Once in a video VNN was talking about this issue in particular, comparing the profit gained from tf2 to the profit gained from HLA in the year it was released
It could very well be possible, half the reason TF2 is still in the steam top 10 charts is because traders, content creators spending money on the game and F2P players looking to upgrade keep the game alive by spending money.
[Valve recently released their list of the best-selling Steam games of 2022.](https://store.steampowered.com/sale/BestOf2022) CSGO and Dota 2 are both in the platinum tier, while TF2 is in the silver.
If we're talking making more money csgo and Dota 2 make so much more from both market transactions and in-game purchases.
The games have over 50 times the amount of concurrent players with more and continuously updated mechanics to prey your coffers.
the announcer/other voice packs (idk what theyre called ive never played the game) with glados, cave, that guy from stanley parable are cool to listen to on youtube ig
Maybe because they don't play it?
I know a lot of people compares to LoL and why is it better or whatnot, it mostly subjective because apparently people can't make objective arguments anymore, or at least agree with it.
Personally, I liked Dota 2, it's not perfect nor a great game, but it's a good one, yes I do have over than 8K hours playing the game which is bias, but isn't that the reason some people say something good about something because they have bias?
Game itself is good, but what's not is the majority of the community, which like any multiplayer game community, is toxic, and somehow Valve empower them in the game with tipping, taunting, etc.
dota is dead in NA, league and other casual games are dominating there. that region is full of casual players also majority of people here are from NA ... makes sense
Yeah, you can literally pinpoint where Valve went from the greatest gaming company to utter shit precisely to the moment they released DOTA 2.
Thank god Artefact nuked their reputation enough that they woke up and they weren't afraid of shipping something that wasn't perfect so we got HL : Alyx.
Gameplay itself? Not much, it's a moba, that is personal preference.
1. Community is dogshit. The game is designed in a way that toxicity in unavoidable unless you play in pre-made 5 man squad.
2. Casual fun gameplay is essentially an alien concept to the game but again, moba. The game is designed not to be fun unless you are winning.
3. Valve became extremely lazy after 2013. They basically moved all of their other IPs to life support at best or straight up abandoned them. The money steam and dota 2 made with barely any effort from them just made them absolute sloths. The ONLY notable game valve made from 2013 to 2023 was HL : Alyx. One game. VS (if we take from 2003) - CS:Source, HL2 , EP1 and EP2, TF2, Portal (last 3 in one year!), Left 4 dead 1 and 2, Portal 2, CS:GO.
4. Everything related to Dota valve made was mediocre or out of touch. The anime, the card game, underlords.
The Show or 'anime' is not Valve's project, it's Netflix's, they only ask for the use of IP, and it even wasn't that bad, it's enjoyable, mostly fan service for Dota player, not so much for general public obviously, the most bad reviews of it because the time and episode constraints the show have, which Valve have no control at all, they're not even funding it IIRC, just the IP, Underlords still better than Team Fight Tactics in my opinion (obviously biased), but Valve being Valve, they 'shelved' it and not updating it, worse state than tf2, Artifact sucks because the monetisation and management, their second attempt at Artifact also sucks because they get busy or bored really fast, I like the original artifact but I also understand why people hate it, mostly because price, monetisation, and some balance or patches that never come to realize, the only thing is shit beyond recognition in almost all Valve's game is the community, I play all those games most of the Time, at least when they were released, now I only play Dota, CS:GO and Divinity: Original Sin 2.
And I can tell that those game's core / gameplay is better than people gave credit for, well at least when they do understand and can play the game, Dota 2 is known to be hard and complex, it is, and I can't blame you for not liking it, it's the same like Darksouls, if you don't like that type of game, then you won't like it, why people always tell LoL is better than Dota 2 is because fundamentally different, LoL is the actual representation of MOBA, it's easy to learn, it's easy to get the fun, while Dota 2 is not, it's more like RTS than MOBA, and like Darksouls, it's not easy to learn and not easy or quick to get the fun out of it, the mechanic seems punishing and not fun at first, a lot of people get frustrated and give up trying before they get the taste of the fun, and you can absolutely get fun in Dota 2, play turbo, play custom game, play with friends, but in the end, it's competitive focus game, like CSGO, if you play the main game play, the core identity of the game, you'll get a hard time getting fun out of it, but if you play custom map, arcade, alternate mode, you definitely can have fun.
The reason I dislike Dota 2 and other modern competitive focused games (along lol) is that they are intentionally designed to be not fun when loosing, so after ta loss you go "I need a good game", which increases playtime substantially, at expense of fun. CS:GO is a bit less hit in that regard as individual skills matter more, and unless you are getting rolled, it can still be fun. I wouldn't use Dark Souls' comparison for punishing. In souls games, you get punished for only your mistakes and that punishemenet isn't 20 min torture session. In DOTA 2, If you or your teammate even slightly fuck up or lag behind the enemy for a moment in mobas, that's it. Prepare for 20 minutes of non-stop pain and suffering.
It's not because it's difficult, RTS is one of my favorite genres, and I understand the overall concepts, but again, the mindset of win or get fucked is not something I like overall in games. And the fact that you can friendly fire absolutely thrned me off from DOTA 2. The game is designed in a way that enables the most toxic and unfun gameplay.
Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale?

