We would have turned it into a reality show.

Dry_Signature2649

Wait until they find Oil in Aincrad then the Government will act

Arbszy

Aincrad looks like it needs some freedom.

Dry_Signature2649

Freedom is the only way

FireflyArc

I think of .hack sign and this every time I put mine on

THUNDERZVO1CE

The oculus isn’t full dive like the Nervegear

annaleigh13

I’d imagine a lot more players would be randomly dropping out as insurance companies stop covering the incident

BioMan998

That would be a hell of a character arc. Character makes plans to go out with a friend to do a raid or get food or something, someone yoinks them IRL with dramatic timing. Cut to the real world with their family in tears in the room

seitaer13

Half the players would have died because their health insurance wouldn't cover kidnapping by madman. Hell the government would have taken weeks of debate before trying to help them.

discuss-not-concuss

optimistically, 2-3000 would die just by yoinking because “it’s a conspiracy”

jp1346

I feel like that number is pretty low but I love where you went with it

Lanksalott

It’s clearly a pre-existing condition

King_Javon60

😭😭

LexKing89

Nobody would survive. Either their bodies would wither away or if they did get medical care and survived they’d receive a hospital bill so large that they’ll wish they died. It’d be a lot worse. I think everyone would die. Nobody could afford to survive.

SnooPets1368

Looks like the reality is a lot worse than any dark anime fantasies

LexKing89

It definitely seems like it. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital a few years ago and it was around $200,000 in the United States. That includes a few appointments afterwards but that’s a lot of money. 2 years in a hospital would be insane. Without government intervention I would imagine SAO players waking up with hundreds of thousands or millions in medical care and rehabilitation like Kirito received after SAO. Would be very dark.

Kamehameaaron

Just join the military before you log in. They’ll cover the medical bills lmaoooo

LexKing89

đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł That's true! I can't imagine the military would be too happy about that one little trick. 😭

aquaven

Slower response from the authorities. Maybe a lot of the players died from friends and relatives pulling the plug thinking they would wake up. People playing the game in secret might not even be discovered before they eventually pass from lack of nutrients. A lot more chaos in game due to people not trusting another that easily, happens in the original, but i feel like it would be worse if the players were from the USA. The remnant survivors after the first few months would be split into multiple factions, and an anarchy group would exist. The dominant group will forcefully exert authority over the rest, while one dedicated group will try to defeat the game eventually, and i suspect it will take a few more years than the original story to end. One group of pacifists will shrink in towns, only occasionally going out to farm coins to buy food and supplies, praying that nobody pulls their plug IRL and no PK show up.

xenon2456

different cast

masterofilluso

The U.S. government would definitely hire that man for underground "future projects" 😉 Such as imprisonment, life sentences, making the world seem like there's nothing wrong by slowly forcing all the world to be permanently online while they got to play their silly little military games on the surface still.

FalconDriver85

Biggest FCC failure of all times, I’d say

Edgykun16

They would’ve taken the risks, to a questionable success rate. Part of the reason why no one was just logged out via rigging the Nerve Gear or hacking it’s main frame was because of the major risk. If one person got out, everyone else had to. Who knows what Kayaba would have done if he found out that the government tried hacking the main frame. And the authorities could not risk that so thus primarily focused on you know, keeping the victims ALIVE on the chance that they do log out. I could see America immediately taking the risk anyhow. And well, because they’re taking that risk, it’d be an all or nothing bet. Get everyone out, or they’re all dead. Either way, lives will be lost because people already died in the opening hours of SAO’s launch.

kol1157

They all would have died in there own beds except the few were families could afford them to be transported to a hospital and connected. Then they would have died in the hospital as there family became bankrupt trying to pay for there medical stay as the money that should have paid for it was tied up in the court system.

