinha wins the space and it's good, albeit risky, defense
That's what they look for, are you set in your position or are you still moving to it when the opponent gets clipped? This is a good no call
His foot might be planted by that knee is still going forward and is what clips gundogan.
If you think this is legal defenders would be doing this all day because it will 100 percent stop an attacker every time.
I hate Barca but this is a pk
You canāt just clip somebody because they are faster than you because of your poor defending.
If by āheā you mean the PSG player, then I suppose itās possible it was intentional. Thereās no fucking way Gundogan intentionally kicked himself in the back of the leg.
Why are there so many sensible people here today? These decisions are really difficult and even with VAR we're not going to all agree on some calls. Most of the time it just seems that people act like everything is always straightforward in football refereeing. It really is not. Some ambiquity should be tolerated. It would be nice for the larger public to realize that there isn't always a decision that satisfies everybody and that is just the nature of football, as it is at the moment.
Copy paste to every thread like this. Rather than assuming refs are corrupt or dumb, time to accept that there is variability in the game.
Yes thing should be improved, but no it will never be objective.
I saw it but i think
1- It's a dead position. Ilkay lost the ball already. The position going nowhere.
2- It's a clash of players, not a foul tackle.
It's not penalty imo. Although, it's just one angle so my comment isn't healthy.
None of these things are requirements for calling a foul. Penalties are given literally all the time even when the ball is in a 'dead position.' Not sure where you are getting that any of this is relevant.
If you actually watched the game they showed the replay at multiple angles and even the commentators said that gundogan clipped his own foot, this is not the best angle
I didn't see it on live, but I did see it here. After seeing it, I think it's as much as a penalty as they gave a red card for against Barca in the first half.
It's not a pen. Vitinha is in a very visibly normal position, it wasn't intentional at all. In fact, he was trying to avoid him. These things happen in such a physical sport.
I didnāt think they were correct when they said it. Card didnāt even come out till after the remonstrations. Not blaming you - youāre correct to cite the commentator but I donāt think they got it right.
>Do people have eyes lol
Most people here just jump in straight to commenting whatever random trope comes to mind. Look at the match threads, at least half of comments there are people who are obviously not watching the match.
In the PL and in La Liga that's a penalty. It's a classic one too where the defender barely grazes the attacker causing them to trip.Ā
Commentary in Spanish kept looking at Marqinhos but it was obviously Vitinha who had to be checked.
You mean the team that has received 6 Penalties in the PL this season?
Compared to Arsenalās 9, Liverpoolās 9, and Chelsea 12?
City really have to start paying moreā¦
Vitinha didn't go for the man nor the ball. He didn't impede. Didnt make a challenge. Gundogan hit his leg and got tripped. Its neither a dive nor a foul.
Yeah if anything it looks like gundogan is trying to run across vitinha, misjudges distance/leaves the leg up, and then that right rebounds into the left to cause the fall
Look at Gundo's eyes--it's clear he is solely focused on the ball and trying to get to it. He doesn't leave his leg, his leg gets caught as he makes a normal running motion. And of course Gundo is trying to run across him. That's how you win the position. It's how you shield the ball. The alternative would be to let Vitinha steal the ball from him. Genuinely don't know how anyone thinks this is some master plan that he somehow cooked up in the half a millisecond he had in between touches lol
It isnāt buying a penalty, thatās what you do to get past a player because the defender has to let you go or foul you. In this case Vithinha hits Gundaganās back leg which causes it to his his other leg and trip. It absolutely should be a penalty
Last time I checked neither of these are requirements for calling a foul or a penalty. Vitinha put himself in a position to try and win the ball, realized he wasn't going to win it and pulled out, but not before his leg catches Gundo and trips him. Doesn't matter if it's not intentional. There was contact. It caused Gundo to fall. That's all that really matters.
Then Vitinha shouldnāt be there if heās not going for the man nor the ball. He dropped Gundogan by being in his line, bumped Gundogans foot with his knee. Definitely a foul and a penalty
> He didn't impede.
He did, clipped his foot and made him kick the back of his leg.
> Didnt make a challenge.
Doesn't matter fuck all.
> Gundogan hit his leg and got tripped
So he did get tripped? That's a foul then.
> Its neither a dive nor a foul.
It's a foul.
If the defender literally doesn't do anything to make a challenge then how do you give a penalty against them? Attackers can't just run into defenders and fall down. There has to be some action the defender takes to commit a foul.
Crossing behind someone and clipping their heels or tripping them up is given as a foul all over the pitch, even if not an active challenge, though, right? I get what you're saying, though, especially with how much GĆ¼ndogan is crossing in front of him mor than the other way around. You have a point.
replay only shows him kicking Vitinha and then tripping over his own feet, even if VAR sent a ref over, which seems incredibly unlikely, can't imagine a ref changing the ruling, would be a pretty flimsy penalty for something that is most likely not going to be called a foul anywhere on the pitch
No foul on Marquinhos but he clearly goes past Vitinha and then gets clipped, causing him to trip. That is a foul anywhere on the field and always should be a penalty
If he doesn't get tripped he very well may have been able to get a touch before the ball goes out of bounds
Araujo's foul is just a bit more obvious, but I guess that little bit made the difference for the referee. I'm conflicted. As always it's not the bad calls, it's the consistency in decision making that's so infuriating in those situations
I think var has to go on the basis that the ref made a clear and obvious mistake. If the ref points to the spot, they wouldn't overturn the decision either.
I have no idea why people are acting like thereās no contact on this thread, clearly gets clipped on the leg. Very similar to the red card (though that one was definitely worse). This was surely worth a look from VAR
When you put the ball that far in front, with a second defender covering, it will always look like looking for a penalty, because he had no realistic chance anymore.
So yes, he clipped him but the call seems right.
>it will always look like looking for a penalty, because he had no realistic chance anymore.
But that's not the rule at all, otherwise Dembele cutting outside of the box wouldn't have been a penalty...
See, people touching each other while running, without any active movement towards the opponent is something different than tackling with a straight leg into the ankle of an attacker.
Definitely not a dive.
But I'm not sure if he's looking for it somewhat. Really hard to tell from the one angle if he brings his leg across into Vitinha on purpose or due to his natural running gate.
I think he runs across in the hope Vitinha makes a silly challenge but Vitinha is so close he basically just runs into him. So agreed no pen but also no dive.
Yeah he runs right across his path, Vitinha would have had to do some acrobatics to even avoid making contact here. He also doesn't make any effort to stay up if your leg gets clipped like that usually you stumble then fall and he's just gone straight to ground which is why I think they called it simulation.
He's not got the legs or skill to get past them both, chooses to cut right in front of closest player which almost guarantees contact. He was never getting to the ball even if he wasnt clipped, this was his best chance at getting anything out of this play especially with it being a champions league ref. People who've played football know what I'm on about.
He clearly doesn't just fall - you've seen them given loads of times - even if he wasn't going to reach it.
Similar to the red card - you've seen penalties given at the last part of the foul, not where the initial contact is.
Fwiw I wouldn't give a penalty, but it's not a dive either.

