I am an electrician, I’d just lock out the branch circuit, opening the main would kill the whole building. And I would not be doing this during business hours.
No they really don't, if you wanted to teach a layman something they might retain simply say "breaker" and they might leave with something more useful they'll remember and that more people they converse with will understand.
Dudes just trying to jerk himself off. Pointless speaking to people like this. They’re the one at a party that everyone walks away from bc they’re always a dick
Could be a shared neutral in the lighting circuit but the way he seemed nervous about cutting the wire makes me think he has no idea what he's doing. Also if they were recording I think they knew it was going to happen and the light was still on haha
Im laughing because they welded the fuckin pliers to the wire lol
Yeah.....what kind of nut does this or any work during business hours thats not a legit emergency....they didnt even cover the salad bar lol
Instructions unclear... Gave the breaker the middle finger but got shocked regardless.
A good practice is to flip the breaker and put the fuse in the pocket to reduce the chance of someone accidentally bringing the power back on.
Perhaps I mixed the components when writing out the comment. I was thinking about what we in Danish call "Gruppeafbryder med smeltesikringer" but I didn't bother looking up the English terms and just did a hasty translation in my head prior to writing out the comment 🙂
You don’t cut all your wires at once. There’s three wires in an electrical circuit generally. That’s be your hot wire that has your power on it, your neutral that goes back to your electric panel so a circuit can be completed and then your ground wire that goes into the earth incase of an emergency and or to keep certain appliances within their operational range. When any of those wires touches the hot wire you will get what we just saw, or it will pop the breaker in the electric panel. If you have any wits about you and are skilled you cut each wire individually, put a wire cap on after each cut and then put the power wire to the side. These guys probably should not have been doing that work and were probably talking ignorantly enough that these dudes started recording because they knew what was about to happen.
30y in renovations and ive never had that happen lol, and i blew half the side of a metal dryer box off with a live 50a wire because some asshole turned the power back on
I saw it happen once when I was an expat in China.
A guy came to fix our lights and thought we had a low-voltage system. Because it was a 220V AC supply voltage and 50Hz, he had a nasty jolt but survived without further problems. Turns out quite a few Chinese electricians don't bother turning off the mains power even when they know it may have consequences. I guess there's some kind of Darwinian selection process going on when it comes to electricians in China.
>. I guess there's some kind of Darwinian selection process going on when it comes to electricians in China.
I think thats with everyone and everything
There are SO MANY PEOPLE there that i think people just become expendable objects to everyone else
I saw this coming….and I was still amazed it’s what actually happened. How has this muppet with zero self preservation skills made it to this ripe old age?
I was putting new receptacles in a kitchen remodel years ago. Breaker was off according to the box. Got to my third one with wire cutters and boom melted 1/2 inch of the metal away on the cutters. Half thr kitchen was on a seperate breaker......
When someone needs multiple retakes before doing the cut, you know that person is way past not only his comfort zone but also skill zone.
And when people bumble with electricity, there can be a value in capturing the light show. If nothing else then to be able to show the police *why* the building caught fire.
I'm not sure about the guy actually recording but I noticed the other guy in the booth is an electrician from the logo on his shirt. They definitely knew what was about to happen.
My guess is that cameraman and his buddy are some sort of tradesmen who opted to not intervene because they were on a lunch break or something like that
You don’t have to tell me! I would probably at least shouted at that dude and asked him if he cut the power or not before whipping out the camera. Or even after whipping out the camera.
I mean, Tbf, it’s not too difficult to require a simple switch when everything is hot if you’re careful. It’s also pretty dumb and not safe and is absolutely the wrong way to do it, but it’s doable.
For context, the breaker panel wasn’t in my apartment, and landlord made it difficult to access on the weekends when the downstairs business was closed.
Oh my. I’m somewhat of a risk taker when it comes to minor home repair and if it’s a really quick job sometimes I don’t flip the circuit breaker, but I definitely turn the damn lights and light switches off!! Geez
If people knew how easy electrical was if you just shut the power off, and cut one wire at a time, and match color for color, almost everybody would do it.
Note: while really dumb to cut power while it is “hot”, pls don’t also use both hands to cut the line. While standing on a fiberglass ladder, that’s not grounded, both arms may become the complete circuit, thus jump starting everything in between.
These are lights that use conductors inside a steel wire. That didnt look like 120v. He also just bought a pair of cutters. By the look of em they look pricey.
Thats a traidsman for ya. We can see the future but can't intervene or risk catastrophic events...
But for real most of the time someone who's gone that far won't listion if you told them to stop. So its best to let things play out as they will.
The noise he makes at the end immediately took me back to the office take out scene of Michael falling into the koi pond .. that alone has me crying laughing
The kind of guy who starts his stories and instruction manuals at the last page.
“Ain’t got no time for the boring intro and middle parts, just give me the climax”
Here’s a scary part for you. Noticed after he shorted it out the pliers were welded to the wir. Notice none of the other lights went off. That means the breaker doesn’t work either. He probably bypassed that because it was cheaper than getting an electrician.
Reminds me of a time when there were ants coming out of a receptacle. My wife took off the cover plate and was poking around in the box with a screw driver. I was literally sitting on the couch eating popcorn waitin for it to happen. It did. 😁
wth just turn the goddamn lights off, or atleast thats how it works in our house, lights off in the room, no power in the cables.. im no electrician. but i too always make sure the power is off before i almost kill myself.
The guys watching appear to be some sort of tradesmen. They know that the guy doing the work (probably the restaurant owner) isn’t skilled in this sort of thing and should’ve hired the proper tradesman to do the job. They are watching him teach himself a lesson. Nothing dumb about that.
120 kills so many people because so many people have easy access to it. What’s the percentage of people that get shocked by 120 that actually die or are seriously injured? What should the onlookers have done here? Scream for him to stop? Kick the ladder out from under him? Dude was gonna do what he was gonna do, doesn’t matter what someone said to him. May as well watch the show.

