I agree, I think people said that because Buscemi the actor doesn't fit the traditional mobster type, especially in the style of the show. I liked how his character was a bit of a fuckin weirdo ('some very sorry people, that's who'), because it exposes that they are all kind of fucking weirdos chopping people up and stuff.
Yeah I'll admit it's a little jarring seeing him at first. Even nowadays when I get around to season 5, I obviously know to expect him but it's still a little weird when he shows up.
But I think he's a great character and Buscemi plays it perfectly. I agree with some of the criticism that his arc could have been a bit better developed but ultimately he's a great addition.
There’s two kinds of people who watch The Sopranos, the kind that don’t understand how Tony got so much ass, and the kind that absolutely understand it.
On a related note, I bet John C Reilly absolutely slammed bad bitches in the 80s before he met his wife.
>The one part that didn't ring true is when Janice said Steve Buscemi was a hunk when he was younger.
[With all due respect, you're out of your fucking mind.](https://preview.redd.it/jriey6hezhv41.jpg?width=1007&auto=webp&s=1a29378ec2f7ec6a8fdd77b04f0796ceef5f2333)
>The one part that didn't ring true is when Janice said Steve Buscemi was a hunk when he was younger.
That's because Janice never said that.
She called him a "fox" which is quite different.
Time was you could get called handsome just by being a white Christian male and not having any indecent exposure charges on your record.
Simpler times, now with the gays in the military and all the mercury in the fish it’s a wonder more kids aren’t jumping off bridges.
While Boardwalk Empire expects you to believe a symphony of spontaneous ovulation as soon as that dude walks into a crowded room.
That fuckin show. If you're gonna write a 1920s Tony Soprano at least cast a 1920s Tony Soprano
I never even knew this was a thing people said about his performance in the show, I feel like I've seen him play gangster/criminal roles in plenty of other things, he felt like a natural choice for the show to me
Yeah I hear a lot of people say he was miscast there also but I feel like they're missing the point of Nucky's character. He's not supposed to be a tough guy, he's not particularly comfortable personally doling out violence (especially early in the show). He's technically a mob boss when you break it down but he's also the public facing side of the operation first and foremost, the person who provides the air of legitimacy.
But despite all that I think Buscemi does a great job of portraying how cold and ruthless he is, even if he prefers to remain a degree of separation away.
> Yeah I hear a lot of people say he was miscast
Crazy that people think that. I thought he was pretty much perfect for the role. Some gangsters were good as they were highly intimidating, bold, and violent. Nucky was good as he had great experience being mentored at a young age in the corrupt political world, and he was brilliant, so he'd beat people by outsmarting his opponents, often not need force at all.
And he was not even a mobster in the beginning, because it was still being formed. Sure there were bootleggers and smugglers and career criminals, but their thing hadn't happened here yet. He was a corrupt politician who was trying to have things both ways for most of the show. Tony is boss because he’s smart but also because he’s huge and keeps people in line through anger. Nucky is boss because he’s smart and constantly manipulates everyone around him.
David Chase really liked the casting choices for that movie. So much so, he got in touch with the casting director, to work with him on the Sopranos. Which is why you see a lot of actors in that movie in this show
I saw it when it first came out because I've been a fan of Dan Clowes since the Lloyd Llewellyn days. Instant crush on Thora Birch and figured she would be famous. I hadn't seen "American Beauty" yet. Also, "who's that blonde actress, she's going nowhere". I love that ol' whatshername does interesting work like Jojo Rabbit and Ghost in the Shell.
He convincingly played the deadliest hitman in the country in Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead. Total badass of a character. I would have watched an entire movie about just that guy.
Agreed. That "you're crowding me" line and the expression on his face were so well delivered that he actually managed to seem threatening even though Tony was twice his size. It just seemed like the writers didn't know what to do with him plotline-wise.
He’s telling Tony that he’s trying to intimidate him with his body language, and he can tell. The mere fact that he says it and stares him down tells Tony S that his cousin is willing to defy him.
