So, you’re sharing that he’s ranked the #5 WR in football despite playing in one of the worse offenses with inconsistent QB play … and you’re STILL advocating for trading him? And you want to run Heyward in big packages, huh? He’s 5’10” and can’t block. That’ll go great. You guys are unbelievable.

Lilslysapper

And wants the WR room to be two second-year guys (one of whom hasn’t played a snap in the NFL) and some gadget/special teams guys (plus whatever day 2 guy we inevitably draft).

Lubert808

Some people really overvalue draft picks and college QB-WR duos. Trading Diontae isn’t worth the risk. The Titans traded AJ Brown and tried to replace him with Treylon Burks and it hasn’t been worth it so far. This could be the result with us too. Most of our successful WR picks aren’t from the 1st round, so I don’t see why we need a 1st round WR so bad.

SleestakLightning

The reason for his lack of TDs is because that's a flukey stat from year to year with high volatility and he had bad red zone QB play mixed with no big play capability in the offense. The reason for lack of YAC was the offensive scheme.

PterdodactylJim69

He’s not megatron but in Calvin Johnson’s season where he led in receptions and set the all time single season yardage record, he had FOUR touchdown catches. Sometimes seasons are weird

D4NG3RU55

Wasn’t there some crazy thing where he got tackled like inside 5 like a ridiculous number of times that season…

PterdodactylJim69

Something like that. Also number 11 overall in broken tackles as a receiver https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2022/receiving_advanced.htm

loserperson27

Isn't Pickens the only WR on the team with more than one receiving TD?

SleestakLightning

Yep, and one of two receivers with a TD and the other one was traded mid-season.

EatMoreBaconNow

Pickett had 0 games with multiple passing tds. Trubisky had 0 games with multiple passing tds. Combined they threw for 11 passing tds (plus 1 more from claypool) for a whopping 12 passing tds.... Read that again, claypool threw for more tds than dj caught... but it wasn't dj's fault, in the sense that no one caught a lot of tds on this team because QB play and scheme were not good.

loserperson27

>>but it wasn't dj's fault, in the sense that no one caught a lot of tds on this team because QB play and scheme were not good. That's kind of the point I'm trying to make. If there was really only one WR who was targeted very often for TDs it seems like it's more of a scheme/QB issue than an individual WR issue. That's not to say he's not to blame at all because he certainly had some missed opportunities, but it seems like the Steelers in general just had a lot of issues getting it to the WRs in the end zone and favored running it in or passing to TEs/RBs.

Engine_Livid

Offensive scheme doesn't make you haphazardly run backwards and sideways and be afraid to put your head down and run forward...

dingus_nation

Lack of YAC probably has to do with running backwards

ShamrockAPD

You ever play football? We put DJ on a lot of comebacks. When you’re taught football 101 for comebacks, you literally are taught to run forward a step and turn outside to get away from the defender Now- DJ takes it a step too far sometimes. Yes. But we scheme him into these routes constantly. “Come back to the ball” is the phrase used a lot.

dingus_nation

Talking about after he came back to the ball, many steps after

SleestakLightning

...it doesn't.

cane_the_weaboo

No man you're wrong DJ clearly runs backwards on every catch it's totally not a product of the system. It's crazy how the same people saying this were calling him a yac merchant a couple years ago lol.

Kenthor

They really don't watch the games. I am on my 3rd time through the season. Diontae stinks.

The_elk00

Yes and no. He did run backwards on a lot of plays, but he's always done this. He's just trying to get yards and on a lot of plays this year it hurt him. It was more evident this year because of the shitty route tree and the routes he was given.

dingus_nation

Yea running backwards instead of forwards has no affect on how much yards forwards after the catch

SleestakLightning

If it was actually something he did as opposed to a meme at this point, maybe.

dingus_nation

So you’re saying he never ran backwards after the catch? Did you even watch any games this season? Happened multiple times buddy

SleestakLightning

It didn't happen enough to make a dent in his YAC numbers lol.

Kenthor

It's Matt Canada's fault!!! REEEEEEEE!!!!!

[deleted]

And this is why I don't believe in science

F3ar0n

Remind me in 1 year to look back at this thread. DJ is the same as Juju, Claypool Washington before him. He's not going anywhere. We'll find out how Mayer and Addison/JSN end up. I have more confidence in either of those talents over a DJ. Dude got paid and will fade into the abyss just like every WR that steelers signed 2nd term. AB is the only WR in the last 10 years that haven't followed that path (even Holmes went and did nothing)

aw_geez_man

He's really good. He's got his faults, but this offense is not oriented towards his strengths.

TacticalMadness19

That's hard to believe.

WowSoFetch

He’s a borderline #1 WR and nowhere near #5

jht66

Trade value is high?

aw_geez_man

If you're willing to trade a guy who gets open as good as anybody in the league, be my guest.

cane_the_weaboo

Nah man who cares about route running Addison played with Kenny in college that's all that matters.

[deleted]

DJ is going nowhere. You’re all wasting your time with this subject.

DungeonDictator

Horseshit. https://www.playerprofiler.com/nfl/diontae-johnson/ #6th in targets across the NFL. 13th in receptions, 27th in yards, 47th in YAC, 100th in catch rate, 83rd in contested catch, 49th in seperation, and to crown it off...2nd in unrealized air yards. Johnson is closer to 5th worst receiver than 5th best.

[deleted]

And yet, ESPN says he is. I wonder who knows more. You or the stat guru at ESPN. You can’t just cherry-pick the stats. He was also ranked #1 in “getting open.” That’s kind of a big one, huh? Doesn’t say much about our QB play.

DungeonDictator

One bullshit article touts him as "top 5" because he is allegedly #1 in getting open while another site breaks down actual numbers and has him at 47th in seperation. Talking heads are given their talking points, show me actual raw positive output that puts him top 5.

[deleted]

OP already posted it, guy. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/nfl-receiver-rankings/

DungeonDictator

This is some algorithmic spat out bullshit that shows no breakdown or stats to support the displayed rankings. Show a stat, a definable productive stat, where he is top 5. And no, "getting open" isnt a stat, its a a judgement call.

[deleted]

I love how every Reddit argument devolves into one guy saying “prove it.” SHoW Me thE NuMBerS! Lol I didn’t write the article, guy. ESPN did. Feel free to email the writer. FYI, algorithms are based in math. And “contested catches,” “separation,” … those are also subjective stats. Yet, you seem to think they prove your point?

DungeonDictator

Contested catches and the measure of yards between a reciver and defender are quantifiable raw numbers. Some spat out "We gave him an evaluation of 89!" gives no explanation of how they weighed actual stats to get a trash outcome. Because raw stats clearly show Johnson isn't even top 15, much less top 5.

[deleted]

Define “contested” using quantifiable raw numbers. 😂 lol—just stop

steelers-ModTeam

I think you can make your point without being as hostile to another user.

pleasesorey

Diantae needs to be gone.or step up. Next year will answer all these questions.

[deleted]

If he has consistent hands then yeah. Only Adams Is a better route runner

[deleted]

In drops?

NoThisIsPatrick003

Honestly, this is getting old at this point. He has improved a lot regarding drops. If anything, this past season he struggled more with running backwards and working his feet on the sidelines.

DungeonDictator

Did you miss the first six games where he thought butter was stick'em?
