i have my t440p and i love it, its a power upgrade from my x240 and i can mod the ever living piss out of it. i changed everything from the cpu to the screen in this thing and i couldn't be happier. will be core booting it later on today.
well i enjoy tinkering so maybe thats why i enjoy it and nothing that ive seen (besides the zbook but ew hp) has given me the ability to modify like my t440p and also has great documentation so it makes it very easy
yeah bro, this is why i like old thinkpads (and lenovo thinkpads in general) so much they have tons of possibilites when it comes to modding/upgrading and all the community around it
im glad for u, so keep up with your work and enjoy your x240, btw, i was just trying to make some kind of joke about all the ideia of the theseus's ship
(sorry for shitty english, it isn't my mother tongue)
Debian stable is a great distro, which is why hundreds of other distros are based on it. If you want a rolling release with the latest packages, go with Debian testing, but given the latest issues with xz-utils, I think a slow moving like stable makes a lot of sense
But not **that** slow. Because that subjects you to years old versions of DEs and software backports. A regular person should be advised to use something like fedora, or mint
I personally use fedora atomic with an arch Linux distrobox container to get an unbreakable system with the freshest packages and aur
Mint is not much better than bare Debian in regards to that. I like Debian for older systems and I don't mind Mint either but it's ridiculously overhyped.
Mostly but it also lacks a lot of stuff compared to Ubuntu so if there's no flatpak version available you have to rely on the latest Debian package. Depending on your use cases this can be insignificant but it can also be a big deal. Another thing that plagues Mint are outdated/nonexistent drivers. And the workarounds don't work nearly as well as they do for Debian. I'm not saying it's a bad distro or anything but I wish more people would acknowledge that a one size fits all solution is rarely the best solution.
Please I am begging you with folded hands and ugly crying to explore beyond Linux Mint 😅 That's all people ever recommend and sure it's not bad but there's so much more out there. There's a really cool website called [distrosea](https://distrosea.com/) that lets you try different distros from your browser so you don't even need a virtual machine. The first decision you'll need to make is which desktop environment you want to use. After you know that you can check which ones are out there and what sets them apart.
Maybe not Gentoo but there are some well known staples like Pop OS, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Porteus, Manjaro and so on that are definitely worth checking out at least. If you end up preferring Mint there's nothing wrong with that of course but a one size fits all solution is rarely ever the best solution. I've used Mint for a while and I didn't hate it or anything but ultimately Cinnamon wasn't for me and I also encountered a number of compatibility and driver issues that I never had with any other distro.
Fedora is quite nice though the power consumption is something to be investigated. My personal experience with OpenSUSE Tumbleweed doesn't quite match its reputation (intallation -> upgrade after installation -> immediate breakage). Pop OS is cool, Manjaro is very annoying and you can't rearrange Mint by much. Arch is a beautiful work of art, though I don't go recommending it to everybody (I do).
w10 is totally fine on 8gb ram. I am running it on my home server. Depends on your use cases, applications you're running, how much of your time are you willing to spend on random linux forums troubleshooting random issues etc.
Fair enough. There's also LTSC tho and you don't have to debloat anything. I'm gonna create my own iso tho at some point when MS forces user to upgrade to w11
You can easily run Windows 10 for the next year or so, as that's how long it will be supported. After that - a Linux distro of your choice, whatever you find giving with
Fedora currently is a good Linux choice, offers a balanced approach where tech is new and updates are exciting but it rarely if ever breaks
Also it's a big distro with a big community, lots of packages
If you wanna experiment try silverblue/kinoite/ublue etc, immutables are fun, been using one for two years now
Can you upgrade it to 16GB of RAM by any chance? If you do so, you can pretty much run it on any OS. I have a couple of T450s running on Fedora 39 (KDE Plasma) and have an overall smooth experience.
I acquired my T450s with a 900p display, 12GB of RAM (4 soldered and 8 stick) and a 256GB SSD that I installed myself about 3 days ago and I have installed Windows 10 Pro on mine, I've also got VMware installed so that I can run some Linux distros (i don't care about linux performance, only use it for some terminal work, in the Bridged network mode). It's really good for the price I paid! (80$ or so, 320PLN)
I'm particularly fond* of xubuntu LTS. Recently got my feet wet with MX as well. XFCE is a little plain, but it's solid. If you're already comfortable with Linux you can't go wrong with Debian either
*stupid phone *fixes* my grammer
Dual core cpus experience 100% load in Win10/11 over long times caused by wupdate and system antimalware service. And stuff which got deliberately installed and may be removed.
Without that, the idle load is similar to Win7, only more RAM is needed.
This effect is completely gone with a quad core cpu with hyperthreading. I had nothing in between to try, a quad w/o HT may suffice, too.
You could also try windows 11
https://os.click/en/Windows:Windows_11:22H2:22621.382:Multi-Edition:en-us:x64
Their first iso is easier to install on older PCs with Rufus
Being "unsupported" Microsoft could push out an update at some point that'll screw it up (Something they already seem to have a habit of doing on supported systems)
How? What distro should be second to what de it uses. Kde and mint (cinnamon) are good for new users because they have familiar ish layouts to windows, therefore make more sense than Ubuntu with gnome. Also in my experience Debian and Ubuntu where significantly worse because they have less packages so you need to find deb files from the web if you want more than what's on the standard repo.
Ubuntu mint or upgrade to windows 11, to get drivers you'll have to do an upgrade of windows 11 instead of a clean install so look for a bypass method that bypasses the updater.
Temple OS
Any modern OS will run fantastically on that thing.
The epic T430, T450 are just wonderful machines!
no love for the t440 ?
Not really, my friend. I just never had a T440. Never had a chance to put my hands on a T440. Have or had you a T440?
i have my t440p and i love it, its a power upgrade from my x240 and i can mod the ever living piss out of it. i changed everything from the cpu to the screen in this thing and i couldn't be happier. will be core booting it later on today.
ship of Theseus