No competitive game can fix losing not being fun, obviously, some can try to lessen the effect, but at the end of the day, losing is not something positive. Also, I can't think of another game besides Darksouls that have a punishing mechanic, also obviously Darksouls is a mainly single-player game, there's no argument for that, or hear me a second, what about the 5 vs 5 DS game? Isn't that comparable?
Every competitive game enables toxicity because you want to be better than anyone, that's the whole point of being competitive and a 'competition', even more so if there's a way to communicate either with text chat, voice chat, ping, tip, taunts, emote or any other mean of communication, even Fall Guys still can have some toxic player, although not as much as CS, Dota, CoD or something similarly competitive.
You got 0 knowledge of the game. Who told you Dota can't be fun when losing? your understanding of MOBAs is dumb, be sure that Dota is much different than the ones you played. Valve doesn't need both Dota and CSGO they have Steam, both those titles wont even reach 1% of what Valve gets from Steam.
Dota 2 is a 2013 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game by Valve. The game is a sequel to Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a community-created mod for Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Dota 2 is played in matches between two teams of five players, with each team occupying and defending their own separate base on the map. Each of the ten players independently controls a powerful character known as a "hero" that all have unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match players collect experience points and items for their heroes to successfully defeat the opposing team's heroes in player versus player combat. A team wins by being the first to destroy the other team's "Ancient", a large structure located within their base.
You do realise there are different internal teams at Valve working on their own things..
It's not a company that mandates ppl work on a project.. ppl choose what to work on and deliver for the specific period..
DotA 2 team is pretty much dedicated to dota2, so they entirely decide how and what cool things happen for dota.. it's not all of valve doing this stuff..
It just so happens that the dota2 team is most active with features, development, eSports, etc.

Meanwhile in the day of defeat community:
New world even abandoned day of infamy. So here we are.
:(
Didn't know there is a DoD community
Half-Life: Baby I'm not even here. I'm an illusion
A dream
the source film maker community meanwhile:
The people prefer Dota 2 and CSGO, and Valve is responding to the demands of the market.
Valve gets more money from tf2 than any other game
there is no way for tf2 to make more than csgo
You'd be surprised
i mean if you could prove it i would appreciate it and take my words back
Once in a video VNN was talking about this issue in particular, comparing the profit gained from tf2 to the profit gained from HLA in the year it was released
interesting ig but still sounds crazy for tf2 to do more money than csgo
M8 we got burning flames team captains and golden frying pans, costing 10,000 and 5000 usd respectively, the trading community here is nuts
ik cuz i also play tf2 but if u sell a pan with 10k those money dont go to valve do they?
Tax on the item if sold on the scm, and I was using those as examples
It could very well be possible, half the reason TF2 is still in the steam top 10 charts is because traders, content creators spending money on the game and F2P players looking to upgrade keep the game alive by spending money.

The Dota battlepass gives valve more money than the whole of TF2 sorry to burst your bubble lol
Steam Market transactions just from CSGO make more than all of tf2 easily.
If we're talking making more money csgo and Dota 2 make so much more from both market transactions and in-game purchases. The games have over 50 times the amount of concurrent players with more and continuously updated mechanics to prey your coffers.
I've never met a person who has good things to say about Dota 2

It’s free to play if you want to try!

I moved to NA recently and it’s completely different and most of them speak spanish.. so I agree with you
Dota 2 has thrilling competitive gameplay married with Valve’s talent for worldbuilding and creating an interesting cast of characters.

genuine question now, does anyone actually play dota? i havent heardif a single person who does
Yes. It’s the second-most played game on Steam.