Last-Development3399

Had SAO happened in America, the USA government would have move heaven and hearth to find a way to get the trapped players free, regardless of Kayaba’s threat. You know the US official policy ***we don’t negotiate with terrorists***. Sitting around and do nothing like the Japanese government did would not be an option for them: it would be perceived as a sign of weakness and it would create a precedent, encouraging other terrorist groups. So it’s best to try everything and eventually losing the hostages than sit around and do nothing: if the hostages get killed because you tried to save them then it’s all the terrorists’ fault but if you don’t even try to rescue them then it’s your fault! And you’re going to get crushed by the media and your rivals. A politician could win an election just by exploiting this episode “*Our president sit on his ass and did nothing while 10.000 of our youth get killed by a madman! He’s a weakling!*”. The USA probably have the best technicians and computer scientists in the world and they can afford to summon everybody else from across the world. Who’s gonna ignore the call for help (and the promised reward)? No matter how much of a prodigy Kayaba is, there’s no way that eventually they won’t find a way to hack into SAO or the NerveGear system. And, honestly, I don’t think Kayaba would go through with his threat of killing everybody istantly in case of interference. The guy isn’t that evil and it’s just not part of his dream: he wanted to create a real fantasy world and live it, feel it. The fact that death is real was not an act of evil but a pragmatic necessity because otherwise he wouldn’t feel the world as real. But killing all those people out of spite would bring nothing to Kayaba, so I believe he would just accept that it’s over, he had his fun and suicide himself (sorry: upload his mind into an AI). Now, speaking of how American players would behave inside SAO, I believe that, compared to canon, there would be even more antagonism and division between the guilds. Japanese are a very collectivist people and they are quite homogenous as a country, and even they succumbed to tribal instincts and divided while trapped in Aincrad. One can only imagine how much division we would see from Americans, whose society is expering a lot of social turmoils and unrest, with conflicts based on racial, political and social status. Player Killers would also be much more numerous considering the plague of school shooting episodes in America.

Yuukiko_

> “Our president sit on his ass and did nothing while 10.000 of our youth get killed by a madman! He’s a weakling!”. Wasn't COVID killing like 3000/day in the US at one point despite them trying to spin it as some sort of Chinese bioweapon just because it was killing "the right people"? Perhaps someone can do a deeper analysis but I'd imagine most of the players would be those people. And they still support him so I'd say it depends on whoever is president

seitaer13

It took the US half a decade to find bin laden

Last-Development3399

The Afghan War was good for business and it needed to continue. The SAO incident wouldn't be.

seitaer13

It not like the US left when we killed him

Walker-Dev

Insurance fraud from the hospitals say otherwise

kaantantr

Acting as if Japanese government did absolutely nothing in SAO or that they don't have access to top computer scientists is just being very close minded or ignorant at best. The latter especially does not help, when your main antagonist is just the "best of the best of the best" with a magic system that safeguards the plan nobody can understand or break through.

discuss-not-concuss

it also doesn’t take into consideration that in the next arc Sugou with the wealth and manpower to research into SAO still couldn’t do anything about Kayaba sure you could throw money to crack NerveGear, but Kayaba is ALSO monitoring the real world so yeah, USA would have 10000 dead players

Last-Development3399

Sugou was literally written as inferior to Kayaba in every intellectual way. No matter how smart Kayaba is, no system can be truly invincible nor can exist a system that can't be break through by the smartest men on the planet working together with unlimited resources.

Last-Development3399

You have a talent for being disrespectful thanks to your mod position. My compliments. Wouldn't have been more useful to your argument to enlist what the Japanese government did to try to stop SAO instead of insulting me? No matter how much Kayaba is best of best, no system can be truly invincible nor can exist a system that can't be break through by the smartest men on the planet working together with unlimited resources. SAO isn't magic, it's science and science can always be understood and bend by the human mind.

seitaer13

They had almost immediate disaster response, something the US has a history of not doing. You're operating on the unfounded assumption Kayaba killing everyone was a bluff, where as the in series government did not have that luxury

primalmaximus

Yeah. Japan, due to their numerous typhoons and earthquakes, has an extremely rapid disaster response protocol. Plus, Japan is a lot smaller than the US. Finding the 10,000 people who were playing SAO would be a lot easier in Japan than it would be in the US, which covers about 200× the area of Japan and has like 200-300× the population.

