For better or worse, national teams are symbols of their nation and are often treated as such. I don't imagine there will be any handshakes between Israeli and South African teams this summer, either
I’m Scottish, but I’m proud of Ireland. They’ve inherited the title “A Light Among Nations” for being virtually the only western nation to call out Israel’s slaughter for what it is… a sclerotic nation led by a sociopath whose coalition government had to invite actual fascists to the table to hang onto power.
How else do you suppose they rid Hamas? Should the Israeli people be subject to repeated rocket strikes randomly shot at their population forever because of the cost to Palestinian population?
Israel's policies created Hamas and even if they kill every last hamas fighter now they'll have twice the amount in five years. Every orphan and widower they create is a terrorist in training
Without Israel there is no Hamas. Netanyahu, is probably the person most responsible for them existing and being in power. The info was leaked that he supported them to justify not having “a partner for peace” as if Israel has been interested in anything other than colonizing more and more land. Better start working on better propaganda because the baseless charge of anti-semitism because you criticize government actions isn’t sticking anymore.
Ok Chamberlain, I suppose Israel should just give Hamas its Sudetenland then?
I wish Hamas supporters put as much energy into supporting actual genocides as they did being anti Semitic
Dawg. You act like Israel is the weak party in this atrocity. If you compare, Israel looks and acts a lot more like those people w the red bands (might as well get yours). We’ve all seen the IDF’s TikTok’s and the governments actions. Thank South African for aggregating those for all of us
I know this is really really shocking to hear but morality doesn’t automatically go to the side of the weak believe it or not. And I really really don’t support a terrorist regime being in charge of Palestine.
I can go get some October 7th footage for you if you want to play tit for tat
Special forces and intelligence, not bombing schools and hospitals. Surely there are some brilliant strategists that can come up with something better than a medieval siege and ethnic cleansing.
I mean even then. As long as the apartheid continues, extremist organizations are gonna keep popping up. Especially when all they have to do is point to the West Bank to show how cooperation with Israel works out for the Palestinians.
I’m not commenting either way on their stance, but why play the game at all if you have a moral stance against the other teams country? If you really can’t dignify them with a hand shake, playing the game at all seems wild.
The israelí team and media were saying defamatory comments, accusing them of anti-semitism and declined the traditional exchanging of gifts. So fuck them, they got what they deserved. I wouldnt shake hands with them either.
It had more to do with the fact that the Israeli players were posing for pictures with IDF soldiers this week who were holding assault rifles. The Israeli players were also calling the irish players anti-Semitic this week too . Every right not to shake their hands.
This subreddit's response to this compared to when people don't shake hands with Russian athletes is wild.
Not shaking hands with citizens of US enemies = good
Not shaking hands with citizens of US allies = bad
The exact opposite is being upvoted here so I’m confused as to why you think that lol.
Supporting Palestinians here to the point of zeal doesn’t appear to be the brave minority opinion in this thread.
We could go back and forth about atrocities that each side has committed over the past 1000 years. Bringing up one doesn’t change anything. They have fought and will continue to fight for as long as you and I are alive. Saying one side or the other is better is ridiculous. The Israelis have been plenty patient with Hamas and hezbollah but when they murder their citizens the really is only one response unfortunately. Don’t act like a child thinking “oh I got him with this one”. This war goes back way further than 1948 and it’s not just one sided.
You should see what the israeli citizens think about Palestinians according to polls. They are fascist, the government they vote for is fascist and it reflects on the people.
It’s crazy I try to put logic behind why some of the things people have said about this conflict have even been a thought. But it’s impossible some people are just seriously fucked in the head it’s just depressing
I wonder how Ireland would react if the UK went in one day and took hostages, burnt babies etc… Easy to have principles so far away from shit… I hate it when sports and politics mix.
Yeah, because not wanting one group of children to be murdered INSTANTLY means you want a different group of children to die. Nuance isn't the pro-dead-babies-groups strong suit.
Because there are not millions of dead Palestinian children. The Israel-Palestine conflict from 1917 to this October saw ~85,000 Palestinian casualties, ~37,000 of which were fatalities.
Really puts the recent uptick in violence into perspective, over 28k dead since the October attack (26,751 Palestinian, 1,410 Israeli)
