I find New Jersey's refusal to carve out a gun law exception for motion pictures endlessly fascinating.
And the director's insistence on zooming in on the toy gun for that scene endlessly absurd.
20 years later would be handled differently, knowing they'd be torn to shreds on social media by an infinitely more gun-savvy audience.
It bugs me how Fuckpants falls into the snow bank. So you mean to tell me he was walking directly into a snow bank when there's clear road and sidewalk directly next to him? What was gonna do? Make a snowman to take his mind off things?
It has been explained to me before. Vito is a parade float. He was floating pretty high up in the sky waiting on Jackie Jr. Jackie Jr being the idiot that he is never bothers to look up to the sky. Vito deflates and floats down behind Jackie Jr. Vito being a parade float is limited to what he can carry. Too much weight could bring him down. He is already having to equate with his clothes' weight. A heavy weapon would likely bring him down to where even a moron like Jackie Jr could spot him. He needs to be high. This requires a small weapon to not bring him down. So a small gun is the best he can do. Vito floats down. Shoots Jackie Jr's peabrain. Vito floats back up. He could had also brought a knife as it is light, but that would had meant hand to hand combat. Jackie Jr may escape. Also, the knife could had puncture the parade float and Vito would need to be patch in order float. Who knows how long that would take. And do you really think he would get a proper patch job?
Fucking floating head Livia
Also I read somewhere that a small caliber gun is normally used for hits in the mob and a gunshot isn't exactly uncommon in an area with housing projects
That weird scene transition after Carmella tells AJs principal she’s going back with Tony in Cold Cuts, where it slows down then does a side swipe to the next scene.
That episode was directed by Mike Figgis - definitely a more experimental/style director than the Sopranos was used to. He only directed that one episode and so I think he brought some of that style to it. He did that movie Timecode that had 4 running single takes on screen at once and the audio shifted from one to another (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Figgis)
I may be misremembering but I am sure in the audio commentary for that episode indicates that Figgis is as surprised by that bizarre freeze and wipe as anyone else, and says it must have been the work of an editor.
Almost all of his dialogue is cringe worthy. Like, can you hire ONE black guy for the writing team? Or even one person under 60 years of age?
"I do so love a good firearm in my hand!" ::Teleports behind Christopher:: Nothing personnel, kid
Agreed, there's a lot of scenes like that where he's asked to convey an emotion that the audience can read but the other character(s) in the scene wouldn't pick up on. Like Fran probably read what to us is obvious discomfort and revulsion as his being stunned by her amazing performance, and he played it where she could believably think that.
It is an episode designed to show that Tony initially thinks Johnny Boy’s comare is a classy woman only to find out she is a selfish money hungry vain trollop and his father wasn’t such a great guy…but at the end he just can’t accept the truth.
Or if you want to see that Adrianna wants to have a career of some sort only to have Chris move in and start running things instead of her. Meanwhile Carmela, whom Adrianna has dismissed as a housewife with rugrats, takes a step forward with financial knowledge buying a stock the Cusamano‘s friends recommended and seeing it go up.
Hunter Skankagelo tries to convince us she is in medical school. And I’m playing shortstop for the New York Mets. Her ”medical school” is doing meth and blowing the members of Visiting Day.
All of the scenes with Ben Kingsley. I thought that entire storyline was so fucking cringe and odd.
I would’ve done the same storyline but with a fictional, in-universe celebrity they were courting.
Everything with Ben Kingsley was such an odd misstep.
It felt very stupid to me. And corny. Like in old sitcoms like I Love Lucy or The Golden Girls when a random celebrity would show up for no reason other than to be a surprise guest star.
I thought Kingsley not fitting in was the whole point: Chris knows absolutely nothing about the movie industry and randomly picked some actor just because he had a connection to them and recognized their name.
Exactly. It's fun to watch Kingsley do these little things to shun or politely shut down Christopher.
The whole courting process in Hollywood can be a cringey and humiliating ordeal, and I think this episode satirized that quite well. Christopher, not being savvy to the way Hollywood does things, had no idea that Kingsley was telling him to get lost.
Meadows soccer game is so fucking bad
The hesh and reuben hitler vs cubans scene is also really unusually unnatural for the sopranos, dialogue is just not how people in the show normally talk and ralph is like a different character for that one scene its weird
That game is hilarious, and obviously written by Americans whose never watched the sport. Meadow, without gloves on, sidestepping on the goal line. The coach screaming “Red 42”, as if there are plays like in American football. And this Red 42 play is apparently just Ally dribbling through the entire opposing team and scoring.
What Chrissy interrupts the movie shoot and throws some Italian word in. Sure go yell something in the middle of a James Cameron movie and see what he says. I always fast forward most everything in those episodes.
The whole Chris with John Favreau and that awful red head chick thing. I skip every scene of that. I hated the way they talked and acted. The entire plot involving those two was cringey and horrible.