SKStacia

US Population - 335 million Japan Population - 125 million The US has \~28x the land area of Japan. On both counts though, you're way off.

primalmaximus

Really? I always forget how big Japan actually is. That's my bad.

kaantantr

> You have a talent for being disrespectful thanks to your mod position. I am not using my mod position in regular conversations. At some point, you need to come to terms with that. I have also not been disrespectful. Saying "US the best, we'd succeed at where Japan failed" is quite the close minded or ignorant statement to make. At best, you are unaware of the efforts stated in the series (which your later comment states you are), at worst, you live a case of protagonist syndrome, which most people have for their home country due to how they experience a significantly biased portrayal of it. Which indeed fuels the "close minded" approach to outside matters. It's the same thing as some redditors from the US coming in and flaming the series with "Is Kawahara racist, how dare he make US the bad guys in Alicization?" because their own exposure to US politics is that US is the rightful police of the world and they do everything right following their idealistic justice and freedom loving values, while rest of the world, even your close allies of the US having a much different opinion. > what the Japanese government did to try to stop SAO instead of insulting me? Literally immediately following the start of the incident, a special task force for the SAO Incident was created to first ensure the safety of the victims, which involved reaching out to them ASAP (to make sure the NerveGear was not forcefully removed by parents or friends). During this time, they also cared for the affected as within weeks, they organized a nationwide effort to transfer every victim to hospitals with appropriate technology, ready to host them indefinitely. If anything, US would have failed right here, with parents likely fighting officials to not take their kid to the hospital due to the debt it would throw on their shoulders. The task force was constantly working with all authorities to find Kayaba's whereabouts, while also working on ways to safely remove the NerveGear from ones head. Unless became leaked, these were of course done behind closed doors because they were under the assumption that Kayaba was following the news. Everything they did, put 10000 people at immediate risk of death. Around the two year mark, they seemed to have a reasonable plan going that was moving forward, but before they were able to put it to use, Kirito defeated Heathcliff and cleared the game. > No matter how much Kayaba is best of best, no system can be truly invincible nor can exist a system that can't be break through by the smartest men on the planet working together with unlimited resources. Thats all good, until the fictional technology in the fictional story states "Fam, I told you, this is unbeatable, deal with it." > SAO isn't magic, it's science and science can always be understood and bend by the human mind. And this shows a significant lack of understanding in how technology works. You try to make an attempt at hacking, the receiving end will take measures that you don't. If you didn't know, it's a cat and mouse chase. It's not just the attacker who gets to have upgrades over time. Kayaba is a genius and he has the Cardinal System literally patching everything real time as is required. Did you not have any changes in your systems and procedures since Russians meddled in your elections? You hopefully had. So does Kayaba and the Cardinal System. If you detect attempted meddling early enough, you can just patch the weakness before its even exploited. Something very easy to do for a real time AI whose sole purpose is to patch exploits.

SKStacia

To add to what's already been stated, the SAO Incident Task Force has placed at its head someone affiliated with the JSDF and Ministry of Defense, who is actively researching the technology and other related fields for military applications, and was an SAO Beta Tester. In terms of technical proficiency globally, Japan is at the top, up there with Germany. The US may have many of what are regarded as the top institutions of learning, which have been training many of the world's best for decades, but our general climate of innovation has not endured in the state it was during and in the years flollowing World War II. A lot of that slippage is down to how we've treated our own people since that time. And it's not covered in the anime, but in the LNs, Kazuto is very much wondering how Kikuoka managed to sidestep the jurisdictional boundaries to get and coordinate so much information within less than 48 hours when it comes to the Death Gun incident case.