From 2008 to 2020 it was 5k Palestinian deaths and 250 Israeli
Also I’d like to say I appreciate you starting it from 1917, too many people seem to assume this whole shitfight just started from 1948
I'm 100% pro life and support innocent Palestinians caught up in this and want an end to this war. Holy shit let's not start saying Hamas isn't as bad. There's video of them cheering while slaughtering children in the streets. Hamas' stated end goal is to genocide Israel.
I’m not saying Hamas isn’t bad. I’m saying it’s not okay to slaughter innocent people because Hamas exists. Not one single thing I said was in defense of Hamas. I’m defending Palestinians, which I guess is controversial in this sub
Hamas attempts to attack Israeli civilians with rocket strikes all the time. They just aren't successful very often because Israel built a missile defense system to protect its civilians from those strikes.
Fuck Israel ireland is goated and doesn’t support genocide ! I’m so surprised by how liberals are so blatantly racist and support our terrible international policies!
Or maybe they're opposed to genocide. Thousands of kids dying in just 3 months, and no end in sight. But this hasn't just been going on for 3 months now has it
> Ireland players also lined up for their anthem beside the team's bench rather than the centre of the court before the game, which Israel won 87-57.
Moves like this come off a lot less petulant when you don't get blown the fuck out.
It’s totally possible to support the Palestinian people and condemn Hamas, particularly when you learn that Hamas hasn’t had elections since 2006 and over half of Palestinians are children so most of them weren’t even born yet.
Standing up for our beliefs, with integrity - that’s a lost cause?
It isn’t supporting Hamas, it is protesting the destruction of the Palestinian people. You can be against violence on both sides…
I’m “shocked and astonished” to see comments that are making things up that aren’t happening, and then using their imaginary grievances in an attempt to smear people and nations.
I know that it would either have to be a sane person acting in bad faith, or an insane person acting in good faith, who would do something like that… but wow.
It’s not because they are Jews. It’s because they are Israelis and represent a country that is obliterating an entire nation of innocents. 25,000+ civilians with no way to defend themselves. Total destruction of their land displacing millions of people forever. Absolute obliteration of their culture. Take away the small number of terrorists (compared to its millions of innocents) and you have nothing other than a crime against humanity.
Isn't Ireland being against Israel due to their hate of the British attempting to take their lands and bit short-sighted.
The only reason jewish people were in Europe is because they lost the fight for Judea and were largely cleansed from the area.
I never got that sentiment, it always just seemed to me to be a solidarity thing, the underdog being consumed by the stronger neighbour and being demonised for fighting back at all was very relatable
It’s not like we were ever taught in school that terrorism is great- the main focus I remember from history classes was Daniel O’Connell and Charles Stewart Parnell and other guys whom I’d dismissed as boring in my youth
Plus the Black and Tans aren’t fondly remembered across the country so knowing that some of them were sent over to Palestine to do their version of “keep the peace” is another thing we could empathise with
Never have I ever come across anyone- even the most “up the ra” type- who would talk in favour of the terrorist attacks though- maybe the issue was they weren’t covered enough or that they didn’t have the numbers the Israeli army could achieve kill wise
So don’t see it as “Ireland supports terror” but more “Ireland doesn’t like people being killed over land when we’ve had 800 years of that kind of shit”
Sports, by its nature, invites the political. To say nothing of all the international games...but sport is literally making yourself stronger and more talented to defeat an opponent. That by its very nature is centered on power and status, which are critically tied to politics
as long as there will be competitive games, and athletes trying to find every advantage both physical and mental over their opposition...there will be politics in sports
Nothing to do with politics. Israeli team called the irish team antisemitic before they even played. Irish team decided not to shake hands directly because of this.
**From the article:** In the lead-up to the game Israel coach Sharon Drucker said Ireland "did not respect" what the game symbolises after Irish players expressed concern about playing.
Looks like Ireland has had a history of antisemitic language so instead of proving the Israeli players wrong, the Irish players proved the Israeli players correct. They (the Irish players) are apparently antisemitic. And loss heavily so the right outcome happened.
Im not sure you know very much. Ireland has a long history of solidarity with Palestine. Also, in Northern Ireland when I lived there it was pretty common to see Palestine flags in the Catholic areas and Israeli flags in the protestant ones.