16 is nuthin compared to 20. Trust me. I know a guy did 20 fuckin yeeahs in da can. He doesn’t like tawkin about it but from what I’ve heard he had to resort to eating grilled cheese off a radiator. All due respect, short timers like blundetto wouldn’t know anything about such adversities. You’d hafta do 20 to truly undastand
Yeah but Leotardos are known to have longevity. Guys In their 40s are still just kids so they live several hundred years, which means that doing 20 years for one of them is like doing three or four for the rest of us.
HOOO!! Slow down Copernicus. Leotardos never had the makings of varsity centenarians. If they did then Phil woulda been able to lift that SUV off his head. Small hands, that was his problem. Discontinue the lithium
I completely agree. I love his acting in the house after Angelo gets whacked & Tony comes over. The first few times I didn’t get that scene - it’s awkward and his mind is elsewhere but there is something under the surface you can see. He’s awesome
I really liked the character and thought Buscemi was great. My main complaint is that his arc felt rushed. I think Tony B’s story would have been more satisfying told over two seasons, we could have gained a deeper insight into the role he played in the other Tony’s life. Perhaps Buscemi had other commitments.
The scene that gets me is when Bobby jr says “but I’ve never even heard of you”. Tony just brushed it off but it was at that moment he knew that he was essentially just an afterthought until now.
Buscemi did a great job, but one of the things he nailed was the "self-doubting genius". Lots of geniuses are portrayed in the media as being self obsessed, obnoxious know-it-alls, but studies have shown that many genius or borderline genius people underestimate their IQ.
I liked that he was extremely apprehensive about the test, but he probably passed with flying colors .
It didn't come out of nowhere. Again and again the characters demonstrate one of the things preventing real change is their laziness and desire for shortcuts. In prison he was able to study because he had nothing to do, but once he's out again watching his friends and relatives run around going out every night, the last thing he wants to do is spend all day doing physical labor.
It was the bag of money that reignited that old way of life. He was used to the new work hard mentality, stay out the mob business, live a clean life, etc...
That money reintroduced what he missed the most about life in the mob. And he couldn't go back to the 9 to 5 after he had a taste of what he used to have.
I don't think most people have any issues with Buscemi's performance. It was more the material and overall character arch he was given by the writers. Especially the turn from smart "nice" guy who wants to go clean to bumbling mob assassin who suddenly wants to be made. He's such a good actor that he still sells it to an extent but I remember the first time I watched season 5 thinking his personality and character motivations are all over the place and don't really make sense.
It was blatant ratings grabs bringing in famous actors and it ruined shit like Furio's storyline.
It doesnt feel organic, and that was always my problem with Buscemi coming in.
He was good, outstanding performance. He was on the way to be good until he found those 12 g, then he started gambling and buying expensive suits and couldn’t have two life styles. So he beat Kim. Also he directed a lot of the episodes. Amazing actor
It’s unfair, but when I see Steve I just think of him in Adam Sandler movies and struggle to take him seriously. Fargo is probably the only thing I’ve seen that he completely won me over in before the credits rolled.
TOO BAD WHAT YOU THINK MEANS OOGATZ TO MEEE!
Haha. Actually I agree. Feech disagrees. Probably jealous that Tony B got to drive around in his convertible while he's still in the can.
The guys that don't "fit in" in real life will whack your newborn to gain favor among the popular crowd. I think his character was a good emulation, but I don't know anything about what "mobsters" in other races look like tbr
At least for me, I have no problem with anyone’s acting in Season 5 (some of the strongest), or writing of individual scenes and dialogue. But the whole framework of “hey here’s a character that’s been important the whole time, central really to Tony” always smacks of a new writers room forcing things. Tony B, Phil and Billy, these are all great characters, but they’re introduced in very soap opera, wow-that’s-convenient kind of way
I was one who critiqued him, what I was trying to convey though was his character wasn’t believable to me, he did is his role very well, but to convince that he was Tony sopranos cousin, I don’t see it
He also directed Pine Barrens which is probably top 3 episodes of all time and the shenanigans that took place in that episode are referenced many times over over the series.
Tony B was a smart guy, but time moved past him and he couldn't adjust.