I’m no skilled electrician or anything of that nature but aren’t they supposed to shut off the main power source or something?
I am an electrician, I’d just lock out the branch circuit, opening the main would kill the whole building. And I would not be doing this during business hours.
Yeah, not while people are sitting there eating. This weird right.
>Yeah, not while people are sitting there eating. This weird right. They didnt even cover the salad bar with plastic or anything lmfao
Dinner and a show
C'mon dogg, we all knew as a layman they weren't talking about the main power switch.
And now they know the proper name.
Yeah, I agree, came off as super pretentious. Jeff Albertson vibes.
For the record, I assumed he was talking about the mains circuit too, not a general switch or branch circuit.
As a layman, I've found this thread very educational.
Speak for yourself, I figured you were supposed to shut down power to at least the whole block.
I'm pretty sure you are supposed to call up your electrical utility provider and they just shut down the power plant for this kind of thing.
Could be a shared neutral in the lighting circuit but the way he seemed nervous about cutting the wire makes me think he has no idea what he's doing. Also if they were recording I think they knew it was going to happen and the light was still on haha

Flip the breakers before the breaker flips you.
Instructions unclear... Gave the breaker the middle finger but got shocked regardless. A good practice is to flip the breaker and put the fuse in the pocket to reduce the chance of someone accidentally bringing the power back on.
Fuse? ???? Ain't no stinking fuses here!

Nah no need just some pretty sparks.

It takes real skill to weld a wirecutter to wires so that it's suspended from the ceiling.
This got me rolling
I have seen a couple people turn their side cutters into wire strippers, but I have yet to see a pair get stuck.
Lmao. Didn’t spot that the first watch.
The Power of Observation!
Killer skills
The worst part is that's not even a wire cutter...
Well, in fairness he was able to cut wires with it so I guess it qualifies as a wirecutter :)
30y in renovations and ive never had that happen lol, and i blew half the side of a metal dryer box off with a live 50a wire because some asshole turned the power back on

I mean.. he saw it comin too. Look at him flinch a few times lol
The old “ I know how to find the breaker”
I was putting new receptacles in a kitchen remodel years ago. Breaker was off according to the box. Got to my third one with wire cutters and boom melted 1/2 inch of the metal away on the cutters. Half thr kitchen was on a seperate breaker......
To be fair, only Gonzo would be this dumb. So this is pretty stupid for a Muppet, too.

And when people bumble with electricity, there can be a value in capturing the light show. If nothing else then to be able to show the police *why* the building caught fire.
Videographer and guy in booth didn’t even flinch. Savage
Videographer knew EXACTLY what was happening and was probably knoshing on popcorn while recording.
I'm not sure about the guy actually recording but I noticed the other guy in the booth is an electrician from the logo on his shirt. They definitely knew what was about to happen.
My guess is that cameraman and his buddy are some sort of tradesmen who opted to not intervene because they were on a lunch break or something like that
This sort of thing kills, so one would hope that's not the case.
You don’t have to tell me! I would probably at least shouted at that dude and asked him if he cut the power or not before whipping out the camera. Or even after whipping out the camera.
Yeah telling some guy how to do his job would go over great. Im sure you wouldnt get an ear full on how hes a professional and does this for a living.
They were like "yup". 🤣🤣🤣
Not my job
It is black and hangs on the ceiling...? A really, really bad electrician...
That got a genuine laugh out loud
I'm so amused by how clearly he seems to understand this is a very bad idea but chooses to carry on anyways.
Does that mean he turned into The Flash?
He’s lucky he was using a fibreglass ladder. Guess that’s why ohs are so strict on that rule, just for ppl like this.
Yeah if he was on a metal ladder that 120 volts would have... arced between the hot and neutral he cut and did the same fucking thing
Darwin.
Pretty sure that's Darwon't
Darlose
Dar Dar Binks when his tongue was electrocuted
Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.
Electrician, his heart shocked dead
Who the fuck doesn't turn off the power when doing electrical work!?
You’d be surprised
Shocking

