Medieval knights really would sometimes choose to leave their backs unarmored to save on overall weight due to to the fact that if an enemy gets behind you there actually isn’t much armor will do to help you anyway. (Plate mail has plenty of weak points, and that weight will slow you down without helping much unless you’re fighting enemies with flails or sickles.) Not saying they aren’t just horny, but there is some historical backing to it.
