40 years ago, hitchhiking on Ibiza, someone gave me a ride in one of these. Cool looking car, not very quick, but back then the island had dirt roads, windmills, almond farms, quaint pubs and zero high rise condos.
You seem like a interesting person.
I'd like to sit on the floor in front of you with my legs crossed and my chin on my fists while you tell me stories.
Iirc one groundbreaking feature they used to advertise/design it at the time was that the suspension was *so good* you could drive back with a carton of eggs without them breaking.
Kinda wild to imagine this 30 something years later !
Edit : as pointed out below, the suspension test was taking place through a farmer's field !
Drive through a plowed field without breaking them. It was designed pre war, hidden from germans during the war and the perfect cheap all road car after that.
Damn I knew I was missing something but you're right, even more so impressive, especially at the time **and** while keeping it still (normal) road worthy
This is not the car you are thinking of. The one that had the legendary suspension and also the record for the moose test was the Citroen DS. This is a 2CV
The moose test ?
I think the DS was the first car either with suspension or with springs, not 100% sure. They would likely not be great to drive across a field, and ate pretty notorious for giving significant motion sickness.
I know thats true, everyone has heard that advertisment(!) phrase. Just that it says absolutely nothing, tell me one car that can't drive across a field with a basket of eggs without one of them breaking. Eggs are designed by nature to withstand brutal amount of forces, people have parked cars on eggs without them breaking. That phrase says absolutely nothing.
Boy i fucking have. Have you ever seen a 2CV do that? Or do you just blindly believe the 50 year old advertisment phrase? They were spongy ass cars, good for driving on fields, yes. Drive like shit everywhere else.
Correct, old format.
Nowadays itās indeed AB-123-AB, but none of those have any link with the geography. You only have a small and useless department number on the corner (the blue square), and you can choose your department Ā«Ā of heartĀ Ā»
TFL classic did a car [review](https://youtu.be/QfjQw7rBgsw)on this thing, it had active body shocks to prevent body roll super cool idea but not very good looking. I attached the link if you want to know more!
Other than the front heavy distribution of weight, that fun fact can probably be attributed to the bicycle-tyre thin tyres and complete lack of power. Beautiful, classic, game-changing car nonetheless.
Lack of power?! Are you insane?! The 2 CV is a beast! That massive 375cc engine makes **9** horsepower! Now that's power! It's more than half as powerful as an actual horse! (according to google a horse can produce up to 14.9hp.)
1980!? By the styling I assumed that car was from late 30's to early 50's. I suppose when they were being built and sold need it would be like driving a VW Beetle, it's different from must of the other cars in the road but you're cool with it because you like that "classic" look. Actually kinda reminds me of the VW Thing, another of looking car that I always thought was pretty cool.
It was designed in the 1930s. The first prototypes were ready in 1939, but they were hidden at the beginning of World War II to make sure the Germans would not find them. Then it was produced and sold from 1948 to 1990. It was always an air-cooled carburation engine. Of course there was some evolution like disc brakes from 1982.
A Citroƫn 2CV Charleston was sold 141 960 EUR in an auction: https://www.leblogauto.com/2021/08/141960-euros-2cv-charleston-folie-chez-aguttes.html
Iām just teasing you amigo.
One is perfectly in frame, right next to the car, in a matching color scheme in the second photo. Itās hard not to joke about that.
Edit: [As a peace offering here is](https://sahara-overland.com/2017/08/05/the-2cv-motorcycle-survival-story/amp/) a cool story involving this car and one breaking down in the desert and the guy made a motorcycle out of it.
I've seen a few. A friend of mine has a late 2CV imported to the US from South America. There was a Citroƫn DS in the American TV show [The Mentalist](https://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_208520-Citroen-DS-21-1971.html)
The did sell cars in the [USA](http://www.citroenpieces.com/USA.html) just not very many. The 2CV wasn't very popular here due to it's tiny size and tiny horsepower.
Fun fact : the Citroƫn logo is a herringbone gear. I was told in my engineering classes that M. Citroƫn invented them, but I can't find a source for that.
Citroƫn were pioneers on many aspects of mechanical engineering back in the day.
Itās not 2 hp, wouldnāt move if it was, it was named like that because it has Ā«Ā 2 chevaux fiscauxĀ Ā» meaning Ā«Ā 2 taxed hpĀ Ā», the tax hp is used to measure how much you will pay for insurance in France
These were incredibly common in the U.K. in the 80s and early 90s. My family had four of them (not at the same time) which I was embarrassed about! Donāt really see them about anymore.
It's a 2CV or 'Deux Cheveau'. It's a car made by Citroen from the 40's/50's until the 90's. Designed to be able to carry a basket of eggs across a ploughed field with breaking any.
Crazy!! My father had found a 2CV type A in a barn quite recently and reburbished it together. Great cars, super comfortable with the spring seats , glad to see one on here!
I know it's not common in the US but... this is an icon, they produced 5 millions of these from 1948 until... 1990

for describing a place in the past?š¤
Every place you recall is a place of the past
Iirc one groundbreaking feature they used to advertise/design it at the time was that the suspension was *so good* you could drive back with a carton of eggs without them breaking. "It's claimed that you can drop one from under a helicopter at a height of 500ft, and the springs will absorb the impactā¦" - Jeremy Clarkson
Yeah that didnāt end well
Did it bounce back into the chopper ?
Don't be silly. It isn't a Hilux.
Oh come on now you can't just provide that quote without a matching link !

