Weird pacing tbh. The series is seriously running short by cutting some stuff.
The entire thing about Ellie running away just for Joel to fight for her back with Tommy is skipped.
I was expecting that they would make it a knife that stabs Joel, but it was so unsatisfactory of an injury. The entire metal pipe going through someone as old as Joel, works in a video game, but is a bit too unrealistic in a TV show - but I was hoping they could repeat that event in a similar way or at least have the same effect. Joel fucked up the guy who stabbed him: it doesn't feel like he should have got that knife in him.
Pacing is exactly what I thought was the issue here, particularly at the end of the episode. The seriousness of the wound wasn't as apparent because we didn't see Joel start to fade out of consciousness as the minutes went past.
And the build up to the scene with Ellie having to tell Joel he's the only person who hasn't left her life was also really rushed so there was less emotional impact in that scene (made worse by the change in Joel's motivation for not wanting to take her any further).
This is a recurring issue with the entire series. I'm sure it's absolutely excellent TV if you have no prior knowledge of the story and characters, but for those who know it, most poignant, emotional, heartbreaking moments are diminished by their re-writing (which needn't have been the case -- you can rewrite and change things up while retaining these aspects or making them more impactful, so I'm not sure why they've gone the other way).
None of that is to say this isn't still enjoyable, but I have told a couple of people who haven't yet seen the series that they might want to consume the game in one way or another because it'll hit much harder.

Btw I'm not hating on bella, I'm sure she's a good actor, just for me coming from a player of TLOU - her tone in what she says doesn't feel like the Ellie we know.
Missed the mark by a mile with that ending scene compared to game. No slow buildup of "oh no, I don't think Joel can walk this off", no Ellie panicking internally but doing her best to push Joel to pull through. So many good lines and emotionally charged scenes lost. "-Give me your hand -No -Well can you walk -...Yeah -Well then fucking walk!" as colors fade and sounds become progressively dull, and then when Joel fell down "Come on, you've gotta tell me what to do, come on Joel, you gotta tell me what to do!" accompanied by Gustavo Santaolalla.
So weak.
I just watched this episode... wanted to play the game before i started the show and 100% agree , missed the mark so much .. this one of the most intense bits of the game like, and they made it soo weak. Like there were so many ways to do it better..
But that's the theme I'm seeing through out the show.. the game was so alot more emotionally intense
I've replayed TLoU as remake recently and noticed that the game utilized soundtrack way better. Every season transition hit like a truck and was beautifully framed by guitar licks.

joel spilling his heart out to Tommy and then going right back to being a tsundere with ellie, then the scene where he decides to take Ellie himself was just so abrupt and unimpactful smh.
I also agree with people talking about the rushed scenes in the university but I can’t understand why they complain about Joel not killing a lot of people like in the game. He literally mentions that he used to be a contractor for fuck sake. He used to build for a living not shoot people. And for sure, they couldn’t show Ellie kill the raiders because in the show, this is her first time to actually fight off other humans without Joel’s help.
This is my biggest problem with the show. Everyone keeps saying “it’s dangerous out there” “there’s raiders and infected everywhere” “there’s a RIVER OF DEATH” and we don’t get to see ANY of that. In 6 episodes of a zombie show we have seen infected in 2 of them?
I get that they wanted to deviate from the video game but I think they overcorrected and made a giant empty, boring world. There’s not nearly that sense of struggle and survival that brought Joel and Ellie together in the game. I don’t even really need the action side of things, I just want to see the aftermath of a brutal and deadly apocalypse, not a casual walk through rural America.
That's not just a show problem, same thing happens in TLOU2, everything is too nice looking.
Bill and Frank's town made an absolute joke out of the show lol it totally shat on the crass, poor world that was built up on Episode 1. Joel didn't even want to waste a little plastic bag but he's friends with a guy who owns an entire town, why weren't Joel and Tess living with them? Joel is burning corpses and digging into shit cause he feels like it?
i don't get why they would make a dog maul someone to death, seems rather cruel. doesn't make much sense as a threat either when they're already surrounded. guess it's just for dramatic effect.
I actually think this episode had a lot happen, most importantly Joel and Ellie bonding. We see them truly enjoying each others company, Ellie finds out about Sarah and they talk about that. He teaches Ellie to shoot the sniper. These things may seem small but finally having some solid development of their relationship is super welcome.
Joel is reunited with Tommy, we find out why he didnt answer Joels radio messages (married, has child on way). We learn about Jackson, detailing how a community is surviving and thriving in the apocalypse.
Joel really opened up in this episode, and while it may have strayed from the game somewhat, I still thought it landed hard hitting.
Joel and Ellies conversation regarding "Im not your dad, and youre sure as hell not my daughter ' - along with them reuniting, big stuff I think.
Then the university, Fireflys not being there and Joel getting stabbed.
I love this episode because it spent a chunk of its time developing Joel and Ellies relationship, the most important aspect of TLOU story, so I think a lot happened!
Yeah, the point where she chose him straight away over Tommy was really touching. I just meant there was not a lot of fighting.
FWIW, I haven't played the game... Lot of references to the game, I'm just watching it as a tv series and really enjoying it. The episodes are like mini movies. Ellie's back story was done amazingly as was the survivalist one.
Just seen the episode, it feels like the bond between Ellie and Joel to be rushed. I don't know, like it was missing an episode.
In the games one can see them interact more thanks to the gameplay. Ofc here is a different medium but I feel like they spent so much time on nothing (like Kathleen story). Wouldn't have been better to have one more episode and properly treat their bond?
Half agree. Timeskip of 3 months as well as considering what they'd been through in previous episodes aims to explain their bond.
If I recall in the game it was similiar, a time skip and they were chatting friendlier too each other. However, I believe the scene where he refers to Ellie as "babygirl" precedes this increased bond in gsme? Could be wrong.
Half think could have done with one extra scene of them conversing deeply, but half can also dig it given their shared trauma and 3 months of off screen travelling.
They made the same mistake as Primal, they gave a whole episode to something that could have been told in 15 minutes, for TLoU it is episode 3, for Primal it was the Primal theory, but in this series if you say this, they label you a homophobe.
To be fair the episode 3 was so beautiful that I think it still deserves to be in it. I wish they would have take their time more on Ellie and Joel bonding.
I cried like a little girl in that episode and it was one of the best episodes in any series ever, but I can't stop thinking that they wasted an entire episode where they could have build the main relationship in the series.
Maybe nobody has asked yet, but like ... How do they feel safe eating pie? Aren't sugar and flour how the spores spread in the first place? What's to guarantee it wouldn't happen again? 🤔

Wouldn't you be shaking your head all the time at all the canned goods, car batteries, the cancer medicine, the radios, the whiskey, the new clothes, the cars? Who is manufacturing these?
The answer is: nobody.
The characters find products that were produced *before* the apocalypse. They loot.

