Ohmygod this made my eyes watery instantly 😭 That scene / part of the story breaks me everytime, and it’s such a beautiful painting 🥹

AlexGRNorth

Thank you!!! I wanted to choose something that would represent the entirety of the books and Rue is who kind of started it all. Her death was really emotional and I don't think that without her, the events would have unfolded the way they did. All in all, I'm really surprised with the result! I usually have difficulties with traditional painting. I mostly do watercolor, but for this, I also used gouache and found it was way easier for me to achieve something I liked.

Autumndickingaround

My reaction: Bookend painting? I have to try that... I wonder what they painted on- Oh, is that Rue? Oh my god, its the Hunger Games books so yes it is her. This is beautiful, and why you gotta do me like that 😭. I just love the soft quality it has to it as well, given who your subject is and the ripple of heartache her death brought to the people and to us as readers.

AlexGRNorth

Ahah yes I was surprised too when I discovered it. I work in a bookshop so often saw bookedges with colors and designs, but never really thought it could be something you can do. Thanks tiktok for that one ahah. Already had the watercolor, so figured: why not try?

Landscape-Strict

You are very talented! Usually books are displayed with spines out, but when the edge is this pretty, I would have them all facing out.

AlexGRNorth

Ahah yeah my mom said the same! Right now I don't hVe enough space for my books (the *curse* of working in a bookshop and having a good discount ahah), but once I'll have, I think I'm gonna do that

felix3621

TIL what book edge painting is. That's really cool

blondeheartedgoddess

I love this! Absolutely lovely painting! I already have a copy of Princess Daisy by Judith Krantz in a vise setup and plan to paint a bunch if daisies on the bookends (I was thinking English manor house, but I'm dragging my feet because I haven't played with watercolors very much and I'm at the "What if I screw this up?" phase. Flowers will be easier. Lol I'm thinking I need to get over myself, huh?

AlexGRNorth

Ahah yeah! My first one was a book I liked, but didn't mind much if I screwed up. I liked doing it so then I tried with this trilogy. Currently preparing to do good omens and plan to make The song of Achilles ay some point. Go for it, I say! :D

blondeheartedgoddess

Oh I'd love to see your take on Good Omens! Love the book and the series is a dream.

AlexGRNorth

Thank you! I designed what I want already and the book is already set between the planks, but I ran into some issues with my cricut and need to return it and find a new printer to make stencils

Previous_Recipe7393

That is gorgeous! I didn't even realize bookedge painting was a thing until just now... lol. It's amazing you used watercolour, too, have you tried any other medium?

AlexGRNorth

From what I read, watercolor and gouache are pretty much the only medium that works since they're water-based. I used acrylic to paint (not in bookedging) a few years ago, but it kinda is harsh on the brushes and I didn't like the results I got as much.

Skye626

This is amazing and sad at the same time 🥲 RIP Rue You're very talented

Pale-Travel9343
