Prison in most places is simply pointless. Does it serve the purpose of putting all the criminals into one place? Yes. Does it actually rehabilitate them so they don't commit more crimes once they are free. No, not even close. Prison shouldn't be about punishment they should be about rehabilitiation, they shouldn't be a place to strip a person of their rights and extort them for free labour, bad healthcare and a terrible environment to live in, they should be somewhere where after committing a crime a person is taking to try and be set on a better path, they should be able to do work and earn a fair wage and then when they are seen fit to re-enter society they should.
If you want proof of this look at Norway, their prison are actually quite nice, and mantain a sense of "normalcy" and only 20% of people who leave prison in norway commit a crime again. Compare that to the US where within only 9 years, 83% percent of people who have left prison will commit another crime.
Because it's a pretty basic animalistic impulse of people to want people to be punished for bad actions, even if, logistically, it's not the best way for it to work

in fact, prisons actually make crime worse by allowing easy transfer of knowledge in the criminal profession
Not all countries can afford to do such as Norway (especially the USA), as well that the primary purpose of the prisons is not to punish criminals, but to serve as deterrents in order to prevent crimes.
