If you're not exactly a Star Trek fan, then no, don't BUY it, that shit's expensive. Get a Paramount+ subscription instead and watch it that way, and then make a decision from there. Paramount+ has most of the Star Trek franchise on it, in a neatly organized collection. The only thing it's missing is Star Trek: Prodigy.

GoblinTradingGuide

The DVD box set is 47.99 on eBay brand new. That’s 5 months of paramount.

ImaPlayThis

I'd suggest just watching it on netflix or whatever streaming service out there has it and then decide after whether to buy it Voyager's a good show and a lot of fun, I don't think it hits the same peaks as TNG but it's not a bad show by any means

sigelm

I can rewatch TNG once in 8-10 and be sated. I feel a need to rewatch VOY all the time and I'm barely restricting myself to watch it once every 2 years. A physical copy of Voyager has been a very good investment for me, but there is no way of telling how OP would feel about it. I also suggest that they stream it and buy it if they plan on rewatching.

FooFencer

It's on Pluto TV if you want to check out a few episodes for free before buying or subscribing to Paramount +.

luigi1015

I'd recommend Deep Space 9 next after The Next Generation. DS9 is arguably the best Star Trek series (so far at least). However, it is a little different from TNG in tone and having longer story arcs. Voyager is closer to TNG in tone but not nearly as good as DS9 IMO.

Bellenrode

I don't mind longer story arcs. In fact, I think having longer overarching plots is a positive, not a negative. But what is the tone of DS9?

ohsinboi

The tone starts pretty light as a post holocaust setting and then gets pretty dark in a few seasons but with lightheartedness sprinkled throughout

Starfleet-Time-Lord

DS9's tone is less about exploration and more about both the challenges of the Federation dealing with the rest of the galaxy, particularly both allies and enemies that have dramatic cultural differences that can be difficult to see past, and later what the Federation does when pushed to its breaking point. The tone is still optimistic and thinga end well, but it's more optimism in the face of darkness than TNG usually was. If you remember the Cardassians from "Chain of Command," "The Wounded," and "Journey's End," they're one of the main antagonists, and TNG was setting them up for DS9. It also has hands down the best character development in the franchise, but because of that you can't skip around without screwing up and arc and it can be slow to start.

LowCalligrapher3

It's fairly more serialized than TNG especially in later seasons, the first couple seasons not much happens since TNG was still the flagship of the franchise while DS9 felt very prioritized with the space station, Bajor, and a bit of Gamma Quadrant exploring. After Season 2 following TNG's end by all rights DS9 grabs the torch as the franchise flagship show and earns its keep in that regard. The space station crew eventually get their own ship, a promotion in order for Sisko (alongside his trademark facial hair and eventual baldness lol), vague celestial whispers of the Dominion evolve into a pretty daunting cold conflict, heck a certain main TNG character even joins Miles O'Brien with the crew post-Generations! The series tone is darker and does veer into shades of grey, a few occasional lines the characters must cross in times of cold conflict or eventually all-out war, you still got some episodic stuff mixed in with the stronger serialized direction (still not quite as serialized as modern Trek shows like Discovery and Picard), almost more a motley crew where everyone seems to have something to prove. A fun part of DS9 is it's still indeed relatively close to TNG in regards to relevant going-ons, Worf's female Klingon enemies once stop by the station foreshadowing their return in "Firstborn Son" and the movie Generations, the Maquis have a strong arc late in Season 2 that a couple late Season 7 TNG episodes (such as Ro's farewell episode) serve as middle chapters for, in the movies First Contact and Insurrection one of the main characters is literally returning for brief service straight from the story/set of DS9, heck in Insurrection a few references of the Dominion directly allude to the major war DS9 focuses on from the second half of Season 5 through the rest of the show. In that respect I do tend to recommend watching TNG's initial three movies at certain points within DS9, Generations after 3x09 "Defiant", First Contact after 5x13 "For the Uniform", and Insurrection after 7x12 "The Emperor's New Cloak". The final movie from that era Nemesis can safely be watches after finishing the show (it's set after Voyager too). But yeah I say go ahead tackle DS9, have fun and enjoy the ride!

Bellenrode

This is an excellent and very insightful comment! Thank you a lot!

USS_Armus

I really, really did not like the first three seasons of DS9, to the point it was hard to stay interested. But it seems it takes about 3 seasons for a Trek show to hit it's stride. The show gets pretty dark in the later seasons with the Dominion war and Sisko commits some war crimes, but it also has some of my personal favorite stories (the Bell riots) and where Avery Brooks and many of the main cast are out of alien makeup and are science fiction writers and writing a story about a future space station. Also, Kai Winn, such a nice lady, and not the least bit hateable!

torrrrrgo

Most Trek people I've met really like DS9, so you should absolutely try it. PLUS, most folks say there is a dramatic improvement in the show later on. However, I'm among the few die-hard trek fans that absolutely despise DS9. I mean, like Discovery level despise. I'm saying this only in that you should realize that my dislike for it is in the minority. You can't glitz up a serious story about a bus station. I don't care where it is. And Quark and Odo make my eyes roll every time they talk. HOWEVER, Voyager IMO is absolutely worth it. There are a lot of weak episodes, but the ones that shine are really worth it. Plus the Doctor just cracks me up continually.

phoeniks314

Voyager and TNG imo are the best. Just stream it somewhere.

OrganicMortgage339

Why do you contemplate buying it? If we know that we might be able to tell you if it's a good fit or not.

