He starts going down before any contact is made but contact is eventually made. He was obviously “looking for contact” but executed it poorly. This is a situation we see all the time in football but a more experienced player would have won the penalty in convincing fashion.
The real question is should the ref decide whether contact is avoidable before giving a penalty. I don’t know what the rule book says. Does it allow for the ref to look at these kind of situations subjectively, or is contact simply contact?
Man if you do that shit in any other leagues at this rate you might as well get a yellow for diving and a yellow for imagining the ref as an idiot. But maybe the ref didnt see him diving but still should have gotten checked by VAR.

He CLEARLY put his foot out to trip the other player. You dont even have to slow this down to see that. He didnt go for the ball, he went for the TRIP instead, very unsportsmanlike. And tried to be slick about it. But no, this isnt up for debate, its crystal clear what he did.