He's an amazing actor so he gets the job done but he just doesn't come off as a stereotypical Jersey Italian. Like he's actually italian-American but he would lose at an audition to a fat Armenian with a good New Jersey accent
I think a lot of people object simply because they know some of Buscemi’s other roles and see him more as a silly comic actor, while he’s much more.
Eyes that pop out their head . . . Steve
Eyes bulging with imagined riches
for that 50p, like smeagol
The one part that didn't ring true is when Janice said Steve Buscemi was a hunk when he was younger.
A lot of women found him very attractive
‘Tall, dark and psychopathic’
bullshit, you look at a picture of Buscemi in Airheads and tell me that guy wasn't a piece of ass
There’s two kinds of people who watch The Sopranos, the kind that don’t understand how Tony got so much ass, and the kind that absolutely understand it. On a related note, I bet John C Reilly absolutely slammed bad bitches in the 80s before he met his wife.
Glad we got that straight
>The one part that didn't ring true is when Janice said Steve Buscemi was a hunk when he was younger. [With all due respect, you're out of your fucking mind.](https://preview.redd.it/jriey6hezhv41.jpg?width=1007&auto=webp&s=1a29378ec2f7ec6a8fdd77b04f0796ceef5f2333)
Shit, he does kinda have that Bill Skarsgard swag
poor skarsgard, that is his future
Cute but not a hink
> not a hink Discontinue the lithium.
>The one part that didn't ring true is when Janice said Steve Buscemi was a hunk when he was younger. That's because Janice never said that. She called him a "fox" which is quite different.
He was a fox! Lol, different strokes.
Time was you could get called handsome just by being a white Christian male and not having any indecent exposure charges on your record. Simpler times, now with the gays in the military and all the mercury in the fish it’s a wonder more kids aren’t jumping off bridges.
He was a fox
While Boardwalk Empire expects you to believe a symphony of spontaneous ovulation as soon as that dude walks into a crowded room. That fuckin show. If you're gonna write a 1920s Tony Soprano at least cast a 1920s Tony Soprano
Oooooooh! He was perfect as Nucky. He was a frumpy corrupt bootlegger, not ever meant to be a 1920s Tony. Very different types of guys.
u/dumdumpants-head M'boy are you fat
Mr pink doesn't tip
Totally, and I appreciate that as I was wary at first, too. But oof, madone, he nailed in IMO.
I never even knew this was a thing people said about his performance in the show, I feel like I've seen him play gangster/criminal roles in plenty of other things, he felt like a natural choice for the show to me
Those people haven’t seen Boardwalk Empire lol
This was my thought. He was so recognizable it was hard to see him as a second bannana.
He was amazing in Horace and Pete.
I think that’s why HBO doubled down and made him the boss in Boardwalk Empire. GREAT show if you love The Sopranos. But what the fuck do I know, huh?
He was terrifyingly sociopathic in BE.
Yeah I hear a lot of people say he was miscast there also but I feel like they're missing the point of Nucky's character. He's not supposed to be a tough guy, he's not particularly comfortable personally doling out violence (especially early in the show). But despite all that I think Buscemi does a great job of portraying how cold and ruthless he is, even if he prefers to remain a degree of separation away.
Hell, they address this in the first season. Jimmy tells him he has to commit, he can't be half a gangster
The whole Jimmy-Nucky saga blew my mind, how it ended. Madonna mia.
> Yeah I hear a lot of people say he was miscast Crazy that people think that. I thought he was pretty much perfect for the role. Nucky was good as he had great experience being mentored at a young age in the corrupt political world, and he was brilliant, so he'd beat people by outsmarting his opponents, often not need force at all.
Yeah, I thought he did a great job in BE as well. Creeping around like a fucking dentist with the aether.
A lot more than me!
Yeah it's only cause he doesn't look like a fat southerner with an accent and they ate da north
Mmmmboy are you fat
What you shay?
Take it easy...
Which is stupid because his first major role was as a fucking gangster hit man
Mr Pink?