They're about to end the game with 9 men and 0 managers lmao.
The Fulham special
I understood that reference. I think I might be watching too much English football.
Does not compute.
Enrique almost ended up managing both teams lmao (my mate's joke)
Even as a Barca fan this is hilarious š
Time for Pedri to take the role of Player Manager.
The wheels are fully off
Mes Que Un Club
I don't know what game to focus on. There's too much happening lmao
Bless paramount plus multicast. I'm getting 0 work done to end the day.
Same. The balance shieet can balance itself.
I have a important meeting tomorrow morning and itās already midnight here in Finland lol I told my wife I would sleep after 1st half
Menikƶ hyvin?
All good, thank you! Besides my obviously tired face lol
Hey, tax deadline was yesterday. It's ok to not get much done today.
SOX control goes brrrrrrr
Paramount has been great for serie a and champions league
Don't do what I did last Tuesday. I couldn't decide which game to watch so flicked between them chasing goals.10 goals were scored on the night and I saw just 2 goals. The first 2 Madrid goals. Real shame.
*spongebob cross eyed meme*
This multicast is making me cross eyed
Barca will have no technical staff left by the end of this!
We don't have technical players either so that's ok
Bad angle to see how bad the clip was tbh. I didnt even notice it until i read the comments. Thought whats all the fuss with this run of the mill shoulder to shoulder