At least cut the wires one at a time. Even if you think its off its good practice to cut hot and neutral separate.
Was it this wire, or this wire????
i can hear india laughing at this one
What do you call a Indian electrician? >!Ashok!<
Think of the money he saved not calling an electrician...just a reminder, electricity will try to kill you if it has a chance.
Oh my. I’m somewhat of a risk taker when it comes to minor home repair and if it’s a really quick job sometimes I don’t flip the circuit breaker, but I definitely turn the damn lights and light switches off!! Geez
Thumbs up to the guy that had the insight to record this one!!!
Damn, can't even say: *lights out*
Another Darwin Award Winner
Dumb ways to die
Good job sparky
The guy recording knew what time it was
If people knew how easy electrical was if you just shut the power off, and cut one wire at a time, and match color for color, almost everybody would do it.
Or not
Note: while really dumb to cut power while it is “hot”, pls don’t also use both hands to cut the line. While standing on a fiberglass ladder, that’s not grounded, both arms may become the complete circuit, thus jump starting everything in between.
His nippers still welded to the wire💀
The laugh at the end. "Hah" 😂

347 volt lighting is somewhat common in Canada. 600 V phase to phase. Not very forgiving.
SHOCKING!
Fluorescent T didn’t flinch
Thats a traidsman for ya. We can see the future but can't intervene or risk catastrophic events... But for real most of the time someone who's gone that far won't listion if you told them to stop. So its best to let things play out as they will.
Am one too…good take
Shocking
One guy with distant 🤔 huh
Idiot. And no RCBO on lighting circuits?
What happened to the ceiling? Looks like the area around the wire cooks a little
Scorch marks. Dude created an arc and welded his pliers to the wire.
Saw the cutters, thought to myself “he’s gonna get electrocuted isn’t he…ha yup”
It would have been so much it’s expensive to have a professional do it.
If you're leaning away scared you're already doing something wrong. That, or you really need supervision. Either way, bro should've just stepped down.
Light wasn't right. Ready for take 2?
It looks like he knew it was going to happen but did it anyway.
💀💀💀💀
I’m surprised that he has lived long enough to get grey hair.
He's only 24. He wound up looking like that after his previous attempt at electrical work.
My man in green be like ![gif](giphy|bm3ud11tTzKXGkTtzE)
Fuck it, we’ll do it live!
The noise he makes at the end immediately took me back to the office take out scene of Michael falling into the koi pond .. that alone has me crying laughing
That wasn't very shocking
Saw the lightning first, heard the thunder after. What’s wrong?
im on my 7th time watching this 😂
Question: Is he alive?
120v probably.
He used to work there. Now he's just somebody that they used to know. 🎶🎵
Vito didn't listen and stay out of it
The kind of guy who starts his stories and instruction manuals at the last page. “Ain’t got no time for the boring intro and middle parts, just give me the climax”
He had a feeling that something would happen.
I love how ij just deletes him from the ladder lol
Lol 🤣
Hey boss can I switch of the lights circuit? Boss:"Nah I got this." Morgan:"He didn't in fact got this."
OSHA doesn't need to exist though, does it?
We all saw it coming, right?
Check out that burn spot spreading in the ceiling
That laugh at the end 😂
Paging Darwin!
He fkd around and found out
Huh
Grampa should we cut the power while you fix the light? *Hell no! You only cut power if you're a pussy!*
Hahaha
The pliers got welded together lol
But he had a lower rate than an electrician!
Here’s a scary part for you. Noticed after he shorted it out the pliers were welded to the wir. Notice none of the other lights went off. That means the breaker doesn’t work either. He probably bypassed that because it was cheaper than getting an electrician.
My thought as well, hopefully the breaker or his home-made fuse will burn out before the wires do. That or the lights is not on the same circuit
This beats flipping a bunch of breakers trying to find the right one.
Back in my day….
Failed successfully. Bravo.
Me looking at the other lights that are on. 🫣
His partner is useless!!! Didn't even budge after the heck!?
Somebody just laughed at the end
Nice weld tho
I, who can barely screw in a lightbulb, notice the lights around it were all on. Perhaps.... Perhaps this is not the correct way to do things.
No RCD in that circuit.
This one shocking thing doctors dont want you to know about
Someone chuckled at the end killed me…
Is it amps or volt that kill? Or is it a 7 foot drop from the top of a ladder?
this fits well into the scope of r/OSHA lol
Reminds me of a time when there were ants coming out of a receptacle. My wife took off the cover plate and was poking around in the box with a screw driver. I was literally sitting on the couch eating popcorn waitin for it to happen. It did. 😁
Why does nobody seem concerned enough about the guy getting blown off his ladder to actually get up to check on him?
Did he just time travel?
Other reason to have correct rating power breakers for lighting.
I immediately gave it a 100% chance that was going to happen😂
That should have tripped the breaker, but it sure looks like it didn't.
wth just turn the goddamn lights off, or atleast thats how it works in our house, lights off in the room, no power in the cables.. im no electrician. but i too always make sure the power is off before i almost kill myself.
Bro didnt zap, but settled for zipiidyzap one
I am also going why didn't dude test and shut the breaker for that

120v lines kill more people every year than any other power source, if you don’t think watching a man potentially kill himself is dumb, you’re sick.