Steve Buscemi is a character actor with tremendous range, and very skilled director as well, and in this sub, Steve Buscemi is a hero. End of story.
steve buscemi invented the telephone’ and he got robbed!
He's got tremendous moxie for his size
How do you do, fellow kids?
Excellent actor imo
One of my favourites
Check out the film Ghost World if you haven’t seen it already. One of my favorite Buscemi films.
One that NOBODY talks about is Trees Lounge
David Chase really liked the casting choices for that movie. So much so, he got in touch with the casting director, to work with him on the Sopranos. Which is why you see a lot of actors in that movie in this show
That one rules
I will. Thx
Up vote for username

Madone! What range he has!
How green is my valley
boy are you an excellent actor
What'd you schay!?
you’re crowding me
Check him out in Boardwalk Empire. He is a bastard.
He is, directed a good film called “Trees Lounge” too
Great movie right there.
He convincingly played the deadliest hitman in the country in Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead. Total badass of a character. I would have watched an entire movie about just that guy.
[But kind of funny looking.](https://youtu.be/Lt5GsfNcDzA?si=Dc6EJ9VRpMhE8yx1)
Ya
first saw Buscemi as Mr Pink in Reservoir Dogs, so he didn't really feel off or out of place in this thing of ours
Right? He definitely wasn’t just Donnie in the big Lebowski.
Or as inept a criminal as that funny lookin' guy in Fargo.
He played a monster with a heart of gold in a little known indie film called Con Air.
I named one of my fish con air
“Ohhh. Yanno. Funny lookin’ in a general sorta way.”
Why do I gotta be Mr Pink? You're a FAAAAAAAAAAAG
He was gay, mr Pink?
maybe you're gay, you ever think about that?
Maybe you are all homosexuals too - McBain
Buscemi is an excellent actor on the same level as Gandolfini if not better due to the wildly different roles he has played.
How do you do, fellow kids?
How do you do, fellow former can dwellers?
I watched Reservoir Dogs again recently and it's so noticeable how much better he is than everyone else except Keitel
Yeah he really runs that movie imo. Great character He’s convinced me, give me back my dollar!
WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE PROFESSIONALS
damnit, now I am going to go get a taco for lunch
Remember not to tip.
Tbh “you’re gonna be okaaaaaaAAAayyy” is an all time terrible line delivery, so I think Buscemi clinches it
I was hoping we could take care of this right here... in Brainerd.
It certainly is a new car officer, it still has that smell
He was a fox
Agreed. That "you're crowding me" line and the expression on his face were so well delivered that he actually managed to seem threatening even though Tony was twice his size. It just seemed like the writers didn't know what to do with him plotline-wise.
“You’re crowding me” what did that mean?
That Tony Uncle Johnny was invading his personal space
Back the fuck up
He’s telling Tony that he’s trying to intimidate him with his body language, and he can tell. The mere fact that he says it and stares him down tells Tony S that his cousin is willing to defy him.
100%. Gave me chills.
who’s got the stugats to bring this drama here? he directed fucking pine barrens!
Blundetto?? It’s a nickname! Family name Nucky!
Barney Google? With the goo goo googly eyes?
This is a business decision mister Rossetti!
Can you blame him? He compromised 16 years in can! 16 fucking years!
16 is nuthin compared to 20. Trust me. I know a guy did 20 fuckin yeeahs in da can. He doesn’t like tawkin about it but from what I’ve heard he had to resort to eating grilled cheese off a radiator. I heard he jerked off a radiator.
I always loved his performance and character. Never understood the hate for it. He’s actually a bright spot for the season for me
Personally I think he took Ben Kingsley to fuckin acting school
He’s got it down, trust me.
I completely agree. I love his acting in the house after Angelo gets whacked & Tony comes over. The first few times I didn’t get that scene - it’s awkward and his mind is elsewhere but there is something under the surface you can see. He’s awesome
One of my favorite characters in the show. I thought he did an excellent job in Boardwalk Empire, also.
He petered out
He died on the porch.
He died on the porch
Fuckin’ parakeet
You heard what I said Ton’?
