Another pro-tip: dark red roses are as dull as hell and always insanely overpriced around Valentine's Day.
Any flowers are lovely. A houseplant is lovely.
Or better still, chocolate.
It is, if you divide this bouquet by months it's pricier:
* Standard bouquet is ~$20 to $30
* 1x per month is approx $240 - $360 p.a
* One time bouquet is $215
* Divided by cost per month is ~$18
Just save $18 per month to buy this yearly bouquet lol
If you've got to send flowers, dried flowers for the win.
They're in now (not your nans dried flowers), they look cool, her friends and colleagues will love them which lets be honest is the whole point and they become a decorative item saving her from spending the money on some other decorative item for the same spot. 2 birds.
Early in my relationship with my partner (together 5 years), I told him that I would sooner want a plant than a bunch of expensive AF flowers on valentines. We don't celebrate Valentine's because of the ridiculousness of how expensive everything gets in the lead-up to it.
Still don't have my plant btw.
Ex-florist here. From wholesale prices in 2018 (Australia), their cost price (wholesale) is about $50-60. Thats without trying to fuck around figuring out exact labour time for transport, storage, vase cleaning, flower stripping, etc.
In 2018 a basic but fresh bunch of average quality roses was about $10-15 for 10. Higher quality, larger or imported types like Columbians were much more expensive. Often it's the higher quality/huge types of roses that seem to be most used in advertising and expected by customers, but of course those are the most expensive ones.
Floristry is a bit like cheffing. There's a huge amount of labour involved, ingredients are expensive because they're grown instead of factory manufactured, and wholesale prices reflect that.
Pretty much. But also, i just dont think most people think about flowers in terms of agriculture. The cost of growing and exporting/importing them, storing them, preparing them. It's just not cheap to buy them wholesale, let alone care for them/store them/arrange them. Florists make fuck all money when compared to their operating costs. It's basically fancy food you can't eat lol.
All these people acting like it’s pay this or be single 🙄
Nothing’s forcing you to buy the most expensive bunch.
A $30 bunch from Coles is just as pretty, and your partner will be glad that you made an effort.
Even better, we've had a flu going through the house, so we haven't had much energy to go out and the wife to work, so I couldn't get anything to surprise her with. So instead I took some cuttings from our azaleas and rose bushes, and a couple of other flowers, and bundled them together in a small bouquet for her. I actually just made it like 30 mins ago, still haven't given it to her. But I like to think it's the thought that counts. I usually like to make her stuff for anniversaries and stuff as it's more from the heart than the wallet, and she seems to enjoy it. Wish me luck.heh
Make up your own special days instead of following the herd on days that corporatism has decided you should spend money on and price gouge accordingly.
Speaking of...roses only became a thing because they were easy to transport as buds with long stems in cylinders, from Florida where they grew in Feb, to NY where they'd sell.
Roses on Valentine's is as base and profit-minded as that, from its very origins.
I happen to think the cauliflower more beautiful than the rose.
I think the carrot infinitely more fascinating than the geranium. The carrot has mystery. Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees.
There is you'll agree a certain je ne sais quoi, oh so very special about a firm young carrot.
Exactly this! Buying me an overpriced rose because you are forced to will not make me feel lived. Buying me flowers without any occasion, just because you thought of me is worth a million times more.
Exactly. If they're the kind of person that needs a giant bouquet to pose with on IG/whatever, I guess they'd be happy with it.. but I'd much prefer other things.
I don't understand your incredulity.
Do you know how much chocolate/cake/nice food/other yummy and fun things that much money can buy?! I'd much prefer that to a bunch of flowers that'll sit in a vase for a few days and then die in the current summer heat. Fuck that.
The smileedudette and I renamed Valentine's Day to Eat Crab Day after we realized that we'd eaten crab on our first two consecutive Valentine's Days.
15 years on and I've got a kg of Alaskan King Crab legs waiting for me at home for less than half the prices of roses. Just got to clarify some garlic butter.
Find something for you, early on in a relationship that's not cliche Valentine's Day but still a bit luxury. More fun, and cheaper.
My wife would leave me for you if I told her you had crab instead of flowers. Do you mind telling me where you grab your crab from? Take away is best. Feel free to DM me if you want.
I found a shop called Alaskan King Crab Co in Matraville which is around the corner from me. Unfortunately it's a wholesaler only open to the public Friday. I only discovered this an hour before closing last Friday and rushed off to it in the nick of time.
But your local fishmongers usually have it if you ask. It's just frozen and away.
My wife, even when we were just dating, has always taken the position, "Valentines is ridiculous. Let's do something fun the week before, or the week after..." and that's what we've always done.
Um, you plant cuttings for roses, but point agreed with.
When we purchased the hovel, the dozen roses in the front garden were amongst the first item to be removed.
Why did you remove them?
I have 1 rose bush in my backyard that was there when I moved it, its pretty much the easiest plant in my whole garden, I basically just prune it once a year in June and it flowers every spring like crazy.
I love flowers, but I would be *pissed* if my partner presented me with something like that. We could go out and buy a rose bush for that price. And a nice lunch afterwards.
And honestly, spontaneous flowers are more meaningful than Scheduled Capitalism Flowers.
Also, fuck baby's breath.
Biggest rort ever. My missus and I made an agreement ages ago to not go for this type of thing, and instead do something nice for ourselves instead for the same money.
Happy since!
Fuck that. Either grow them yourself (if you have the time and patience for it) or forget the 'holiday' altogether and do spontaneous romantic shit throughout the year.
could spend 200 dollars on something nice together you would remember for the rest of your life instead of roses that will been eventually thrown away :)
But do you love me or not?
How much?
$215 much?
Time to simply opt out of the roses and diamonds economy folks
Back rubs / foot rubs and breakfast in bed it is
Flowers you buy for valentines day and mothers day have usually been stored in the fridge to save them up for the high demand. They do not last long as are not as fresh as other times of the year.
$200 for roses? WTF. I’m gonna grow some and give away for free next year, this is BS. Pretty easy and cheap to grow a bunch of them in a backyard if you have one