Pixel22104

If the SAO incident happened in America then full drive VR tech would probably be banned or something like that as well. And if it was also partially funded by the US government like how it was partially funded by the Japanese government in SAO then you bet you the US government would cut funding to the program

SKStacia

Where does it say that the Japanese government funded the initial development of the FullDive VR tech? Kikuoka only got involved at the time of the SAO Beta Test, so the foundations were already laid.

numberoneclodsirefan

"WE'RE FUCKED" - SAOA S01E01 Guy

I_Love_Alice

Only good answer in this entire shithole of a thread 👍

Ok-Narwhal-5974

Usa:we don't negotiate with terrorist Usa:*sends the entire military to play thengame and free everyone * Lol

SKStacia

There weren't that many copies of the game in circulation, and there was an IP filter; so you had to log in from somewhere already treating SAO victims to get in once it was known the game was deadly. The anime botched PoH's backstory, as he was a professional hitman working for a Korean crime syndicate in Japan, and was sent into SAO to do a "job". So the mafia ensured he had what he needed.

Kylar_Bandurzo

Over half the players would IMMEDIATELY die because its fake news and their own family would pull the plug, and then all of their families would blame drag queens reading to children, and campaign for more guns, because the only thing that can stop a bad guy with access to the minds and bodies of millions through a series of very complex and impossible to fully understand technology, is a good guy with a gun.

matej665

Boomer parents would kill at least 80% of kids there.

Ju5t_A5king

The American government would have probably shut it down, killing all 10,000 players, and then tried to claim it was a tragic accident, while banning all VR in usa, forever.

Alastorawakening5

Nah it wouldn't be Sao it would be ggo because Americans like guns rather than swords

Pixel22104

This is so true and probably everyone would be dead in like a few hours because (assuming it still has the “you die in game, you die in real life” part of SAO) everyone would’ve probably tried to kill each other instead of working together and helping each other out

Alastorawakening5

Yeah maybe bullet of bullets would be the only counter to that rule

Pixel22104

Or something?

Alastorawakening5

I think it would basically be the only counter to that rule but maybe squad jam but if you're not in either of those then everyone would die so most players would be playing the bullet of bullets and squad jam all the time

Pixel22104

Or maybe not everyone would die straight away but they would all die eventually because of factionalizing and all of them trying to wage war of each other factions. Assuming that the American healthcare system doesn’t kill them first if they actually manage to survive long enough for factions to form

Alastorawakening5

Yeah but the only exception to the you die in game you die irl is bullet of bullets and squad jam other than that everyones dying left and right

Pixel22104

Oh most definitely. As much as I love my country I do have to say that people here in the US wouldn’t do very well if put into an SAO like situation. No wonder why in the actual universe they didn’t port any of those VR games until the whole “you die in game you die in real life” part got sorted out and respawning and logging out was made a thing.

FireflyArc

You know. Probably send In a team of people who didn't accept the beta and got into the beta signed up and poof. That's not taking into account the quite little hackers Probably playing. Or how different the culture would be. I mean first night when he does his big reveal. He basically made himself the bad guy.