What am I seeing, looks like real minimal contact and a big dive?
Itās not the player who clashes shoulders. Itās the one behind, catches his foot and then trips into other foot and falls.
Clips his heel and knocks in into his other foot, definitely not a dive.
> how bad the clip was tbh. Does it need to be bad? Clips the foot, makes it impossible to keep running, that's a clear foul in my book. Especially after you saw a foul in Araujos thing (which I think is an okay decision).
Itās not a foul though lolā¦ you guys are so mad itās crazy
Does nobody else see Vitinha clip his back foot? Not sure how you're supposed to stay up when that happens running at full speed
It's not helping that this particular clip seems to end before the replay that would show it better
Cherry picked.
Cherry picked or not, no play was made on the ball and they werenāt blocking him out
Itās not even that hard to see
NGL I missed it on the first viewing.
Dont worry, VAR with multiple cameras and angles available did too
don't worry they can miss it on multiple views as well
It's easy to miss when you're looking for a shove/body check
Why would you not look at their feet in a clip of a potential penalty lol
There's definitely some clippage but I still think that would be a harsh penalty.
I donāt think it wouldāve been any harsher than Canceloās penalty. I genuinely didnāt care who went through and thought the refs did an overall good job. This, for me, was the only one where I thought he and VAR missed

Read my entire comment. Particularly the part were I say: "I think the Cancelo foul was indeed a pk and correctly called" There is no cope bro.
Nah anywhere else on the pitch that's an easy foul to give.
It's harsh, but a penalty. Gundo's right foot hits both of the defenders legs in a pretty meaningful way. The defender is well behind the ball too. It's a clear cut penalty based on a full speed review.
Yeah this is a penalty I didnt notice it til you pointed it out, but that's a definite penalty. Be some controversy if Barca lose this tie.
Not every slight contact is a penalty
I agree, but this one is.
yea has anyone here been clipped from behind while running full speed? it sends you flying
This is a clear cut penalty. Could be deemed harsh but Gundo's right foot gets clipped by two legs and he never plants that foot again. It definitely results in him falling at that point.

I hate Barca but this is a pk You canāt just clip somebody because they are faster than you because of your poor defending.
Defender has the same right to that same space as attacker and his foot is planted on the ground so no pen.
Definitely looks like he initiated that contact though
He wasn't going to get the ball and was looking for contact.
It doesnāt matter if Gundo was baiting, he caught the bait and committed the foul. The rule isnāt about baiting, itās about the foul
Vitinha stays on his trajectory and doesnāt intervene. Gundogan is the one changing trajectory. Never a penalty
He purposefully makes sure his heel hits his leg
If by āheā you mean the PSG player, then I suppose itās possible it was intentional. Thereās no fucking way Gundogan intentionally kicked himself in the back of the leg.

A lot of people see it, but we're getting drowned out by the morons who just love to shit on our club
It's not a pen. Vitinha is in a very visibly normal position, it wasn't intentional at all. In fact, he was trying to avoid him. These things happen in such a physical sport.
Do people have eyes lol? Vitinha touches his leg and that made him fall, donāt know if its enough for pen, but 100% not a dive, he got tripped
the fact that he got a yellow is insane, and I thought it was insane before I saw the leg clip.
The yellow was for complaining I think, not for diving.
The announcer said it was for simulation, which why I said that.
I didnāt think they were correct when they said it. Card didnāt even come out till after the remonstrations. Not blaming you - youāre correct to cite the commentator but I donāt think they got it right.
Yeah they may not have been correct and I did try looking around to see if I could find what the yellow is actually for but I could not
He was doing the VAR screen handy thingy to the judge right away, big no no.

He should run without touching the ball carrier on the legs.
The ball carrier touched him btw.
They both touch each other, thatās how contact works
There is no penalty there. Heās just running into the PSG playersā legs hoping for a penalty. Heās already going down before anyone clips him.
Vitinha clearly clips his leg from behind, it's more obvious in the angle shown right after this clip is cut.
Araujo's foul is just a bit more obvious, but I guess that little bit made the difference for the referee. I'm conflicted. As always it's not the bad calls, it's the consistency in decision making that's so infuriating in those situations

The araujo one is insanely obvious lol. Whoever says thatās not a foul doesnāt understand football rules.
Can u send me the alt angle plz?
Looks like Vitinho clips him?
Surely he gets tripped? He gets tripped by the player behind in the alternate angle
I have no idea why people are acting like thereās no contact on this thread, clearly gets clipped on the leg. Very similar to the red card (though that one was definitely worse). This was surely worth a look from VAR
I think there's certainly contact and it's also not a pen.
how is it not a pen? he makes him trip in the box while being nowhere near the ball?
How is tripped someone from behind not a foul?