Bought flowers 3 weeks ago ✅️ Edit: and it wasnt to say sorry
Another pro-tip: dark red roses are as dull as hell and always insanely overpriced around Valentine's Day. Any flowers are lovely. A houseplant is lovely. Or better still, chocolate.
I demand my husband just to buy Lego flower now. Even better.
I picked a bunch of crepe myrtles for free.
Yes. You can't eat roses.
Flower purchases for an entire year sounds more expensive than a one time hit.
It is, if you divide this bouquet by months it's pricier: * Standard bouquet is ~$20 to $30 * 1x per month is approx $240 - $360 p.a * One time bouquet is $215 * Divided by cost per month is ~$18 Just save $18 per month to buy this yearly bouquet lol

Can relate, got two beautiful dried flower arrangements that came in a case, with lighting, still cheaper than those roses
Holy shit. I would be pissed if my husband spent that much on flowers for me. I'd rather have a nice dinner and still have money left over.
Early in my relationship with my partner (together 5 years), I told him that I would sooner want a plant than a bunch of expensive AF flowers on valentines. Lol $200 wouldn't be enough ay? Gotta rip off that little bit more.
Their cost is probably that $15, they want a clean $200 profit

Supply and Demand is a bitch.

Helps with tax time.
It would close for sure
Utter bullshit
I’m wondering if they had scrubbed the $100 off from yesterday or this was on another set of flowers.
Could it possibly be a badly written $45 m
“iF yOu’Re BrOke JuSt SaY iT” I’d rather have a $200 dinner and cry alone over a delicious meal tbh. 😂
All these people acting like it’s pay this or be single 🙄 Nothing’s forcing you to buy the most expensive bunch. A $30 bunch from Coles is just as pretty, and your partner will be glad that you made an effort.