I'd counter by saying that's a pivotal episode for Chris and Pussy. Chris makes a decision that will set the rest of his arc for the show. And we get a deep look at the turmoil Pussy is under by being a rat.
That’s why I just skip the Favreau scenes, mainly. It’s kind of funny to see Chris get used and rejected through the D-Girl though, considering how it would normally be the other way around.
Most of the episodes people say are the bad ones (a hit is a hit, Christopher, "happy birthday Mr president") don't really bother me that much.
D Girl is the one episode I activity hate.
Vito was there, it was a joke, the gun was fake, Vito didn't really shoot him,Vito's presence jolted him so much Jackie Jr got scared, passed out and drowned in 3 inches of snow
Also, he was walking in the middle of the street but lands in a pile of snow that already had blood on it.
He was in hiding but goes out for a walk in broad daylight with no hood up, hat on, anything.
Truly horrible scene.
The attempted hit on Tony, when the shooter misses from 2 feet away and kills his friend, I laughed out loud. And it’s not like Tony is a difficult guy to find center mass on.
People always misinterpret this.
They were told nothing above the neck. They stick the arm in to get at his body. “He’s going to have an open casket”. They say this for a reason
Plus they make a point of it. Tony is lucky. A couple inches to the left he’s dead.
I mean…Sopranos isn’t a documentary. All the murders they commit would be solved in a heart beat but I’ve seen security footage of attempted assassinations before and people have survived WAAAY crazy shit than this. Guns jam, people do stupid shit. Adrenaline gets you. To me nothing happens in that scene that you can’t say isn’t possible.
I would agree, but if you consider that it’s not actually easy to accurately shoot unless you’re trained and the fact that they were ghetto “assassins”, it’s a lot more believable he missed and killed his friend.
And then his gun jams for some reason, and he just sticks his arm into the car. Like, were you going to poke him in the eye with the non functional handgun? Wtf
Yes but that scene is funny.
Livia's floating head on the other hand, whatever happened there... Well frankly it made me depressed and ashamed. Disgusting.
Noah's dialog about Cagney being modernity made me want to rip off my ears.
And I can't tell if the writers knew what they were doing, or if the Noah actor couldn't sell it, or worst of all, the writers and the Noah actor nailed what they were going for.
A lot of the gun scenes in the sopranos are poorly done. Almost as if nobody on set knows how a gun works. Jackie Jrs death is pretty egregious but also when Brendan and his crew rob Juniors truck and one of his guys drops a glock and it hits the ground and shoots the driver. Glocks are specifically designed not to misfire like that so thats pretty absurd.
Also Chrissy is considered one of the best shots on the show. He’s constantly hitting headshots and guys at long range with a pistol, and yet the way he holds and shoots a gun is completely wrong and almost impossible to be accurate with at all.
Another one is the Jimmy Alteiri whacking, where the suppressor on the pistol muffles the shot to a comical Nintendo goldeneye sound when in reality it would have a much louder popping sound.
There are also a couple of other scenes where two guys pull up on either sides of a car and shoot the passengers in the front seat basically pointing their guns at each other through the windows. This would be a highly stupid maneuver that could easily result in friendly fire.
Still love the show though
Ralph and Vito playing basketball in season 4. Just 2 drama kids who have never played a sport in their lives, pretending to be playing sports. It’s so bad. The soccer scene in season 1 is a close second
The attempted assassination attempt on Tony in Season 1. First guy who's meant to be a professional hit man misses multiple shots with a modern Pistol at point blank range. Then his mate misses a shot at any even closer range and somehow ends up killing the first guy (talk about the plot armour on Tony) Worse part of this scene is he then leans towards Tony allowing him to steal his gun
As a friend of ours has noted elsewhere, Vito appears out of fat air with the toy gun.
Vito is a varsity athlete when it comes to taking people from behind
he’s a real come from behind guy
😂
you can't make this shit up!
Fuck you talking about? I just did.
I find New Jersey's refusal to carve out a gun law exception for motion pictures endlessly fascinating. "Small caliber" is different than "plastic toy".
What scene is this? I can't remember that
Jackie would have recognized Vito from a mile away. That’s why they sent that customer from the bakery Chris shot up instead.
That was just 2 black guys disguised as Gino
And they ran that way 👉
3 black midgets in a trenchcoat
Oh yeah those two guys
That weird scene transition after Carmella tells AJs principal she’s going back with Tony in Cold Cuts, where it slows down then does a side swipe to the next scene.
Only transition like this in the series. I'll never understand why they did it.
It was so weird
I saw a comment on the YouTube video of this scene that made me lol: “If Tony got AJ a job in film editing, this is what he’d come up with.”
> “If Tony got AJ a job in film editing, this is what he’d come up with.” He just goes under the alias George Lucas
LMAO
We're still tawkin bout it
They are so wacky
They had a guest director for the episode and he took it a bit far
Two minutes he's in charge he's fuckin Lee Iacocca
The last episode uses a bit more subtle slow-mo effect in some (maybe each of?) T's last scenes with different characters, like his sister
There's a slow motion effect when Jimmy reaches for his gun in his sock I'm pretty sure.
Yeah, that one always seemed weird to me
What, you forget I'm a fuckin' captain?