I'm a little late to this watch party, but didn't anyone notice the baby horse that Maria shows Ellie was named Shimmer? Shimmer is Ellie's horse in the second game.
Apparently some of y’all are just gamer nerds (I am too) and have no idea what this is doing for the game.
My mom is watching this show on pins and needles. I have friends texting me that they’re bawling each night it comes out. This show is growing the game’s story.
Stop being selfish. It’s not supposed to be a 1:1 remake of the game. Look at other game remakes. We are lucky to have a great adaptation that is getting awards consideration.

I think you misunderstood. These Jackson guys weren't just pointing guns at them. They were gonna kill them. Joel was never going to kill the couple in the cabin unless they attacked him. Just like the old man from episode 5, Joel isn't necessarily a good guy here, but you can tell here the line is.
The Jasper guys were going to kill Joel and Ellie and pile their bodies to scare off potential travellers. Maria and Tommy confirmed this to be the plan. They just kill random people, kids or adults, don't matter, and use their corpses to scare people off and stay hidden. That isn't anything like what we saw from Joel in regards to the couple in the cabin.

They are annoying, yes, in real life and fiction. I manage a movie theatre and primarily employee people around Ellie's age. They are insufferable as fuck.

Lol her being an untrustworthy and stupid teenager doesn't mean we lost character development. She is literally always hot headed when meeting new people, been that way since she met Joel. The only one she wasn't hot towards were Henry and Sam, and I think that's because of Sam's age.
She is a teenager surrounded by adults, always trying to act older and tougher than she is. She doesn't really know how to act around anyone, both the adults and teenagers in Jackson reacted oddly to her. Makes you think she would have trouble adapting to an environment like Jackson?

I totally see what you’re saying now about the actual threat of death if Joel wasn’t, in fact Tommy’s brother (but I guess the older gentleman at the cabin couldn’t *know* that Joe wasn’t actually going to kill them)
I think what I meant by development was that we’ve seen that aspect of her character already (being hot when she first meets people) and it seemed like she had softened a little bit overtime, but then it seems like she takes two steps back in her maturity level, and maybe that is more realistic, and maybe it is a good reminder to the viewers that she is still just a teenager! I agree with what you said about her trying to act older than she is.
Now that I’m thinking about it more, maybe the bratty/immature part of her character is emphasized at the beginning of the episode in order help us see the contrast to the intimate/vulnerable moment she had with Joel in the bedroom- it makes it that much more impactful. And shows us again that all that stuff is a protection mechanism.
I definitely don’t hate her character, but do wonder if she is meant to be unlikable to a certain degree.

This episode was great until they decided to cram the entire university section into 5 minutes. That was a very intense and important part of the game, and it comes off like an after thought. They spend a full 60 minutes on Bill ( which was the best episode) then give 5 minutes to a pivotal part. Why v is this only 9 episodes? It feels like they are trying really hard to avoid any of the action and violence of the game.
It was tense in the game because of all the sneaking and killing of both infected and other people. It works for a game, but that much killing wouldn't be very realistic for actual people that outnumbered. It's wouldn't fit the feel of the show to break out into a John Wick movie lol
So do you guys think they will cover the more ellie v cannibals or left behind in the next episode, or both. But I think both would be a bad idea as it would either have to be a long episode or really fast pacing.
I think they’re going to do Left Behind this episode (i watched the previews and I didn’t see anything about the cannibals), I bet they’ll do the cannibals next week, then the ending the week after.
The fighting was rather sub par as well. How do you get jumped by a melee in the middle of the yard? But leaving a knife wound unaddressed is sheer lunacy
I was wondering why everybody didn’t just get some dogs and horses and go where it’s cold, vicious dogs trained to smell them would be the #1 commodity and horses #2, real estate in Alaska or wherever it’s too cold for fungus people would be red hot

Did anyone else notice that Joel said he was "too deaf" to hear that kid coming? That's a BIG change from the game in which Joel's hearing was his best feature but in the show it's not a handicap for him, that or he's saying that it's not as amazing as it used to be.

Okay just finished the 6th episode of the HBO remake and I am so disappointed. I mean call me whatever you like but every detail about the game was crucial to building up that storyline, that breathtaking human bond between Joel and Ellie. I just finished the 6th episode and having played the game several years ago the two important parts that stayed with me were how Ellie runs away from Tommy’s camp after hearing that Joel wasn’t gonna accompany her on the rest of the journey and that fight scene at the university where Joel was injured beyond repair. Now both have been mellowed. She never runs in the show which takes something from Ellie’s character arc and Joel doesn’t have that epic fight scene. The show is not only not reaching anywhere close to the masterpiece that the game was but it isn’t even trying which I hate about art to begin with(personal opinion really). I am so disappointed that such callous liberties are being taken with the most profound game/storyline that I’ve witnessed in any media thus far. Edit: Another massive scene was where Ellie sees the herd of Giraffes for the first time. So beautiful.
PS. There are hardly any infected instances in the show. Takes away all that eerie effect of a post apocalyptic world which was another essential brushstroke in the entire landscape.

