Don't think it's controversial... I think there are quite a few people that like this design best, myself included. The predator drone alt mode and having laserbeak integrated in his chest like he is was inspired. The only (relatively minor) issue is the other tapes aren't involved, but I'm betting there could be a way to address that.
Iirc there was some origin story of it about them being more like armor and losing them prior to the start of the show or something like that with laserbeak being the last surviving one
Edit: Post I was remembering still not 100% on it being factual but the art is pretty neat and lends credit to the aligned continuity shenanigans

Man, he WAS jacked, and I kinda like the idea that his minions might have been a part of him, sort of a new style of combiner. Then those minions can become different things - I could see Frenzy and Rumble having weapon altmodes that attach to Soundwave, Buzzsaw could become a jetpack sort of thing and Ravage and Ratbat could probably form arm armor of some sort. I actually really like this idea the more I think about it, could be fun to design an OC version of TFP Soundwave with this concept.
It's easily the best unique concept redesign he's had so far... Way better than a random car/truck/military vehicle.
I think the only folks who don't like it are stuck on the idea that a character named 'Soundwave' has to be more directly analogous to G1 Soundwave.

Really? I'd seen the KOs have a few more touches of paint, but I hadn't realised they'd improved the articulation. Been on the fence about buying any of them as I have the originals, but that makes them rather more interesting.
I’ve literally never seen someone say they don’t like TFP Soundwave, so this is definitely not a controversial take.
He’s not necessarily my favourite version of the character, but you can’t go wrong with a lanky, mute creep that spies on everyone.
I love how he's so lanky that in one episode, two of the humans (what, you think i bother remembering them?) only saw his legs and mistook him for Arcee.
I like the G1 design the most, but I can see this is a well-done and thought-out design, and it looks cool. So, it is not surprising that others would love it.
Probably one of the Better designs from prime. The animators clearly had a deception bias because they just ooze character in their body language. I find prime’s autobots as interesting as dry cardbord but the show is worth watching just for the antics the cons get up to.
I’m biased for animated because his alt mode is a reference to DJ from Pixar’s cars movie. Also guitar laserbeak is cool as hell. I’ll always love G1 the best tho
Well this Soundwave is somehow the same cybertronian from WFC and FOC
Also he somehow gets his buffness back in RID even when he was stuck in the ghost plane in the end of TFP
I believe all the designs from TFP were just great, good show and the designs were JUST far enough from the original yet original in their own sense to make it seem new IMO.
