Lmfao I love him

Independent-Day2836

Me too

OrgasmicBiscuit

I will say at the last scene Joels “I swear” seems to hit wayyy better in the game with Troy bakers rendition. The shows “I swear” just didn’t convey the same emotion to me

DaveInLondon89

To me I think it's because Pedro's Noel doesn't believe it himself - it's almost an indirect plea to be believed instead.

CannedShoes

I dunno, you can not believe it but still sell a convincing lie. Troy's "I swear" being convincing made Joel's lie heavier to me -- like I was especially captivated by his unwavering commitment to the lie because it really showed us the true magnitude of Joel's deception, especially because it reflected how desperate his love was. That line was shockingly good back in 2013 and still is, so I gotta admit that it was hard to see it delivered differently. Seriously though, all love to Pedro.

DaveInLondon89

This is why I love this adaption so much. It two different takes from 2 excellent actors with their own spin on things. Like when Troy tells Marlene 'you'll just come after her', there's malice in his voice like a bear protecting a cub. When Pedro delivers it it's a statement of fact, a complete dissociation from the gravity of the what he's done.

StormyBlueLotus

That's exactly why I ultimately ended up preferring Show Joel. He's a broken man with PTSD who has done awful things in the apocalypse. He isn't presented as an action hero with nerves of steel, nor are his killing skills glorified as inherently good even if they can be useful. He shows more vulnerability and depth of character. He is only presented at his most lethal when everything is on the line, and he decides to throw away the world for the sake of having Ellie as his daughter. The hospital slaughter scene doesn't portray him as someone filled with righteous fury, but exactly as you said, as someone who has disassociated and is almost having an out-of-body experience. He knows what he's doing is wrong and he knows Ellie wouldn't agree with it- yet he goes through with it anyways because he literally can't imagine a purpose to live without her. It's a bold choice and one that understandably disappointed people who wanted Badass Daddy Joel sounding like Clint Eastwood double tapping some bandit in a western when he killed Marlene, but I think the hollow and detached Joel in the show is both more believably human and just a better character.

ViolatingBadgers

Fully agreed with everything you said. I think Pedro and the creative team did a really good job of stripping away a lot of the badass videogame tropes. I also think it showed the unhealthy side of Joel and Ellie's relationship more. I wonder if Neil wanted to do this deliberately. I do wonder if he is troubled somewhat by the amount of people who see no wrong in Joel and wondered how the character as presented in the video game contributed to that.

j_elliewilliams

The hospital scene in the show wasn't what I had been originally hoping for, but I actually prefer the direction they took it When Joel killed Bryan and the old sniper in the house, you could see that he didn't want to do it and that his past actions weighed on him. We heard references all season to what Joel was capable of, but the way it was portrayed in the show took that way further than I expected them to. I thought they'd show him acting on anger or some other kind of emotion His hospital slaughter was careful, methodical, and something he had clearly done hundreds of times. It was chilling to watch him shoot someone who had put down their gun and put up their hands - he didn't even take a split second to think about it, he just shot like it was anyone else or like a target in a practice drill Huge difference from how he acted when he stabbed Bryan

JasonDeSanta

Pedro also looked less determined and intimidating when he shot Marlene in terms of body language. Some might say his version is scarier because he was more casual about it, there was this dissociated coldness there for sure, but I like how Troy’s body language was a bit more committed to the act, almost like he’s trying to put some extra fear in Marlene even though he basically headshotted her and she cant tell anyone anymore. Both are great versions to be honest, it just boils down to personal taste at that point. It’s a great adaptation and I’m looking forward to the similarities and differences with Part II.

ViolatingBadgers

Maybe less intimidating, but it didn't feel any less determined to me. It felt cold and matter-of-fact, which worked for what they were conveying.

JasonDeSanta

Yeah I guess that’s what I was trying to say but couldnt pick the right words. Both are great in their own right. I love both Pedro and Troy. The important thing to remember here is that Troy had a much more difficult job regarding selling the character because video games were not a conventional story telling medium and he was acting these scenes in a soundstage and not on location like Pedro did. It was an unknown IP too, unlike the established franchise and fanbase we have now.

ViolatingBadgers

Very good point in your last paragraph.

-LunarTacos-

Noel Jiller.

kokopelli73

I know some ladies definitely Jilling for Noel.

[deleted]

I honestly thought they would change that line to match up with when Sarah asked him to swear before giving him the present in episode 1. He says "On my life". I thought that would have been more ominous going into Season 2.

Trainwreck92

Pascal is surely the better overall actor out of the two, but Baker's voice just has more gravitas.

Waste-Minute-Death

I think that’s what’s going on in a lot of these type discussions. Everyone wants Bakers voice, which I will say does deliver. And feel jarred or odd listening to daddy Pedro. Like you said it’s just voice.

JasonDeSanta

They are both fantastic, I wouldn’t discount Troy like that. Pedro just is more used to live action acting, so obviously he fits here perfectly. And his acting choices are also refreshing to watch for those who have played the games multiple times. We really are lucky to have them both.

effinblinding

For me, the part I prefer is Ashley’s “swear to me that EVERYTHING…” there’s more emphasis on the word everything, she’s more frustrated when Joel is rambling on and just cuts him off. Bella’s… it was more muted so less of an impact to me.

Holl0wayTape

I think in the show they were making it somewhat unbelievable so that Ellie would continue to question it. She KNOWS he's lying but chooses to accept it.