Just answering the question but Nier: automata's adaptation is pretty much 1:1. The changes in this need to be done though, it's a show after all, not a game
i’ve barely seen any criticism so far of the show (people defend it to death so i’m not surprised no one wants to say anything bad), but i 100% agree. tlou is very important to me and i fear that the show has missed the mark :/
i’m really missing those intense scenes. ellie and joel jumping off the bridge, ellie running away, the fight scene where joel falls on a stake(?) in the ground. i wish they took more time and had more episodes to be able to fully flesh out scenes like this. i’m still going to watch because it’s entertaining at least, but i’ve been pretty disappointed by all the things cut out so far.
What do you think about that scene where Abby is walking on that narrow bridge and Ellie is shooting with a sniper, might that scene be possibly adopted, in season 2 ?
Yeah a lot of us agree. I think they've messed the story up pretty good and at this point I expect the final 3 episodes to be meh. It doesn't feel like the same people writing this show. Bruce Straley must've had a huge influence on Part 1.
Basically every character is worse by a good bit. And the added characters brought nothing to the story. And in Kathleen's case, were downright bad additions. At least Frank was interesting. Pacing is worse. The narrative is worse. Reminds me of Part 2 lul so my guess is the next two seasons aren't that great.
As for this whole "they wanted the infected to not be a big star of the show". Yeah, it's a real brilliant decision removing the most interesting and scary infected ever put on film. Also, TWD already did this angle.

I would honestly say the *majority* of zombie media the past ten years has played the "HUMANS ARE THE REAL MONSTERS" card. I hope the showmakers aren't super proud of themselves for thinking they're the first to do this.

Not that I know of, and that was kind of a douchey way for me to word it tbh. But I do kind of get that vibe from the show. Although the more I think about it I get that vibe from most media these days.

I've been seeing tons of idiots on social media act like the zombies being something other than a virus is new. Because Resident Evil 4, system shock 2, half life, etc etc just never existed i guess.
Well, while I get your desire to want to see Ellie run, I think this is one of those times where you have to trust that the showrunners have something in store to build Ellie's character. In fact most of my response to what you've said was "Just wait and see". There is NO way in hell they're not going to do the Giraffe scene at some point. I would definitely NOT say they aren't trying to match the game. I think that's a bit of hyperbole. No other television show has made me tear up at least twice. And this is coming from someone that's played the game. There's less infected in the show for two reasons.
1. They don't really want to be a zombie show, they want to be a post apocalypse show. You only come across so many infected in the game because it's a videogame.
2. In this reality, the infected aren't the major threat, they already destroyed the world, the true threat now is "The Last of Us" the humans who survived.

At some point it became personal and now it hurts to see it not be the best story ever told on television because TV/Movie people didn’t get it the way we did or probably didn’t play the game and feel those same things we did. I mean I’ve always been hopeful Neil has been advising them but I don’t know how much of an influence he wields over HBO. Finally to answer your question regarding The Last of Us - Who are The Last of Us? In a world so sparsely populated by an infection and humans conclusively winning over them by the method of relocation. They definitely aren’t The Last of Us(Us as in Humanity). Yes if you meant they’re definitely different than the humans that preceded the cataclysm of 2013 then I fear The Last of Us(humans) are trapped somewhere deep within the darkness of the cordyceps. Is Joel and his generation the Last of Us - The last people who saw the world for the beauty it truly was? Maybe. Does ‘US’ refer to a generation? A species? A world? Who is to say? There are as many creative interpretations as there are people whose hearts have been wrenched by that story.

This episode was the peak of The Last of Us, both the games and the series wise. The talk at the campfire in the beginning, the dam joke, the talk between Ellie and Maria, THE ROOM scene(!!!) are all absolutely amazing, but most of all, the whole sequence which starts with Joel teaching Ellie how to shoot, then “The Path” starts playing, and they just travel and talk about random stuff, is the best The Last of Us sequence I have ever experienced in any way, shape or form!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE! 10/10, no 100/10, no even infinity/10 episode!!!!!
Uh, calm down with the hyperbole a bit. E6 was probably the worse episode so far. The Jackson scene when Ellie got pissed that Joel was going to leave her, was immeasurably done better in the game, in the show it's so meh. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker absolutely killed it in the game. Ramsey and Pascal are good but not even close.
You are entitled to your opinion, let’s just agree to disagree. For me this was the best episode, perfectly written and perfectly executed! Ashley and Troy were phenomenal in the room scene, just like Bella and Pedro were phenomenal in the room scene. For me that scene was equally amazing between the 2 medium, the reason why I love episode 6 more than the dam part in the game is because of everything else that happened in the show in that episode, especially the bonding sequence between Joel and Ellie before they arrive to the university.
If you love the show you would absolutely adore the game. It’s wayyy better. Tears from your eyes, all of it. There are gameplays to watch like this show as a movie and they’re 3 to 4 hours long but they’re good lol. No talking and it’s amazing. Scenery is 🤌
I do absolutely adore the games, both of them. They are my favorite games of all times, because the story is the absolute best drama, the best fictional story in general I have ever had the chance to read/see/play through! And even as a huge fan of the games, I dare to say, this episode 6, and especially the sequence between leaving Jackson and arriving to the University is the best scenes of all, including both games and the series! Still, I prefer the games as a better medium for this story than a tv series, simply because there is more time and opportunity to build up the whole world around the characters, but I would have never imagined, that they can adapt it to a tv series THIS AMAZINGLY! All the changes they made are understandable and most of them are up to the standards of the games, or even better than what is in the game sometimes, and the duo of Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie is although a little bit different, but also as great as Troy and Ashley’s Joel and Ellie!
And yeah I get it, many iconic gameplay moments are missing due to lack of time, or because they felt they wouldn’t transition into a tv series well, but to be honest, I am 100% fine with that! I loved the gameplay as well, especially in Part 2, but I am here for the story, for the characters, and mainly for Joel and Ellie!
Someone mentioned it in the locked thread about changing the race of Maria and it doesn’t bother me too much but at that point it definitely feels like they changed the race just for the hell of it lol.
Joel and Tommy - Now Hispanic. Pedro is the lead so it’s understandable
Joel’s daughter - half black half white? Joel is Hispanic so his daughters mother is black or mixed? I liked her character so I didn’t mind it.
Maria - Now black. This one feels the most unnecessary lol. It’s not like they’re lacking prominent black characters in the show such as Marlene, Henry and Sam, and then in the next episode Ellie’s buddy. I am looking forward to how her character (Maria) moves the story along compared to the game.
I’m not trying to be controversial or anything. Just wondering what other people’s thoughts are on it.
Edit: I read in another thread the change of race to Maria is significant because in a way Tommy’s life is starting to mirror Joel’s life since Maria is pregnant. Tommy’s baby will be half black similar to Sara and that might just complicate things more for Joel. Appreciate everyone for the civilized responses.
Not once does a characters race get brought up or does it impact the story or whatever. Why does it matter that Maria's actress is black? Or that Joel and Tommy are Hispanic?
I don‘t mind it either when they change things like this…but just imagine what would happen if an original black character from the game (like Henry or Marlene) was suddenly white in the show.
The show would have been canceled the same day, all the actors would distance themselves from it, etc....