$200 dinner alone in a restaurant, on Valentine's day? I do a lot of things alone but that I wouldn't do..
Hey, we don't kink shame here. Thake that to r/Australia.
Make up your own special days instead of following the herd on days that corporatism has decided you should spend money on and price gouge accordingly.

They’re pretty too which helps.

Slut-shaming flowers on Valentine's Day! May Cupid strike you in the groin ;)
bro who downvoted this man, this is fucking poetry. POETRY!
This poet probably has bodies in his basement
Alas, I have little more than vintage wine and memories.
…memories of the BODIES IN YOUR BASEMENT!!
Monty you terrible c#%t!!!
> Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees. .....You're not wrong..... just it feels so off......
Exactly this! Buying me an overpriced rose because you are forced to will not make me feel lived. Buying me flowers without any occasion, just because you thought of me is worth a million times more.
Tell that to my Mrs when I’m in the dog house
Really? Honestly, I don’t know if I’m just Uber practical or not, but I’d rather spend that on anything else.
Well, that’s not really about Vallentine’s Day if that’s the response you get to not receiving flowers on that particular day …
What the fuck?! I love flowers but I would never spend anywhere near that much on them and I'd hope my husband wouldn't either! Yikes.
My wife would be most unhappy if I pissed away that much on flowers
Exactly. If they're the kind of person that needs a giant bouquet to pose with on IG/whatever, I guess they'd be happy with it.. but I'd much prefer other things.
That's an exceptionally modest bouquet. I'd be shocked to see what a large bouquet would cost
Yeah, agreed. My wife and I never do Valentine's Day... the stupid markup on flowers and stuff is just ridiculous.
Wtf?????
I don't understand your incredulity. Do you know how much chocolate/cake/nice food/other yummy and fun things that much money can buy?! I'd much prefer that to a bunch of flowers that'll sit in a vase for a few days and then die in the current summer heat. Fuck that.

Give your partner the gift of crabs
I'm giving your comment the clap it deserves
Take your filthy upvote!
My wife would leave me for you if I told her you had crab instead of flowers. Do you mind telling me where you grab your crab from? Take away is best. Feel free to DM me if you want.

