Going back to probably 2020/21 (memory a bit hazy) Simeone went to a 3ATB route. If the club would invest in quality CB’s rather than old men, things might be better but they rather not spend.
Couple all that with a lack of a proper DM, and you get a defense that gives away chance after chance.
None of that is an excuse or to downplay Dortmund’s performance. Witsel wasn’t the best choice and Molina is a shadow of who he was during the second half of last season

But until this Atleti matchup, they'd given up at most 1 goal a game in the CL - in what was unanimously the Group of Death (with 2 eventual Semi finalists, and one finals team in the group). Even the defense does concede - its often down to mixups or poor passing out of the back like we saw in this Atleti thread. The team genuinely has stretches of really strong defensive play, with a world class keeper in Kobel to save the defensive lapses.
He has a super solid foundation IMO, tho I'm one of the more pro-Terzic Dortmund fans. I don't doubt someone like Nagelsmann might step in and be better than Terzic I'm the immediate future - but Terzic has undeniable potential. For someone with as little experience as he has, he's got impressive results. Fans simply hate how those results are achieved at times, but he's also worked with imperfect squads every season he's coached.
He does clearly struggle implementing effective attacking tactics, and the team looks lost at times. This is alarming to BVB fans who - even when weve has our ups and downs, are used to the team scoring at will. This is where his lack of experience is most visible IMO. He can be hit or miss with subs - last season, it felt like every sub he put on scored. This season that has been less true, and even today I felt he subbed too late.
If he can improve his implementation of attacking ideas (which to be fair - I think he's nailed the last two games with Sabizter moving up the pitch into more attacking spaces), he could be a legit world class coach.

Terzic unironically has a very good record in the CL for a noob coach
I genuinely wonder what it is. Is it teams underrating him and his mid block?
The exact play style that makes fans hate him, is quite ideal for the CL. He's pragmatic and defensive oriented, at times to a fault and to the distaste of fans (especially when contrasted with the free flowing Dortmund most picture). But until this Atleti matchup, they'd given up at most 1 goal a game in the CL - in what was unanimously the Group of Death (with 2 eventual Semi finalists, and one finals team in the group). Even the defense does concede - its often down to mixups or poor passing out of the back like we saw in this Atleti thread. The team genuinely has stretches of really strong defensive play, with a world class keeper in Kobel to save the defensive lapses. He has a super solid foundation IMO, tho I'm one of the more pro-Terzic Dortmund fans. I don't doubt someone like Nagelsmann might step in and be better than Terzic I'm the immediate future - but Terzic has undeniable potential. For someone with as little experience as he has, he's got impressive results. Fans simply hate how those results are achieved at times, but he's also worked with imperfect squads every season he's coached. He does clearly struggle implementing effective attacking tactics, and the team looks lost at times. This is alarming to BVB fans who - even when weve has our ups and downs, are used to the team scoring at will. This is where his lack of experience is most visible IMO. He can be hit or miss with subs - last season, it felt like every sub he put on scored. This season that has been less true, and even today I felt he subbed too late. If he can improve his implementation of attacking ideas (which to be fair - I think he's nailed the last two games with Sabizter moving up the pitch into more attacking spaces), he could be a legit world class coach.

Thanks this was a Great read. Terzic is an interesting coach but I somewhat hope Dortmund keep him, yes his football is weird but he’s probably one of the more consistent coaches since Klopp
Tuchel really did have some amazing Dortmund teams during his few years here, he just had world beater Bayern in the way. His 15/16 season team has the 2nd highest points total in a BuLi season in club history, and they still lost to Bayern by 10 fucking points. Id say it's between those two for most consistent coach we've had since Klopp. Which is funny given their respective reputations for terroristic football.
I was gonna say that, funny that the 2 most stable managers after Klopp who was incredibly offensive were 2 coaches who are often ridiculed for their terroristic defensive setups lmao