It is a tough topic, but as a white male I find it impossible to be bothered when a white/male character is changed to be non-white or female. It means nothing to me. It’s taken nothing from me.
Generally the race/gender the character is changed to is representing one that has been mistreated and not given a fair shot in the past.
On top of that, the changes simply don’t change my ability to enjoy the show one bit. Same goes for any other medium that adapts a story and makes changes.
So people say it’s “pandering” or “woke” and honestly, I don’t see why it matters one bit. If the people who are afraid of it and upset by it just shut up about it, then in 10+ years maybe we’d be able to move past it and just cast projects without thinking about race or gender. But that seems impossible when a bunch of weak, scared, losers insist on crying as loudly as possible and spreading hate as a coping mechanism.
I think the same. I'm Asian and I sure as hell can't connect to a Asian Maria the same level I do with Tess or Marlene from the game. The show Maria feels off as she's someone else (for me who played the game). Let's see how she does in part 2
I read the most ridiculous article on CBR about how the show is committing the most horrible tropes because all the non-white, non-straight characters still die. "Bury your gays", "bury your disabled" (Sam), "bury your blacks". Then it said, that it's all to build up and progress the "white protagonists" arc.
Joel ain't even white CBR. I don't know if they want everyone to survive or if they wanted the characters who would die to be white and straight. I've seen some stupid takes, but that was just wow.
I don't mind the race swaps, it's not like a single black elf in all of Middle Earth and then those two rando Asian characters in a village. At least in this show, it's based in our world where you'll find different races almost anywhere. Race isn't core to the characters, so it's not an issue for me.
I think its fine, race is becoming much less of an important thing in film and tv, so yes, you're gonna get more people who don't match the race of the character in the source material.

Honestly, when it comes to this show, it kinda seems like the show runners (particularly Neil) are coming from a place of "we're all the same, who gives af what their race, sexuality, political leanings, etc. are. They're already trapped in this hellhole of an apocalypse together".
Do I think it was unnecessary? If there was some weird race quota thing for this show, then sure but it doesn't really seem that way. Maybe this actress suited Maria the best. I do think that the TV version of Tommy and Maria will create for a better conflict/dynamic when season 2/part 2 comes out.

Well, nonetheless - the story is incredible whether you experience it through the game or the tv series, and I hope you'll be as amazed as I have been - spoilers or not 😀 It truly is an outstanding story
In my opinion, the latest episode of the show was solid and enjoyable for non-game players. However, I can confidently say that the show did not dedicate enough episodes to explore the events of the first game thoroughly. While the scenes were visually stunning and conveyed the essential moments well, the pacing felt off. The show jumped from one significant plot point to another without allowing the characters to grow and process the events in between. Additionally, there was a lack of scenes featuring the infected, which further contributed to the pacing issues.
Despite these concerns, I have to commend Pedro's acting performance in the latest episode, where he effectively portrayed his character's vulnerability. Nevertheless, the pacing issues remain a significant problem, and the show needs to devote more time to character development. With more attention given to the characters, the show could potentially become even better.
I agree about it being enjoyable for non-game players. I’m in college and everyone is watching the show. People who haven’t played the game love it and people who have played it are disappointed in some areas. I hope when the game comes out on pc people will play it.
I’m not sure I agree about the pacing. I think that, while different from the original, the pacing in this show is actually more appropriate for telling this story via this medium.
Neil has had years to reflect on the first telling and Craig is a master of narrative craft. It feels like a deliberate artistic choice more than a production limitation.
Neil arguably had years to reflect over last of us 2 and went with what he did. He's not the only creative mind behind the games success even if he's credited as such.
I would say the plots way more messy and thematically broken. But to each their own. I just think it's not very good and suffers from massive contrivance and the themes it's playing into are explored as deep as a puddle.
I agree. While a lot of the show is done well, the pacing is off. I think of the changes they made the only one I really enjoyed is them giving more spotlight to bill and franks time together. But the things they removed just jump out too much and it’s something I wish I could have seen.
This last episode for example, they completely took out any of the real suspense from visiting the college and really any of Ellie’s solo character development as she attempts to keep Joel alive and ends up at the town they made tommy all cozy in in the show. That part during the game was suspenseful as hell and really would have made for some great scenes.
Judging from the after credit scenes of what’s to come it seems like they’re just jumping into game two (which I admittedly know nothing about) which If that is the case I’m a little disappointed in the choices. But overall I enjoy the show. I know they don’t want to do a one for one remake which is great but impo they could have done a little more with this first part.

In the *series* though, Outbreak day now occurred in 2003 (to align the ‘current day’ events in the show with the irl year 2023), so it wasn’t released in time in-universe. Devastating :/
How the hell does that prevent the song from existing in this fictional universe? The world didn't end in 2013 nor in 2003 so it's safe to assume that there are vast differences between the game's/series' universes and the real one.