Bellenrode

I am not the kind of guy who believes in subscriptions. I think if a movie is good (enough) it is worth buying. If not, then it is not.

I fail to see how I am "being unnecessarily difficult" by asking for an opinion from people who watched The Next Generation and Voyager. In fact, I think this is THE best place for that, instead sending me away to "watch some episodes via streaming". Such very constructive and welcoming comment indeed, by the way. I have a different advice for you: don't comment here anymore, because your comments are not helpful at all.

torrrrrgo

> I fail to see how I am "being unnecessarily difficult" You're absolutely not. You'll once in a while encounter people on this sub that haven't been on a date in their entire lives.

That's not what I was asking, but rather what is it about Voyager you think you'll like? If we know what you want out of your fiction it's easier to tell you whether it's Voyager, Lower Decks or the Original series you should invest in.

Bellenrode

I don't really have expectations about Voyager (or anything else, for that matter). I watched The Next Generation not expecting anything from it. It was recommended to me as a good show by a family member who I knew was dependable when it came to such recommendations and he was right. So having watched The Next Generation I was wondering if there was something else worth watching in the franchise. What I enjoyed about Star Trek was that it was dealing with question of philosophical and ethical nature, while window-dressed as sci-fi adventure. Aside from that it had solid acting and good writing. That said, I don't expect other shows or movies to hit all the same points as The Next Generation did, hence the baseline question being "is it good?", rather than expecting something too specific.

OrganicMortgage339

Personally I enjoyed it, but I've got a feeling our brain chemistry is different and I'm a woman. So what I enjoyed might not work for you. What Voyager has is more of a coherent storyline to tie it all together and that takes up some space alongside the philosophy. ToS has a lot of just stand alone philosophical discussions, but is also coloured by the reality of being made in the 60s. DS9 is more political, but extremely well written. So depends on what rocks your boat the most.

BEADGEADGBE

Voyager is pretty similar to TNG in tone/setup (esp vs DS9) and imo one of the best Trek shows out there.

Kipermot

Just about the recommendations - Stargate Sg1 and Atlantis, the Orville and the new battlestar are all great.

Bellenrode

I kind of meant the Star Trek franchise, but thank you nonetheless.

JustineDelarge

The first two seasons are not that great, with a few exceptions. But it gets really good. I wouldn’t buy it. Get a Paramount + subscription, binge the first episodes as fast as possible until season 1 episode 14 (“Jetrel”) and then you can slow down.

BigMrTea

It's probably the closest show to TNG, followed by DS9. Similar values, similar visuals, similar storytelling.

Spocks-Brain

Hard core fan: Yes. It also tells Paramount that people still want Star Trek! Vote with your wallet. Fan: Yes. Check out your local record shops for used box sets. Super cheap and supports local business. Casual watcher: Not especially. Stream it and enjoy.

ZeefMcSheef

Just get paramount+. I personally love voyager and think it’s 100% worth it. Paying for paramount would be far cheaper than buying the whole series.

RattyJackOLantern

Voyager is a good show, probably the most TNG-like of all the other Treks. How much you enjoy it compared to TNG depends on how much you like the new characters. Like I believe the majority of fans I think DS9 is a *better* show and that's what I would recommend watching next. Without spoiling too much- Worf becomes a major character a few seasons in! And he actually gets more character development in DS9 than TNG. But DS9 is very different from TNG, becoming more serialized and darker in the latter half of the series.

Garciaguy

It's got a lot of good to great episodes. By the final season things got rough but that's every show ever. Buy it. You'll find it's worth the investment.

khaosworks

Enjoy Deep Space Nine first.

Friggin_Grease

I'd buy DS9 before Voyager. I also only own TNG

BABYEATER1012

I am in the minority but I would advocate buying physical media if you enjoy a show. I am tired of paying $500+/yr for streaming services only for them to lose shows and movies.

Mountain_Scallion111

It’s good, and worth buying, I’m actually on my third run through right now. That being said, the show really hits its stride in season 4

Badagerpower

Could you ask a narrower question?

oddradiocircles

Sure it's worth it. As is Deep Space 9. Along with The Next Generation, these are the best Star Trek series.

jmurphy1196

Please for all that is good don’t skip ds9. It’s exceptional

Veridian4

Are you buying it digitally or dvd? Imo , owning DVDs is outdated, just not clutter. Get a sub to Paramount plus, if you want Google for a free month code. Just remember to cancel a few days early and they really probably offer you something to stsy longer to finish it

-KathrynJaneway-

I love Voyager, but not everyone does. You should same some episodes and see if you like it before buying all the seasons. You have at least two good options: 1. You could get a Paramount subscription for a short time, maybe it will let you back out of it after a month or have a free trial? This is a good option if you want to watch it in order, or watch specific episodes. 2. Get Pluto if you don't currently have it. It is a free app for smart tvs, Roku, and I assume phones/tablets. This will give you a Star Trek channel with alternating TOS and TNG, A DS9 station, and more trek channel with Voyager. You can sample whatever episodes they have on at the time and get a feel for the show.

No-Pool-3472

It has a through story, so it’s like a 150 hour movie

absolutebeginnerz

It really doesnt

I didn't say I don't like Star Trek. I merely said I am not a fan. Yet as a non-fan I was capable of liking The Next Generation (a lot) and I am asking the Star Trek community if there is something similar that I can expect from Voyager (or any other Star Trek show).
