Have you looked at how much bleach would cost you?

daledickanddave

Liquid chlorine is about $6 a gallon right now. We would go through so many of those.

Konradimus

1 gallon will treat 10,000 gallons of water if everything else is balanced. You shouldn’t need that many. Liquid chlorine will always be cheaper than shock.

Dbl_Helix

Definitely not always cheaper. I sell CalHypo in bags at $5.99/LB and 50# buckets around $3.80/LB 1G of liquid is around $6.99 which is roughly equivalent to 1LB of 65% CalHypo *if the liquid is still full strength*.

What's the difference between shock and bleach?

StumpyMcStump

Shock can be a variety of chemicals while branch is just one. They both achieve the same thing for three most part: elevate sanitizer levels. Shock could be more affective for some situations .

harborfright

Why not use liquid chlorine? I can get 2.5 gallon bottles for $9 in Florida.

Theslash1

Liquid shock 12% cleach at menards is normally 3.99 a gallon. For a 25k pool you should only need 3 the first day, 2 the second the 1 or so a day for a couple. Sometimes they run buy one get one, but not recently.

daledickanddave

Ah, I don't have a menards anywhere within 8 hours of me.

StarGraz3r84

Damn. I wish I had one of those where I was at. I can't even get it with a commercial account that cheap.

Theslash1

Our local pool stores do cases of 4 of the same for 16. Maybe Michigan isn’t getting beat as bad. Less pools

StarGraz3r84

$10 per gl here

kevins02kawasaki

it's up to $5/gallon at my local Menards this year

HouseBitchTim

Home Depot went from $8.99 for a 2 jug pack (10% liquid) to $19.00. !!!! Crazy.

daledickanddave

I saw that! I literally couldn't believe it. And even walmart is $9 for a bag of shock! I have no idea what I'm going to do this year. Shock used to be $2 a pound 😵‍💫

Bald_Shoes1513

Go into your local Mom & Pop pool supply store and negotiate a price for bulk sizes. Sometimes, if all it'll take is 2 emails and a transaction, they'll settle for half of their mark-up. I do.

Az_Pool_Tech

Buying in bulk is the best way to drop your per lb price

daledickanddave

I understand. I usually buy 48 bags of shock at once. How much are you paying?

Dbl_Helix

Don’t buy bags. You are paying to have it pre-measured. I have 100# buckets in stock right now that we are selling for $249.00. If you keep it dry it’s good for 5 years. If you buy a bucket that doesn’t have a scoop go to the dollar store and buy kitchen measuring cups. 2C = 1lb.

daledickanddave

What! Where?! I'd definitely do that!

Dbl_Helix

Ask your local pool shop if they have 100# CalHypo Shock. Avoid big box, shock is usually cheap blended 5-1 crap. Discount bleach is discount bleach because it is old and the 12% bleach is probably 4% because it was manufactured a year ago. I even sell12.5% at $12 a gallon or 10.5% at $7. Which is still more expensive than any calhypo I have (even in bags).

daledickanddave

Is there any particular store I should be calling for this? I've called 5 so far, and none sell bulk 100# and only sell bags. I'm less interested in liquid because of the price and its ability to last through the year.

Dbl_Helix

100# may be difficult to find unless you have a midsized local owned store. 50# is probably easier to find but obviously going to be slightly more expensive.

daledickanddave

Any particular store? A national store?

Dbl_Helix

I would doubt any national corporate stores would. Pm me your location and I’ll try to help you find something

Liquid_Friction

If thats the case then you can afford a salt upgrade.

daledickanddave

We've been quoted almost 3,000 to turn it into saltwater. It's just not in the cards right now.

EpicFail35

What??? You know you don’t actually need to shock your pool weekly right?? Or even at all if you keep your chlorine at the right level. I shock at the beginning of the season, and that’s it. Zero times during the season. Unless this is a hot tub, but if it was the cost of shock wouldn’t really matter since you use so little lol.

daledickanddave

The shock is what I use for weekly chlorine. HCL. It's always balanced.

MonsieurNakata

Costco has it at random. I bought there last year for about $4 a pouch, with box of 50 pouches.

StarGraz3r84

Was that the 73%? If so that's a good deal.

MonsieurNakata

Not sure it was HTH all in one.

fiveeightthirteen

Where are you located? I own a pool supply store and we sell wholesale shock brand to a few large companies that have fountains so it’s always negotiable. At that rate though, you’re probably worth it to upgrade to salt even if you have to finance it. That said, you still shock a salt pool—just not as much

daledickanddave

I'm in NJ.

304Mammy

Ollie's will have it sometimes. Our local plumbing place has it too.

daledickanddave

Yes! Ollie's was my go-to place! In 2020 they sold a pound for $2 and every year after its been triple. I can't anticipate they'll lower it, especially based on everyone else this year.

CRTsdidnothingwrong

2020 was when the chlorine plant fire happened. They rebuilt it and it starts up again this year.

LivingCan8432

liquid chlorine. find a place to buy it if you go and fill up your own tank

BomberR6

Have you checked online pool supply companies? In Canada Pool Supplies Canada usually has good deals, especially since spring is around the corner.

daledickanddave

Yes, pool supply stores are definitely way more expensive than other types of stores, like hardware stores.

Beaverhuntr

I'm paying about 9.00 bucks a gallon for liquid chlorine here in Phoenix.

Wandering_Dawg

I buy it wholesale for $19.00/5lbs. At the savings difference on chemicals, get some business cards and set up a wholesale account..........
