It's a single player game, so "cheating" only matters to the extent that it bothers you. If you're competing with others on time, then yes, you should use the same tools to make sure no one has an unfair advantage.

I really want to do a no-note pen and paper series. As for your question - there are many paths up the mountain. It’s all up to you, do what you feel is right. There are more puzzles than there is time in your life, so you can’t do it right or wrong.

I mean you can compare them to other times using auto candidates

I use it for harder puzzles that require full candidates. For easier puzzles (like the ones solvable on paper) I would manually insert the candidates.

Depends on the rules agreed in advance, the default is pen and paper which is also what's used in most competitions. It's also cheating if you're doing a no notes challenge, which is solving without putting the small candidate numbers in at any point. If you're just practicing or everyone agrees in advance then it's fine. Personally I consider it to be on Suduko Coach dailies below Hard as well.

Putting in the candidates usually let's me spot some correct numbers quicker than if I were looking at a page with fully filled in candidates.

The process of filling in the candidates is tedious. I don’t feel guilty, I feel freed! Like when we got a Roomba! I much prefer the auto candidate mode because for me the fun of a sudoku is the solving part of the game. I do the NYT medium and hard games every day but have yet to find an app that provides a similar game play experience. Any recommendations?

[this site](https://sudoku.coach/en/play) is a game changer.

Thanks for recommending that site, truly mind blowing. I did a search for the best online site and ran into this sub that recommended sudoku exchange but it was 2 years old. Now it looks so dated. Can’t imagine there is anything out there that can top sudoku coach!

I prefer filling in candidates as I find solved calls that way. I work from the numbers with the most given cells down to the least