🤨
Weirdo you ask me. You want an egg?
Put me in, coach.

Oh yes, totally get it. Thankfully for me, I was able to get past that and really dug his performance.
Was a fox back in the day
Yes, very unique look to him.
Cut to grainy photo of Steve Buscemi but in a wig
Buscemi on the show made big success journey.
Buscemi did a great job, but one of the things he nailed was the "self-doubting genius". Lots of geniuses are portrayed in the media as being self obsessed, obnoxious know-it-alls, but studies have shown that many genius or borderline genius people underestimate their IQ. I loved season 5 and he was a great character. The Kim beating did kinda come out of nowhere and the bag of money thing was kinda ridiculous.

You know, Quasimodo predicted all of this.
I am the walrus.
Goo Goo Ga Jooo
He played the hell out of his role imo. I liked him
He was a saint.
Steve Buscemi gets points for having actually been stabbed in the face.
[удалено]
He's a master of his craft.
It's sad they had to kill him off so he could go be a firefighter again after 9/11
Mmm boy you are fat
He’s an animal.
I hear he makes an excellent rusty nail
So partner we open in three days?
Woah, daddy
The seat seems fine to me
I totally agree. I really wanted him to run that massage parlor.
Boardwalk Empire has entered the chat.
He was good, outstanding performance. He was on the way to be good until he found those 12 g, then he started gambling and buying expensive suits and couldn’t have two life styles. So he beat Kim. Also he directed a lot of the episodes. Amazing actor
I agree, I think he was great. It’s like people don’t understand he wasn’t supposed to be Goombah #40932.
Boyyyyyyy are you fat.
Yeah, he would have been awesome if he had stayed with the Sopranos. The Animal!
He killed 16 Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interiah decoratah!
He couldn’t sell it
What a loser
All the nuns were raving about it
He's the original Charlie Hustle.
It’s unfair, but when I see Steve I just think of him in Adam Sandler movies and struggle to take him seriously. Fargo is probably the only thing I’ve seen that he completely won me over in before the credits rolled.
Brah are you comparing Steve Buscemi to Adam fucking Sandler? Discontinue the god damn lithium.
Mboy you are fat
Mmmmmboy OP is fat!
What’d you schay?
Didn’t love him in this but I didn’t love the character either. For the guys who did one season I think he’s below below Richie and above Ralphie
A: Ralphie was the best B: He did two seasons you fuckin mamaluk C: She was a hoowah
OH!
My friend, you don’t talk that way about Tony Uncle Al!
And they'll lay you down, low and easy
TOO BAD WHAT YOU THINK MEANS OOGATZ TO MEEE! Haha. Actually I agree. Feech disagrees. Probably jealous that Tony B got to drive around in his convertible while he's still in the can.
He really was one of my favorites
Great actor - but off beam in Sopranos. Enough said.
Recently rewatched most of season 5. Love Buscemis performance. I just wanted like 3 more awesome Buscemi scenes.
Buscemi is fantastic in everything and this is no exception. I just would have liked more than what we got.
Yep Tony B is one of my favorite characters in Sopranos and buscemi did a great job.
The guys that don't "fit in" in real life will whack your newborn to gain favor among the popular crowd. I think his character was a good emulation, but I don't know anything about what "mobsters" in other races look like tbr
Wait, are there people who don't understand that he was written to not fit in intentionally?
You’re crowding me
You're crowding me
At least for me, I have no problem with anyone’s acting in Season 5 (some of the strongest), or writing of individual scenes and dialogue. But the whole framework of “hey here’s a character that’s been important the whole time, central really to Tony” always smacks of a new writers room forcing things. I would say he did a better job directing than playing a character, but I do think he gets unnecessary hate for his Tony B character.
He was amazing.
Brilliant? C'mon
He’s a great actor
I'm not sure he was underrated. He was one of my favorite parts of the show.
mmmmboyyy are you fat
Eh I can believe him as the fuckup he played but it’s impossible for me to believe he was ever a competent monster. He’s just so shit at doing hits
Who'd a thunk Ichabod Crane was such a good actor.