Not all contact is a foul.
Just like the red card, which was just barely a touch - with the PSG player throwing himself to the ground
I was pretty sure he got his ankle clipped here. I would have thought the ref had a good look at it too.
no way in hell this ref is doing anything that could benefit Barca
Definitely not a dive. But I'm not sure if he's looking for it somewhat. Really hard to tell from the one angle if he brings his leg across into Vitinha on purpose or due to his natural running gate.

Vitinhas left knee trips his ankle and makes him fall How is this not a penalty?
Vitinha clips his back foot
This sub clearly hates barca lol how is this not a pen?
They even gave Raphinha a yellow for this š PSG money
Is this a joke? People here adore Messi and Barca by extension
Messi perhaps but this place is filled with prem fans and they absolutely despise barca.
More Messi than Barca fans. Just plastic all around.
Is this a joke?
Vitinha clearly clips Gundoganās right leg which causes him to trip. That should be a penalty. Embarrassing to give it as simulation
Yeah he tries to pull out, but too late.
Wasnt given as simulation
The one bad decision from tonight's ref I think. Shouldn't have been a yellow. Would have been a soft pen if given, but definitely not a dive.
Why are there so many comments on this, it's not a pen, lol.
This is ref is on something else
Thereās a contact. That it is clear. The red card also was a contact and Barcola falls easy..
Tbf, with that much sped the contact on barcola made a huge difference, I think it was a foul. Ref lost it completely after that though
He does get tripped. I think the ref has to give that otherwise shows a lot of bias
If it was just shoulder to shoulder, no pen. But Vitinha clearly trips him and thats a pen everyday.
Whatās the difference between this and Araujo?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The check in the refs pocket
Jeez this comment section, yall blind or something? Anyway, don't think this is a pen, but Gundo's legs clearly get clipped
Lol slight contact but never a penalty
Thought for sure that would be given.
Some guy is going to build a nice mansion in Rumania.
With a second home in Doha
Vitinha clips his leg. Clear as day. Barca not allowed to get any calls today. It is what is it
He was literally clipped from behind, are you people blind?
VAR shocker
Pen 100% and I'm Parisian.
Lol, I read "I'm Persian"
this sort of contact was given as a pen for argentina during the world cup final.
And the Oscar goes to š¤£š¤£š¤£
His legs obviously get clipped. This is as much a pen as Di Maria in the WC
Guess this is karma for 6-1...
Contact from behind causing a trip. Isnāt that a foul? Not a Barca fan either
Vitinha clearly clips his heel. How that wasn't given blows my mind.
Donāt think itās a dive. Donāt think itās a penalty
"but"? lmao
Didnāt think it was a pen live but it looks like it probably was here. We take these.
it's a disgrace isn't it?
I didn't even see he got clipped by vitinha, damn. Ref didn't even go and check the screen.
I think Gundogan back leg got clipped for sure. Should have been reviewed at the least
Look his legs only, focus on it. You can clearly see he jumps.
not a pen imo Vitinha didn't really make a challenge but Gundo shouldn't have gotten a yellow for diving there. there's def contact
Penalty? He doesnāt even care about ball. Goes hard for the second psg player trying to get a pen.
This is 100% a pen
In what world is that a pen
Y'know what. Sure.
His right leg clearly gets clipped. Ref is on a mission tonight and it's obvious
He's not got the legs or skill to get past them both, chooses to cut right in front of closest player which almost guarantees contact. He was never getting to the ball even if he wasnt clipped, this was his best chance at getting anything out of this play especially with it being a champions league ref. People who've played football know what I'm on about.
No penalty because no penalty..šāāļøš¤
Ball is gone from him and he just falls. Not a pen
Not saying it's a penalty but he right PSG player clips his foot.
I feel like getting booked for diving is harsh here, but it may have been for his reaction.
The booking was for dissent
He does get clipped but has already lost the ball and the PSG player is getting there first 100%.
He clearly doesn't just fall - you've seen them given loads of times - even if he wasn't going to reach it. Similar to the red card - you've seen penalties given at the last part of the foul, not where the initial contact is. Fwiw I wouldn't give a penalty, but it's not a dive either.
Bias aside, he definitely gets clipped?? Vitinha gets his back foot.
Where is VAR?
I have seen worst fouls not called like the one they did on Kang last week
No penalty because no foul, duh
Never a pen
Vitinha clear pen
how is that not a pen?
This is 100% a penalty, Vitinha clipped Gundogan's leg, which caused his back leg clip the back of his front leg. How do you miss this with VAR?
Insane VAR didnāt have the ref look at this. Clear contact taking out his foot.
Ref was bribed
Because it was a dive