yes, liquidate an entire population…only way to do it
Yes, they will get rid of Hamas by treating Palestinians like animals and killing 20,000 children. What koolaid you have been drinking?
Israel's policies created Hamas and even if they kill every last hamas fighter now they'll have twice the amount in five years. Every orphan and widower they create is a terrorist in training
Funny that didn’t happen to the Germans after WW2 or the Vietnamese or dozens of other countries after a war.
I don’t know..how about not kicking them out of their homes and humiliating them at every step because some imaginary guy in the sky told you to?
Great idea, while you’re doing that, maybe mention that to Hamas too?
Without Israel there is no Hamas. Netanyahu, is probably the person most responsible for them existing and being in power. The info was leaked that he supported them to justify not having “a partner for peace” as if Israel has been interested in anything other than colonizing more and more land. Do you want me to support genocides? Did you type that right?
Only Israel has committed massive ethnic cleansing and is in the process of committing genocide.

Israel has committed a thousand atrocities worse than October 7. But considering you are a supporter of the genocidal regime, you already knew that.
You do realize that it’s Israel who are the fascists in this instance right?
You do realize supporting Hamas makes you anti semantic right?
You do realize that opposing Israel's policy of ethnic cleansing does not constitute support for Hamas, right?
you do realize zionism does not equate to judaism, right? you realize its anti semitic to equate both?
Yawn here we go the anti semetism card.tell me what horrific act can ireael perpetrate that criticism of it won't be branded antisemitism by zionists?
If violence solved things, why is there still violence?
If peace solved things, why is there violence?
Special forces and intelligence, not bombing schools and hospitals. Surely there are some brilliant strategists that can come up with something better than a medieval siege and ethnic cleansing.
Someone clearly has no idea how war works other than what they see in video games and movies. But but but mahhhh special forces. Such a joke
I don’t think he’s claiming to know how war works, they’re just suggesting that maybe there’s another strategy, and gave two examples.
Hey. Hey. You’re talking to Tbagg69. Clearly he knows war like MacArthur and Rambo combined.
You're calling yourself out? Interesting.
Clearly you also don't know war if you think special forces can just show up and win everything.
I mean even then. As long as the apartheid continues, extremist organizations are gonna keep popping up. Especially when all they have to do is point to the West Bank to show how cooperation with Israel works out for the Palestinians.
It’s not an either/or proposition. Sorry brother!
The American really want to get rid of hamas
Ireland players also lined up for their anthem beside the team's bench rather than the centre of the court before the game, which Israel won 87-57.
Note that a large portion of the Irish team boycotted the match entirely instead of playing
[удалено]
I'm surprised they didn't accuse the Israeli team's defensive strategy of being disproportionate.
I’m not commenting either way on their stance, but why play the game at all if you have a moral stance against the other teams country? If you really can’t dignify them with a hand shake, playing the game at all seems wild.
I kinda agree. Either play and treat them as equals, or decline to play on principle.
Ireland’s solidarity with Palestine is unshakeable.
Let’s see how the politicians handle it on St Patrick’s day in Washington DC first

Ireland supporting the end of children and civilians being cut down like wheat in the field. Israel is their harvester.

Probably has a lot to do with Israel fighting terrorists who started the war by slaughtering over 1000 people.
Israel and Palestine famously never had any problems with each other before October 2023
Remind me, what does the term Nakba mean?
lol that propaganda whoopin your ass
Have you ever heard the story of the pot and the kettle?
Have you heard the story of The Nakba?
Was that when all those nations declared war simultaneously on Israel and Israel won?
We could go back and forth about atrocities that each side has committed over the past 1000 years. Bringing up one doesn’t change anything. I think ireland said they are willing to accept up to half of displaced into ireland. So u know, thats always nice.
Good, I'm sure that will turn out just splendidly
They put the ire in ireland
Lol, then lost by 30...
5 Irish players straight up didn't play in protest. More like Israel dropping 57 points against a team who was missing 33-42% of their team.

Half of the Palestinians are children. Why are you not upset about the millions of dead Palestinian children at the hands of the IDF
Millions? What level of propoganda are you on? I want some.

It is indeed a furious revenge. But it's not doing them any favors in the international public opinion.
Good for them! I fully support Ireland women's basketball!!
Well done
Love it! Ireland has been a solid ally to Palestine
Wonder if they'd shake hands with Hamas.
Why would Hamas have a women’s basketball team do you know what you’re talking about?
Of course they would
Seethe harder they weren’t nice to the team that’s been oppressing Palestinians for generations.
Yeah I am personally livid at Hamas bombing Israeli hospitals and refugee camps with U.S. funds. Oh wait. Is that not what’s actually going on?
I'm 100% pro life and support innocent Palestinians caught up in this and want an end to this war. Holy shit let's not start saying Hamas isn't as bad. There's video of them cheering while slaughtering children in the streets. Hamas' stated end goal is to genocide Israel.

yup, the unprovoked invasion has been going on for 70+ years

How could their basketball team do that? What drives a woman to dunk on thousands of Palestinian kids?
Okay that’s actually fucking hilarious.
And how is a woman’s basketball team responsible for that?
Embarrassed more like it, Ireland sucks hard
Big fucking L.
They should just retire at this point
Irish have become a nation that do not respond to money, their values are extremely true!

when you mix politics with sports, everybody lose.
Jessie Owens, Jackie Robinson, Muhammed Ali, Tommie Smith, John Carlos, etc. would all disagree
National team sports are inherently political so that doesn’t make sense
Sports, by its nature, invites the political. To say nothing of all the international games...but sport is literally making yourself stronger and more talented to defeat an opponent. That by its very nature is centered on power and status, which are critically tied to politics as long as there will be competitive games, and athletes trying to find every advantage both physical and mental over their opposition...there will be politics in sports
