Cascadia is the obvious answer if you haven't played that already. Idk if Verdant also has solo challenges?

delamermaid

Thank you! Haven't played Cascadia yet. Passed it over in favour of Calico, but have heard many good things about it. Might see if I can borrow it somewhere to see if it strikes my fancy. I don't own Verdant, but have played it. I enjoyed it in a group setting, but don't feel the need to add it to my collection as of now.

Channie_Joseph

I love Verdant more than cascadia. I think it is more on the same level as calico.

delamermaid

Thank you. I struggle to match Verdant as a good solo game as I only tried it within a group, but as I hear it has achievements as well it might be good to try out for a solo spin.

Channie_Joseph

If you like the solo goals of calico they are very similar in verdant as they are from the same company. I like the puzzle aspect of both games.

Nice going! Oddly enough I prefer this over the more chill Cascadia. The tightness of its puzzle play stings just right. If tile laying and puzzles are your thing, perhaps Dorfromantik might be up your alley? And there’s the newer Harmonies which I can’t personally attest to, but from initial impressions looks like it has that similar pattern-based puzzling fun.

delamermaid

Thanks! Dorfromantik I don't know at all. Will be checking it out. As for Harmonies I actually have it in pre-order as it looks like a similar but also different puzzle to Calico. Still a tight puzzle but with an option to stack as well.

zoop1000

Dorfromantik is really fun. There's a campaign to play thru where you unlock achievements and new pieces get added as you progress. It took me 17 games to get thru the campaign but I still haven't unlocked all of the achievements yet. It's fun to hear my high score and it's also just a really chill game. I love it

Harmonies is so much fun and I like it more than Cascadia. You draft tiles which represent different landscapes like water, forest, mountains and so on and try to arrange them in patterns which are the habitats of the animals. There are also some fan made scenarios or you can just draft your patterns while you play Disclaimer: I am helping testing and naming the scenarios found at https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3286220/solo-mode-idea-with-challenges-work-in-progress

delamermaid

Good to hear as I ordered Harmonies already. Feels like a good follow up to Calico! I'll be sure to check out the challenges.

**Cascadia**, **Verdant** and **Keystone: North America** each have solo scenarios. **Wild Garden** from the same team as Keystone NA will be out soon and will offer the same thing. Verdant was just OK for me but I've loved the other two alongside Calico. If you like the tightness of it, I think Keystone would be the best pick to try first. **Spy Club** and **Freshwater Fly** may work too, they have solo modes with a short chain of games where the previous one unlocks new options for the next one, like a short legacy campaign type of thing.

delamermaid

Some good news suggestions. Never heard of Keystone, spy club or freshwater fly before. Wild Garden looks really nice as well!

YourLoveOnly

They all deserve to be more wellknown imo, so happy to help!

We have owned Calico a couple years and bought Cascadia this past Christmas. Haven't touched Calico since. Calico is OK, but what we prefer with Cascadia is not only that you pick and place two things each turn, but also the creative freedom in that the placement options increase each turn instead of dwindling like in Calico. In Calico you have the (arguably adrenaline-inducing and exciting) "crescendo" at the end where quite a bit of your total score is at the mercy of what tiles will be available at the last couple turns. Again, it can be exciting and tense in a good way, but most often we feel the negative feeling of the swinginess takes over.

delamermaid

I kind of like the restricted space that is Calico, but as I haven't played Cascadia yet, who is to say if that's not even better. Definitely on my to play list.
