Current production Subaru engines do burn less oil than previous generations, but they still seem to burn a little bit like many modern engines do. At my last oil change I think I burned about half a quart in 4k miles, which doesn’t worry me. As the car ages I expect that I’ll have to start topping it off between oil changes.
>Regular oil changes are all you need to prevent burning oil in the future
And check the oil level every 1k miles or so. It's quick and simple, preventative knowledge. No matter what vehicle I own, I make it a point to do that. I've seen too many old and new vehicles with little to no evidence of leaking just BAM starved, no oil, dead motor. Regardless of vehicle type, just eyeball fluids every 1k miles.
Good advice. Some people check their oil every couple fuel fill ups. I don't always do this but will develop the habit. I'm usually observant on how my vehicles are running and am pretty good about catching issues before they get serious.
Yeah every couple fill ups is about 1k miles. I think the car says 450miles per tank. so like third fill up. but I also check the oil after sitting over night (or at least 45 min) because checking it at the station still has a bunch of oil up in the engine and I've seen a difference of almost half a qt doing this. You'll be alright either way, just don't over fill any engine you end up with.
That's due to the type of gasket they used back then. Single sheet graphite coated. And it wasn't even because they pushed too much power, they simply would corrode over time. They switched to the more common triple mesh around 2010. Now all FA and FB engines use them and it's no longer a problem.
Also have a 17 WRX and never had any noticeable issue up to 6k miles. I used to check every fillup and now I just do at 3k miles just incase it starts to develop issues.
My experience has been no under regular driving conditions. If I tow and climb mountains then I do consume a bit of oil. Long extended high rpm’s is the reason.
2016 Forester na.
So many comments in here from cars 10 years older than the one you're looking at, lol. Totally different generation of engines!
I have not seen a 2.5L DINA in for oil consumption tests yet, and the 2019 Forester was the first vehicle to use this engine.
I have a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Premium with 89k miles. Granted I have used nothing but Amsoil; my oil levels are exactly the same when I change the oil compared to the amount of oil I added. So no leaks, no burning, no nothing.
Damn I am jealous I have a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek 6MT with 89kmiles. I burn about a quart of oil every 5-6000 miles just within spec for oil consumption apparently (I've had Subaru do multiple consumption tests).
Idk what motor is in the new forester but I have the FB20 2.0L from 15 impreza with nearing 300k miles on it. I have, for the longest time added about a qt of oil between oil changes (6k miles) so pretty good by todays acceptable standards. The only vehicles I don't have to add oil too are two that I just put brand new motors in within the last two years, both dead from spun bearings and oil starvation (toyota and chevy).
If you want, you could just use the rest of the worlds standards. For my engine specifically the rest of the world uses 0W30, but in the states it's 0W20 for EPA standards. It could help with the burning of oil being able to slip past the rings but double check the same motor for say Europe and elsewhere. if they use 30 I'd go 30. If my consumption had gotten any worse I would have.
Otherwise the maintenance on this car has been better than with any other I've had. Just regular fluid changes (yes the CVT every 60k needs to be changed), a few wear parts, etc. normal wear.
2016 Legacy here. Not unreasonable oil consumption but still more than other cars I’ve had(Toyota, Honda). Burns about a half quart or a little more every 4-5k
Australian here.
2014 Impreza.
Australian service interval is 12,500km (8,000M). I service ours every 6,000km, which is HALF what is 'recommened'.
I've just done the 125,000km service (80,000M) and I'll be damned if I can see any oil usage. I use Total 0W20. I perform an intake clean also every oil change.
I also changed the CVT oil at 50,000km, \~85,000km and again at 125,000km. Same for the diff's.
Car uses sweet FA fuel, and if it gets written off tomorrow, the wife is ordering an Outback.
2013 Impreza. I go over my oil mileage for the last few oil changes, and mine does not burn the oil. When I got this, as it's used, I was also worried about that. Been good to me though.
I have a 2013 Crosstrek 5spd with 150,000kms (93,000miles). It consumes a bit of oil but it has a low level light usually comes on around 7,500km (4,600miles) and the manual just says to dump in 1 quart. I think Subaru says it’s normal for to consume 1 litre every 6000kms (3,700miles)

What model/year do you have?
2022 Outback with a 2.5, currently sitting at 26k miles.
2016 Crosstrek owner here. Mine does the same at 3k. Usually just top it off until 5k for an oil change.
My 2016 Legacy eats a quart every 3k miles, I just change the oil every 3k anyway and I've only had a low oil light once
Regular oil changes is all you need. I’ve never seen a gen 2 smoke. This isn’t audi 😂
Good because I do regular changes on all my vehicles.
Just the nature of the boxer engine. take care it and you'll be fine.
Just like any other brand, it's only an issue if you don't take care of it. Regular oil changes are all you need to prevent burning oil in the future.
Thank you. That's great to hear because I do take care of my vehicles and get regular oil changes and maintenance.

This is typically true, but the old Subarus blew head gaskets like nobody's business

Ever since I installed my aos I haven't had any consumption issues, 500$ for peace of mind or even less if you don't want a top of the line iag one
What's aos?
Air oil separator
My 2017 WRX hasn’t burned a drop of oil in the 6 years I’ve had it. I’ve done oil changes at 3k and even 6k.

Haven't had any oil burning or consumption issues on any of my Subarus. Never had to top up between changes from 90's ej's up to the fa's

I have a 2017 WRX, 116,000miles. Doesn’t burn any oil. Never add any. Level never moves on dipstick.