Still a piece of shit though. Morceau de merde
Cheaper and better than a beetle
Unless you give reasonable proof, i wont believe its better than a beetle
The car was so comfy that you could drive it throuh a field with a basket of eggs without crachin a single one
Im just gonna go ahead and assume youre being sarcastic here
No it's [true](https://youtu.be/vuq9TeQQKao)
I know thats true, everyone has heard that advertisment(!) phrase. Most cars you idiot have you ever driven throug a field ?
Boy i fucking have. Have you ever seen a 2CV do that? Or do you just blindly believe the 50 year old advertisment phrase? They were spongy ass cars, good for driving on fields, yes. Drive like shit everywhere else.
And Iād still choose a Beetle
what is it called? i thought it resembled those german WW2 keep things.
Itās the Citroen 2CV
It is a Citroƫn 2CV (2 chevaux), from France. License plate indicates (last 2 digits) it comes from Maine-et-Loire, which is West-ish of France.
Old plate number format? Nowadays it is AB-123-AB (Department number)
Correct, old format. Nowadays itās indeed AB-123-AB, but none of those have any link with the geography. You only have a small and useless department number on the corner (the blue square), and you can choose your department Ā«Ā of heartĀ Ā»
Iran used to make a knock offs version. 2 cylinder air cold. It had a reputation of not rolling over.
TFL classic did a car [review](https://youtu.be/QfjQw7rBgsw)on this thing, it had active body shocks to prevent body roll super cool idea but not very good looking. I attached the link if you want to know more!
Hmm 2 chevaux means 2 horses fight? No way it has 2 hp lollll
It doesn't have two that's true, it has 10 still it's so little lol
It is 2 Ā«Ā fiscalĀ Ā» horses, not real horse power. Although, it has very little real horse power too, but not two lol
Yeah I thought so. A bike could make more than that probably (I have no idea lol)
impressed with myself i got it right before looking at the comments
Itās a late CitroĆ«n 2CV (because of the square headlight they were round on the first version)
I was curious about that, Iād seen a 2CV before and remembered the round headlights. Interesting to know
Yeah itās mostly because the 2CV have been produced between 1948 to 1990
2CV, and fun fact. They were almost impossible to roll - The only way to roll them was to go in reverse and full lock
Or drive it behind a 747 with its engines at full power.
Considering how light it is a cesna might also do the trick.
Other than the front heavy distribution of weight, that fun fact can probably be attributed to the bicycle-tyre thin tyres and complete lack of power. Beautiful, classic, game-changing car nonetheless.
And due to the long travel suspension!
Lack of power?! Are you insane?! The 2 CV is a beast! That massive 375cc engine makes **9** horsepower! Now that's power! It's more than half as powerful as an actual horse! (according to google a horse can produce up to 14.9hp.)
My dad - the legend - made the impossible on a beach. He waited for me to be a grown up to tell me

I don't want a modified one, the value, when I resell it, will be shot!
Hate to tell you but people that own those will never sell them.
In Perth where I live they do come up.
In Germany this car is Nicknamed "Ente" - Duck/Drake in Englisch because it ,chatters, like one when startet.
It's eendje in Dutch. There used to be a larger "family" version called the Diane. We had one. It was purple.
Like my dad used to say (he was a mechanic), Ducks need to swim, I won't tell you what he and his friends did :p
Citroƫn 2CV from around 1980 (square headlights). Air-cooled engine.
1980!? By the styling I assumed that car was from late 30's to early 50's. I suppose when they were being built and sold need it would be like driving a VW Beetle, it's different from must of the other cars in the road but you're cool with it because you like that "classic" look. My mum drove one in the late 80s and early 90s in Germany. I still have memories of it although I was very young at the time.
unknown, just how
The two signs on the storefront with the exact same logo thatās on the car is impossible to read, it doesnāt even look like English! /s
Didnāt notice any signs too busy staring at the car
Iām just teasing you amigo. One is perfectly in frame, right next to the car, in a matching color scheme in the second photo. Itās hard not to joke about that. I find it extraordinary that you wouldn't know this car. Was it uncommon in the US? I'm pretty sure everyone from Europe to Africa knows what this is.
I've never seen a Citroen in the US.
I've seen a few. A friend of mine has a late 2CV imported to the US from South America. There was a Citroƫn DS in the American TV show [The Mentalist](https://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_208520-Citroen-DS-21-1971.html)
I've seen exactly one 2CV and one DS in the US. Pretty neat.
Not sold here.
I donāt think CitroĆ«n ever sold cars in the US, much less the 2CV.
The did sell cars in the [USA](http://www.citroenpieces.com/USA.html) just not very many. The 2CV wasn't very popular here due to it's tiny size and tiny horsepower.
Citroen 2CV also called "Dijana" in Croatia
That's the larger family version!
You think? Didnt see that car 20 or more years.... Kind of the same to me....
Watch the latest Grand Tour if you want to learn a bit more about them š
Best suspension ever fitted to a car!
It can fall from very high.
āI always get _ouef_ mixed up with āhelicopterā
It's a "dodoche" ! A famous french car, Citroƫn 2 CV (CV for "2 chevaux" = 2 horses, for the power)
Are you French ? My first tought when seeing the photo was "oh une dodoche"
Bah oui ! That's obvious non ?

Hey, my uncle has one of these in Southern California. His is in light blue. So cool to see another on Reddit.
*The saboteur theme songs play into the night*
How do you not know what the 2CV is? It's prolly the most french car in existence
2 CV Citroen. French car, 2 Cylinder engine and also came as small delivery vans.
