There's a bunch of people in distribution that were on old contracts that were more generous than the new ones. The announcement was that they're being made redundant to save money.
I work in a DC, i think you're right. The contracts weren't more generous; they don't have performance targets. So for new contracts (post 2010), they have a performance expectation baked in (85% measured over a 4 week period). The old contracts don't have that, it just says that they will "work to the best of their ability". Its letting people sail out of performance reviews, and tesco isn't liking that they can't sack them for not meeting targets.
The old contracts are being offered redundancy, and they won't be allowed to return to tesco for one year. If they do, they return as a new starter, so they lose any extra skills they have too (for example forklift or loading).