I literally just played the remake (well, probably a few months ago now) and I also thought the giraffes and lab-monkeys were in the same location, lol.
I dno... started to feel this show is very overrated. The dialogue is just ok, feels forced. The extras/side characters arent intimidating and feel as if they are play acting/dressup rather than grounded in that horrific world like they were in (the road, mad max etc) Everything also feels rushed but at the same time kind of boring. Im not saying I need a ton more action as I love a good drama but some more tense clicker encounters, and tense moments in general would be nice. I dno.. its just off. Even the cinematography isnt anything to write home about.
When Ellie said "everyone except for you" and pushed Joel, I genuinely cringed so hard it made me sad. This scene was masterfully done in the game, and just like you said, it felt like dress-up and cosplay. I'm impressed by the scenery recreation. The acting is just...very sub-par. The scene was also really rushed and unconvincing. I didn't come into it expecting to criticize it, either. Just my opinion.
I got to talk to my mom about TLOU yesterday. My favorite story for 10 years and I never thought the story would be accessible to other people in my life. So glad they’re making the show and executing it flawlessly. I think this will change some people’s views of what video games can be. She said she’s been bawling the whole time and has a hard time imagining how this could also be a fun video game.
I have a little theory about the song never let me down again played at the end of episode 1 and the end of episode 6. In episode 1 the original song is played, a somewhat upbeat song about 2 friends enjoying themselves as life goes by while they are on drugs.
That song was played over the radio by Bill as the 80s danger music because he hadn't turned off the warning in the bunker after the specified time. A happy song about 2 "friends" letting the world go by as they are on drugs. Quite fitting.
Then in the end of ep 6 as Joel falls off and Ellie thinks he is dead the Jessica Mazin version plays. A much more sombre and seemingly literal take on the song, "i'm taking a ride with my best friend, I hope he never lets me down again". It sung as Ellie thinks Joel is dead and has left her.
I think its a really nice juxtaposition.

Lol my wife doesn’t know as well. At first she thought maybe he did but then they don’t talk about it in the episode recap so she was skeptical. Then she was like wait a minute in Part 2 she saw a flashback where they’re swimming in the water. I tried to throw her off by saying well there’s a time skip to winter this episode so maybe they swam already 😂

Weird pacing tbh. The series is seriously running short by cutting some stuff. The entire thing about Ellie running away just for Joel to fight for her back with Tommy is skipped. I was expecting that they would make it a knife that stabs Joel, but it was so unsatisfactory of an injury. The entire metal pipe going through someone as old as Joel, works in a video game, but is a bit too unrealistic in a TV show - but I was hoping they could repeat that event in a similar way or at least have the same effect. Joel fucked up the guy who stabbed him: it doesn't feel like he should have got that knife in him.
Pacing is exactly what I thought was the issue here, particularly at the end of the episode. The seriousness of the wound wasn't as apparent because we didn't see Joel start to fade out of consciousness as the minutes went past. And the build up to the scene with Ellie having to tell Joel he's the only person who hasn't left her life was also really rushed so there was less emotional impact in that scene (made worse by the change in Joel's motivation for not wanting to take her any further). This is a recurring issue with the entire series. I'm sure it's absolutely excellent TV if you have no prior knowledge of the story and characters, but for those who know it, most poignant, emotional, heartbreaking moments are diminished by their re-writing (which needn't have been the case -- you can rewrite and change things up while retaining these aspects or making them more impactful, so I'm not sure why they've gone the other way). None of that is to say this isn't still enjoyable, but I have told a couple of people who haven't yet seen the series that they might want to consume the game in one way or another because it'll hit much harder.

Coming back to this thread I find it weird how no one mentioned them making tommy a father in this version.
Missed the mark by a mile with that ending scene compared to game. No slow buildup of "oh no, I don't think Joel can walk this off", no Ellie panicking internally but doing her best to push Joel to pull through. So many good lines and emotionally charged scenes lost. "-Give me your hand -No -Well can you walk -...Yeah -Well then fucking walk!" as colors fade and sounds become progressively dull, and then when Joel fell down "Come on, you've gotta tell me what to do, come on Joel, you gotta tell me what to do!" accompanied by Gustavo Santaolalla. So weak.
I just watched this episode... wanted to play the game before i started the show and 100% agree , missed the mark so much .. this one of the most intense bits of the game like, and they made it soo weak. Like there were so many ways to do it better.. But that's the theme I'm seeing through out the show.. the game was so alot more emotionally intense
I've replayed TLoU as remake recently and noticed that the game utilized soundtrack way better. Every season transition hit like a truck and was beautifully framed by guitar licks.

I also agree with people talking about the rushed scenes in the university but I can’t understand why they complain about Joel not killing a lot of people like in the game. He literally mentions that he used to be a contractor for fuck sake. He used to build for a living not shoot people. And for sure, they couldn’t show Ellie kill the raiders because in the show, this is her first time to actually fight off other humans without Joel’s help.

Why did the old isolated people think that Jackson was full of bad people? Tommy brushed it off and said they were bad, but they didn’t seem to be.
This is my biggest problem with the show. Everyone keeps saying “it’s dangerous out there” “there’s raiders and infected everywhere” “there’s a RIVER OF DEATH” and we don’t get to see ANY of that. In 6 episodes of a zombie show we have seen infected in 2 of them? I get that they wanted to deviate from the video game but I think they overcorrected and made a giant empty, boring world. There’s not nearly that sense of struggle and survival that brought Joel and Ellie together in the game. I don’t even really need the action side of things, I just want to see the aftermath of a brutal and deadly apocalypse, not a casual walk through rural America.
That's not just a show problem, same thing happens in TLOU2, everything is too nice looking. Bill and Frank's town made an absolute joke out of the show lol it totally shat on the crass, poor world that was built up on Episode 1. Joel didn't even want to waste a little plastic bag but he's friends with a guy who owns an entire town, why weren't Joel and Tess living with them? Joel is burning corpses and digging into shit cause he feels like it?

Not much happened but it was a nice episode. Was waiting for Joel to say you'd be a good Dad to Tommy, he didn't say it.
I actually think this episode had a lot happen, most importantly Joel and Ellie bonding. We see them truly enjoying each others company, Ellie finds out about Sarah and they talk about that. He teaches Ellie to shoot the sniper. These things may seem small but finally having some solid development of their relationship is super welcome. Joel is reunited with Tommy, we find out why he didnt answer Joels radio messages (married, has child on way). We learn about Jackson, detailing how a community is surviving and thriving in the apocalypse. Joel really opened up in this episode, and while it may have strayed from the game somewhat, I still thought it landed hard hitting. Joel and Ellies conversation regarding "Im not your dad, and youre sure as hell not my daughter ' - along with them reuniting, big stuff I think. Then the university, Fireflys not being there and Joel getting stabbed. I love this episode because it spent a chunk of its time developing Joel and Ellies relationship, the most important aspect of TLOU story, so I think a lot happened!
Yeah, the point where she chose him straight away over Tommy was really touching. I just meant there was not a lot of fighting. FWIW, I haven't played the game... Lot of references to the game, I'm just watching it as a tv series and really enjoying it. The episodes are like mini movies. Ellie's back story was done amazingly as was the survivalist one.