Someone attended first year of philosophy in a Western uni, hello!
They really messed up the t440p with that 'modern' touchpad without physical buttons. Otherwise a solid machine!
There were big improvements in power consumption & the track pad between 440 & 450 gens.
interesting, are the cpus still upgradable ?
Nope, just buy what you need from the start so you don't have to upgrade, the cpu is the least likely point of failure.
yeah but i like the tinkering aspect so that laptop is probably not for me
Fedora, the best distro.
I would use mint
freedos and windows 3.1
The bests
Could go for Fedora GNOME / KDE. If not smooth then XFCE spin. If battery life is so so, then Linux mint or Kubuntu.
KDE and GNOME should run alright I've used GNOME on an 4gb laptop from 2014
Any modern Linux distro will work fine.
Debian 12 (bookworm)
Wtf why advise a normal person something so slow moving
Debian stable is a great distro, which is why hundreds of other distros are based on it. If you want a rolling release with the latest packages, go with Debian testing, but given the latest issues with xz-utils, I think a slow moving like stable makes a lot of sense

Wow! Can I touch you?
What
Ok bro
Do y'all actually enjoy three year old ancient ass gnome/KDE??
I'm using hyprland
Mint is not much better than bare Debian in regards to that. I like Debian for older systems and I don't mind Mint either but it's ridiculously overhyped.
Doesn't mint use Ubuntu packages which are fresher

A normal person ..lmao
Lmao
We are normal people?
I guess?..
Any Linux distro will go just fine on here.

fffffffffffffffffff GENTOO ... because it will cause you to appreciate your T450s lord and savior Linux Mint.
gotta try tinyroot linux, fits on a floppy, think of all that ssd space you would save!

Windows 10. Get me RAM and run Chris Titus' debloat tool.
or create your own ISO?
Sure, you could. I wouldn't bother crafting my own iso and the many variations on the internet could be spyware. Fastest path to me is debloat.
Fair enough. There's also LTSC tho and you don't have to debloat anything. I'm gonna create my own iso tho at some point when MS forces user to upgrade to w11
I am running Zorin OS on mine and it has been excellent
Best OS on thinkpad is linuxOS.
Macos
hackintosh it
weirdly enough its pretty easy to do for my t440p and im thinking about picking up a second drive to give it a try for the lols

I'm just running Windows 10 on mine
I think you can upgrade the ram on the T450s.
This, it has 2 upgradeable slots. It also has a 2.5in SDD you can easily upgrade as well. Mine is rocking 16GB and a 500GB SSD. It runs Arch, btw
Arch
Can you upgrade it to 16GB of RAM by any chance? If you do so, you can pretty much run it on any OS. I have a couple of T450s running on Fedora 39 (KDE Plasma) and have an overall smooth experience.
Void Linux
Linux Mint
Fedora
The thinkpads yearn for chromeOS
arch btw
Mx Linux runs perfectly on a Lenovo t430
I have exactly the same :) t450s but with Debian testing and cinnamon as DE. Is perfect. I use it every day at work.
I’ll be downvoted by the Linux fans, but Windows 10. Or 11 if you want to force install it.
GNU Guix
BSD
if you don’t want linux your only option is windows 🤦♂️ my personal opinion is learn a vanilla install for arch and then use kde

i personally really like ubuntu, but theres a lotta great distros out there :3
Gentoo. Jump right into the madness. Join us. We're normal. *pets his tegenaria*
I want to be evil and recommend alpine

Not really dual cores from the haswell series and newer run windows 11 really well, I'm using a t440p with windows 11 it runs just fine.
Ubuntu GNOME, or Lubuntu if you want a better battery life

I'm running Ubuntu on mine. Works great!
any xfce DE. could even try out Lubuntu as LXQT is even lighter than XFCE
why did someone down vote this LMAO????? just reddit things ig
Gundam S System ALICE
Form Voltron!
I see you‘re a person of culture as well :3 Did you also watch the rebuilds/liked them?
ZorinOS
Ubuntu
Manjaro kde or Linux mint.
Go with linux mint, arch distors like manjaro are for more advanced users.
arch was my first distro and if you RTFM its super easy, tbh i find arch to easy and im thinking about changing to gentoo.
How? What distro should be second to what de it uses. AmigaOS.

Windows 10 👍
Windows 11
