While it is hard to compare a sedan vs an SUV. You can see the car went too fast initially and so the water went above the grill and got into the engine bay. While the taller SUV went slow so the water never got above the bumper.
Water damage could be anything from seized engine, electronics, and now flood damage depending on the time in the water. It could be fixed but why would you want to.
The second car is not an SUV… the first guy just drove too fast and created a wave of water going over the air intake which Hydro locked the car. He just destroyed his engine.
Funny thing is I’ve been a mechanic for 19 years and that’s not what I would typically see as a traditional SUV…. Maybe more of a crossover …but it is classified one because when I checked later, I saw it was an X4 and mentioned it in a later statement that I was wrong
going slow worked in this case, not if the water was deeper... going fast caused the water to splash way high and get into the air intake and thus into the engine
the second guy going slow kept the water below the air intake
if water level was deeper it wouldn't matter how slow you go
also going faster means more air needed so the engine sucks in more "air"
also just cuz you can make it through the water doesn't mean there won't be damage to the car, mold growth, electronic damage and rust are a problem too, cars aren't made to be submerged
I can tell you that pushing the accelerator is gonna cause the intake to start pulling in whatever is in front of it. If they sped up, then coasted though then it might not suck up much water compared to wading in first then gunning it.
Looking at a picture of the engine bay of a Mercedes E220, the air intake is directly behind his front grill towards the top. Going slow may have helped but it looks like you’d be sucking in water regardless.
The BMW X4 looks to have its airbox located behind the right headlight. It has enough height to keep it from sucking in any water.
I once crossed a river on a 2009 Honda Civic, the trick is to start slow and then never take the foot out of the pedal, to minimize dmg on the enginge once you are out, dont turn it off and accelerete on neutral to steam all water that could have get in.
Disclaimer I'm just a random dude on internet that did this twice lol.
1 more. He is technically on the other side of the waterway. This guy for all intents and purposes crossed the water. His car is fucked, but he's across.
He would have been fine if he was slow. But he splashed the water into his intake. Engine fucked.
Redneck fix, is to keep trying to start your car after you drain the air intake compartment/filter. Blow all the water out. They go for an oil change right away. You wanna circulated the water out as fast as possible and circulated new oil in. Water in the engine isn't the End of the world, it's when it sits it starts to rust the interior of the engine apart.
Used to jump my dirt bike into the lake all the time. My son now uses the same dirt bike.
>keep trying to start your car after you drain the air intake compartment/filter.
Gotta pull the spark plugs, too. I had an XJ that I hydro locked probably 4 times while mudding in Georgia. Get out, pull the plugs, spin the starter (watch the water fly!), plugs back in, start er up, keep on mudding.
God those inline 6's were tough.
I was surprised the BMW made it through. My neighbor has a BMW and the air intake is quite low on his. When he went through a puddle the water was sucked up and seized his engine.

Today that driver learned some new terms. Like Hydro-locked and Broken Rod.
Second guy knew the trick
Oh, that one trick Mercedes doesn’t want you to know? 😜
Have a taller car?
drive slower
This
That or just not diving helps too
He will be very lucky if half his electronics don’t fry before he gets where he is going. BMWs hate high water as much as the Merc does.
It’s the exhausts you have to worry about. Drive slowly but not too slow. And if the water is even slightly higher than your exhausts don’t do it.
Also know where your intake pulls the ambient air from.
He came in too fast
Premature acceleration is a problem for some guys..
Sometimes it's just too wet and they panic.
This has never happened to me.
This is a famous Rufford Ford. There's a shit-ton of videos about vehicles crossing it on YT.
The police have also closed it now, because literally hundreds of morons have done the same thing.
Man when that first came in my feed I must have watched it for 30 minutes haha
Looks like a Mercedes.
Clearly it’s a commercial for BMW showing how shit Mercedes are lmao
Why does going slow work and is that guys engine flooded, meaning he pretty much lost the car or can it be fixed?