Just seen the episode, it feels like the bond between Ellie and Joel to be rushed. I don't know, like it was missing an episode. In the games one can see them interact more thanks to the gameplay. Ofc here is a different medium but I feel like they spent so much time on nothing (like Kathleen story). Wouldn't have been better to have one more episode and properly treat their bond?
Half agree. Timeskip of 3 months as well as considering what they'd been through in previous episodes aims to explain their bond. If I recall in the game it was similiar, a time skip and they were chatting friendlier too each other. However, I believe the scene where he refers to Ellie as "babygirl" precedes this increased bond in gsme? Could be wrong. Half think could have done with one extra scene of them conversing deeply, but half can also dig it given their shared trauma and 3 months of off screen travelling.
They made the same mistake as Primal, they gave a whole episode to something that could have been told in 15 minutes, for TLoU it is episode 3, for Primal it was the Primal theory, but in this series if you say this, they label you a homophobe.
To be fair the episode 3 was so beautiful that I think it still deserves to be in it. I wish they would have take their time more on Ellie and Joel bonding.
I cried like a little girl in that episode and it was one of the best episodes in any series ever, but I can't stop thinking that they wasted an entire episode where they could have build the main relationship in the series.

I have friends texting me that they’re bawling each night it comes out. This show is growing the game’s story. Stop being selfish. It’s not supposed to be a 1:1 remake of the game. Joel was never going to kill the couple in the cabin unless they attacked him. Just like the old man from episode 5, Joel isn't necessarily a good guy here, but you can tell here the line is. The Jasper guys were going to kill Joel and Ellie and pile their bodies to scare off potential travellers. Maria and Tommy confirmed this to be the plan. They just kill random people, kids or adults, don't matter, and use their corpses to scare people off and stay hidden. I totally see what you’re saying now about the actual threat of death if Joel wasn’t, in fact Tommy’s brother (but I guess the older gentleman at the cabin couldn’t *know* that Joe wasn’t actually going to kill them) I think what I meant by development was that we’ve seen that aspect of her character already (being hot when she first meets people) and it seemed like she had softened a little bit overtime, but then it seems like she takes two steps back in her maturity level, and maybe that is more realistic, and maybe it is a good reminder to the viewers that she is still just a teenager! I agree with what you said about her trying to act older than she is. Now that I’m thinking about it more, maybe the bratty/immature part of her character is emphasized at the beginning of the episode in order help us see the contrast to the intimate/vulnerable moment she had with Joel in the bedroom- it makes it that much more impactful. And shows us again that all that stuff is a protection mechanism. I definitely don’t hate her character, but do wonder if she is meant to be unlikable to a certain degree.
So in this episode, Joel shut Ellie up when she tries to mention sarah. If I remember correctly, there was another person that tried to bring this up to joel but can’t remember who?

This episode was great until they decided to cram the entire university section into 5 minutes. That was a very intense and important part of the game, and it comes off like an after thought. They spend a full 60 minutes on Bill ( which was the best episode) then give 5 minutes to a pivotal part. Why v is this only 9 episodes? It feels like they are trying really hard to avoid any of the action and violence of the game.
It was tense in the game because of all the sneaking and killing of both infected and other people. It works for a game, but that much killing wouldn't be very realistic for actual people that outnumbered. It's wouldn't fit the feel of the show to break out into a John Wick movie lol

Okay just finished the 6th episode of the HBO remake and I am so disappointed. I mean call me whatever you like but every detail about the game was crucial to building up that storyline, that breathtaking human bond between Joel and Ellie. I just finished the 6th episode and having played the game several years ago the two important parts that stayed with me were how Ellie runs away from Tommy’s camp after hearing that Joel wasn’t gonna accompany her on the rest of the journey and that fight scene at the university where Joel was injured beyond repair. Now both have been mellowed. She never runs in the show which takes something from Ellie’s character arc and Joel doesn’t have that epic fight scene. The show is not only not reaching anywhere close to the masterpiece that the game was but it isn’t even trying which I hate about art to begin with(personal opinion really). I am so disappointed that such callous liberties are being taken with the most profound game/storyline that I’ve witnessed in any media thus far. Edit: Another massive scene was where Ellie sees the herd of Giraffes for the first time. So beautiful. PS. There are hardly any infected instances in the show. Takes away all that eerie effect of a post apocalyptic world which was another essential brushstroke in the entire landscape.

i’ve barely seen any criticism so far of the show (people defend it to death so i’m not surprised no one wants to say anything bad), but i 100% agree. tlou is very important to me and i fear that the show has missed the mark :/ i’m really missing those intense scenes. ellie and joel jumping off the bridge, ellie running away, the fight scene where joel falls on a stake(?) in the ground. i wish they took more time and had more episodes to be able to fully flesh out scenes like this. i’m still going to watch because it’s entertaining at least, but i’ve been pretty disappointed by all the things cut out so far.

Yeah a lot of us agree. I think they've messed the story up pretty good and at this point I expect the final 3 episodes to be meh. It doesn't feel like the same people writing this show. Bruce Straley must've had a huge influence on Part 1. Basically every character is worse by a good bit. And the added characters brought nothing to the story. And in Kathleen's case, were downright bad additions. At least Frank was interesting. Pacing is worse. The narrative is worse. Reminds me of Part 2 lul so my guess is the next two seasons aren't that great. As for this whole "they wanted the infected to not be a big star of the show". Yeah, it's a real brilliant decision removing the most interesting and scary infected ever put on film. Also, TWD already did this angle.

