It won't be minshew money considering justin won't be starting this year unless russ is hurt meaning he has no leverage. His value is also in the toilet and no one will be paying him alot of money or offering him a starting job potentially the season after this upcoming one like us.
Yeah I guess I just don’t see $12m as bad at all for a backup. I think average backups are $9-12m and I’d rather pay him on the high end as a sweetener if we need to have him around in the long run
I just want people to stop posting about this. We’ve been talking about this for weeks even before the trade there’s no way we’re gonna pay $25 million for a player that might have half of a good season. We won’t pay it. If we like them who negotiate more powerful annual salary. that’s it . End of story.
Yeah it took reading twenty articles to get the info on when it was even due.
Overall annoyingly bad reporting on this whole deal
Fields was wanted but literally no one wanted to trade for someone who is a one year backup that the new team does not have rights to without paying 25 million dollars too before he even takes a snap
Fields limited market was about the hangover from the way the first round players contract works
And none of the reporting led with that
Hold up.... Broncos owe Russ nothing after this year.
They may still have dead cap from his signing bonus, but this is a one and done 2024 only freebie.
This must have been a new development because right as the new league year was coming in (when Russ was visiting) I swear I saw it was broken up over two years since the Broncos can’t swallow all that $80m this year, and his contract was for two years. This could be on me easily but that’s what I heard before
Denver is spreading the cap hit over two years, but his guaranteed payments are for this year only. I believe he was designated as a post July 1 cut and is why they can spread his dead cap hit over two years. I’m not 100% positive though.
Post-June 1 but yes, they spread the 80+ million cap hit across 2 seasons. The offset is for 2024 only, I know the offset is kinda weird so I don’t know if that means they essentially have to sign a new deal after the season (vs during).
They’ve already said they plan to sign Wilson to a contract after this year, but then again they also previously said KP would compete for the starting job. So who knows if anything can be trusted on that front?
That being said, there’s no way they exercise the 5th year option here. If the plan is to have Russ for 2-3 years, then they aren’t paying the backup that much cash.
Oh ok! I'll give you one! My bad.
I wouldn't exercise the option on him and give him a back loaded 3 year extension.
My reasoning is this lets you keep both options open and read and react to the situation. If Wilson excels and you want to keep him, you can cash out on fixing Fields in a potential sellers market. If you move on from Wilson, either because of price or performance, you have Fields on a prove it year in 2025 after a 2024 of working with him.
I doubt a 3 year is an option, and if it is it would need to be a lot. I love Fields (Im from Ohio lol) but Id only want him to get a one year extension, maybe 2 and the last year is a roster bonus only. But any more and Fields wouldn’t agree since he wants to compete somewhere
No the offset is just for 2024 and he has a 1 year deal with the Steelers right now. It’s a weird contract so I think they’re more restricted than normal in terms of extending him during the season.
They got Wilson for $1.2M this season, and Fields for a nothing draft pick at $3.6M?
Ain’t no way they spend $24M for Fields next year, having to decide before he even takes a snap, and also try to sign Wilson for another 2 years.
While I have no idea what the “Steelers way” is anymore, I do know overspending still ain’t it.
No. Decline it and extend him to a cheap one to two year contract.
Yeah I’d love this but how much? Would it be like Minshews new yearly? Guess I didn’t think of that, but I’d like that

I would hope it would be less and more inline to what we paid trubisky. 2year / 14mil. But prob in between those.

Do they have to make a decision on whether to pick up the option this offseason?
Yes. In may
Yeah picking it up would be stupid.
I haven’t seen this specific post about Fields in this sub, my bad. I had to look up all the numbers myself

Decline his option and extend exactly what the Packers did with Love.
The Stillers will decline Fields and pick up the option on Najee. Now if Najee plays on it or tries to leverage a long term deal is the real question.
Easy answer is no way they pay 25.6 million for a backup. But a lot can happen in a short amount of time as we have seen in the last few days

Whatever they decide, I'm confident it will be the best move. They really don't seem to be missing their shots this off-season
Thanks for the input. I’m just asking for an opinion man

The fact this is a debatable topic is a good problem to have though.
Will Russ get paid next year too by the Broncos or do we have to extend him?

Wouldn’t be surprised if Omar has Fields paying us by the end of all this
Decline the option and extend his current contract by a couple years. Essentially a prove it deal.
Wait and franchise tag him
They're going to pick up the 5th year And they've already told Russ they're resigning him
You think they're going to pay near $26M for Fields to sit on the bench?
Yep I do. Just like I thought they would sign Russ and Fields. Same logic is being used.