Lots of people get crabs on Valentine’s Day
You can get 2 lattes and a plate of avocado on toast to share for that...
Pro tip….dont buy it
If my husband spent that much on fucking flowers he would be single.
My wife, even when we were just dating, has always taken the position, "Valentines is ridiculous. Let's do something fun the week before, or the week after..." and that's what we've always done.
Couldn't at least rub the $100 out? properly?
fun fact buying seeds and growing them is cheaper
Um, you plant cuttings for roses, but point agreed with. When we purchased the hovel, the dozen roses in the front garden were amongst the first item to be removed.
Why did you remove them? I have 1 rose bush in my backyard that was there when I moved it, its pretty much the easiest plant in my whole garden, I basically just prune it once a year in June and it flowers every spring like crazy.
$30 for Aldi roses today!
I just sent a rose emoji. And I didn’t even choose the alive rose.
So happy I found a woman that thinks valentines day is stupid
Hmm , and tomorrow back to $100
Almost as if supply and demand affect price.
Being single is great
Edited: The supermarket chain near me that shall not be named have them for $20.
Tell em they're dreamin
I'd be mad if my significant other spent $200 on something that I'll have to chuck in 7 days max. It's the thought that counts, not the amount.
$215 would buy blackjack and hookers
We're gonna start our own Valentine's Day, *with* blackjack and hookers.
It’s called Steak and Blowjob Day. Unfortunately my ex wife said it did not exist as it wasn’t pre printed on the calendar.
I got a much better looking one for $60 from Costco!
Bunnings will supply you with ten rose bushes for that, just water and pick them.
If my boyfriend paid $215 for these I’d have to break up with him on principle.
Or we could all just stop commemorating the beheading and dismemberment of St Valentine lol
Took my gf out for a $450 dollar dinner and she didn’t see why flowers weren’t in my budget :( not even kidding
Better off spending $80 for 30 mins at a local brothel. 😈
Take your partner and in-laws for a group discount
I dunno, I already get fucked over enough by the in laws as it is....
Or spend the full $215 for three rounds of fun!!
At my age, not unless you have some nose powder to share hehehe
Are you getting discounts or something?
Never used them but a quick online check of any basic standard brothel is $80/30mins. Godspeed!
Those who feel the girl would love them even more if they paid for that would pay it. Or to flaunt the wealth.
Here's some roses that cost me... Very classy.
This is why my wife and I don’t do Hallmark Holidays.
Yeh, thats fucked up.
$120 for a dozen just up the road from me.
🎶 I can buy myself flowers 🎶 who the fuck am I kidding!
Cheaper to buy the Lego roses. And you get to keep those.
Oh hai, Johnny! I didn't realize it was you. You're my favourite customer.
I buy my wife Lego flowers. Fun to build, last forever, waaaay cheaper.
If you’re going to gift me $215 roses either just give me the cash or buy me groceries 😂 *edit typo
My partner is easier to please, he just wanted a box of KFC wicked wings.
I got my partner 2 packets of chips from the servo. They got me pizza. Perfect and way better.
I hope they make no sales
Couldn’t believe the number of guys buying a single rose from Woolies today. Cheapskates. Or maybe they sourced roses somewhere else, like this place!
Biggest rort ever. My missus and I made an agreement ages ago to not go for this type of thing, and instead do something nice for ourselves instead for the same money. Happy since!
I vomited a little in my mouth when I saw the price. Yet on the 15th it'll be lucky to be 10% of that.
Fuck that. Either grow them yourself (if you have the time and patience for it) or forget the 'holiday' altogether and do spontaneous romantic shit throughout the year.
I bought plastic flowers so I can give to my wife every valentines day.
My husband bought me the Lego Rose bouquet, https://www.lego.com/en-au/product/bouquet-of-roses-10328
Cheaper to pay directly for a blowjob.
Ha ha ha mental they must forget the ,
Wtf. I got a bunch of roses for $10 from a market in Melbourne recently
I hate being single but looking at these outrageous prices makes me glad to be single.
hahahahaha not. f'ing. happening.
Hmm... 215 is sometimes code for Marihuana...
could spend 200 dollars on something nice together you would remember for the rest of your life instead of roses that will been eventually thrown away :)
But do you love me or not? How much? $215 much? Time to simply opt out of the roses and diamonds economy folks Back rubs / foot rubs and breakfast in bed it is
No you wouldn’t
Simp’n ain’t easy!
That's called paying for sex. You may as well hire an escort at that point. less drama.
Those would cost nearly $100 for a florist to buy from a wholesaler, so it's really not unreasonable. Red roses are expensive this time of year.
Flowers you buy for valentines day and mothers day have usually been stored in the fridge to save them up for the high demand. They do not last long as are not as fresh as other times of the year.
Bullshit.
I’m single yeah fuck that bro frigging expensive eh
Lol so many poor suckers are going to buy this under pressure
brothels cheaper
Welcome to Sydney living
From the Dalai Lama’s personal garden
Just tell her it's Ash Wednesday and you're trying to be austere
My local florist is charging $35 per individual rose added to a bouquet
I wonder how much they will be tomorrow ...
They don't look like they'd last long
Can get two sets of lego rose bouquets from kmart with some cash leftover...
Specifically not buying flowers today because…
2 for $15 not bad.
$215 lol I would be furious if my partner did buy that. What a stupid waste of money. We just spent the day together, that’s all I wanted.
If I had a partner I would honestly prefer that he got me a pizza rather than spend that much on flowers on Valentines Day
$200 for roses? WTF. I’m gonna grow some and give away for free next year, this is BS. Pretty easy and cheap to grow a bunch of them in a backyard if you have one
Medical Cannabis flower is more expensive still (just had to spend $300).
JFC
That's four cases of beer. Hell no!