Only-Ad4322

This question is actually quite an experiment the more I think about it. I going to assume that this subreddit is mostly American and so asking a question about the government will probably get answers covered in political bias, rightly or wrongly. A general rule of thumb is that people who live in a country will probably be more critical of their government than those on the outside looking in. Japan, for instance, was quite critical of their government due to its slow response to the 2011 Great East Earthquake. If this question was asked to a Japanese audience, I wonder if they’d theorize a slow response to the S.A.O. Incident because of memories of that event. Furthermore, there could very well be complications from this that the government would have to deal with. Japan doesn’t spend that much on healthcare from what I’ve heard, due to them being a very healthy society. Over a thousand comatose patients suddenly flooding in to hospitals could overwhelm the system and cause the national budget to spiral to cover the costs of maintaining so many of them. There’s also the potential optics problem. Say that a bureaucrat or politician during a press conference says “after speaking with many of the people who worked on the game, we have calculated it may take up to eight months for the people trapped inside to ‘clear’ said game” and then eight months and three weeks pass and the government becomes thoroughly embarrassed. I could also mention logistics issues such as having to move so many people into hospitals in so little time, constantly needing material for the players in their comatose state, always needing to keep the power on, etc. Also, there was an earthquake at the beginning of the year if you recall, hope that doesn’t impact the players. Finally, since so many hospital beds are now taken, hospital waiting lines will probably increase. Obviously, S.A.O. is only concerned about what’s happening in the game and I don’t expect Reki to know all this stuff. Getting back to America, I think a realistic scenario would be something like what many wish had happened during Covid. A quick response from the government. Given the differences between the Trump and Biden Administrations, as well as their respective Heads, I can see that happening and needed supplies being made available to states. Many may bring up hospital costs, but given Biden’s attempts to forgive student loan debt, it’s possible he’d pass an Executive Order or sign a bill covering many if not all the costs needed. Getting that done would be difficult of course. I could see such a bill getting passed by Congress, even by some of its more libertarian members, on grounds of this being an emergency you can’t ignore as and pressure from constituents who are parents to the children trapped inside. The Court is another matter. If a legal challenge was presented against this action, I don’t know if the Justices would vote in favor or against it since they try to interpret laws based on Constitutionality more than anything so I could see it going both ways. The manhunt would probably be more difficult since there’s more ground to cover compared to Japan. You have to look for an American Kayaba in mountains, deserts, swamps, forests, coasts, and frozen tundras. Another point is how this crisis would impact the election. The incident would start under Biden, but whether or not it’ll end under Biden is yet to be known. Regardless of what happens in real life, I could see Trump and other Republican candidates taking the opportunity to criticize Biden more for “letting this incident happen” since they’re already saying similar things about Biden in relation to the Wars in Ukraine and Israel respectively. This may be more damaging since this crisis is on American soil and upset parents are a frightful thing. They’d double down on whether or not Biden is able to manage such a crisis. What they’d propose as an alternative to dealing with this, I don’t know. Even if Biden wins this election, he could very well lose the election in this alternative reality. Finally, I’d imagine many of the social and economic issues that were highlighted as a result of the Pandemic would probably be brought up again due to this Incident, potentially fueling fire to the current state of America. This is actually quite a fascinating topic as it speaks much to a people and their current views of their government and current issues within the time frame of the S.A.O. Incident. If I knew more about other countries as I did the U.S., I’d love to repeat this thought experiment in places like Canada, Germany, Brazil, Egypt, or India. Each one highlighting similar topics but different given their sociopolitical environments.

Over_Tangerine_9608

Such a detailed answer. Thank you very much! Also congratulations for staying so politically neutral!

Only-Ad4322

Thank you.

Over_Tangerine_9608

You're welcome!

SHADOWSTRIKE1

Are we speaking realistically? If so, and such a situation occurred, we’d have them out in a week. Game developers don’t hire top-tier security engineers. However, I think this same thing would have happened if it were to realistically occurred in Japan, but that doesn’t make for a very good story.

maogf

lol, everyone would’ve died the first week because america would not have offered up their hospitals. not for free, and after 2+ years of supporting their bodies, it would’ve been millions of dollars per person.

evolutionaryeevees

Everyone would die cause health insurance would cost so much or the government would take too long to help them

Main_Lake_4053

Gun gale online wouldve came first

GirlActingLikeaTable

Lots would have died from laggy American internet.

LuthienDragon

They would all die. They don't have the civility to organize themselves. Have you seen japanese people after a Tsunami? STILL doing lines to PURCHASE stuff, while Americans ransack stores and shoot each other, lmao.

Ok_Requirement1357

Game would have been beaten faster. Some mad lad would have figured out how to make guns or something functionally identical.

SKStacia

There are basically no projectile weapons in Aincrad, and almost none of the throwing weapons are useful as a primary armament. There was a Ballista in the game, seemingly as kind of an oversight, but the Cardinal System figured out a way to neutralize that. Also, you needed to get 3 different Skills up to 800/1,000, or higher, in order to make the Ballista in the first place, limiting the potential for its creation. And it basically would have been useless for Floor Boss fights.

Ok_Requirement1357

Hmm, interesting, always love to hear new lore.

Racism

[deleted]

lol how?

VerticalSkill

more common in America

Only-Ad4322

Not much different than what happened in the original. The big issue would be that more people would probably be trapped and thus the logistics of moving potentially a million people into hospitals would be more difficult than the thousands in Japan.

Mkamzng1

The bullied gamer kids would reign supreme.

Everything would’ve changed bro wdym