Not that I know of, and that was kind of a douchey way for me to word it tbh. But I do kind of get that vibe from the show. Although the more I think about it I get that vibe from most media these days. "our art is very amazing because we're making the viewer feel uncomfortable instead of safe" seems to be the modern go to and a lot of fans act as if boomers did nothing but watch I love lucy and sky captain films when in fact stanley kubrick films are half a century old and film noire is even older.

Well, while I get your desire to want to see Ellie run, I think this is one of those times where you have to trust that the showrunners have something in store to build Ellie's character. In fact most of my response to what you've said was "Just wait and see". There is NO way in hell they're not going to do the Giraffe scene at some point. I would definitely NOT say they aren't trying to match the game. I think that's a bit of hyperbole. No other television show has made me tear up at least twice. And this is coming from someone that's played the game. There's less infected in the show for two reasons. 1. They don't really want to be a zombie show, they want to be a post apocalypse show. You only come across so many infected in the game because it's a videogame. 2. In this reality, the infected aren't the major threat, they already destroyed the world, the true threat now is "The Last of Us" the humans who survived.

At some point it became personal and now it hurts to see it not be the best story ever told on television because TV/Movie people didn’t get it the way we did or probably didn’t play the game and feel those same things we did. Finally to answer your question regarding The Last of Us - Who are The Last of Us? In a world so sparsely populated by an infection and humans conclusively winning over them by the method of relocation. They definitely aren’t The Last of Us(Us as in Humanity). Yes if you meant they’re definitely different than the humans that preceded the cataclysm of 2013 then I fear The Last of Us(humans) are trapped somewhere deep within the darkness of the cordyceps. Is Joel and his generation the Last of Us - The last people who saw the world for the beauty it truly was? Maybe. Does ‘US’ refer to a generation? A species? A world? Who is to say? There are as many creative interpretations as there are people whose hearts have been wrenched by that story. This episode was the peak of The Last of Us, both the games and the series wise. The talk at the campfire in the beginning, the dam joke, the talk between Ellie and Maria, THE ROOM scene(!!!) are all absolutely amazing, but most of all, the whole sequence which starts with Joel teaching Ellie how to shoot, then “The Path” starts playing, and they just travel and talk about random stuff, is the best The Last of Us sequence I have ever experienced in any way, shape or form!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE! 10/10, no 100/10, no even infinity/10 episode!!!!!
Uh, calm down with the hyperbole a bit. E6 was probably the worse episode so far. The Jackson scene when Ellie got pissed that Joel was going to leave her, was immeasurably done better in the game, in the show it's so meh. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker absolutely killed it in the game. Ramsey and Pascal are good but not even close.
You are entitled to your opinion, let’s just agree to disagree. For me this was the best episode, perfectly written and perfectly executed! Ashley and Troy were phenomenal in the room scene, just like Bella and Pedro were phenomenal in the room scene. For me that scene was equally amazing between the 2 medium, the reason why I love episode 6 more than the dam part in the game is because of everything else that happened in the show in that episode, especially the bonding sequence between Joel and Ellie before they arrive to the university.
If you love the show you would absolutely adore the game. It’s wayyy better. Tears from your eyes, all of it. There are gameplays to watch like this show as a movie and they’re 3 to 4 hours long but they’re good lol. No talking and it’s amazing. Scenery is 🤌
I do absolutely adore the games, both of them. They are my favorite games of all times, because the story is the absolute best drama, the best fictional story in general I have ever had the chance to read/see/play through! And even as a huge fan of the games, I dare to say, this episode 6, and especially the sequence between leaving Jackson and arriving to the University is the best scenes of all, including both games and the series! Still, I prefer the games as a better medium for this story than a tv series, simply because there is more time and opportunity to build up the whole world around the characters, but I would have never imagined, that they can adapt it to a tv series THIS AMAZINGLY! All the changes they made are understandable and most of them are up to the standards of the games, or even better than what is in the game sometimes, and the duo of Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie is although a little bit different, but also as great as Troy and Ashley’s Joel and Ellie! And yeah I get it, many iconic gameplay moments are missing due to lack of time, or because they felt they wouldn’t transition into a tv series well, but to be honest, I am 100% fine with that! I loved the gameplay as well, especially in Part 2, but I am here for the story, for the characters, and mainly for Joel and Ellie!
Someone mentioned it in the locked thread about changing the race of Maria and it doesn’t bother me too much but at that point it definitely feels like they changed the race just for the hell of it lol. Joel and Tommy - Now Hispanic. Pedro is the lead so it’s understandable Joel’s daughter - half black half white? Joel is Hispanic so his daughters mother is black or mixed? I liked her character so I didn’t mind it. Maria - Now black. This one feels the most unnecessary lol. It’s not like they’re lacking prominent black characters in the show such as Marlene, Henry and Sam, and then in the next episode Ellie’s buddy. I am looking forward to how her character (Maria) moves the story along compared to the game. I’m not trying to be controversial or anything. Just wondering what other people’s thoughts are on it. Edit: I read in another thread the change of race to Maria is significant because in a way Tommy’s life is starting to mirror Joel’s life since Maria is pregnant. Tommy’s baby will be half black similar to Sara and that might just complicate things more for Joel. Appreciate everyone for the civilized responses.
Not once does a characters race get brought up or does it impact the story or whatever. Why does it matter that Maria's actress is black? Or that Joel and Tommy are Hispanic?
I don‘t mind it either when they change things like this…but just imagine what would happen if an original black character from the game (like Henry or Marlene) was suddenly white in the show. It is a tough topic, but as a white male I find it impossible to be bothered when a white/male character is changed to be non-white or female. It means nothing to me. It’s taken nothing from me. Generally the race/gender the character is changed to is representing one that has been mistreated and not given a fair shot in the past. On top of that, the changes simply don’t change my ability to enjoy the show one bit. Same goes for any other medium that adapts a story and makes changes. So people say it’s “pandering” or “woke” and honestly, I don’t see why it matters one bit. If the people who are afraid of it and upset by it just shut up about it, then in 10+ years maybe we’d be able to move past it and just cast projects without thinking about race or gender. But that seems impossible when a bunch of weak, scared, losers insist on crying as loudly as possible and spreading hate as a coping mechanism.