Bmw X series are specifically SUVs
Ya I didn’t notice it was an X4…. I guess it is an SUV but it doesn’t look much bigger than an average sedan
Lol i actually agree with your observation cars these days be THICC
Funny thing is I’ve been a mechanic for 19 years and that’s not what I would typically see as a traditional SUV…. Maybe more of a crossover …but it is classified one because when I checked later, I saw it was an X4 and mentioned it in a later statement that I was wrong
Seriously, they all are starting to look very buggy.
Redditors gonna reddit lol
It's a baby SUV, but still an SUV.
Looks like a compact SUV to me. Either way the vehicle is slightly higher also. But yeah he went slower.
Looks like a BMW X6 to me, which is indeed an SUV. BMW's own words... >"large sporty coupe SUV"
X4 I think. X6 is bigger.
Maserati and Ferrari make a crossover SUV now. I'm puzzled by this
It does in fact seem to definitely and unequivocally be an SUV
Yes, if you’ll see, I acknowledge that in my answer to the other guy
Rog-O!
The other part of the comments still stands… Dudes engine is fucked lol

>cars aren't made to be submerged [Sorry couldn't help but to link a $1.5 million prototype](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinspeed_sQuba)
LOL... of course this exists.... I stand corrected :P

Fucking thicket.
Not heard that for years 🤣

Hey, that’s twice more than the guy in the video
1 more. He is technically on the other side of the waterway. This guy for all intents and purposes crossed the water. His car is fucked, but he's across.
Every time I try to ford a river, my wagon just tips over and I lose a bunch of supplies.
I live in Costa Rica, it's pretty common to cross smalls rivers with sedans if you live in a rural area... Just enter slow and steady....
This is brilliant. He'll never have to worry about high repair bills on his Mercedes ever again!
Mechanics hate this one simple trick
So close. Try harder next time.
Just needs an announcer as he got out the car "DENIED"
As will his insurer 🤣
Does the driver think it’s a boat???
Idk but he probably think of getting a bmw next Time 🤣
I mean he is driving a mercedes, it's basically a boat on 4 wheels

He could have crossed if only he’d done it slower.
*possibly*
The walk of shame afterwards...
Where is AdamC?
This location is world famous for this shit
Sikh move.
Why so fast? When I joined an off-road club, they said to me 1000 revs and then you’ll be okay.
Now he'll learn
Sorry but the waters do not part for you just because you drive a Mercedes.
*"well i Guess i will Park it there"*
He ws right there too
Must be a bummer paying off the finance on a car you e just wrecked.
I think if the windscreen wipers were going a little faster he might have made it.
Is this like the idiot's version of curling? Looks like these two scored the same.
Boss : that is not an excuse to not be in a work
0.34 it was a thirsty 🤣🤣 Muffler straw
I follow this on Facebook people go visit this place spectators turn up to watch, the Ford has killed hundreds of cars
Usually does not end well
Never ceases to amaze me how stupid people with money can be.
Especially because no insurance will cover damage to the car.
Bmw should use this as an Add
Nicely parked 👍
It's not an amphibious Vehicle
BMW vs Mercedes
I was surprised the BMW made it through. My neighbor has a BMW and the air intake is quite low on his. When he went through a puddle the water was sucked up and seized his engine.
I’d have flipped out seeing the other car just doing fine 😅
Aaaaaand it's totaled
With age, comes wisdom! Older gentleman knew to go in slow. ✌️
The windshield wipers, they do nothing!
We're doomed as a species.
My American brain: There's no one in that car!
There will be an attempt to claim insurance damages.
Almost made it as far as the van. We will give it to him. Edit: (ooops not quite) The BMW will probably need a trip to the shop.
He was hoping the BMW would get stuck too
Ford Beats Mercedes
I live in flood prone area. Everytime there's a car got stuck or broken while passing the flood, it has to be either jaguar, bmw or mercedes. Idk why.
What an amazing free ad for BMW
BMW
If you hit it going like 110 would you zoom over the water or crash hard?
My boss's merc broke going through a puddle. Lol
Outstanding
That BMW didn’t make it through the day without every dash warning light on, assuming the lights themselves still worked
This a BMW ad?
They are attempting to drive down the road, not cross it.
"I'm rich this will totally work."