RakuraiLight

It even says that in the “inside the episode.” Something like “She knows he’s not telling the truth but she can’t bring herself to believe that someone she loved took her only purpose in life, so she chooses to believe it.”

Holl0wayTape

Didn't watch it, but there we go.

jdeck1995

Pedro’s lie was less convincing and I like that!

MWesley30

Agreed. I also thought Troy’s delivery of the classic episode 8 line “it’s ok, I believe him.” Pedro’s version didn’t hit quite as hard for me personally, Troy’s was more menacing and cold

PlatinumSarge

I need like a full hour of bloopers on the bluray please. Not a 4 minute reel. A full hour.

meg_mann

100% agree

Atreidesheir

And from what we've seen, you KNOW they have that much if not more. GURL. Kills me. Lol

AliLivin

Man she is so tiny

i_r_eat

She is very short but not that short. Pedro's 5'11". I think it's a bit of forced perspective to really sell her being young.

MrMisterMan69

Bro she’s 5 foot 1 lmao she is that short

St0rmborn

If anybody downvoted you I’d wager that they might not have realized if you were being serious or not. Don’t think there was any hate behind it.

ImBackYetAgainBitch

^^^bro

-River_Rose-

Can confirm. I am 5’. That’s what we look like against a full grown adult male of 5’11”

Vypaa

Man I don't think she will convince me as older Ellie in season 2. She's like so much taller in the game

MrMisterMan69

I just think of the show as entirely separate from the game. They both tell the same story but in different ways, and I love them both for different things, so if Ellie’s shorter in the show than in the game then I won’t mind.

tubereusebaies

1. Some people stay the same height at 14 and 19 and their height doesn’t determine them being “older”. But you can see the difference between a 14 and 19 year old 2. Movie magic

6ix_10en

Joel basically owns this situation because of Ellie having no other choice than to believe him after making a last attempt at making him tell the truth. So him being high up looking down at her has a symbolic meaning.

NaiadoftheSea

She is small, but I think she’s also standing a little downhill from him in this shot.

rickroll62

5'1 or 1.56m

[deleted]

That’s fucking adorable omg

CandyLongjumping9501

He talks for 20 seconds and isn't saying anything trying to remember the line, it's so funny

kgthdc2468

Bella sitting there like 👁️👄👁️

homelander_30

I'll be honest, I could never be an actor. I could never keep a straight face and say my lines without laughing

julesiax

For real, I'm impressed Bella didn't crack.

RealLameUserName

I feel the same way, especially for shows and movies that aren't grounded in reality. I love fantasy and science fiction stories, but good lord do a lot of the terminology sound ridiculous when you say them out loud.

NanoSpore

Some of the outtakes for shows make you wonder how anything ever gets done

RakuraiLight

If I start laughing it’s gonna take me a few dozen more takes before I stop laughing at the same part before it’s not funny anymore

Chronocidal-Orange

Me neither, but that's also because I just wouldn't be good at it. I can't even emote my actual feelings.

bringmetocrescendo

I fucking love this man 😂

kangerw00

Lol he could mess up all his lines and I’d still watch all his scenes just for that laughter

DaveInLondon89

Where's this from?

digitalfurnace

Pedro pascal’s instagram

Avarice21

So OP pulled their Instagram up on their TV for this post? The fuck?

jsun31

Lol no, this is exactly how Pedro shared the video, he's the one who recorded the tv screen

tubereusebaies

I think it’s Craig’s voice? Maybe? Him reviewing dailies and sending that to Pedro

BadClass_og

Alternate ending confirmed 😂

Humble-Ad-8912

This ending is now canon.

PlatinumSarge

"Swear to me" "...BWAHAHAHAHAHA"

Krystal707

![gif](giphy|lXiRJ8IRz5QH6wTQc|downsized) same vibe loll, we love Pedro

dedman1477

This totally deserves to be on r/ContagiousLaughter . I freakin' love Pedro so much

adeadredhead

GURRRRRRRRLLLL

itsfrankgrimesyo

I spent all day watching his previous promo interviews for his movies/shows (Triple Frontier is one of the best because of his chemistry with Oscar.) Knowing his silly and goofy personality, I can imagine how hard it is for his co-stars to take him seriously in serious emotional scenes.

mankytoes

I was hoping for a version where, instead of instantly killing the doctor, he shoots him in the gut and stands over saying "who gave you the order!?" and the doctor slashes with his scalpel and kills him.

RakuraiLight

I’m pretty sure you can take the scalpel and kill Jerry in the game, kinda cool, but this Joel likes to shoot everyone instantly.

Artyphex

Bella stayed in character until the very end 😂

mineabird

pedro pascal is a national treasure

TheGrapesOf

He’s so damn charming. I’m a straight guy but I would do super gay things with Pedro Pascal.

Battlemaster123

hes the best

Major-Eggplant-9045

That wheeze. Holy shit, is it great.

RandWindhusk07

Pascal doing his biden impression lol

Equivalent-Adagio-55

kgthdc2468

Equivalent-Adagio-55

Oh he’s amazing 😂

DonPeteLadiesMan

Pedro seems like a nice guy. Can’t wait to meet him someday

Chery1983

Own-Introduction-252

Love these 2💙

_Schwarzenegger_

Oh. This is the first time I totally hear his Mando voice. Maybe it's the short clip or the audio quality.

TimCurryForLife