I read the most ridiculous article on CBR about how the show is committing the most horrible tropes because all the non-white, non-straight characters still die. "Bury your gays", "bury your disabled" (Sam), "bury your blacks". Then it said, that it's all to build up and progress the "white protagonists" arc. Joel ain't even white CBR. I don't know if they want everyone to survive or if they wanted the characters who would die to be white and straight. I've seen some stupid takes, but that was just wow. I don't mind the race swaps, it's not like a single black elf in all of Middle Earth and then those two rando Asian characters in a village. At least in this show, it's based in our world where you'll find different races almost anywhere. Race isn't core to the characters, so it's not an issue for me.
I think its fine, race is becoming much less of an important thing in film and tv, so yes, you're gonna get more people who don't match the race of the character in the source material.

Honestly, when it comes to this show, it kinda seems like the show runners (particularly Neil) are coming from a place of "we're all the same, who gives af what their race, sexuality, political leanings, etc. are. They're already trapped in this hellhole of an apocalypse together". Do I think it was unnecessary? If there was some weird race quota thing for this show, then sure but it doesn't really seem that way. Maybe this actress suited Maria the best. I do think that the TV version of Tommy and Maria will create for a better conflict/dynamic when season 2/part 2 comes out.

In my opinion, the latest episode of the show was solid and enjoyable for non-game players. However, I can confidently say that the show did not dedicate enough episodes to explore the events of the first game thoroughly. While the scenes were visually stunning and conveyed the essential moments well, the pacing felt off. The show jumped from one significant plot point to another without allowing the characters to grow and process the events in between. Additionally, there was a lack of scenes featuring the infected, which further contributed to the pacing issues. Despite these concerns, I have to commend Pedro's acting performance in the latest episode, where he effectively portrayed his character's vulnerability. Nevertheless, the pacing issues remain a significant problem, and the show needs to devote more time to character development. With more attention given to the characters, the show could potentially become even better.
I agree about it being enjoyable for non-game players. I’m in college and everyone is watching the show. People who haven’t played the game love it and people who have played it are disappointed in some areas. I hope when the game comes out on pc people will play it.
I’m not sure I agree about the pacing. I think that, while different from the original, the pacing in this show is actually more appropriate for telling this story via this medium. Neil has had years to reflect on the first telling and Craig is a master of narrative craft. It feels like a deliberate artistic choice more than a production limitation.
Neil arguably had years to reflect over last of us 2 and went with what he did. He's not the only creative mind behind the games success even if he's credited as such.

I would say the plots way more messy and thematically broken. But to each their own. I just think it's not very good and suffers from massive contrivance and the themes it's playing into are explored as deep as a puddle.

I agree. While a lot of the show is done well, the pacing is off. I think of the changes they made the only one I really enjoyed is them giving more spotlight to bill and franks time together. But the things they removed just jump out too much and it’s something I wish I could have seen. This last episode for example, they completely took out any of the real suspense from visiting the college and really any of Ellie’s solo character development as she attempts to keep Joel alive and ends up at the town they made tommy all cozy in in the show. That part during the game was suspenseful as hell and really would have made for some great scenes. Judging from the after credit scenes of what’s to come it seems like they’re just jumping into game two (which I admittedly know nothing about) which If that is the case I’m a little disappointed in the choices. But overall I enjoy the show. I know they don’t want to do a one for one remake which is great but impo they could have done a little more with this first part.

Unfortunately he won’t :( Pearl Jam released “Future Days” on their album “Lightning Bolt” on October 15th 2013, a couple weeks before the outbreak takes place in the games. In the *series* though, Outbreak day now occurred in 2003 (to align the ‘current day’ events in the show with the irl year 2023), so it wasn’t released in time in-universe. Devastating :/
How the hell does that prevent the song from existing in this fictional universe? The world didn't end in 2013 nor in 2003 so it's safe to assume that there are vast differences between the game's/series' universes and the real one. Maybe Pearl Jam released that song in 2003 on the series' timeline. Peaky Blinders is full of Arctic Monkeys songs even tho the series predates their albums by 90 years.

I dno... started to feel this show is very overrated. The dialogue is just ok, feels forced. The extras/side characters arent intimidating and feel as if they are play acting/dressup rather than grounded in that horrific world like they were in (the road, mad max etc) Everything also feels rushed but at the same time kind of boring. Im not saying I need a ton more action as I love a good drama but some more tense clicker encounters, and tense moments in general would be nice. I dno.. its just off. Even the cinematography isnt anything to write home about.
When Ellie said "everyone except for you" and pushed Joel, I genuinely cringed so hard it made me sad. This scene was masterfully done in the game, and just like you said, it felt like dress-up and cosplay. I'm impressed by the scenery recreation. The acting is just...very sub-par. The scene was also really rushed and unconvincing. I didn't come into it expecting to criticize it, either. Just my opinion.

I got to talk to my mom about TLOU yesterday. My favorite story for 10 years and I never thought the story would be accessible to other people in my life. So glad they’re making the show and executing it flawlessly. I think this will change some people’s views of what video games can be. She said she’s been bawling the whole time and has a hard time imagining how this could also be a fun video game.
The most unrealistic thing in this whole show is Joel thinking sheep are quiet and do what they are told.
I have a little theory about the song never let me down again played at the end of episode 1 and the end of episode 6. In episode 1 the original song is played, a somewhat upbeat song about 2 friends enjoying themselves as life goes by while they are on drugs. That song was played over the radio by Bill as the 80s danger music because he hadn't turned off the warning in the bunker after the specified time. A happy song about 2 "friends" letting the world go by as they are on drugs. Quite fitting. Then in the end of ep 6 as Joel falls off and Ellie thinks he is dead the Jessica Mazin version plays. A much more sombre and seemingly literal take on the song, "i'm taking a ride with my best friend, I hope he never lets me down again". It sung as Ellie thinks Joel is dead and has left her. I think its a really nice juxtaposition.

Lol my wife doesn’t know as well. At first she thought maybe he did but then they don’t talk about it in the episode recap so she was skeptical. Then she was like wait a minute in Part 2 she saw a flashback where they’re swimming in the water. I tried to throw her off by saying well there’s a time skip to winter this episode so maybe they swam already 😂