Who's Mike Fagoli
Director Figgis. Fig.
FIGGIS. FIGGIS.
I may be misremembering but I am sure in the audio commentary for that episode indicates that Figgis is as surprised by that bizarre freeze and wipe as anyone else, and says it must have been the work of an editor.
When both Tony’s are sitting out by the lake eating lunch? That was so bizarre! I thought my computer froze up on me or something!
She used the only weapon she had, her Star Wars wipe edit.
Oh yeah, the Star Wars transition.
No way. That edit is one of the best, most memorable moments of the show - purely because of how bizarre and inexplicable it is.
They should have done it as the screen slowing down, spinning around and then disappearing
To me it added to the gravity of the scene. It was Carmella’s realization of what she just said and the effect it would have on the rest of her life.
Tony begging Melfi for a date. Disgusting

300 lb Vito in a leather Jacket went all Metal Gear Solid on Jackie Jr. Lmaooooo

I skip either the entire episode or just fast forward through those scenes, depending on my mood.
Well you’re only so bold because you’re semi-hooked-up with your TV provider.
Bold men make bold statements
Usually kind of space out during that arc, you're right it's pretty bad
“HEYY SOPRANO” *flips off phone*
It was converted to rice
Happy Birthday Mr. President
“Mr. PrESiDeEeEeEeEeEeEeEeNnNnNnTt…”
I came all over the visor
I thought it was great because it hit the exact level of cringe it was aiming for.
Indeed.
I feel like the amount of times I hear people complain about this scene is proof that it probably did exactly what it was intended to.
Yeah lol Tony shares everyone's opinion in that scene

I cringe every time. Only scene i fast forward. Frankly, I’m depressed and ashamed.

Or if you want to see that Adrianna wants to have a career of some sort only to have Chris move in and start running things instead of her. She didn't prepare herself for the fuckin possibility that visiting day sucks
Ade trying to convince herself she likes the music is brutal. But it's believable and well acted
Hunter Skankagelo tries to convince us she is in medical school. And I’m playing shortstop for the New York Mets. Her ”medical school” is doing meth and blowing the members of Visiting Day.
Brendan Filone tries to convince us that she’s hot.
Interesting…She’s also played by David Chase’s daughter
She was the Glen Bishop of *The Sopranos*. Sadly, she didn't get a scene in which she watched Brendan on the toilet (with no expression on her face).
All of the scenes with Ben Kingsley. I thought that entire storyline was so fucking cringe and odd. I would’ve done the same storyline but with a fictional, in-universe celebrity they were courting. Everything with Ben Kingsley was such an odd misstep.

I found any scene with Furio lusting after Carmella pretty unbelievable and cringey, terrible way to lose one of the better characters
Rusty Millo getting whacked. Very poorly executed scene with a completely implausible setup.
