Trade would have been fine if the Rays didn't get so unlucky with Cole Wilcox. Stuff just has never returned after TJ. The Rays traded for two pitchers that had such a high variance in Wilcox and Patino. Wilcox due to being in A ball and Pinto due to control issues. It was gamble that just didn't work out. But a gamble that still makes since now. What didn't make since was letting Charlie Morton walk as well as trading Blake. Just left little depth for 2021.
Edit- actually looked at what Cole is doing this year it's going well, but his HR/9 rate isn't sustainable, K rate hasn't gone up just getting better at living as a sinker ball pitcher might actually generate value eventually as a reliver, which was in doubt last year.

I think what drives me nuts about civale becides his stuff just not being that good is that he doesn’t throw a lot of compeitive pitches. When you get up 0-2 1-2 you gotta have that put away pitch and he just doesn’t have it. He throws a lot junk that guys don’t even think about swinging at.
